- Why Sinsang-dong is the Best Place for Viral K-Beauty Products in Seoul! [Local Secret!]
If you’re planning a trip to South Korea and wondering where to shop for the best souvenirs and K-beauty products, you might skip Myeongdong and head to Sinsang-dong , Seoul 's latest hub for beauty shopping. This exclusive area is taking over as the new "cosmetic paradise" for foreign shoppers, offering prices much lower than in other popular shopping districts. Unlike traditional shopping hubs like Myeongdong, Sinsang-dong caters specifically to international tourists. The stores here are known to restrict entry to Korean shoppers, making it an exclusive destination for foreigners. Many products are available at a 30-50% discount, which is a dream come true for K-beauty lovers! Key Shopping Spots in Sinsang-dong One of the most recommended stores is The Mask Shop , a family-run business operated by Japanese owners. This shop offers deep discounts on skincare and cosmetics, but there are a few things to keep in mind before visiting: The store is located near Sindang Station (Line 2 or Line 6). It's a short walk from Exit 1 . Only cash is accepted here, so bring enough Korean won or Japanese yen . The staff primarily speaks Japanese , which could be challenging, but you can manage with a translation app. Perhaps the most unusual aspect of The Mask Shop is that it does not allow Korean locals inside! This creates an exclusive shopping environment for foreigners, making it a unique experience. Address: 251-55 Sindang-dong, Seoul 04569 Price Comparisons and Discounts It’s hard to miss the price differences between Sinsang-dong and popular cosmetic stores like Olive Young . Many viral products that dominate K-beauty trends are sold here at significant discounts. For example, Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen , a viral product both locally and internationally, is sold at a fraction of its regular price, making it a hot buy for tourists. Cult-favorite brands like Laneige, Banila Co, Mediheal, Innisfree, and CLIO are also offered at unbeatable prices. These kinds of deals make Sinsang-dong the cosmetic paradise of Seoul, perfect for beauty enthusiasts who are looking for great products at even better prices. Though Dongdaemun is traditionally known for wholesale shopping, it has also become a beauty destination where you can buy cosmetics, women’s clothing, toys, sports essentials, and even local snacks at discounted rates. Many Chinese and Japanese businesspeople visit these markets to buy in bulk, and you'll find plenty of money exchange centers and export offices here! Whether you’re on the hunt for viral K-beauty products or looking for the perfect souvenir, Sinsang-dong is a must-visit on your next trip to Seoul. The area offers unbeatable prices and exclusive shopping for foreigners, making it a true paradise for beauty lovers! - Cultural Appropriation: Why is it so common in Korea, and should it even happen?
From music and dramas to streetwear, cultural appropriation is very common in Korea. If you've ever traveled or lived in South Korea, you'll know what we mean. We discuss why this is the case and why it should ever happen. Cultural Appropriation: The use of elements from other cultures, such as hairstyles, fashion, or dance, by K-pop artists has been a point of contention. Debates have centered on where cultural appreciation crosses the line into appropriation, but we wonder: "Should it continue?" If we take a look at the music video of K-pop group EXID’s tenth-anniversary album title track “Fire” , which dropped in 2022, Hani’s box braid hairstyle was evidently blurred out, but why would someone go to this length or even approve the concept if it was not going to be shown? Their comeback announcement at the time of the video left fans counting down the days for the video to be released, however, once the teaser was shown, it created heaps of fury, and rightfully so. Many fans or viewers took to social media as viewers called out for cultural appropriation. As the box braided hairstyle is specific to the African-American community, using it carelessly in the music video has stirred such controversy. For me coming from the UK, there is a big diverse music culture from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean all showcasing different styles, images, and dance. However, in Korea, it's VERY rare to find this scene sadly. In response to the music video teaser and the backlash in comments from fans, the company decided to blur out her hair; however, there were mixed reactions to the company’s decision as some expressed approval while others deemed it unsatisfactory and I couldn't agree more with this. I think it is fine for K-pop idols to use or borrow ideas from a different culture, but it is extremely important to be respectful of it and use it appropriately. This only makes the videos more interesting and with many countries around the world especially in the West being multicultural what better way to integrate different cultures and bring them together? I also think that from an entertainment company, their view is more corporate and the thinking is that if they have a lot of negative reviews and less stream time then that will make them less profits, However, we are in the 21st century and the older more conservative generation of Koreans is starting to become questioned by the more outspoken more cultured younger Korean generation. This incident was not the first time Korean entertainment was criticized for cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation refers to the unrecognized or unfitting adoption of customs or ideas of one group or society by a member of another group or society that is oftentimes the majority. There are still ongoing debates regarding what determines the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Also with cancel culture becoming more common these days, I think big entertainment companies and artists need to be very careful about cultural appropriation. - Is Korea's beloved "No Brand" actually a "brand"?
One of Korea's beloved budget chains "No Brand" and "No Brand Burger" has been helping Koreans save money for a long time, but foreigners and Koreans alike are curious, is No Brand an actual "brand"? We find out! During my four years in Korea, I have been a regular customer of No Brand not only for the range of products that they, but also for the reasonable prices. This also extends to their fast food chain No Brand Burger which offers quick and easy lunches catering to both Korean and Western palates at an affordable price. So the question is, is "No Brand" really a brand? Well, in the UK and US, there are supermarket discounted lines. In the UK supermarket ASDA their budget line range is called "Smart Price", and in Korea, the big supermarket chain EMART has called their budget line "No Brand". Unlike in the UK, Korea's budget line has its own stand-alone stores throughout the country, which offers consumers convenience. The answer to the question is simply, "Yes"! No Brand, although it is a clever play on words, is a brand, which is very much loved throughout Korea! From my perspective I do recommend trying this brand if you are traveling or even living in Korea, as many of the products on sale in the No Brand supermarket are also made in the same factories as the ones that go on sale for more popular and higher prices brands, they are simply just packaged differently to attract a different budget/class of customer. In terms of their fast food chain, No Brand Burger , their slogan is "Why pay more? It's good enough" and I stand by this. Although their range is just a little cheaper than the Western food chains in Korea the quality tends to be better. This is because all of the orders are cooked fresh once they are ordered. This only adds to a great meal at a great price! My recommendation is that you try the double Cheese burger or their new seasonal burger "The Kimchi Burger" when you visit! Let us know if you have shopped at "No Brand" and if you think this chain is a brand or not! #Klife #burgerchain #NoBrand #Emart #smartconsumer #cheapeats
- "Kim's Convenience" takes over London's West End! Here's why it's already sold out!
Kim's Convenience , a Canadian sitcom that debuted in 2016 depicting a Korean Canadian family running a convenience store, has overtaken London's West End debuting as a live theater production! We will give you all the details on why this play has taken the UK by storm and why it has sold out! According to Park Theatre's head of ticketing, almost every performance in its more than four-week run is completely sold out, and Kim's Convenience is on track to be one of the best-selling shows in the venue's 11-year history! Kim's Convenience t ells the immigrant story of a Korean Canadian family and parents who want to displace themselves for the betterment of their family. In my opinion, since I'm from the UK, London is the best place for this immigrant comedy to take place, due to its rich history and diverse culture! Let's take a look at this teaser! With the first season airing in 2016, Kim's Convenience has become a comedy favorite for many. It tells the funny and heartfelt story of the Kim family, Mr. and Mrs. Kim. They are Korean Canadian convenience store owners who have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This single-camera comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal "Mom and Pop" shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own. Because of the diverse background that the UK has become, London is the best place for this performance as many people will be able to relate to the struggles that come with moving to a new country. For more information or to book tickets; https://parktheatre.co.uk/event/kims-convenience/ Performances run from September 5, 2024, to October 26, 2024. Check out the link above for more details! - Here’s Why K-Drama Fans Are Upset Over the Shocking Twist in "Love Next Door"! [Episode 8]
The K-drama Love Next Door has been one of the most anticipated series of 2024, winning over fans with its charming romantic-comedy narrative. However, the latest development in Episode 8 has left viewers disappointed and frustrated. What began as a lighthearted and fun show has now taken a heavy and dramatic turn, leading to widespread discussion and debate among fans. In Episode 8, fans were shocked to learn that the main character, Bae Seok Ryu, portrayed by Jung So-min ( Mu Deok, Alchemy of Souls , 2022) had secretly been dealing with Stage 3 stomach cancer during her time in the U.S. The revelation occurs after Seok Ryu suffers severe abdominal pain and is rushed to the hospital. There, she discloses to the doctor that she underwent surgery to remove 70% of her stomach, followed by chemotherapy. Although the surgery was successful, the cancer might relapse, leaving fans heartbroken over this dramatic shift. Fans quickly took to social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to express their disappointment with the terminal illness twist, which they feel has become a cliché in recent K-dramas. Many have compared Love Next Door to Queen of Tears , another 2024 drama that also featured a female lead suffering from a terminal illness, challenging the dynamics of the lead couple's relationship. This similarity has left viewers hoping Love Next Door won’t follow the same sad-happy ending. The introduction of this terminal illness plotline has sparked criticism from fans who believe that many 2024 K-dramas are recycling the same emotional twists. Viewers have voiced their frustration, noting that this type of plot has been overused in shows like Lovely Runner , where death and illness also played a central role despite the drama’s positive conclusion. Many are longing for the days of simpler yet emotionally powerful stories, like those seen in iconic dramas from the mid-2010s, such as Goblin and Descendants of the Sun . Fans can catch the next episodes of Love Next Door on tvN and Netflix at 9:20 PM KST for an international audience. Let’s see if the show will surprise us with an unexpected, refreshing twist or continue down its current melancholic path. What do you think about this shocking twist in the K-dramas? - Seoul is set to crack down on fast fashion online retailers SHEIN & TEMU products. Here are our thoughts.
Seoul authorities have found toxic substances in fast fashion online retailers Shein and Temu products, and have set out on a crackdown of importations. Here are the details and our thoughts. With many people moving to fast fashion as a cheaper and more convenient way to shop and show off the latest trends, this has caused big market players such as SHIEN and TEMU to throw out thousands of new designs for both men and women to buy. These latest fashion items are sold very cheaply, making them great for one-time wear. This, however, has caused many environmental concerns from protesters and even the consumers. Recently, it came to light that some of the w omen's accessories sold contained toxic substances, some of which included hundreds of times above acceptable levels, authorities in Seoul announced. To dive into more detail, shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates -- chemicals used to make plastics more flexible -- with one pair 229 times above the legal limit. "Phthalate-based plasticizers affect reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, and can cause infertility and even premature birth," an official from Seoul's environmental health team announced in an interview. One such chemical "is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Cancer Institute, so special care should be taken to avoid long-term contact with the human body", they added. Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in home building products, was detected. For me when I heard this news, I have to say that I was not surprised at all. Pushing out fast fashion, and with some of (if not all of the clothing lines) produced in terrible working conditions in third world countries where there are little to no 'health and safety' standards of course there will be an issue with leaked chemicals. Do I think this will put their consumers off of buying their products? No! I sadly do not think it will make a difference to them what so ever, which then leads to SHIEN and TEMU getting away with having no final standards or checks on their products. My family members and I, have purchased items from SHEIN before, and have been really impressed with the quality of the item, since the price was so low and the item arrived in a matter of days, unlike some of SHEINS competitors. For the Seoul authorities, I believe that destroying and removing these harmful items is the right thing to do, however, I really do not think it will be enough, and merely a dent in the ocean floor on this occasion. What do you think about toxic chemicals found in these retailer's products? Let us know in the comments below. #shien #TEMU #toxic #fastfashion

- [BREAKING] New CEO of HYBE Lee Jae Sang comments on the request by the NewJeans members! What happened??
BREAKING news, with the recent NewJeans plea for former HYBE CEO to be reinstated, the new HYBE CEO breaks silence. Let's get into the details! On the morning of September 12 KST, it was a bleak morning for HYBE members and stakeholders. Actually, this was the first extraordinary meeting of HYBE Labels shareholders in recent months following the outed former CEO Min . (See my previous article). On this day, Lee Jae Sang , previously Chief Strategy Officer, was officially appointed CEO of HYBE, taking over after Park Ji Won . After the HYBE signed band made an unannounced YouTube public plea, the newly appointment CEO, Lee Jae Sang, commented on the latest request made by the members of NewJeans, asking to have Min Hee Jin restored to her position as CEO of ADOR. Lee told reporters, "It will take some time, but we will stick to regulations and respond calmly. HYBE is a company which follows the rules and pursues precision management. Looking back, those who follow the rules always end up as the winners." We at Dojeon Media agree with this statement. It was not so long ago that NewJeans and other public figures were trying to get the CEO replaced. Their public pleas seemed very unprofessional and inexperienced. Some industry insiders understood Lee Jae Sang's comment to mean that HYBE Labels will not abide by the request of the NewJeans members, and will continue to separate management from creative production in the era of HYBE 2.0, which we believe will be a fresh era for the label. Although this statement was short and sweet, we hope that it has an impact and stops all of the drama that has erupted over what should have been a simple replacement of the CEO. Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below. #HYBE #newjeans #ADOR #minheejin #controversy
- [Did You Know?] KBS's Late-Night Music Show "The Seasons" Celebrates 30 Years of Global Popularity?!
Lee Young Ji becomes the new MC of The Seasons after Zico , continuing KBS's 30-year legacy of iconic late-night music talk shows. The musical night show, which became a cultural staple among Korea's locals in the 90s, is still enjoyed by the generation of the 21st century. For over 30 years, KBS has entertained all age groups with late-night musical shows after the day's hustle. The program began as a festival special show, but with continued love from the people, KBS has maintained this musical ritual for three decades. Let's look at the evolution of late-night music shows in Korea. KBS's History of Late-Night Music Shows KBS took the initiative of starting a midnight show that all age groups could enjoy. The only common subject here was music. In the 90s, Korea saw the rise of K-pop with idols like Uhm Jung Hwa and Seo Taiji & the Boys. The music was something enjoyed by everyone. This is how the KBS late-night music show was born! KBS first premiered the show in 1992 with Roh Young Sim as the host. The show's main theme was kept like a talk show, where musical artists would come to discuss their new releases or experiences and then answer some audience questions or musical requests. This late-night show soon became every Korean family’s favorite weekend show, which explains how KBS has been running the show for 30 years now! The Seasons seeks to continue the broadcaster's history of late-night music talk shows, following “Roh Young Sim’s Small Concert” (1992-94), “ Lee So-ra’s Propose ” (1996-2002), “Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter” (2002-08), “Lee Hana’s Peppermint” (2008-09), and “You Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook” (2009-22). Rapidly, this late-night music show also gained popularity among worldwide fans with the global rise of K-pop. Fans loved watching their favorite idols come on stage, sharing stories and performances that helped them forget the worries of the entire week. How did KBS come up with The Seasons ? In July, renowned singer-songwriter You Hee Yeol stepped down from You Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook , a Friday night fixture for more than a decade, after issuing multiple apologies over plagiarism claims regarding his 2021 track "A Very Private Night." This is when KBS introduced a fresh late-night musical show. The name of the show was decided to follow the MC's name as a new tradition. Just like the four seasons of the year, the show's theme is to bring a new MC every season. The first season was hosted by Jay Park , followed by Choi Jung Hoon, AKMU , Lee Hyori, and Zico, and finally, with the arrival of autumn, this season’s MC will be Lee Young Ji. Since 2022 The Seasons has enjoyed a wide number of viewership that proves KBS's right choice to continue the legacy of late-night music shows. Impact of Late-Night Musical Shows on Audiences Those who have watched the popular K-drama Reply 1988 probably know how, in the 1980s and 90s, there was usually one TV per family, and during weekends, the whole family would sit together for dinner, enjoying particular shows. These musical shows played an important role. They not only entertained families but kept them united too. Each episode would welcome musical artists from various generations, ensuring no age group was disappointed. Another interesting fact is that many couples or admirers used to send secret messages to these late-night shows, and the MC would play a song upon request, acting as a cupid or mentor. Lee Young Ji’s first episode of The Seasons will air on September 27 at 10 p.m. KST , marking the start of a brand-new season! As KBS's The Seasons continues to bring families and fans together through unforgettable musical moments. Do you have any fond memories of watching late-night musical shows with your loved ones? Share your stories with us—we’d love to hear from you! #LeeYoungJi #TheSeasons #KBS #talkshow #JayPark
