  • From BTS to Korean University: Indian Students Are Studying the Hallyu Way

"I got into BTS during lockdown. I just wanted to understand the lyrics better… now I'm doing a language course in Seoul", laughs Aanya Dhruv, a 22-year-old from Mumbai currently studying at Sogang University. This isn't a one-off story. BTS (Credits: HYBE Instagram) Across India, the ripple effect of K-pop is reaching beyond playlists and into passport stamps and university admission forms. From stanning K-pop idols to studying Korean, the journey is becoming surprisingly common. South Korea’s soft power, packaged through flawless choreo, K-dramas , mukbangs , and minimal skincare , is no longer just a mood. It's motivating Indian millennials and Gen-Z to pack their bags and actually go to Korea. According to statistics from the South Korean Ministry of Education, in 2022, there were approximately 1,328 Indian students enrolled in higher education in Korea, accounting for just 0.8% of Korea’s total international student body of around 166,892.  More recent reports suggest that the Indian student community might be larger: some organizations estimate 1,500 to 3,500 Indian students in Korea during the academic year.  Meanwhile, approximately 12,000 Indians are living in South Korea in total, of whom students comprise a small but growing fraction, as per The Times of India (Indian Media). What’s fueling K-Culture surge? K‑pop, K‑drama, Korean aesthetics. For many Indian millennials and Gen‑Z, idols are more than entertainers; they are entry points into wanting to learn the language, visit Korea, and understand the culture. Policy push and scholarship opportunities. Korea’s "Study Korea 300K Project" aims to attract 300,000 international students by 2027, with India clearly identified as a priority source.  Tourism and air connectivity. Indian travelers to Korea rose from 122,771 in 2023 to 176,668 in 2024, 44 % year‑on‑year growth as per India Today.  Indo-Utsav in Seoul on 15 August (Credits: The Print) According to Sarmistha Siddhacharjee, AME (Aeronautical Maintenance Engineer), “Random growth has not been significant, but some changes have been observed. Flights have resumed, and in the near future, there may be more opportunities". Flight List From India To South Korea (Credits: Air India) Challenges remain: language, cost, and visas. Yet, K-Culture is no longer just fandom; it’s a compass. From Seoul to Busan to Daegu , Indian students are chasing more than K-pop; they’re chasing futures. The Hallyu Wave isn’t just crossing oceans, it’s carrying them straight into Korea’s tomorrow. • Blackpink Fans React To Jennie's Outrageous Apology For Not Finishing Melbourne Concert

June 13 was not a happy day for BLACKPINK fans as Jennie apologized on her Instagram story for not being able to complete the group's recent Melbourne concert. Many fans reported seeing her as tired, with no energy, and looking "sickly" in many of her recent performances. We break down why we think Jennie's apology was outrageous. In a heartfelt message, Jennie wrote: "Melbourne Blinks, I'm so sorry I wasn't able to finish the show on Sunday. I'm doing my best to recover atm. Your understanding and support means the world to me. Thank you to everyone who came to our Melbourne show. Love you guys!" Fans voiced their concerns over the sudden exit off stage during the June 11 concert which caused the three remaining members to finish the act. Although her absence left many fans disappointed, many expressed words of support and encouragement on Twitter. "Finally!!!!! No need to apologize my baby. You need to prioritize yourself. Feel better soon!" "She doesn't need to apologize, we understand you my love, i hope you feel better soon, we miss you so much, get well soon our beloved, iloveyouuu!" "She and her agency should NOT be so greedy! She's got so much going on at the same time: World tour, Film, Fashion shows, etc. I mean, come on!" BLACKPINK is currently in the middle of a grueling "Born Pink" concert schedule which consists of 9 legs and 62 shows, many of which are back-to-back. The group is currently in France to do one show in Saint-Denis and will head off to North America for 5 more shows to finish the last leg of the concert schedule. Why was this outrageous? Many K-pop fans were outraged by why Jennie should have to apologize for her health. As a true professional, we feel that it was very kind of her to apologize to her fans for not showing up while many patiently waited and paid for their tickets. We also feel that she gave a great explanation to explain why she had to miss the performances, due to her lack of good health. Fans understood her reasons and appreciated her apology. What we feel is outrageous is the fact that K-pop idols are put in a position where their health is in jeopardy . With such a grueling concert schedule, it seems that Jennie has not had time to recover in between shows and traveling long distances. Alongside diet restrictions , it could add to the lack of energy shown during her performances. What do you think about K-pop idols and their health issues? What do you think entertainment companies should do? Let us know in the comments below and share this with people you know! #blackpinkinmelbourne #blackpinkinaustralia

  • The busking capital of South Korea, Hongdae & why it is a must-go on your Seoul trip!

For a long time now, Hongdae has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike when they visit Seoul. This article will focus on why Hongdae should be on your MUST-do list for places to visit in Seoul this year! What can I say, Hongdae is a cultural and culinary destination that is not to be missed on your trip to Seoul. Many Korean celebrities can also be spotted here occasionally, and the area has also been featured in many travel series, dramas, and music videos ! Hongdae has so much going for it, not only is it located in central Seoul, it has a variety of clubs, bars, restaurants, and street performances, not to mention the thrift stores and photoshops! Due to its foreigner-friendly atmosphere, Hongdae has not only attracted many international visitors, but also locals. I have visited the area countless times, especially when I lived in Seoul. For me, it is one of the places where you can get Western food, and there is a great Mexican restaurant, though if you are after something more local, then KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) and beer will be around on most streets! In the afternoon on weekends, and during the evenings, you will also notice lots of buskers and street performers playing to crowds, which for me makes the atmosphere feel alive! Located nearby are some of the major universities in Seoul, and as a result it offers a younger demographic. Regardless of your taste in music or food, there will be a place for you to go. I recently discovered a rooftop bar that boasted a large cocktail menu and offered a fantastic view of the city. If you are like me, and you like people watching, then you will be in for a treat! At the end of the night, it is obligatory to visit one of the areas many photo studios. For me this concept is strange as these days everybody has a smart phone. however the fun loving feel good concept is a great factor, and I think it's great to try on all of the different costumes and accessories and not to mention the price is cheap as well. There are many different studios in the area which all offer something slightly different. How to get here: Hongik Univ. Station (line 2, exit 9). Turn left at the road just in front of the station exit and walk straight. At the 2nd cross street, you will reach Hongdae Shopping Street (i.e. Eoulmadang-ro). 1 min walk. Hongik Univ. Station (AREX Airport Railroad / Gyeongui–Jungang Line, exit 7). Turn right upon the station exit and cross the street in front. The start of Hongdae Shopping Street (i.e. Eoulmadang-ro) is on your right. 20m. Let us know in the comments below if you have been or will be visiting Hongdae this year, and tag us in your photos! #hongdae #busking #Seoultrip #funthingstodo #seoulevents
