With many young Koreans trying to find their place within Korean society, the fiery TV show Culinary Class Wars has taken Korea and Netflix by storm! Is this show more than entertainment? We find out! Young Koreans have been having a hard time as of late, competing for jobs, body image and their place within Korean society. The Netflix show Culinary Class Wars is no different, as it showcases contestants from various backgrounds and beliefs all competing for the same end goal, and it has no signs of slowing down. In fact, the shows popularity has transcended borders, with the Netflix show ranking as the most-watched non-English series globally for two consecutive weeks since its release on Sept. 17th! It has gained particular traction in Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with growing numbers coming from the UK and the US. So what is the concept of the show? 100 renowned chefs and undiscovered talents go head to head in a culinary battle, and the winner will take home a whopping 300 million won (KRW) which is 222,000 USD! The show is judged by the esteemed Paik Jong Won and Chef Anh Sung Jae, which both look for the ultimate yet creative dishes from the contestants. Captivated viewers have taken to social media to express their view and predictions on the show, and stating that this show REALLY IS worth your time! How are the contestants divided? Although the show is titled Culinary Class Wars it is not about rich versus poor contestants. In fact, the 'unknown' chefs are the black spoons and they are given nicknames during the show instead of using their actual names. That said, some of the black spoons are well-known and therefore recognized by others from other cooking competitions, but this show is anyone's game. There also white spoons, which have gained fame and worldwide acclaim or they are already established chefs in the industry. The divide of black and white spoons is a more fair way to divide the contestants into groups. So what has happened in the show so far? So far in this dramatic series, it has been compared at times to have the same tension as Squid Game due to the shifting-alliances instability to its cooking-competition format, but this isn’t a series interested in theory or chance. Culinary Class Wars is about individual glory, and its political framing is merely a grabby front. And yet, It’s a blast because what Culinary Class Wars actually pulls off is the total shake-up of a stale genre of TV cooking shows. Black and White spoons have gone head to head on a number of challenges, and by doing so they have made viewers mouths water at home. During much of the first half hour of the first few episodes, no cooking occurs; the 80 chefs file in and chat with each other, then the 20 White Spoon chefs are individually introduced, then all the rules are laid out. It’s all done in an over-the-top manner like it’s a sporting event, but it made us antsy to actually see the Black Spoon group cooking. After that, though, the show proceeds like an extra-large Quickfire Challenge. The producers do a good job of highlighting certain chefs as the judges eliminate them or move them on to the final 20 Black Spoon contestants. But, given the fact that this is only half of the 80 that will be winnowed down to 20, we’re wondering how monotonous finding the 20 Black Spoons that will go up against the White Spoons is going to get. The show has been since dwindled down to the final eight contestants, so it really is anyone's game. Who has the best culinary skills? Solo movie-watching in Korea has become the latest trend after solo drinking and dining out , but why?! We dig deeper to find out about this new phenomenon! In Korea it is not unusual to see people out alone, perhaps dining in a restaurant or drinking in a coffee shop or bar, as many Koreans are single which has affected Korea's notorious low birth rate. Just a few years ago, Korean society looked down on solo activities since they gave a sense of "having no friends" or "being lonely", but all that has changed recently! Solo activities including solo vacations have gained popularity in recent years, and heading to the cinema to watch a movie alone has become the latest trend. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching a film at home alone, however, part of going to the cinema for me is to share the experience with someone else, or even have a cute date night there. According to CGV , one of South Korea's largest cinema chains, the percentage of single-person viewings reached about 25 percent during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, influenced by social distancing measures. Post-pandemic, the trend persisted, with single-person audience percentages recorded at 17 percent in 2022, 19 percent in 2023, and a slight rise to 21 percent as of Sept. 18, 2024. Similarly, Lotte Cinema reported a 1 percent year-on-year increase in single-person ticket sales from January to August 2024. Let's take a look at this video! Celebrities have also embraced this trend, sharing their solo movie experiences with fans. Kang Min Kyung of the musical duo Davichi , for example, showcased her solo movie outing on her YouTube channel. This of course will influence the trend in Korean society as many Koreans tend to be a fan of the idol culture. This has however helped the cinema sector, as due to inflation many people have decided to opt out for the cinema and watch streaming apps at home such as Netflix, Amazon or Disney+. Of course, all the singletons heading to the cinema will aid the box office recovery. TVING is set to release another K-drama, Love in the Big City , which is scheduled to premiere on October 21, 2024. This time, LGBTQ+ Scenes will be at the forefront, paving the way for more open-minded Koreans. We introduce some other similar dramas that might interest you as well! So what is this drama about? This 8-part series has been adapted for TV from the novel of the same name by Park Sang Young, Love in the Big City follows the friendship between a pair of roommates: a gay man by the name of Go Yeong ( Nam Yoon Soo Beyond Evil 2021), who struggles with getting his mother’s acceptance, and a woman, Mi Ae ( Lee Soo Kyung Adamas 2022). After letting go of the love of his life, Go Yeong follows a stranger on vacation to Thailand where he reflects on his wounds and finds himself, I mean what better place to go than the backpacker capital of the world? Let's take a look at a trailer! I have to say that I am pleased TVING has featured a gay relationship for a change, and it shows that Korea is slowly progressing and changing their views as a nation. The trailer certainly showcases the feelings and emotions and shows the character falling in love which is really nice to see. LGBTQ in K-dramas In recent years, there has been a trend of increased representation of LGBTQ+ relationships in Korean dramas . South Korea is traditionally an extremely conservative country, but this trend may be showing a shift in attitudes toward the queer community, as global attitudes have been changing in recent years. Media and entertainment in Korea, play a unique factor in shaping public opinion, especially when it comes to the perception of marginalized groups. When LGBTQ+ stories in visual media have tragic endings or promulgate stereotypes, they perpetuate the idea that queer relationships are inherently wrong or lesser than those of cisgender heterosexuals, or cishets.  In South Korea, being LGBTQ+ is still perceived as unnatural or as a disability. Mental illness is even considered to be a sin in some communities. While homosexuality is not criminalized in Korea, there is widespread discrimination against the community. Many queer Koreans are subjected to job loss, social ostracization, and even violence if they are outed. Other popular K-dramas have also featured LGBTQ+ couples: Fans have been taking to social media platforms such as X to express their series predictions and excitement about the new show" I think that that K-drama is a feel good drama to watch, and I have already marked the premier date in my calendar. The On1y One , a Taiwanese BL drama, has taken the BL world by storm. Even without major promotion, this hidden gem on Netflix quickly captured the hearts of fans worldwide. It's IMDb rating of 9.1/10 shows just how much viewers have fallen for it! Korean BL dramas have long held a special place in fans’ hearts for their emotional portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships in challenging environments. Dojeon's Café of the Month for October was an easy choice. Let's take a look at why Crosswalk Coffee Shop has made it on our list! This café has made it as my café of the month for October for good reason. Not only does it have a catchy and fun name (Yes, it is located at a crosswalk) but the modern design and bright and airy space make it the perfect place to study, chill out, or get your coffee fix. This cute café has also received lots of positive feedback on Naver. Let's take a look at some of the great feedback. Every time I visit this café, I opt for the vanilla ice americano, which always seems to hit the spot. Crosswalk has also been dabbling in a range of freshly baked goods , which tickle my senses every time I walk into the shop and I think this is why I keep coming back! A great thing about Crosswalk is that it is located right next to several schools, a river resort, and a residential area, so there is always a steady flow of interesting people. For me, I love people watching, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let in all of the natural light, which makes it a great place to sit and sip my coffee, as I watch people walk by, and of course, I daydream and wonder what everyone is doing. The big natural windows also allow for the perfect place to sit and read a book, as well as creating the perfect working space. Since I work from home often, Crosswalk is a great place to come and work and watch the world go by. The prices at Crosswalk are competitive for the area, and an ice americano will only set you back 2,500 KRW (USD 1.85), which is a great price for the quality! In terms of the location, this place has on-the-street parking, and just across the road, there is a beautiful park that you can visit after, not to mention the peaceful Dongchon resort area in Daegu where there is a host of places to walk, amazing natural scenery and places to park. There's a new K-pop boy group garnering much attention in South Korea! 1VERSE features two North Korean defectors, one Chinese-American, and one Japanese trainee! We give you all the details you need to know before this group debuts! A change for the K-pop industry on a global scale, as two North Korean defectors are confirmed as part of a new K-pop group 1VERSE! Yoo Hyuk and Kim Seok , are North Korean defectors set to become K-pop idols. This is a far cry from the days when the boys had to survive in a closed society, which was very regimented and stopped them from pursuing their dreams on the K-pop stage. Yoo Hyuk and Kim Seok's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite the challenges they faced, their passion for music and determination have led them to this point having fled North Korea . The other members are the band are Murata Aito from Japan and Kenny who is a Chinese-American. This mix of a group shows a diverse skill set, and the boys have signed under the talent label Singing Beetle . Now, of course, the mix of ethnicity has sparked some excitement, but also some controversy, nevertheless this is a milestone not to be missed for both the North Korean defector community and the K-pop industry as a whole. Having watched the video, I do like the melody as it appears to be catchy with synchronized dance moves and lighting to match the speed of the set, however, I do think the style could have been changed in terms of dress code and choreography since the dancing does seem to have been done over and over with other boy groups, that said what 1VERSE does is showcased well is showcase a mix of diverse skills to a large global audience. If you were not aware, two of the members of 1VERSE hold South Korean citizenship, Yu Hyuk and Kim Seok. BBC's Made in Korea: Dear Alice has been in full swing now for several weeks and fans have taken to social media to express their opinions on the show and predictions on what will happen next. We have all the juicy details so read on to find out more! As we discussed and saw in the first two episodes Heejin, the SM Entertainment casting director, gave the boys harsh feedback which some of them took to heart as other fans have said. BiliBili fan review: By far the most stomach-churning moment, though, comes when the boys have their weekly assessment with Hee Jun Yoon, one of the K-pop industry’s most respected names. During the band's feedback sessions, we can see Heejin being very critical of her feedback towards the members. The leading South Korean K-pop music agencies are known for their rigorous and years-long training programs, which have come under fire at times for being exploitative of talent. Disillusioned performers have complained of being overworked, underpaid, abused , and unprotected by contracts that fail to fairly and responsibly manage their careers. Criticism of such practices has led to unionization and some improvements in conditions for performers. However, as members of the world-famous girl group Blackpink and others have attested , the training required to reach the heights of industry success remains extremely rigorous and all-consuming of performers’ time and energy. SM’s website makes a subtle nod to previous critiques of the industry’s methods by stating its commitment to “setting the gold standard for responsible management in the industry”. This does not mean a soft approach to raising chart-topping talent, however. Let's take a look at one of the clips of the boys feedback sessions: The negative feedback is unsurprising. A Blackpink documentary released on Netflix in 2020 leaves the viewer with the impression that those who survive the “trainee system” must possess an extraordinary degree of mental resilience – perhaps over and above their vocal talent and ability to learn choreography. Overall, the boys have shown clear improvement since week one, in terms of becoming a team, their dance routine and vocals , I think if they had more time to train though, or at least, if they were under a stricter schedule, they wouldn't have much bonding time. The segment between James and Olly made it clear that they have quite a bit of free time, or at least have had a few outings over the weeks they've been training where not all the boys had to be present for filming. The show filmed the boys over a 100 day period where they worked with some top names within the K-pop industry. As part of the training and experience for the band, they made a live performance at the British Embassy in Seoul: Throughout the series, the show featured many hours of the boys being devoted to training, and it’s tough. Mostly, this consists of hours of classes with vocal and dance coaches in SM Entertainment’s headquarters – aka one of the most prestigious musical agencies in the entire country, with names like Riize , Aespa and Red Velvet on their books! On Reddit some fans expressed that they were confused by the time scale of the show, let's check out some of the feedback that has been trending by fans: Episode 4 highlights, challenges, concerns As we see here , Dexter, James, Olly and Reese try to build bridges with band member Blaise, who’s feeling increasingly isolated from the rest of the band. It was to be expected that some of the members would clash, and of course being thrown into a band, spending all day together and living together wit different personalities would be a struggle at times. There was lots of mental health support offered to the members during the filming of the show, as we saw in all of the episodes when the boys received their group and individual welfare check. Despite claiming to be a “unique experiment” with its British membership, Made in Korea is not the first time non-Korean hopefuls have faced the K-pop training machine. A number of non-Koreans make up some of K-pop’s most popular acts, including Blackpink, which features a Thai member , and Seventeen , which has members from China and the US, and some featuring North Korean defectors among others. After the series finished airing, in the final episode, Heejin was non-committal in answering one of the band members' questions, when he asked, "Do you really think we have what it takes?", and she answered, "If you keep up the hard work". Since the show, the band has been working hard and trying to debut on children's TV in the UK such as CCBC to gain a fan base and get there name out there. What else would you expect, though? This is a fascinating behind-the-curtain peek at one of the music industry’s toughest genres, and it doesn’t pull its punches in showing exactly how high the bar is for its young competitors. If Dear Alice makes it through training and evaluation, it’s unclear whether they will be subject to the same moral and behavioral standards required of groups made up of predominantly Korean members, and this is understandable due to the difference in culture and expectations between Korean and the UK in terms of musical talent. However, if SM Entertainment is to put its name to the group’s management, there is no question that these five young men will have to learn to bounce back from tough criticism – and show a willingness to learn and improve to a level beyond anything they have achieved before, and I am sure they are able to reach their potential with more work, dedication and perseverance. The K-pop industry is once again embroiled in controversy, with NCT's Taeil facing serious allegations. Comparisons to the infamous Burning Sun Scandal  and TikTok star "Mama Guy’s" recent controversy are already surfacing, adding fuel to the fire. On October 8, 2024 , Chosun Ilbo  reported that NCT member Taeil had been accused of assaulting an intoxicated woman  without her consent. Allegedly, there were multiple perpetrators, including two of Taeil's non-celebrity friends. Taeil and his two friends have been charged with quasi-rape , a severe crime under South Korean law. Due to the sensitive nature of the victim's identity and Taeil's celebrity status, the case has been handed over to the Seoul Central Prosecutor’s Office  without detention. Understanding Quasi-Rape in South Korean Law Quasi-rape refers to assaulting someone who is intoxicated or unconscious , often involving threats or the presence of multiple attackers. In such cases, the victim cannot resist, and this crime is treated with the same seriousness as standard sexual assault. According to Article 299 of South Korean Law , any form of assault that takes advantage of a victim's incapacitated state is punishable by a minimum of three years in prison. If Taeil is found guilty, he could face up to seven years or more in prison, as outlined by Article 300 . Past Scandals in the K-pop Industry: Burning Sun Scandal and More This isn’t the first time a K-pop idol has been involved in such serious charges. In 2019 , the K-pop community was shocked by the revelations from the Burning Sun Scandal . The case, involving BIGBANG’s Seungri , included crimes such as drug trafficking and prostitution. Fans are now calling Taeil the “second Seungri” due to the gravity of the allegations. Since Taeil's scandal surfaced, fans have been divided. Some are speculating that Taeil may be linked to the infamous Burning Sun chatroom , which implicated multiple high-profile idols. Although there is no concrete evidence yet, these theories are gaining attention. The 'Mama Guy' Controversy Earlier this year, another public figure, TikTok star Seo Won Jeong — also known as Mama Guy — faced similar allegations . Accused of sexual assault, his millions of followers were shocked, and his career is now in jeopardy, much like Taeil’s.
