  • Real life or live fiction? K-film "12.12: The Day "(서울의 봄) captures a glum glimpse into South Korea's political turmoil

With the recent political turmoil in South Korea, the K-film 12.12 The Day captures a glimpse of what martial law would like like for millions of Koreans. We break down this new film and how it is a reflection of the South Korean political landscape. Image: Youtube clip So what has been happening in South Korea? Recently the South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol , announced in an unexpected press announcement that he would introduce martial law and take over the government in a chance to cease power. This was short-lived as it only lasted a humiliating six hours, however during that time and since the event it has caused a lot of uncertainties within the entertainment industry , and has concerned many Koreans, as well as other nations. Let's take a look at the trailer of 12.12 The Day! So what is the film about? Kim Sung Soo's drama about the 1970 Seoul military coup is one of Koreas biggest box office hits ever! The film opens in the aftermath of the assassination of President Park Chung Hee, who was a dictator who maintained rule from his own coup in 1961 until his death at the hands of one of his own inner circle. Tasked with investigating the assassination plot is General Chun Doo Gwang ( Hwang Jung Min KIll Boksoon 2023). Chun uses the assignment as a means of asserting power by creating a make-believe conspiracy to cast suspicion on anyone who stands in his way. He is also the head of a secret society comprised of military officers who have been overlooked for higher rank due to their lack of elite connections. Image: Plus M Entertainment Deeply worried about Chun’s increasing control, Army Chief of Staff Jeong Sang Ho ( Lee Sung Min Reborn Rich 2022), appoints Lee Tae Shin ( Jung Woo Sung ) as the new Commander of the Capital Garrison Command. This is a post which entails protecting Seoul against marauding military units, including those led by a rogue general. Jeong’s choice is a sound one, as Lee is a straight-arrow soldier with little interest in political affairs – but he has failed to anticipate the extent of Chun’s strategic planning. It effectively dramatizes how General Chun Doo Hwan set himself on the path of becoming the President of South Korea, and this film effectively shows two dictatorial regimes and focuses on the considerable risks taken by state servants and civilians alike to challenges the authoritarian rule. So how is this similar to the 2024 Marshall law declaration? 2024 saw the first martial law declaration since 1979, and as shown in the movie with scenes of military helicopters, armored vehicles entering Seoul, and soldiers breaking into the National Assembly building, it is identical to what we witnessed on December 3, 2024. Image: BBC Amid the current political turmoil, interest in 12.12: The Day , released over a year ago (November 2023), has been reignited, further solidifying its relevance. • NewJeans’ Secret Instagram Sparks Controversy: A Risky Move or Hidden Advantage for ADOR?

NewJeans opens up a new Instagram account. NewJeans , one of K-pop's leading girl groups, has recently made headlines with their announcement to terminate their contract with ADOR , a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation. The group cited alleged mistreatment and the controversial dismissal of their former CEO, Min Hee Jin , as key reasons for their decision. The decision by NewJeans, also known as " Jeanz ," to open a new Instagram account under the username @jeanzforfree has ignited debates within the K-pop community! Amidst their ongoing legal dispute with ADOR over their exclusive contract, this move has raised questions about its legitimacy and potential legal implications. ADOR's Official Stance on the New Account In an official statement on December 18, ADOR addressed the creation of the new Instagram account. The agency emphasized that all social media accounts not established by ADOR violate the terms of their exclusive contract. ADOR stated "Separate entertainment activities conducted through such accounts could create legal issues, and we have conveyed our concerns to the artists and their legal representatives." The agency further highlighted complaints from advertisers and third parties, underlining the potential financial and reputational damage such activities might cause. ADOR urged NewJeans to cease operating the unauthorized account and to use their official channels for fan communication. What are the legal experts Saying about this situation? Legal professionals remain divided on the matter. Some experts argue that NewJeans has followed the necessary legal steps to terminate their contract. If true, this would place the burden on ADOR to prove its validity in court. Others suggest that the group's claims might not hold up in court, as the unilateral termination of an exclusive contract often faces stringent legal scrutiny in the K-pop industry. NewJeans (Credits: ADOR) The new Instagram account could pose additional legal challenges. Typically, management agencies hold rights over group names and related intellectual property. By operating an independent account under the "Jeanz” branding, NewJeans risks infringing on these rights, especially if the contract dispute is resolved in ADOR's favor. Potential Risks for NewJeans If NewJeans continues to run the @jeanzforfree account without a legal resolution, they could face serious consequences. ADOR may seek damages for breach of contract or intellectual property infringement. Additionally, the group’s actions could deter future collaborations with advertisers and brands wary of contractual uncertainties. A Crossroads for NewJeans The ongoing dispute underscores broader issues within the K-pop industry, including artist autonomy, intellectual property rights, and agency control. NewJeans all 5 members (Credits: ADOR) While the legal battle continues, NewJeans’ decision to engage directly with fans reflects their desire for independence. Fans hope for an amicable resolution that allows the group to thrive creatively without further legal hindrances. Do you think NewJeans’ new Instagram account will help their liberty from HYBE, or will it lead to more complications? #newjeans #ador #hybe #controversy #jeanzforfree #bunnies

  • Behind-the-scenes of Hyun Bin's new MUST-WATCH war-thriller movie "Harbin"!

Dojeon team member, Lewis, shares his personal experience as an extra in Hyun Bin's new war-thriller Harbin ! Plus, we unveil why this highly-anticipated movie has fans itching in their seats! Image: Koreanproductpost What is Harbin about? This brand new and exciting spy film covers espionage and thriller all in one. Set in 1909, this film will leave viewers feeling tense throughout, in pursuit between those heading to Harbin in Northern China for a mission. Joining them on this mission is a well-known Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung Geun ( Hyun Bin ) who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, the first prime minister and resident general of Korea at Harbin station. At this time, Korea was under the horrendous brutal Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. The plot: The plot for the most part is simple, however it does have many components. Allies, shelter, or weaponry, often make it from one place to the next and can cause a few setbacks, which are usually due to Mori, whose shame at having been spared has made him deeply obsessed with capturing Ahn. A man who is almost always the topic of conversation, despite this Harbin never feels like a mechanical movie as it comes down to its knockout stylization. Deep shadows and low gaslights create a mysterious atmosphere which, alongside the characters’ black trench coats and low-brimmed hats, turn this historical piece into a thrilling neo-noir. The frame is always engrossing, making it hard to look away as the characters wrestle with moral quandaries about why they might be pursuing their goals and the people and ethics they’re willing to discard along the way. Let's check out the long-awaited trailer for this wartime thriller! Trailer unpacked! From this trailer, it's clear that there are outstanding visuals, which show lonely shots of Ahn traversing an ice hell, which in context is eventually added to the scene of wandering how Ahn and his fellow freedom fighters might have felt at the hellish time. This trailer allows the viewers to feel as if they are in the movie themselves, which during these messy wartime sequences, it allows viewers to also pick up on the mistrust that might have depicted some of the details at the time during the central scheme. The violence in Harbin is up close and personal in the trailer, making Ahn's decision to spare a vicious Japanese Major all the more controversial. Fans have been quick to take to social media, following the release of the trailer! The making of Harbin: (Behind the scenes details!) As some of you have read my previous articles, I have been working in the Korean entertainment industry for the past four years, and I was lucky enough to work as an extra on this movie for some of the train scenes and background solider scenes. On set of "Harbin" (Photo courtesy: Lewis Hooper) During the filming of this movie the scale of production was literally insane. From foreign extras, Korean extras and then of course the main cast themselves. In addition, there were literally hundreds of crew and production team members on set. Though this may sound chaotic for some, the atmosphere was electric, and it led to a great filming experience. Getting into character (Photo courtesy: Lewis Hooper) The filming days were long, often with early morning call times and late finishes, and I found it interesting that the scenes I filmed were based in Andong , for this 1905 historical drama, which was filmed during March 2023. This just goes to show how much work is put into filming, editing, and creating a movie of this scale. On set of "Harbin" (Photo courtesy: Lewis Hooper) The roles that I played involved acting as a solider, so ,I needed to ensure that I was cleanly shaven, and dressed well in the provided costumes. The train setting was the most fun for me, as I love traveling by train and to be part of an iconic scene was meaningful to me, and having watched some of the finished version in the trailer from those train scenes is fun to watch, as I am impressed how good it looks and how well it has come together. Let us know if you will be heading to theatres to watch this new action-thriller in the comments below. #harbin #koreamovie #kmovie #kdrama #kentertainment #hyunbin
