  • Korea-Philippines Lantern Display Lights Up the Holiday Season

(Parol and Jinju Silk Lantern display at NCCA (left), and KCC (right) building) Celebrate the holidays with the luminous beauty of lanterns! As the country welcomes the most festive time of the year, the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) proudly present ‘ Light the Season: A Korea-Philippines Lantern Display ’, running from December 2, 2025 to January 6, 2026 at the façade and lobby of the NCCA building in Intramurals and at the ground floor of the KCC in Taguig. The display celebrates the Philippines’ iconic Christmas traditions through a vibrant display of parol and Jinju silk lanterns, highlighting the rich craftsmanship and cultural heritage shared by both countries. Bringing back the enchantment of the ‘Lights of Korea: Jinju Silk Lanterns’ exhibition, which ran from May to July this year at KCC, this showcase once again exhibits the exquisite artistry of lanterns crafted from fine Korean silk originating from Jinju in Gyeongsangnam-do Province . Each piece offers a captivating interplay of light, color, and tradition, embodying the timeless beauty of Korea’s lantern-making heritage. Complementing these are iconic Filipino parols - a cherished symbol of Christmas. Traditionally shaped like a star, the parol decorates homes, streets, and communities across the Philippines during the holiday season. Its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and handcrafted details reflect the festive warmth of the Filipino people. (‘Light the Season’ Lighting Ceremony) An opening ceremony was held last December 1 at the NCCA building lobby to officially illuminate the lantern display. KCC Director Kim Myeong-jin emphasized “Christmas holds significant meaning in the Philippines, and it is an honor to display Jinju silk lanterns with the Filipino symbol of Christmas, parol”. While NCCA Deputy Executive Director for Operations Bernan Joseph Corpuz shared “the idea of collaborating the Jinju silk lantern with parol now came to life, and it truly offers us a glimpse of continued partnership between Korea and the Philippines”. The ceremony was further enriched by a Pansori (Korean traditional singing) and Gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) performance featuring traditional Korean pieces as well as a Christmas song, setting a festive atmosphere. (Parol making workshop) In addition to the opening program, a special workshop was organized to deepen the appreciation of the lantern traditions of both countries. Participants attended an informative lecture about Jinju silk lanterns. They took part in a hands-on parol-making activity led by invited artist Harvey San Miguel, offering them a meaningful and creative way to experience the craft firsthand. Beyond their illuminating beauty, this first-ever pairing of Jinju silk lanterns with the Filipino parol tells a shared story - a story of creativity and the enduring friendship between Korea and the Philippines. The KCC and NCCA invite everyone to experience this display at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Building in Intramurals, Manila, from Mondays to Thursdays, 9 AM to 8 PM*, and at the Korean Cultural Center in Taguig City from Mondays to Saturdays, 9 AM to 4 PM. *NCCA lobby display runs from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, façade display runs from 5:45 PM to 8 PM Warmest wishes for a bright, joyful, and culturally enriching holiday season for all!

  • The Korean Hanbok: Timeless, and Ever-evolving. Can K-pop and K-dramas keep it alive?

When you think of Korea, what are some things that come to mind? K-pop, K-dramas, K-food? For us, the Hanbok is one of them. Though it has gone through moderations over time, its meaning has remained the same. Let's take a look at why this is, and what it means today! Hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) can be found in most tourist destinations in Seoul or throughout Korea. Yes, I have worn it before on a couple of occasions however it was only in a formal setting (tea ceremony) and for filming. I have been interested in Hanbok's history since I visited the History Museum in Seoul a year ago, and there was a display of Hanbok through time. For me, the more traditional Hanbok style was more impressive visually, and the modernized style which was introduced in the late 19th and 20th century, though it still had traditional aspects, I felt like it was trying to become more Western. Towards the end of the Three Kingdoms era, aristocratic women began to wear waist-length jackets and long, ankle-length skirts, while the noblemen wore loose pants, fitted at the ankles and long, belted tunics, however at the same time, silk robes became a thing, but only for the royals and their officials, which is where the Gwanbok (관복) originated from. The clothes worn by regular people were much more simple and less colorful though, as it was very expensive to produce such clothing. For me, I think the overall style of Hanbok reflects a calming and elegant feel, and since coming to Korea in 2020, I have primarily seen it being worn on special events or holidays, such as Seollal or Chuseok . However, I think the entertainment industry is keeping the style alive by adding the dress code into its dramas and music videos . Let's take a look at BLACKPINK's Jennie below, the brand that she is wearing in the photo is Daha, which is an eco-friendly brand that specializes in Korean traditional clothes. I think that she looks fabulous, and the intricate design keeps close to the more traditional Hanbok that has been worn for generations. So can K-idols keep Hanbok alive? Will Hanbok have a place for future generations? Have you ever tried wearing a Hanbok before? If you have, tag Dojeon Media in your photos on Instagram! #blackpink #jennie #hanbok #kculture #kfashion

  • Beautifully Digitally Reimagined Korean Cultural Heritage Art in the Philippines!

An Exhibition Celebrating 75 Years of Friendship between Korea and the Philippines. The National Museum of Korea (Director General: Yoon Sung Yong) is presenting Endless Landscape: Digitally Reimagined Korean Art at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (Director: Kim Myeongjin). This exhibition, featuring immersive video works using new digital technologies, will be held from Friday, January 19 through Saturday, June 29, 2024 . The First Achievement of the NMK’s Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program in the Philippines This exhibition is the first outcome in the Philippines of the National Museum of Korea’s Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program. To establish a foundation to broaden the reach of K-culture, the National Museum of Korea is promoting customized support programs to fit the local characteristics of different countries around the world. In the Philippines , the absence of Korean galleries or museums housing Korean cultural heritage makes it challenging for local audiences to experience traditional Korean cultural content. In this light, the exhibition takes a new approach to surmounting the constraints of hosting artifact-centered exhibitions of Korean art. By presenting immersive video works using the latest digital technology, the stories of cultural heritage can be conveyed vibrantly and engagingly. Moreover, this digital approach can be particularly effective given the deep interest in Korean pop culture, including K-pop and TV shows, among many Filipinos. Through a friendly and familiar digital medium, the exhibition is expected to enjoy a greater public response through this convergence of tradition and modernity. This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Philippines. Endless Landscape: Digitally Reimagined Korean Art  has been organized to commemorate the long-standing friendship between the two countries by expanding the reach of Korean cultural content in the Philippines and promoting mutual exchange. This exhibition kicks off a series of events celebrating this diplomatic anniversary at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, including a Korean Festival and K-drama OST Concert. The accompanying performances to the exhibition will diversify the exhibition’s local impact and visitor experience. In collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines (NCCA), the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines will organize monthly house concerts featuring Filipino artists. NCCA, the country’s official government agency for supporting culture, has provided active support to ensure the exhibition takes place successfully. In this way, the leading cultural institutions of Korea and the Philippines have come together to further strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. A Unique Exhibition of K-Culture Marked by an Intersection of the Past and Present The exhibition presents four video works using new digital technologies produced by the National Museum of Korea and the Chuncheon National Museum. The works – respectively entitled “Endless Mountains and Rivers,” “Royal Processions with the People,” “Pillars of Divinity, Chongseok Rocks,” and “Peonies in Bloom” – are reinterpretations of traditional Korean paintings. This exhibition is significant in that it offers a novel approach through digital content to engage with traditional Korean paintings, which are typically inaccessible without a visit to Korea. Upon entering the gallery, visitors are welcomed by an expansive panorama. Overflowing with light, sound, and brilliant colors, the exhibition space presents an intense sense of immersion.  The National Museum of Korea will continue to carry out further projects and overseas exhibitions as part of its Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program to ensure the preservation and utilization of Korean galleries and cultural heritage located abroad. It is hoped that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for closer engagement with Korean art and culture. The museum will strive to promote Korean culture and strengthen its status through diverse projects that encompass both traditional and contemporary contexts. #digitalart #koreanart #EndlessLandscape #KArt #KCCPhil #KoreanCulturePH

  • BTS Jungkook Makes History: From "ARIRANG" to the U.S. Classroom!

From the Global Stage to the Textbooks: How the "Golden Maknae" is redefining cultural education in America. So what does this really mean? BTS's Jungkook - https://au.pinterest.com BTS's Jungkook has done it again. This time, not for music, but for smashing into one of the biggest markets in the world: the U.S. This is a massive milestone for a Korean idol, and Jungkook has become the first K-pop artist to be featured in a U.S. educational textbook! Cultural Validation K-pop is no longer just viewed as a trend but more as a cultural movement. It validates how Korea is growing on a global scale, beyond music and dramas. This is a big deal, as it really demonstrates the impact of how K-culture has expanded from music into academic curricula, especially outside of Korea. Is this a new era for Korean soft power? Educational Representation Jungkook, through his influence and demand globally, is able to represent a vast audience. Jungkook is also able to reflect a classroom environment that values inclusivity and the real-world influences shaping the 21st century. This is something that comes up all too often in today's society. Most Gen Zs learn through digital and cultural lenses, as opposed to the more traditional textbook styles. This new way of learning makes "The Face of BTS" an essential case study in modern success and media influence. One of which already has a good standing in the U.S. and in other Western markets. Career Paths Brain Candy Books will detail Jungkook's journey from a young trainee in Busan to a record-breaking solo superstar, teaching children the value of a relentless work ethic and artistic dedication. This inspiration is one that will hopefully give hope to a new generation and a new style of learning. It will also highlight his solo achievements, such as his historic Billboard records and his 2022 FIFA World Cup performance, which the Dojeon Media team particularly loved. The "Brain Candy" Approach This book series is designed mainly for Grade 3 readers between the ages of 8 and 11 years old. The book aims to use "visual, punchy, and trendy" formats to build children's interest in what they are learning. The aim of using Jungkook is to include someone who is relatable to them while showcasing bite-sized facts about music, social media, and idol life. The Dojeon Media team thinks that this is a great way of learning, as it allows students to interact and learn fun facts at the same time. Bridging Cultural Gaps U.S. schools and the education system often represent non-Western cultures in perhaps a biased way. However, educational representation is taking a new turn. By allowing a Korean artist to showcase in U.S. elementary schools, it actually enables children to adapt to a new way of learning through early access to cross-cultural knowledge and collaboration. It also formalizes K-pop as a cultural pillar in the West, while at the same time encouraging students to explore global languages and diverse cultures outside of their daily norm. Why This Matters & Final Thoughts The Dojeon Media team is delighted to hear that a Korean superstar is breaking boundaries and entering U.S. classrooms. It will allow for a more diverse learning environment and, hopefully, at the same time, open up children's minds about other cultures by placing Jungkook in the same series as legendary athletes and Western pop stars. Will we notice more K-pop faces entering the U.S. classroom in the future? The Dojeon Media team certainly hopes so. #Jungkook #BTS #GoldenMaknae #KpopNews #GlobalIcon #CulturalImpact #EducationEvolution #KoreanWave #HistoryMaker #USCurriculum

  • BTS at the Mexican National Palace? The Truth Behind the Presidential Invitation!

From World Tours to World Leaders: Why the Mexican President Wants the K-Pop Kings at the Heart of the Government! BTS Welcomed By President Of Mexico - Yahoo.com Mexico City and the National Palace were packed with what was described by locals as unprecedented energy in the city. President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed the global icons, BTS, to the National Palace ahead of their sold-out shows in the country. This historic meeting marks a fusion of political diplomacy and pop culture, while at the same time celebrating the group’s ARIRANG world tour and their massive influence in Latin America in recent years. So what does this mean for ARMY, BTS, and Mexico? A Presidential Welcome A presidential welcome is a rare and special moment, which many artists and celebrities never get to experience. President Sheinbaum honored BTS as "distinguished visitors", presenting them with a commemorative plaque for their positive impact on youth in Mexico. During their meeting, she also praised the members of BTS for consistently delivering universal messages of friendship, peace, and diversity. These key and simple messages often get ignored by politicians, though with BTS's influence, people tend to listen to them more, especially the younger generation. During the meeting, leader RM and member V thrilled the audience by expressing their gratitude and love for Mexico in fluent Spanish! Mexican ARMY The response from the Mexican wing of ARMY was incredible. The Mexican ARMY has since described the atmosphere at Zócalo Square as 'electric', with some fans even shedding tears of joy and chanting in unison as the members appeared on the infamous balcony. Local social media has also been taken over with "Gracias" (Thank you) messages, as fans express immense pride and thanks in seeing their idols being recognised at the highest level of the Mexican government for their hard work and influence. The local army also organised massive "fanchants" that echoed through the surrounding streets, which local media described as unprecedented for a visiting foreign delegation. Local community BTS's tour stop in Mexico is estimated to bring in over $107 million USD to the local economy, which is astonishing for a foreign idol group. Their three-day sold-out concert really does provide more than just a one-night stop; it also brings hope and support for the local businesses and struggling local families. Mexico is the fifth-largest market for K-pop, with BTS dominating the streaming charts across the country once again! Final Thoughts The Dojeon Media team is also really impressed by how Mexican ARMY transformed the streets of the National Palace during the historic presidential meeting. This really does go to show how BTS are taking over their world with their music and influence and, at the same time, putting Korea on the global map. Could this bring a closer friendship between South Korea and Mexico? #BTS #BTSMexico #Diplomacy #KpopGlobal #CulturalExchange #BlueBloodBangtan
