  • Why South Korean Shamanism Is So Popular in K-Dramas Again: The Cultural Comeback Explained!

Cho Yi-hyun performing a traditional shamanic dance in Head Over Heels  (Credits: Artist Company) Spiritual themes are taking centre stage in Korean entertainment, and one element that has been making waves is shamanism . In 2024 and 2025, many K-dramas and films are using this ancient tradition to tell fresh, emotional stories. Viewers in Korea and around the world are loving the mix of mystery, culture, and heart that comes with it. From Revenant  to Exhuma  to Head Over Heels : The Shamanic Revival The growing interest in shamanic themes started with dramas like Revenant , which showed what happens when angry spirits aren’t at peace. Then came the hit movie Exhuma , which sold over 10 million tickets in Korea. It followed young shamans who faced the scary consequences of disturbing a cursed grave. Viewers were hooked by the rituals and intense spiritual moments. Now in 2025, Head Over Heels  is trending everywhere. The drama tells the story of Seong-ah, a high school student who is also a shaman. She deals with ghosts, school stress, and her growing spiritual powers. The drama blends real-life struggles with the supernatural, and fans can’t stop talking about it. While many people follow Christianity or Buddhism , lots of others don’t follow any religion. Still, traditional beliefs like shamanism have remained, especially with older people. As modern life gets more stressful, young people are connecting more with stories about the spirit world. The colorful rituals, drumming, and chants add strong emotions and visual beauty. These stories help people feel comfort, healing, and even strength. That’s why so many viewers are drawn to them now. Historical painting of Korean shamans performing a gut ritual with musicians (Credits: Wikimedia Commons) Tradition Meets Modern Storytelling In the past, shamans were often shown as funny or strange side characters. But now, dramas treat them with respect. They are shown as powerful, emotional, and important to the story. This change has been building for years. Movies like Along with the Gods  and The Wailing  made room for more serious spiritual stories. Later, dramas like The Guest , Priest , and Black  gave us deeper looks at the battle between spirits and humans. New shows like The Haunted Palace  and Fortune Teller’s Love   continue this trend. What Makes Head Over Heels  Stand Out Head Over Heels  is different because it puts a young female shaman in the spotlight. Seong-ah isn’t just a helper—she’s the main character with her own story, fears, and goals. Actress Cho Yi-hyun even studied real shamanic rituals to bring her role to life. The drama also shows a new side of ghosts. Not all spirits are bad. Some are just sad or stuck because of past pain. This makes the story more emotional and deep, not just scary. That’s a big reason why fans are so attached to it. Cho Yi-hyun as Seong-ah, the young shaman in Head Over Heels  (Credits: tvN) The Future of Supernatural K-Content? Shaman-themed dramas are not going away anytime soon. Younger shamans are even gaining followers on social media, and big stars are joining these types of projects. Streaming sites like Netflix are helping these shows reach the world. Shamanism is no longer just a horror theme. It’s becoming a powerful way to tell stories about family, healing, and tradition. A modern-day shaman performing a gut ceremony at a temple in Korea (Credits: NPR) Final Thoughts Shaman stories in K-Dramas are more than just ghost tales. They are deep stories that connect the past with the present and show the power of belief and love. Are you enjoying this wave of spiritual K-Dramas? • Cate Blanchett’s Cameo Signals a Global "Squid Game" Universe—Here’s What We Know!

Cate Blanchett as Squid Game recruiter in Los Angeles alley final scene from Season 3 (Credits: Netflix) The Squid Game 3  finale has left fans stunned not only because of the intense final scenes but also due to a mysterious new face that has sparked endless discussion. The global hit, which started as a survival drama, may have now grown into something even bigger: a full Squid Game Universe. With the sudden appearance of Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and news of a US spin-off coming in 2026, the series is heading in a bold new direction. The Ending That Changed Everything In the final moments of Squid Game 3 , viewers were taken out of Korea. The camera moves to Los Angeles, where a new game seems to be starting. A man is approached with the same red-and-blue ddakji envelope, but this time it’s in English. And giving it to him is none other than Cate Blanchett, wearing a sharp suit that reminds fans of Gong Yoo’s original recruiter . While her appearance is short, it leaves a big impact. According to director Hwang Dong-hyuk , Blanchett finished her powerful scene in just one take. Her role wasn’t just added for fun. More importantly, her scene shows that the Games haven’t stopped; they’ve simply moved to a bigger stage. The system might have been challenged in Korea, but it still lives on across the world, beyond what one person can stop. As Hwang says, “I wrote that scene wanting an impactful ending for the show, not in order to open rooms for anything else” Cate Blanchett’s Cameo: Teasing the Future Blanchett’s surprise appearance is more than just a guest role. She’s not just there as a famous face; she’s shown as the new recruiter for the American version of the game. While Netflix has not officially confirmed a US spin-off, strong industry rumors suggest filming could begin in late 2025, with a possible release planned for winter 2026. The spin-off isn’t expected to be a simple remake. Instead, it may expand the story with a new setting, a fresh cast, and an entirely new set of deadly rules. What’s even more exciting is that David Fincher is said to be involved as the director, and Dennis Kelly, who is known for his work on Utopia , will be writing the script. This team suggests that the American version will have a darker and deeper tone, one that could easily match or even go beyond the intensity of the original show. Gi-hun’s powerful last moment leaves viewers emotional as Squid Game 3 ends (Credits: Netflix) Director’s Statement: Is This the End? In a recent interview, Hwang Dong-hyuk responded to fans asking about a possible Squid Game 4 . He confirmed that Season 3 brings an end to Gi-hun’s story, and there are no plans right now for another Korean season. But he also made it clear that the Squid Game Universe itself is not ending. “The system continues,” he said, hinting that the real focus now is on how the Games work around the world, not just through one character’s eyes. This means fans can look forward to more spin-offs, different versions from other countries, and possibly even stories that explore past characters and how the Game became what it is today. The Squid Game Universe is no longer just an idea—it is now moving forward in a real way. The official poster for Squid Game 3 (Credits: Netflix) Is Squid Game Turning Into a Cinematic Universe? A viral poster titled “Squid Game Cinematic Universe”  is making waves online. It shows a timeline of spin-offs like Squid Game: USA , 1987 , and 2.8th , planned from 2025 to 2028. Though Netflix hasn’t confirmed anything yet, the image has sparked fan buzz and speculation. Whether real or not, it shows the growing excitement for a global Squid Game franchise—and fans are ready for it. This viral fan poster imagines Squid Game as a global franchise, with spin-offs across countries and eras (Credits: X) A New Global Era for Squid Game With the US version already confirmed and interest growing across the world, Squid Game is becoming Netflix’s next major franchise. The ending of Season 3 , Cate Blanchett’s perfectly timed scene, and Netflix’s focus on making global versions all show a bigger plan. Much like how the Marvel universe was built one film at a time, Squid Game is now building something connected and wide-reaching, with stories crossing countries and languages. It’s not only about surviving anymore. It’s also about power, control, and how far people and viewers are willing to go. What Do You Think? Are you excited about the Squid Game US spin-off in 2026? Do you think Cate Blanchett was the right choice to lead the next chapter? Would you like to see more versions from other countries, or should the story go back to Gi-hun? • Korea, Japan, or Taiwan? Where Should Your Food Brand Launch First? 🇯🇵🇰🇷🇹🇼 Let Us Guide You!

"To know a people, begin with their food." — Lévi-Strauss Three markets. Three cultures. One big decision: Where should your food brand make its Asian debut.. Korea, Japan, or Taiwan? If you’re a food brand looking to make a powerful debut in Asia, choosing the right market could make or break your expansion. You’ve probably heard it before: “Asia is full of opportunity.” But let’s be clear, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan may be geographically close, yet they’re worlds apart when it comes to food trends, consumer behavior, and brand expectations. So… where should you start? After tuning into the Business France webinar “ Le marché des produits alimentaires au Japon, à Taïwan et en Corée du Sud ”, experts like Rosine DUTEIL, Loïc GAVET, and Anne GUINAUDEAU shared valuable insights into each market. Using their input as a starting point, we built on it with additional brand case studies, cultural context, and strategic takeaways, to highlight the key differences and help you choose your ideal market. One brand, one region.. but three very different paths. Which one is yours? 1- South Korea 🇰🇷 : - Inspired by insights from Rosine South Korea is a trend-driven, digitally native powerhouse. Ranked as the 12th largest economy globally, it’s a playground for food brands that can move quickly, look sharp, and tell a great story. "In the world of the fast, only the meaningful survives." — Yuval Noah Harari, Historian ☆ Why Korea Might Be Your Move: ● 44% food self-sufficiency → high demand for imported food. ● Big love for French bakery, dairy, chocolate, and fine groceries. ● Healthy, vegan, premium products are trending. ● The Free Trade Agreement between Korea and the EU (since 2011) makes it easier to export there. ☆ Where to Sell: ● Offline: General supermarkets (49%), specialty stores, convenience stores ● Online: E-commerce booming - especially for premium lifestyle brands ● Food service: Full-service restaurants dominate, but quick-service is growing ☆ Korea-Specific Edge: K-dramas, movies, and influencers have changed how people in Korea choose food. Today’s consumers care about more than just taste, they want food that looks good, feels special, and offers an experience. Things like storytelling, beautiful packaging, and health benefits aren’t extra anymore — they’re essential. If your product is Instagram-friendly, feels a bit luxurious, and connects to wellness or self-care... then Korea is the right market for you. ■ Something to Know : The Korean food market makes up over one-third of the country’s total retail sales. That’s huge. And even though it’s growing fast, it’s still open to new brands... especially ones that offer something original and different. Here are a few cases that highlight how global food brands managed (or struggled) to enter this competitive market : Examples of international brands that entered Korea successfully 2- Japan 🇯🇵 : - Inspired by insights from Loïc Japan is a big and high-end market, but very competitive. Quality, trust, and consistency are everything here. “People don’t buy products. They buy better versions of themselves.” — Seth Godin, Marketing Visionary ☆ What Makes Japan Unique: ● A huge, premium market where quality and trust rule. ● Shift from "gift-giving culture" to self-reward gourmet experiences. ● Increasing appetite for ready-to-eat, healthy, and luxury snacking. Today, people are buying less for gifts and more for personal enjoyment think gourmet snacks, healthy foods, and ready-to-eat meals. But success in Japan takes time and patience. ☆ Philosophy to Keep in Mind: The Japanese concept of “kaizen” (continuous improvement) means your product must evolve, refine, and be better every single time. ☆ Best Suited For: ● Brands ready to invest long-term, embrace perfectionism, and align with Japanese values of respect, consistency, and detail. Here are some examples of how they’ve approached this market with both challenges and successes : Examples of international brands that entered Japan successfully A human example: True Story: Mazen Al Khafaji, a Syrian refugee, opened a tiny Syrian kitchen in Tokyo. With authenticity, passion, and humility, he didn’t just serve meals! he built a cultural bridge. His story is a testament that in Japan, integrity and depth win over flashiness 3- Taiwan 🇹🇼 : - Inspired by insights from Anne Taiwan may be smaller, but it's incredibly open, expressive, and love creativity. Consumers here love products that are thoughtfully designed, emotionally engaging, and delightfully different. ☆ Why Taiwan Could Be Your Sweet Spot: ● Extremely receptive to French and international brands. ● Locals love beautiful packaging, emotional stories, DIY gift sets, and snacks that feel special. ● Smaller scale, but higher agility and innovation acceptance. ☆ Perfect for: ● Boutique brands, emotional storytelling, and products that surprise and delight with aesthetic and heart. ● Great for creative brands with strong storytelling and nice design. Here are some interesting examples related to Taiwan in the field of food and international entrepreneurs : Examples of international brands that entered Taiwan successfully Their stories reveal both the potential and the pitfalls of entering culturally diverse and demanding markets. Why Join the Food Experience Event? For international food brands interested in North-East Asia , the Food Experience Event is a powerful way to enter the market. Want to make a real impression in Asia? Then don’t just send samples. Be there. Connect. Watch reactions live. ☆ This professional event offers selected companies the chance to: Present their products to buyers in Korea , Japan , and Taiwan (especially for French brands) Organize tasting sessions directly with importers and distributors. Get real-time feedback on what works, what to adapt, and what’s trending. “Being adventurous with food opens up a world of possibilities and new experiences.” — By Adam Richman It reflects the same spirit: show up, taste, adapt and in doing so, earn your place in a multicultural culinary landscape Despite All Of That, Why Start Your Food Brand in Korea? Why Focus More on Korea? Because Korea doesn’t just follow global trends, it shares them with the world in its own unique way. When something becomes popular in Seoul , it often spreads fast to other countries . Thanks to K-pop , K-dramas , and social media , Korea has become a trendsetter worldwide. So when a foreign food brand succeeds in Korea, it doesn’t just get local fans, it also gets global attention. While Japan can be more closed or traditional, Korea is open, welcoming, and knows how to make things go big. If you want your brand to grow internationally, Korea is one of the best places to start. Final Thoughts: What’s Your Path? Three markets. Three cultures. But one big decision Choosing between Korea , Japan , and Taiwan isn’t just a business decision. It’s a choice about philosophy, identity, and vision. ● Are you a trend-led, storytelling brand? ➡️ Start with Korea. ● Are you building something timeless and refined? ➡️ Consider Japan. ● Are you artistic, bold, and emotionally expressive? ➡️ Explore Taiwan. 📊 Your Turn : (Vote in the poll or share your thoughts below) : What Do You Think? These two men are both carrying guns, but their reasons couldn’t be more different. Why Trigger  Feels So Real: Guns Are Practically Banned in Korea In South Korea, civilians can’t own guns. Period. Whether it's a pistol, rifle, or shotgun, it’s illegal unless you’re part of law enforcement or the military. Even airsoft and BB guns are heavily regulated. To own one, you need special permits, police approval, and strict storage. Getting caught with a gun can mean up to 10 years in prison, along with heavy fines. That’s how rare firearms are. While most Korean men undergo mandatory military service and train with weapons, once they return to civilian life, guns are completely off-limits. This makes Trigger  especially shocking for Korean audiences, where even seeing a gun outside of TV is rare. South Korean Military practicing with a rifle (Credits: FavBloger) Why Trigger  Isn’t Just Another Crime Drama If you're from a country like the U.S., where guns are a regular part of life, this story might seem familiar. But in Korea, this is new territory. Trigger  shows what happens when a peaceful, tightly controlled society is suddenly forced to deal with gun violence. That contrast, from no guns to too many, makes every single moment on screen feel more intense. Every shootout carries real emotional weight because it's not normal there. It's terrifying. Trigger Official Poster (Credits: Netflix) Why You Should Be Hyped It’s a rare concept that flips the usual K-drama formula. No romance tropes or K-pop idol cameos—just real tension. Because guns are so foreign in Korean life, every gunshot lands with shock and meaning. With two powerhouse leads like Kim Nam Gil and Kim Young Kwang, expect major emotional depth and moral conflict. When and Where to Watch Directed by Kwon Oh Seung, best known for the thriller Midnight , Trigger  is scheduled to release worldwide on Netflix on July 25, 2025 . Final Take Trigger  doesn’t just tell a crime story; it throws a peaceful society into crisis and forces it to confront something it was never meant to handle. Think Narcos , but in a place that was never supposed to need guns in the first place. For Korean viewers, it’s a chilling “what if.” For global viewers, it serves as a poignant reminder of how different and fragile peace can be. Would your community handle a sudden gun crisis any better? And does Korea’s real-life zero-gun culture make Trigger hit harder for you?  Let us know your thoughts below. #Trigger #KimNamGil #KimYoungKwang

  • South Korea Cloned the World's First Dog – Could K-Pop Idols Be Next?

With South Korea recently cloning the first dog, could K-pop idols be next? We dive deep into this hot topic! Image Suho and Irene - Kboo.com South Korea's scientific past saw a stem cell scientist clone a dog, a feat that once broke biological boundaries and sparked discussions beyond disease research. This pioneering achievement, while lauded for its potential in medicine, also ignited moral debates. Now, industry insiders are reportedly discussing the cloning of K-pop idols, leading to a surge of fan-fueled conspiracy theories! Let's take a look! Beyond the Breakthrough: The Ethical Implications of South Korean Dog Cloning The moral line crossed? With each new cloned creature, the chilling reality of human reproductive cloning edges closer. "It's increasingly clear: if we can clone this many mammals, humans are likely next," warns Dolly's creator, Ian Wilmut. As researchers tick off species – cats, goats, cows, and more – the failure to clone primates offers only a fragile pause before the unthinkable! What could happen if every animal were cloned or eventually a human? Is this morally right, or a bid for premature death and illness? K-pop idols are now on the cards, especially those with a reputable legacy! Breaking world records The first successful birth of a cloned dog Snuppy, an Afghan hound puppy, back in 2005, this news made it into the Book Of Guinness World Records . His name, Snuppy, is derived from Seoul National University puppy. The process involved fusing a donor egg cell with DNA taken from the ear of Tie, a three-year-old male Afghan hound. This embryo gestated for 60 days in a surrogate female golden Labrador before Snuppy was delivered via Caesarean section on April 25, 2005 . Snuppy reached his first birthday in 2006, which was celebrated globally around the world! Passing Away Although Snuppy had good life, and made way for scientific breakthroughs, the world felt a little less bright in May 2015, when Snuppy, the pioneering Afghan hound who bravely cemented his name in history as the first cloned dog to survive, finally succumbed to cancer at the age of ten. Though his existence was a testament to human ingenuity, his passing was a stark reminder of the delicate and precious nature of life itself, leaving behind a quiet ache for the unique spark he held. Ultimate fan dream So imagine your perfectly youthful preserved K-pop idol, is this the ultimate K-fan dream or a ethical nightmare? From canine clones to the world of K-pop, insiders and conspiracy theorists, have whispered about the idol replication starting to take place. This of course has sent K-pop fans worldwide into a frenzy, many of whom spark ethical concerns, as well as would a cloned idol truly capture the magic and soul of the former idol? Or would they just be a soulless copy? Final thoughts This intense discussion begs the question of whether cloning K-pop idols is the next frontier of entertainment or a dangerous step into uncharted territory, with fans already dreaming up wild theories about whether the next generation of K-pop could be manufactured, or if individuality will always reign supreme. We would love to hear your thoughts on this ethically concerning topic, for both animals and K-idols. What are your thoughts on cloning K-pop idols? • K-Pop's Next Evolution: VR Takes Fans Deeper Than Ever Before! Plus, Our SEVENTEEN M/V Experience!

Do you think VR experiences will become a standard part of K-pop fandom?! We give you our personal experience from SEVENTEEN's "Thunder" music video shoot! Let's take a closer look at the metaverse world! Image: Jennie, Lisa, Enhypen, XG - Photo: oust.france.kr K-pop fans, eat your heart out, as the virtual reality (VR) world is set to bring K-pop music videos alive, through incredible backdrops, immersive experiences for fans, as well as interactive fan experiences. Will VR transform K-pop forever? Seventeen's "Thunder" We previously wrote about the new music video from SEVENTEEN's "Thunder " , and they are no exception from using VR in their music videos, especially in the backdrop scenes. For their recent fifth studio album, HAPPY BURSTDAY , they dropped a 360-degree VR highlight medley . Fans can literally explore a virtual world with just a tilt of their phone, each scene perfectly matching a different track from the album. As Dojeon member Lewis Hooper worked on the set, he thought that the use of VR when it comes to the editing touches is remarkable, as it brings all of the creative ideas together in order to create some truly breathtaking content for viewers! 360-degree immersion VR is able to produce a 360 degree angle for fans to enjoy! This format allows fans to look around a virtual environment, just by moving their heads, as if they would during an actual concert. In some cases, this format is also possible by just dragging a mouse on platforms like YouTube, to enable the viewer to be in the music video as opposed to just watching it. Of course, beyond this, VR which is used in music videos will add interactive elements for fans, which can include being able to choose different camera angles, visual effects and in some cases being able to change aspects of the video narrative. All of these features are expected to keep fans interest in K-pop and help the industry grow! Live concerts Live concerts have also started using VR more often than ever before. Groups like aespa have previously experimented with VR concerts, and the feedback from fans was that it was like watching an ordinary concert through a new lens, without the chance for fans to actually interact with the stars. Fast forward to Cha Eun Woo's upcoming VR concert ( Cha Eun Woo VR Concert: Memories ) which will be released on June 18, 2025 , it promises to deliver a more engaging fan experience. With the ever evolving technology world, the enhancement of VR during live concerts, and music videos will only keep getting better. Do you think VR will pull fans into the action even more? Challenges In order to create high quality and interactive VR content for fans, music and production companies will need to invest in more expensive hardware, such as installing VR, is much more time consuming and complex than traditional music videos. The industry is still looking into effective ways to monetize VR music videos beyond initial sales or subscriptions, which will help their bottom line revenue go up, as well as potentially leading to up sales during the VR experience with add on features for viewers to purchase. Should VR be used in K-pop music videos?
