Image: Busan International Film Festival 2023 - Photo: Soompi If you are a fan of Korean films, or simply just films in general, then stepping into the Busan International Film Festival otherwise often referred to as BIFF is more than just a film lovers dream. This year it will be held between September 17th - 26th. This is also a global event, and the selection of films on offer is massive, with over 300 films from 75 different countries. There is something for everyone! With 99 of those being world premieres, you can be among the very first to see ground-breaking new films before they hit the global stage. Adding to the festival's prestige, the acclaimed American writer and filmmaker Oliver Stone is serving on the judging panel, bringing his legendary cinematic eye to help discover the next big thing in film, and you never know, you might be able to spot your favorite actor or actress at the same time. Buy your tickets online if you can With there being so much on offer to see and do, it is ideal to plan ahead if you can as it will enable you to find what movies you are interested in, and book them as as they are available as competition for times and slots is often fierce. Don’t forget, two tickets max! Th is is the golden rule! When you buy tickets in person at the event you are only allowed to buy two tickets at a time, so if you are in a big group you will need to have half the number of people in line to get all of the tickets. If not, ask the people behind you in line to buy the tickets for you. https://www.biff.kr/eng/html/schedule/date.asp?day1=6 Be on time! Most of the time, there are K-stars, International stars, directors, and even producers at the show! Often, they might give a speech or pose for a photo or two, so it is vital to be on time for the event and show! Even better, show up early (a good 10-15 minutes will do the trick) so you can have the best seat in town.) Give yourself some time This is one of the hottest events of the year, especially in Korean cinema , and most visitors to the event aim to watch as many events as possible, so just make sure to give yourself some breathing time between the shows, as the event is always very busy due to its increased popularity. The city of Busan is very spread out, so getting from one venue to the next may be tight. If you’re leaving less than 30 minutes between each movie, make sure you book movies at the same venue. Book your accommodations early The event is always popular, and with over 200,000 people attending the event it is not al ways easy to find a place to stay. As you can imagine, good accommodations will fill up quite quickly, especially in the Haeundae area . Make sure you book your room ahead of time so you have the best selection possible. • [EXCLUSIVE Interview] "Physical 100" Season 1 contestant Jeong Han Saem!

Physical 100 is coming back to our screens in March this year, and if you had as much fun watching the first series, you will be sure to tune in for the second season! We recently interviewed Jeong Han Saem who was a contestant on the Netflix show Physical 100 Season 1, to find out more about the show, as well as his successful career as a South Korean Actor & Model! Han Saem, tell me a few things about yourself. My name Han Saem, and I am 31 years old, however, you may know me by my stage name which is Jeong Han Saem , and I am a Korean actor and model, and I run a fitness center in Busan . You were a contestant on the latest Netflix show Physical 100 Season 1. What were the highlights of being on the show, and how did the role work? Many applicants wanted to appear on the show, and we were selected through several interviews. Actually. In the first team mission, "Moving Sand", I had organized the plan, as to how my team would compete in the challenge, and I had actually made the most important bridge as well in the game, as well as being confident and being able to run for a long time during the TOP20 game, but unfortunately, I was eliminated. Can you give me some insight into your workout routine with experience appearing on Netflix's Physical 100 Season 1? And what was the hardest part of the show? I think that the body function of every contestant had to be excellent as well as the balance being good, and of course, there were many national athletes and talented people who I was competing against, so, of course, I was worried at first. But once I had worked out the balance of using my strength and skills I learned how to play the game more effectively.  What do you think of Korea's entertainment industry compared to other countries?  I think that there are many interesting, cool, and pretty people in Korea, so I think it can be hard to succeed in the entertainment industry. However, if you are unique and have skills, then I believe that you will be successful someday, but the industry is good to work in and it faces challenges like most countries.  What made you want to enter the acting and modeling industry, and how did it happen? I liked to step up of the industry, and I used to get attention when I was young. After majoring in physical education, I started working as a fitness model first, and then I started to develop my dream of becoming an actor and model, from there I was lucky to appear on broadcasts. What skills are most valuable as an actor/model? For me, I would have to say that it's having a defined muscular body, which I always work hard to maintain, as well as having a powerful dance and acrobatic skills, and of course a good-looking charismatic face.   You performed on the TV Show Mr. Trot before, so could you share the details?   I was invited to audition for the show, and after doing so, I was chosen to sing in Mr.Trot. I sang trot with a body performance; I like to sing and with hard work, and I was able to appear on the show. You are a cast member and dancer of "Wild Wild". Can you tell us your role and what happened to it? Is there any difficulty? On the show Wild Wild I play the most important opening role, and then in each scene, I play an auxiliary role, who is also the main character of "Nanta's scene". It's a really good show, and of course it's a physical job, but I am having a great time! Han Saem in your career, what have been the highlights so far, and what have been the most challenging points? Right now, the highlight is working as an actor and model in my various roles as it always brings new opportunities, however, I plan to improve my skills and appear on other broadcasts to do various activities such as broadcasting and movies soon.  What can we expect from you in the near future? It's a secret, but I'm preparing for some broadcasting auditions, as well as preparing for a concert abroad.  Please can you say a few words for the readers at Dojeon Media? Thank you for your interest in me and your interview. I'll always show you my passionate growth. Please take good care of me. Let us know in the comments section who you would like us to interview! #physical100 #netflixactor #JeonHanSaem #koreanactor #interview #exclusiveinterview

  • Learn Korean From "The K2"!

Ji Chang Wook is one of the best Korean actors to date and his stellar acting in The K2 proves it! Romance is secondary in this drama but very addictive too! It may be the absolute worst romantic scene ever in a K-Drama or any drama. While the main romance is, at times, painful, the show is still fascinating, thanks to the two main leads (and I'm not talking about the annoying Snow White character An Na). Rather, K2 is all about Yoo Jin and Je Ha. It has a compelling storyline and leaves you hanging multiple times. I wasn't as impressed with the romance portion, but it wasn't necessary to enjoy this series! Today we're going to learn some new words and phrases from episodes 13 and 14! Scene 1 : Scene 2 : Scene 3 : After watching those three scenes, what did you learn? And do you know any of those sentences? And if you guys want to learn more Korean in another part of this drama please tell us in the comments! #thek2 #learnkorean #jichangwook

  • South Korea's global image isn't what Koreans think! We're here to debunk their image with a little reality!

According to a recent survey, South Korea's global image doesn't quite match what Korean's have in mind. This article will focus on why this is, and here at Dojeon Media, we want to learn why there is a gap between reality and image. How the world sees South Korea While many Koreans believe their country is known around the world for K-pop or K-dramas, what actually comes to mind for people from other countries when they think of Korea? Coming from the UK, I have to say nobody really spoke about Korea as a holiday destination, and if you were to ask a Brit what they thought of Korea, the likely answers would either be kimchi, North Korea, or Kim Jong Un. Of course, behind the bright lights of K-pop and K-dramas, South Korea is still under the North Korean nuclear threat, which unless it's discussed by new sanctions or Donald Trump, otherwise get's little attention. According to the survey conducted by the Corea Image Communication Institute, 83.96 percent of foreign respondents who have visited or resided in Korea said the security threat from North Korea is the first thing that comes to mind about Korea. I was surprised when I read this, as most people I speak to these days mention K-pop, kimchi , or K-dramas such as Squid Game . Koreans' image of themselves vary greatly than what the world sees In contrast to this, 84.75 percent of Korean respondents said Korea would be known for its culture powerhouse status. Only 30.19 percent of foreign respondents associated Korea with the image of a cultural powerhouse, which ranked third. I mean, Korea has very little natural resources due to it's mountainous landscape, so in order to gain a global appearance Korea really does need to play the K-culture card. These divided opinions show a significant gap between how Koreans view themselves and how the international community perceives them. This chart is from the USnews.com website where South Korea is compared in a number of aspects on a global scale from culture, manufacturing, consumer brands, happiness and trends in terms of influence; South Korea ranked number 7 (out of 89 countries) in terms of cultural influence which includes entertainment: The leading countries were Italy at number one, and France which came in second. The USA was number three, and the UK came in at number six for Cultural influence and entertainment. From our point of view This different mindset of how Korea as a country is viewed on the global stage is interesting and for me neither one is a correct answer. Since I have lived in Korea for 4 years, I have seen a change in the amount of people interested in Korea and whenever I return to the UK, there is a growing number of Korean products on UK supermarket shelves. I have also worked closely with the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to promote Korean culture, and I truly believe that if Korea get's this right in their marketing then they could overtake other holiday hot spot favorites such as Japan and Thailand in the future. In the meantime, I do think Koreans need to learn to become more open minded about other countries opinions of them, and also learn to be more culturally accepting and diverse like their neighboring countries have been, as this will only help them grow and develop. Let us know what you think Koreas global image is in the comments below. #SouthKorea #globalimage #hallyu #kentertainment

  • Overworked and constantly burnt out, we want to know: "Is the 'K-pop model' sustainable? We find out!

With fast turnaround times, a high burnout rate, and intense training that is possibly endangering K-pop idols' health, we at Dojeon Media want to know: "Is the K-pop model sustainable?" We break down some key elements in the "K-pop model" to see if K-pop is in it for the long run! Questions have arisen about the long-term viability of the current K-pop system, with its intense training, rapid debut cycles, and high burnout rates among idols. Discussions focus on the need for more sustainable practices. The more I have looked into K-pop during my time in Korea, and the longer I have worked in the entertainment industry, I have concluded that everything in K-pop is fast, and it has something to do with how oversaturated and competitive the market is. Fans have come to expect at least 2 comebacks per year from groups, not to mention all of the other schedules (variety shows, end-of-year performances, etc.) that the more popular groups have. I think the K-pop industry has created a system for its artists where burnout is inevitable (if you do it long enough and at the same pace with no significant breaks). Or sadly, you will just get replaced or forgotten about. Unless you reach a certain level of fame and can have some say over the pace of your schedule, I imagine it gets exhausting after 7 or so years (not even including time spent as a trainee ). I can't imagine the stress, especially for the more introverted idols. I feel so bad when there are statements saying they have to withdraw due to anxiety, but idols have to go back to performing and putting on a show and a positive front for the cameras. So can the K-pop industry be sustainable in the future? Let's take a look at some of the factors why I think that the K-pop industry is not sustainable in the future: Rigorous Training and Management: K-pop trainees undergo an extremely intensive training process, often for several years, before debuting as an idol. This training installs strong discipline, work ethic, and coping mechanisms to handle the intense demands of the idol lifestyle. K-pop entertainment companies also tend to have very regimented management systems to oversee and support their artists. For example, take a look at Ruka's (BAYBYMONSTER) 10-year journey from trainee to debut ! Tightly-Knit Team Dynamics: K-pop groups are typically comprised of multiple members who experience the idol lifestyle together. This provides a built-in support system and sense of camaraderie that can help idols cope with the pressures they face. The team dynamic is a core part of the K-pop model. However, most of the time this is just fronted and members in any band (worldwide) tend to have negative dynamics with other members. Protective Fanbase: K-pop fans, known as "fandoms" , tend to be extremely dedicated and protective of their idols. Idols receive a tremendous amount of emotional support and encouragement from their fanbase, which can help mitigate feelings of isolation and burnout. I feel like burnout in less than 10 years for artists who are at least semi-successful isn’t normal in the Western music industry (I can’t speak to other industries). I know that fans like to complain about mismanagement and lack of company promotion (Which I have written about in a previous article ), which is absolutely a factor in idols deciding to not renew contracts/leave the industry/focus on other career goals like acting, but I also feel like some of them are probably just tired of it all, and therefore I think with this current rate, the K-pop industry without significant changes can be sustainable in the future. Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below. #kpopmodel #kpopsustainability #kpopidolhealth #mentalhealth #overworked #kpopindustry
