- The ADOR Effect: HYBE’s Q3 2025 Earnings Reveal NewJeans’ Shocking Financial Contribution Amid Scandal!
Inside the record-breaking revenue and unexpected operating loss—and the pivotal role of NewJeans' agency amid internal and global growth strategies. We have all the details! Image: Kpop group NewJeans - Photo: https://www.thestar.com.my Financials Amid Controversy This year has seen HYBE hit the headlines, not necessarily for the most positive reasons, following the ADOR NewJeans scandal. Even with all of these negative headlines, HYBE's Q3 2025 earnings reported a strong revenue of KRW 727.2 billion (USD 524.7 million), yet the company surprisingly posted an operating loss of KRW 42.2 billion (USD 30.4 million). So what caused the loss? These losses primarily came from the proactive investments that the company ventured into, including new global IPs and one-off costs, which were related to the restructuring of its North American business. The ADOR subsidiary, home to NewJeans , still managed to report a net profit despite the group's highly publicized legal disputes. NewJeans' Financial Contribution Despite their halted activities during the highly publicized ADOR dispute, NewJeans' legacy IP still proved to be a strong revenue source for HYBE, which is most likely one of the reasons why HYBE was so against NewJeans giving up their contracts early. Revenue: Record Growth vs. Slight Decline Q3 2025 saw HYBE achieve its highest-ever quarterly revenue of KRW 727.2 billion, marking a massive 37.8% year-over-year (YoY) increase from Q3 2024. In contrast, Q3 2024 reported revenue of KRW 527.8 billion, which was actually a 1.9% YoY decline, which actually attributed to fewer album releases due to the Paris Olympics , according to their official website. This outstanding revenue surge in 2025 just goes to show the explosive success of global tours and merchandise despite a lighter overall album schedule. So will 2026 see an even bigger increase in revenue? Impact and Fan Reaction The surprising Q3 profitability of NewJeans' label, despite the group being largely inactive, sparked significant discussion among the fanbase on social media. Many fans took to online platforms to question the source of the high revenue, with comments asking how they "made that much" during a standstill period with little to no activity. The Dojeon team, however, believes that the profits came from their commercial activities and investors, and even the news and interviews around NewJeans and ADOR, as bad press still helped their stock prices and place in the market. Final thoughts HYBE has so much influence and power that the Dojeon team firmly believes it will increase their profits next year, despite any losses that they may incur. Bad press is still press, and it brings interest to the organization, along with K-pop's growing rise outside of Korea. Comment below and let the Dojeon team know your thoughts on these record-breaking revenues! #HYBE #NewJeans #KPopBusiness #Q3Earnings #ADOR #KPopFinancials
- Kim Yo-han Returns With "Love.exe": Story, Cast & All Romance Moments Fans Are Waiting For!
Kim Yo-han and Hwang Bo-reum-byeol as the main leads in Love.exe (Credits: Wavve) If you’ve been craving a light, youthful K-romance with an actually fresh setup, Love.exe, also known as The 4th Love Revolution , might be your next obsession. The drama premiered on November 13, 2025 , exclusively on Wavve , and honestly, it’s serving that perfect blend of chaos, sweetness, and campus banter fans love. What makes it stand out? It throws two completely opposite worlds into one space: a popular model-influencer and a logic-driven engineering genius. When their lives collide, everything from pride to emotions starts glitching… in the cutest way possible. Love.exe (Credits: Wavve) Story: When Logic Meets Romance (And Error Codes) The premise kicks off with a university merger that forces the modeling department and the computer-engineering department to share their curriculum. Naturally, this means two groups who don’t vibe at all get shoved into the same classroom. Kang Min-hak ( Kim Yo-han ) is the bright, carefree model with over a million followers. He’s charming, unbothered, and honestly a little clueless behind the glam. On the other hand, Ju Yeon-san ( Hwang Bo-reum-byeol ) is a coding prodigy who lives inside equations. Love? Not in her logical dictionary. Their first interactions are messy, loud, and absolutely hilarious. She sees him as a walking distraction. He sees her as someone who desperately needs to lighten up. But the more their lives overlap, the more their “systems” begin malfunctioning, and yup, those emotional error codes hit hard. Love.exe still (Credits: Wavve) Cast: The Faces Running This System Kim Yo-han is perfectly cast as Min-hak, the golden-boy influencer who’s surprisingly soft once the camera turns off. His charm brings the character to life effortlessly. Hwang Bo-reum-byeol transforms into Yeon-San, the engineering genius who can solve any code but has zero experience debugging her own feelings. Watching her slowly let Min-hak into her perfectly structured world is pure serotonin. The supporting lineup adds texture and humor, too. You’ll see Minseo and Kwon Young-eun as Yeon-san’s engineering buddies, plus Lim Sung-kyun and Lee Ji-hye delivering campus chaos, warmth, and comedic timing that rounds out the world nicely. Love.exe still (Credits: Wavve) Why Fans Are Losing It (In a Good Way) The hype around Love.exe isn’t random because fans are buzzing for several reasons. First, this drama marks Kim Yo-han and Hwang Bo-reum-byeol’s reunion after School 2021 , and viewers can instantly feel how far they’ve grown as actors! Their chemistry feels comfortable yet fresh, like they picked up right where they left off, but with better scripts and better timing. Second, the “love as a system error” concept is genuinely fun. It’s not overly tech-heavy; it’s just symbolic enough to give the show a unique identity. Watching Yeon-san glitch when unfamiliar feelings pop up? Cute. Watching Min-hak get confused when she treats emotional moments like math problems? Even better. And yes — those teaser clips where Min-hak keeps unintentionally flustering Yeon-san? Fans are replaying them like crazy. Where to Watch Love.exe Love.exe is currently streaming on Wavve, with 8 episodes to binge. Each episode runs roughly 60–70 minutes. International fans can stream the K-drama on the Viu app or website. Final Take If you love college romances, mismatched personalities, light humor, and soft emotional glow-ups, you’ll vibe with Love.exe instantly. It’s simple, adorable, and uses the coding metaphor in a fun but heartwarming way. It’s honestly the kind of show that doesn’t demand too much from you but still leaves you smiling. #Loveexe #KimYoHan #HwangBoReumByeol #collegeromance
- Age and Authority on Screen: The Meaning Behind “Oppa”, “Noona”, and “Ahjumma” in K-Dramas
We take a deep dive into the beloved, often hilarious moments to understand the meaning and cultural significance of these three essential Korean titles, often splattered all over K-dramas! Plus, we give you some juicy titles you don't want to miss! "Oppa", "Noona", & "Ahjumma": The Language of Love and Hierarchy in Korean Dramas K-dramas highlight the romantic tension of the 'noona romance' , which pairs older women with a younger man. The oppa-ahjumma dynamic is also culturally important in K-dramas because it challenges the rigid social norms that surround age and hierarchy. Let's check out the significance of these terms; Oppa (오빠): This is a term that is often used by a female to address an older brother or a close older male friend/boyfriend. It implies affection and closeness, but usually refers to a man who is still considered young or not past middle age, which is a term that you will hear very often in your favorite K-dramas and in day-to-day life in Korea! Ahjumma (아줌마): This is a term used for a middle-aged (often married) woman. While it can be used affectionately, it often carries a sense of formality in a very hierarchy-based society, and it's often used as a generational divide, or can even be mildly dismissive, invoking the cultural weight of aging and a particular social status. Noona (누나): This is a term used by a male to address an older sister or a close older female friend, often used respectfully and affectionately. When a man calls his older partner 'noona' in a drama, it's respecting her position in the age hierarchy, and at times, it also heightens romantic tensions. Ultimately, these terms serve as a powerful form of social commentary, reflecting and encouraging modern shifts toward valuing emotional connection over established seniority in relationships, which has been the baseline to some of the best K-dramas! In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the many K-dramas that showcase the 'noona romance' in a spectacular way, and some of the best 'oppa and ahjumma' on-screen moments. Something in the Rain (2018) First up, we have Something in the Rain, which focuses on a single woman in her 30s, Yoon Jin-ah ( Son Ye-jin ), who is struggling with her career and dating life, and reconnects with her best friend's younger brother, Seo Joon-hee ( Jung Hae-in ), who has returned from working abroad. As their relationship blossoms from a comfortable friendship into a passionate, secret romance, they face intense scrutiny and judgment from their families and society. The drama deeply explores the difficulties they face in maintaining their love amid toxic corporate culture and familial expectations. This drama, thanks to its deep storyline, hit home with many Korean viewers and became well known for highlighting social issues that are rarely discussed. Wonderful World (2024) Wonderful World follows a storyline of trauma and emotional healing, and at its core, a big age gap. Eun Soo-hyun ( Kim Nam-joo ) is a successful psychology professor whose life is shattered after the tragic loss of her son and her subsequent decision to seek revenge. She forms a deep, unconventional bond with Kwon Seon-yul ( Cha Eun-woo ), a mysterious young man who has also faced a devastating loss and a difficult life. While not a conventional office romance, their relationship is a powerful exploration of two broken individuals finding emotional refuge and healing in each other, defying social expectations due to their age difference and circumstances. This Disney+ drama is a great example of the oppa-ahjummas storyline, you do not want to miss! Branding in Seongsu (2024) Starting as an office romance with a supernatural body-swap twist. Branding in Seongsu is a cold yet brilliant drama which you do not want to miss! This demonstrates some of the best culturally used titles in a subtle yet hilarious way! Kang Na-eon ( Kim Ji-eun ) is an older marketing team leader, while So Eun-ho ( Park Solomon ) is a friendly, younger intern she often dismisses. Their typical hierarchical office dynamic is literally inverted when their bodies swap after an unexpected kiss. The drama uses the swap and the significant age/title difference to force them to walk a mile in each other's shoes, leading to a romantic understanding that challenges their prior work-based, age-driven perceptions. The hierarchy is something which Koreans take very seriously in society, and as a result, it is often expected that a younger person show respect to their elders even if it is not deserved. Encounter (2018) Following a wealthy daughter-in-law, Encounter follows the life of Cha Soo-hyun ( Song Hye-kyo ) and the younger, more free-spirited Kim Jin-hyuk ( Park Bo-gum ). During a life-changing business venture, including a trip to Cuba, their paths cross when Jin-hyuk is hired at the hotel where Soo-hyun is the CEO. Their budding romance is immediately challenged by the enormous social and class differences, media scrutiny, and the controlling demands of Soo-hyun's powerful ex-in-laws. The oppa-ahjumma role is clear from the outset! You do not want to miss this classic K-drama! A Witch's Romance (2014) Ban Ji-yeon ( Uhm Jung-hwa ) is a highly passionate and successful 39-year-old investigative reporter nicknamed "The Witch" after being jilted by her fiancé years ago. It turns out that she had a tumultuous and funny encounter with Yoon Dong-ha ( Park Seo-joon ), a charming and carefree 25-year-old who runs an all-purpose errand service. Despite their age difference and her resistance to romance, their relationship quickly becomes complicated and passionate as they help each other heal from past emotional scars. Get a box of tissues at the ready, and get settled down to watch this amazing K-drama! Romance is a Bonus Book (2019) This K-drama focuses on Kang Dan-i ( Lee Na-young ), a highly qualified former copywriter who put her career on hold to raise a family. She struggles to find a job after her divorce and ends up lying to get a temporary position at a publishing house. Cha Eun-ho ( Lee Jong-suk ) is the youngest and most successful editor, and it turns out that he has secretly loved her for years. As the storyline progresses, he finally builds up the courage to build a romantic future with her, even though there is an age gap and a history between them. This storyline resonated with a lot of Koreans and has since become one of the prime examples of the oppa-noona phrase. Which drama is your favorite? Comment below and let the Dojeon team know! - “The Manipulated” Review: Ji Chang-wook Redefines Survival As Art but D.O.’s Actions Will Leave You Fuming
From its very first scene, The Manipulated announces itself like a quiet threat - no jump scares, no melodramatic sound cues, just a slow tightening of the emotional noose. It’s the kind of thriller that doesn’t shove you off the cliff; it politely walks you to the edge and lets gravity do the rest. With its chilly polish and nerve-prickling tension, the series makes one thing instantly clear: you’re not just watching a revenge drama, you’re being lured into a psychological maze. Read on for our review! Directed by Park Sin-woo and Kim Chang-joo, written by Oh Sang-ho, and co-starring Doh Kyung-soo, aka D.O. from EXO , this 12-episode rollercoaster was released on Disney+ on November 5, with weekly drops till December 3. A Deliveryman, a Brother, and a Life That Drops Faster Than an Online Order Park Tae-jung ( Ji Chang-wook ) is introduced as the kind of earnest, overworked citizen any modern economy runs on and routinely ignores. His entire world is his younger brother, Tae-jin, and the shared dream of a life slightly better than “barely scraping by". But The Manipulated wastes no time turning that modest life into a crime thriller’s worst nightmare. One wrong night. One dead woman. One stack of “coincidences” so perfectly arranged it’s practically a scrapbook of doom. Suddenly, Tae-jung isn’t just unlucky - he’s a target. And not the fun kind where you earn loyalty points. Enter: An Yo-han - the Human Equivalent of a Calm, Silent Warning D.O. ( Doh Kyung-soo ) barely needs dialogue to project danger. His portrayal of An Yo-han, the enigmatic puppeteer tugging at Tae-jung’s already-fraying sanity, feels disturbingly effortless. He’s not mustache-twirling evil; he’s the minimalist villain - a blank screen your worst fears can project onto. Even with limited early appearances, D.O. radiates that “don’t trust me but also don’t look away” energy. It’s the slow-burn antagonist performance K-drama fans will absolutely obsess over. Ji Chang-wook: Acting With His Eyes and His Silence Ji Chang-wook in The Manipulated (Credits: Disney+) If Ji Chang-wook has entered his “quietly devastating” acting era, we're here for it. His performance is a study in controlled implosion. He plays Tae-jung like a man constantly swallowing a scream-gentle one moment, gutted the next, and occasionally erupting with a rage that feels too raw to be staged. Even in the pauses, you can hear the heartbreak. His silence carries more emotional violence than most monologues. This is not your usual heroic rage machine; this is a man learning, painfully, how small he is against a world wired against him. A Director Who Understands That Fear Lives in Tight Spaces Director Park Shin-woo doesn’t create tension by making things bigger; he makes them smaller . Parking garages, interrogation rooms, cramped apartments, anonymous alleyways, everything feels just tight enough that you unconsciously start sitting straighter. The whole show is styled like a psychological chokehold. The muted palette, the sharp editing, the moody score that hums beneath the storyline without hijacking it. Familiar Blueprint, But Delivered With Premium Packaging Yes, the “ordinary man crushed by extraordinary corruption” trope is a K-drama classic at this point. But The Manipulated doesn’t try to outsmart the genre; it simply respects it. It trims the excess, sharpens the edges, and lets the characters do the heavy lifting. Every twist lands harder because you’ve been made to care, not because the plot screams for attention. And honestly? Sometimes refinement is better than reinvention. Alongside Ji Chang-wook, the lineup features Kim Jong-soo ( Gangnam B-side , 2024), Jo Yoon-soo ( The Tyrant , 2024), and Lee Kwang-soo ( Karma , 2025) - every actor cranks up the chaos, tension, and chemistry. Final Verdict The Manipulated is a sleek, tense, emotionally charged thriller that knows exactly what it’s doing. It’s not chaotic; it’s calculated. Not loud; just chillingly precise. With Ji Chang-wook delivering one of his most compelling performances and D.O.’s enigmatic villainy lurking like a storm cloud, the opening episodes promise a series that’s gripping, polished, and dangerously addictive. Episodes 7 and 8 will be released tonight! Make sure to catch it and let us know your thoughts! Do let us know, are you watching The Manipulated hits Disney+? #TheManipulated #Kdramareview
- Generation Gap Inverted: South Korea’s Demographic Time Bomb, From Cardboard Grannies to K-Drama Narratives
We explore the challenges and opportunities presented by South Korea's rapidly graying populace. Will Korea be able to rise above this concerning issue? Let's dive in! Image: Korean Generations - Photo: freepik.com The population of individuals aged 70 and above is rapidly growing, approaching or even surpassing the size of the cohort of young adults in their 20s. This reversal is caused by the combined forces of plummeting birth rates , which shrink the base of younger generations, and increased human longevity, which swells the ranks of older retirees. This shift fundamentally challenges the traditional structure of society, in which a large, youthful working population was historically relied upon to support a smaller, older generation. So what is being done about this catastrophic social nightmare? This article will feature some K-dramas that discuss this ever-growing problem. Cultural Erosion and Family Strain in South Korea Koreans are known for following the more traditional family methods, which require the adults to care for their elderly parents, though as the digital age becomes more apparent and the more modern side of society creeps in, many young Koreans are starting to feel the strain. K-dramas like My Mister (2018) often depict this by showing younger adults struggling with their own economic precarity while simultaneously attempting to care for or cope with the isolation of their older relatives. This dynamic has resulted in the elderly often being perceived as a societal burden rather than respected family figures, tragically contributing to Korea’s high rate of elderly poverty and isolation. This drama has since been used as an example of the low birth rates that we have been hearing about more recently, and it has been used to help people who are struggling realize this is sadly becoming the new normal in Korean households. Representation of the "Agequake" in K-Dramas K-dramas directly tackle the "Agequake" by foregrounding the lives and struggles of older characters, challenging the industry's historical focus on the young. The critically acclaimed series Dear My Friends (2016) is a prime example, centering entirely on a group of elderly friends who are shown as complex, independent individuals dealing with aging, illness, and their own agency, rather than just being supporting mothers or grandmothers. Furthermore, K-dramas like Move to Heaven (2021) and The Light in Your Eyes (2019) explore the heartbreaking realities of elderly neglect, social isolation, and health issues like Alzheimer's, making these social problems visible to a global audience. Since there is a lack of social care for the elderly population in Korea, compared to other countries, visitors and the Korean population will notice a growing number of elderly people experiencing health problems or collecting cardboard . Social and Cultural Motivations The reasons why many elderly Koreans can be found wandering the streets collecting cardboard are complex; however, it is mainly driven by financial necessity. In fact, for over 80 percent of collectors (A December 2023 article in the Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the Ministry of Health estimated that at least 80 percent of the older adults collecting waste papers were doing so for "economic reasons, ranging from main incomes to pocket money) , the simple collection of cardboard can allow them t o put a roof over their head and provide them with basic living expenses for the month. Historically, Confucian culture placed the burden of elder care on adult children. This system has largely collapsed, leaving many elderly isolated or financially abandoned, yet they are often too proud to apply for full government assistance, unlike in some Western countries, where people often feel entitled, as it requires them to formally declare that their children are unable or unwilling to support them. Since Korea was a very poor country until the late 1980s and early 1990s, many people at the time either got rich quickly or fell below the poverty line, which is very clear in the consumer culture today. Dignity and Purpose Many Korean seniors are very proud of their strong work ethic, and from a young age, it is ingrained that they are mainly set to look out for themselves and to provide for their families. Collecting cardboard keeps them physically active, provides a sense of purpose , and helps them avoid the crushing loneliness and boredom of sitting at home alone, which is all too common in Western countries, where the elderly spend time watching TV at home or in a community center, with a lack of exercise and purpose. Younger Generation's Plight The younger Korean generation, more so in their 20s, is suffering a "Hell Joseon", thanks to the economic problems, elderly population, and the housing crisis, which keeps pushing back life milestones such as buying a house or having kids. This shrinking workforce is trapped between their own financial struggles and the immense burden of funding the large elderly population, leading to fierce intergenerational conflict over job competition and retirement age policies. Sadly, lots of young Koreans are committing suicide or having mental health problems, which has been a taboo problem until recent years. It seems like this is a cycle in which there is no real solution, even with bringing in foreign workers into the economy and culture, which the Dojeon team believes Korea is not yet ready for. Can a phone call between President Lee Jae-myung and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi start something big? This Week, President Lee Brings South Korea to Egypt for Historic Talks This week, Cairo will host President Lee as he arrives for a landmark official visit. The visit marks 30 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and South Korea , first established in 1995. Will Cairo see a historic moment when President Lee visits? Before Egypt, President Lee will visit Abu Dhabi from November 17–19, where he will meet UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed . They are expected to discuss investment, defense, technology, healthcare, and culture, and may sign a memorandum on AI and defense cooperation. This visit comes after a preparatory mission in September, when Special Envoy Park Beom-ki delivered a message from President Lee , thanking Egypt for its support on peace efforts in the Korean Peninsula and his intention to meet with President El-Sisi . And the big question is: Will this visit be a turning point in Egypt-South Korea relations, a story of friendship, cooperation, and new opportunities? As it is the first time for President Lee to visit Egypt, will November 2025 be remembered as the month Cairo became the center of history, or just another visit? It was revealed at the Disney+ Originals Preview 2026 event in Hong Kong, followed by CJ ENM confirming their collaboration with Japan’s Nippon TV. From the moment the posters dropped, fans knew this one was going to deliver cozy countryside romance with a soft healing vibe. What Is Merry Berry Love About? Merry Berry Love tells the story of two people who meet on a quiet, remote island in Japan. Their worlds could not be more different, yet fate puts them side by side at the exact moment they need it. The lead male character, Lee Yoo-bin, is a Korean space planner whose career has pretty much fallen apart. He is frustrated, exhausted, and ready to escape the chaos of city life, so he moves to an island, hoping for a fresh start. On the same island, we meet Shirahama Karin, a young Japanese strawberry farmer who lives a simple but meaningful life. She has grown up around the fields and has no plans of leaving her peaceful routine anytime soon. Her world is stable until Lee Yoo-bin appears. Their first encounter is expected to be awkward, sweet, and probably a little comedic. But from there, a quiet romance begins to grow, just like the berries Karin nurtures every day. His character is someone trying to rebuild his life after failure, and the countryside setting makes his journey even more comforting. Imada Mio plays Shirahama Karin, the strawberry farmer who slowly becomes the emotional anchor of the story. Her calmness and strength balance Yoo-bin’s chaos, setting the stage for a gentle, steady romance. The series is directed by Kim Soo-jung, known for the hit BL drama Semantic Error , and written by Lee Jae-yoon, the writer behind The Divorce Insurance . With this team, the drama aims to deliver genuine emotion without unnecessary drama or noise. - Your Ultimate Guide to Surviving (and Enjoying) Winter in Korea! [From Food to Clothing, We Have You Covered!]
We have the essential packing lists, must-try hot street foods, and tips for staying warm during the coldest months in South Korea. The Dojeon Media Team has you covered! Image: Seoul during Winter - Photo: 10mag.com Winter in Korea is notoriously cold, and although shops like Diaso sell hand packs and thermals for very affordable prices, are they enough to keep you from freezing? In this article, we will focus on how to stay warm this winter! Clothing & Layering Essentials Korea is cold during winter, and no matter how many layers you wear, you will still feel it! Therefore, layering is non-negotiable if you want to survive Korean winters. The key here is to start with base thermals and layer from there. Long padding (long-padded jackets) is also highly recommended by us, as this ankle-length padding will shield you from top to bottom and really help you brave strong winds. Wearing a hat and gloves adds heat security, we know from experience. Heating and Home Comfort This is the most important thing to survive winter! Most Korean houses have an underfloor heating system called 'ondol', which will heat you from the bottom up and at the same time provide a cozy winter feel. Another hack to stay warm and cozy at home is to consider buying an electric blanket. Lewis Hooper from the Dojeon team has used one in the UK in the past and said that it was a lifesaver, especially if you are prone to having a damp room . A lot of older Korean homes also tend to use bubble wrap on their windows to prevent drafts from coming in, and at the same time, it is an inexpensive solution to try and keep your house warm. Food for Warmth Food is another great idea if you want to keep warm during the winter, and Korea has some amazing winter foods ! Some of the traditional warm foods are literally a lifesaver, and for the most part, they are cheap and can be found on most streets. Dishes like Kimchi Jjigae or Sundubu Jjigae are spicy and served boiling, providing immediate internal warmth. On the corner of most streets, you can find vendors selling treats like Hotteok (sweet sugar pancakes) or Odeng (fish cake skewers in broth) to enjoy while walking, and these are popular with locals and tourists alike. One of Lewis Hooper's favorites is Yuja-cha ( a citron tea) or Saenggang-cha (ginger tea), which are popular Korean winter remedies to help prevent colds and warm your insides. These remedies are the perfect mix to fight off colds and at the same time they both taste great! Final thoughts Korean winters are amazing with the blue skies and endless winter activities; however, they are brutally cold and long. Hand packs are a Dojeon go-to for staying warm, while at the same time drinking hot tea while roaming the beautiful streets of Korea. Our favorite go-to dish is Kimchi jjigae, a must-try on your Korean adventure this winter! How do you prepare for winter in Korea? - Seoul’s PC Bang Culture in K-Dramas Take Gaming to a Whole New Stratosphere!
From ramyeon-fueled all-nighters to professional gaming hubs, this is what YOU NEED to know about PC bangs (internet cafés) in Korea! Image: Inside a South Korean PC room - Photo: stay.enkor.kr The social role of the PC Bang as a communal gathering spot for all generations is something that is still widely accepted today, despite most people owning a laptop, smartphone, and other electronic devices themselves. For many, a PC Bang is an essential "third place" or a social hub away from the confines of small homes and the high pressures of demanding academic or professional life, which are all too common in Korea. They are also affordable, fun, and an easy environment to relax or work in, and as a result, have solidified the PC Bang as a crucial space for social bonding and community in South Korean culture, which is why they have appeared on countless K-dramas in the past. Why do they appear in so many K-dramas? If you are a K-drama fan , then we are sure that you will have noticed PC Bangs appearing in K-dramas fairly often. Most K-dramas are culturally ubiquitous in terms of where they are set the show, in a bid to attract younger viewership by showing everyday life and social norms. Within K-dramas, they ultimately highlight a unique, multi-functional aspect of Korean culture that is relatable to domestic audiences and fascinating to international viewers. If you have ever visited Korea, then you will understand! A Space for Escape and Conflict In most of the K-dramas that we know and love today, a PC Bang is often used due to its perfect backdrops when it comes to mini conflict points, such as when characters run into an old enemy or rival, or perhaps when they meet a love interest for the first time. They really are a great setting for dramas! A PC Bang is often used to show a character's need for an escape from the pressures of work, family, or school, common for many young Koreans today. A tired office worker stopping by after work, or a high school student secretly gaming, highlights their everyday stresses. 24-hour snacks and entertainment A PC Bang is a great place for people of all ages, thanks to the convenient prices and quick and simple food services that go along with it. Users are able to stay for extended periods of time without being interrupted, as well as being able to game or use the PCs for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
