  • Faking Medical Records? Former K-pop idol is charged with faking medical records to avoid Military service

A former K-pop idol has been charged with faking medical records to avoid military service! We examine why this has been happening and what other Korean celebrities have tried to do the same! In South Korea, able males must join the Korean Army (National Service) between the ages of 18 and 35, as technically South Korea is still at war with North Korea. If you are part of the National team for the Olympics , for example, then you can be exempt from mandatory military service . When BTS were conscripted , there was a big debate as to whether or not they should be exempt due to their outstanding work in the K-pop and K-culture industry, however after a lot of backlash the BTS members went ahead with their mandatory military service. This can not be said however for other K-pop or K-drama stars, who have tried to get out of their duty to their country, and some stars have tried to fake their medical records to get out of completing service due to ill health (such as being underweight or having bad eyesight). Due to the sensitivity of this topic, the actual names have been blanked out. However, on September 9, 2024, the Changwon District Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had indicted A without detention on charges of violating the Military Service Act, forgery of documents, and violating the Information and Communication Network Act. The prosecution also indicted A’s mother, “B,” and a nurse, “C,” who helped falsify the medical records. According to the prosecution, in May 2021, A and B forged medical records from a doctor to lower A’s military classification from Grade 1 (fit for active duty) to Grade 4 (reserved service). This means that they can work within their community such as helping the elderly, less privileged, etc. If you have not completed your mandatory service, this is often looked down on in Korean society. However, after reviewing computer log records, phone call recordings between the co-conspirators, and other evidence, the prosecution determined there was enough evidence to proceed with the case. Earlier, in March, the prosecution requested a reinvestigation, and by May, A was charged with violating the Military Service Act, while B faced additional forgery charges. Further investigation, including two rounds of medical evaluations of the MRI submitted during A’s military examination, revealed that A did not suffer from the illness that was cited as the reason for his military exemption. C, the nurse who accessed the hospital’s computer system to falsify the records at B’s request, was also identified and charged.  If convicted, A, who completed his service as a Grade 4 reservist, may have to re-enlist as an active-duty soldier. Let's take a look at some Korean celebrities who have already tried to dodge their mandatory military service. Although in the UK conscription (mandatory military service) is not required, I believe that it is a good thing as it helps you gain discipline, become more grounded, and respect society and other people, not to mention that it is good for health and learning new skills. Being in the public eye, there is no question that the documents would have been leaked by someone to either gain some fame for themselves or to remind the stars involved that they too simply, are no different from everyone else. • The Korean Hanbok: Timeless, and Ever-evolving. Can K-pop and K-dramas keep it alive?

When you think of Korea, what are some things that come to mind? K-pop, K-dramas, K-food? For us, the Hanbok is one of them. Though it has gone through moderations over time, its meaning has remained the same. Let's take a look at why this is, and what it means today! Hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) can be found in most tourist destinations in Seoul or throughout Korea. Yes, I have worn it before on a couple of occasions however it was only in a formal setting (tea ceremony) and for filming. I have been interested in Hanbok's history since I visited the History Museum in Seoul a year ago, and there was a display of Hanbok through time. For me, the more traditional Hanbok style was more impressive visually, and the modernized style which was introduced in the late 19th and 20th century, though it still had traditional aspects, I felt like it was trying to become more Western. Towards the end of the Three Kingdoms era, aristocratic women began to wear waist-length jackets and long, ankle-length skirts, while the noblemen wore loose pants, fitted at the ankles and long, belted tunics, however at the same time, silk robes became a thing, but only for the royals and their officials, which is where the Gwanbok (관복) originated from. The clothes worn by regular people were much more simple and less colorful though, as it was very expensive to produce such clothing. For me, I think the overall style of Hanbok reflects a calming and elegant feel, and since coming to Korea in 2020, I have primarily seen it being worn on special events or holidays, such as Seollal or Chuseok . However, I think the entertainment industry is keeping the style alive by adding the dress code into its dramas and music videos . Let's take a look at BLACKPINK's Jennie below, the brand that she is wearing in the photo is Daha, which is an eco-friendly brand that specializes in Korean traditional clothes. I think that she looks fabulous, and the intricate design keeps close to the more traditional Hanbok that has been worn for generations. So can K-idols keep Hanbok alive? Will Hanbok have a place for future generations? Have you ever tried wearing a Hanbok before? • Jennie in Talks for "K-Pop Demon Hunters 2"? Here’s What We Know!

BLACKPINK's Jennie is rumored for the lead role in Netflix's smash hit animated film Kpop Demon Hunters ! Is this true or just speculation? We have all the details! Image: Kpop Demon Hunters and BLACKPINKS Jennie - Photo: Netflixtalks Jennie from BLACKPINK not only has a very successful career and portfolio, but she is also in high demand for roles outside of singing, thanks to the ever-growing K-culture industry at home and abroad. Kpop Demon Hunters has also helped to elevate K-culture and entertainment and the sequel Kpop Demon Hunters 2 will also have a star-studded cast. Now, there have been fan rumors, that Jennie might either voice the lead character Rumi, or perhaps star as a major inspiration behind her. If these fan rumors are to be true, then this would be another impressive milestone for Jennie! Why would Jennie be a good match? Fans have noticed strong visual and stylistic similarities between Jennie and Rumi, such as their fashion, attitude, and stage presence. Some interviews with the creators added fuel to the rumors when Jennie was mentioned as one of several inspirations for the character. However, director Maggie Kang later clarified that Rumi is not based solely on Jennie, but on a wide range of female artists, both within and outside of K-pop. The Dojeon team however, believe that these comments might have been a cover up, due to strong copyright laws if the character was perhaps based on Jennie. Despite this, some fans however believe Jennie’s image was used to promote the film without her actual involvement, sparking backlash and debate online. As of now, there is no official confirmation that Jennie has been cast in KPop Demon Hunters 2  or that the sequel is even fully in production. The creators maintain that Rumi is a mix of many influences, and Jennie is just one of many artists referenced during the design process. Too Booked for Demon Hunting? Fans, of course, are dubious about whether or not Jennie will become involved in the global hit show, as she might have turned it down, or whether she was never approached in the first place. As of now, Jennie has a packed schedule with music, fashion, and acting, so the US animated film might not bring much more to her career. Other fans have also mentioned that YG Entertainment would be cautious about letting her take on an international voice role without full creative control, which is, of course, common with K-pop labels. On the other hand, some fans have speculated that Jennie may be unaware of the new project, which could lead to this just being a rumor. We at Dojeon believe that Jennie would be a great fit for the role and that it will enhance her career with minimal work. Jennie Cameo Theories Are Running Wild Fans are buzzing with unconfirmed theories about Jennie’s potential role in KPop Demon Hunters 2 . Some imagine her as a “demon idol” antagonist or the idol Rumi looks up to. Others hope she’ll perform an original OST or appear in a post-credits teaser setting up the next generation. While none of this is confirmed, the speculation continues to fuel hype. Comment below and let the Dojeon team know why you think Jennie would be a good fit for this role! #Jennie #BLACKPINK #KpopDemonHunters #JennieInKDrama #KpopNews #BLINKsUnite
