Here at Dojeon Media, we have written about the scrutiny that many K-pop idols sadly face when they step out of the norm to pursue a new image or new challenge. But what happens when an idol dares to break the mold and be their authentic self? This is the powerful story of Cherry , a former trainee on the survival program Boys24 . Known to fans at the time as Chae Ryujin, a male idol, she has courageously transitioned and is now an influencer, sharing her life with the world. In this exclusive interview, Cherry opens up about her past, her journey of self-discovery, and what her truth means for the future of authenticity in the South Korean entertainment industry. Please introduce yourself to our readers. Hello, my name is Chae Ryujin . I debuted in Korea as part of a survival program and as a male idol. Now, after coming out as a transgender woman, I'm working as a YouTuber and influencer. What inspired you to get into K-pop? Ever since I was young, I admired K-pop, watching a group called B1A4. At that time, survival shows were trending in Korea, and I was lucky enough to be able to participate. What was your experience like on the reality show BOYS24 ? What led you to apply and join the show? I've always loved to sing and dance since I was a child, so I always wanted to be a K-pop idol. That's when I found this audition program and decided to participate. It was an amazing memory and experience. For three months, I lived like I was in the army with over 50 people, without my phone. It was a moment I'll never be able to repeat, but it was a time when I felt so desperate and learned and felt so many things. What were some of the most significant external challenges you faced in the K-pop world after coming out? Coming out is still almost taboo in the Korean entertainment industry . That's because many people in Korea still view coming out as if it were some kind of bad incident. How do you navigate both the positive and challenging fan reactions and public perceptions related to your identity? I don't want to force people to see me as a woman just because I'm living my life as one. Korea is still very conservative compared to other countries, and there's a lot of gender conflict. Amidst those individual lives and values, I think I'll be busy enough living my life with the people who support me. I don't feel the need to be recognized by or even care about people who hate me. What does "success" as a transgender person in the K-pop industry personally mean to you? It means being able to come out confidently without worrying about what people think, contributing to changing the perception of transgender people, and not losing my job. Can you share a moment or experience where you felt truly accepted or celebrated as a transgender person within the K-pop community? I'm not being covered much by Korean broadcasters yet, and they're mostly focusing on the term "cross-dressing". So, I'm just so grateful for the support and attention I'm getting from abroad. Beyond the personal, how do you hope your journey will impact LGBTQ+ inclusion in K-pop as a whole? Transgender people in Korea lose their jobs. Also, LGBTQ people are still openly hated deep within society. If I can set a good precedent in K-pop, I hope other junior artists or other people can feel a bit more positive and courageous about their lives. What specific changes or developments would you like to see in the future to make the K-pop industry more inclusive of transgender artists? In a situation where transgender people are almost taboo, I think a shift in societal perspective is needed first—one that doesn't treat transgender people as special, but as people like everyone else, as women. There are still many people in Korea who dismiss transgender people as monsters or mentally ill. I want to make society realize that we are just people living to find our true selves. I believe that's what will lead to real change and development. What message would you like to share with aspiring transgender artists who hope to break into the K-pop industry? I haven't achieved great success yet, but I'm receiving a lot of support and love from many people compared to the past. Don't forget that even though many people hate you, there are far more who support and love you. I hope you move forward by holding onto the loving gazes rather than the negative ones. What are your biggest hopes and aspirations for your career and your role as a K-pop artist moving forward? When being LGBTQ was taboo in Korea, an actor, comedian, and TV personality named Hong Seok Cheon was the first to come out publicly, and he had to go into hiding from the media. He had to endure even more terrible gazes and hatred than I do now. However, after persistently enduring and fighting, he now has his own show, and he's showing many people that being gay is friendly and nothing to be ashamed of. Watching him since I was young has given me a lot of inspiration and courage. The requirements may vary, but make sure to at least prepare these documents: Passport Visa Registration Card (ARC) Your address in Korean & English A Korean phone number - if you don't have one already, you can put your friend's You might also need to: Show a certificate of employment Show your university student certificate - if you are a student, ask your university before going to the bank, they might have a partnership for a special plan. Download the bank's mobile application (this is something that I would ask for help doing when you are at the bank) There is usually no fee or minimum balance required, but it's advisable to have some cash or a foreign card on hand, just in case. When I opened my first Korean account, they asked me to deposit around 50,000 KRW (USD 36.00) into my account as an initial payment. With a very small transfer limit at first, which I have increased over time. English-Speaking Staff at Korean Banks Yes, generally, Korean banks do have English speakers, especially in larger branches within major cities like Seoul or Busan. This means you'll likely be able to get information about bank accounts and services. However, if you're in a more remote area or a smaller branch, like I do in Daegu, the availability of English-speaking staff might be limited. It's possible that the only English speaker works on specific days, or in some cases, no one might be fluent in English. Even so, most Koreans will have at least a basic understanding of English, and you can always get by using translation apps for most services at the bank. Digital Certificate This is going to be the annoyance of your life in Korea, and you will need a digital certificate to do online transfers and online shopping, among other things. It is really important to get one when you create a bank account, and this digital file means that it identifies you so that you can send money out of your account. It is basically a n added security layer to make sure that no one steals money or takes your hard-earned cash. If you lose or misplace your digital certificate, call your bank and report it missing, just like if you lost your bank card or bank book. Some branches stay open later or are open on weekends, and all banks have ATMs. However, you might be surprised that many bank ATMs have hours of banking operations. Some are quite limited, too! Large banks usually have ATMs that are open until midnight, and some have 24-hour ATMs so you can access your bank account when it’s convenient for you. However, often, they lock the doors after a certain time and require your ATM card to open them. Also, most department stores have bank machines for you to withdraw or deposit cash. Getting Cash Abroad: Your ATM Card Guide If you’re using your ATM card from another country, look for “Global ATM” signs to withdraw your cash from your international bank account. It’s usually not a problem. I would strongly recommend speaking to your bank before travelling abroad, as some cards do charge higher fees, and your bank may offer a better alternative before you travel. Navigating International Currencies Abroad Dealing with foreign currency can be a bit tricky. Try to be familiar with the exchange rate your bank uses, it’s usually more favorable than the rate you’d get at currency exchange counters, but this isn’t always the case. It’s usually not as good as the market rate, but you might be pleasantly surprised. I have always used Hana Bank for exchanging money before I travel abroad, and you simply need to take your ID with you and they can exchange Korean won for foreign currency without any headaches, it is super simple and easy to do. Image: Driving School Seoul - Photo: drivingkorea.au Let's face it, learning to drive anywhere can be a daunting and challenging task, and learning to drive in a foreign country makes things even more daunting. That said, it is often a straightforward process, and with the right approach and attitude, it can be smooth sailing. Many foreigners have successfully obtained their Korean driver's license, and you can as well! Is the Driving Test in the UK Tough? If you haven't heard, the UK driving test is notorious for a simple reason, which is that only half of test takers pass. Yes, that's right. The UK driving test is the toughest in the world, and for me, when I learnt to drive at the age of 16, I was simply not in the right mindset, and despite taking on-road practical lessons, I was unable to pass the rigorous theory test. It's a brutal gauntlet starting with a two-part theory exam, including a mind-bending hazard perception test. Then comes the practical: navigating real-world roads, executing precise maneuvers. Then, when driving independently, all under the hawk-eye of an examiner, where even tiny slips mean instant failure. It's not just a test of driving, it's a battle of nerves and precision that I was simply not ready for. This led me to put off learning to drive for some years, 14 more years to be exact, as I never actually needed a car in my day-to-day life in the UK. Your Blueprint to a Korean License Fast forward to my time in Korea. After four years in Korea, I decided enough was enough, and it was finally time to get behind the wheel and learn to drive again. Generally, there are two main routes to getting your Korean driver's license, and the process is A WHOLE lot simpler than it is in the UK, not to mention it is also a fraction of the price. Step 1. Three-hour classroom theory. Before you do anything, I found a driving school. Since my Korean is not amazing, I registered at Anyang Driving School just outside of Seoul, as they offered the theory lesson and all driving lessons in English. Before I could even get behind the wheel, I had to attend a mandatory three-hour classroom theory session. This is not just a formality; it's a foundational step designed to ensure all prospective drivers understand the essential rules of the road and how to drive safely in Korea. Here, I learnt about road safety and also what the courses at my school would be like, with key details that I would need to remember for the testing system later on. Once I had completed the three-hour theory in the classroom, I was then able to go to a local Government driving center in order to take the dreaded theory test. Before I did this, I downloaded a practice app , which consisted of thousands of possible questions that I was able to practice. I opted to take the automatic test this time, as I had heard that it was easier, and also with the advancement of cars nowadays, I felt that it was better for me. Depending on whether you choose automatic or manual, the test will be slightly different for the on-road training later on, and also for the theory. This is where your knowledge of Korean traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices is formally assessed. The theory test is a computerized, multiple-choice exam consisting of 40 questions.  Fortunately for foreigners like me, it's available in several languages, including English, Chinese, and Vietnamese, removing a significant language barrier. You'll typically have an hour to complete the test, and most people finish well within that time. When I took the test, most of the questions were the ones that I had practiced that very morning, which I was thankful for, and I had mainly multiple-choice questions, with one video and 2 pictures. I PASSED first time, and I was so excited, I could not wait to get out of the office and start the next steps. Heading to Korea for a solo trip? Step 3. Driving Course Test (Skill Test) So this is the part that I thought looked straightforward; however, I was proven wrong and ended up having to take this part of the test twice. A score of 80% or higher is generally required to pass, and your driving school will give you a sheet with all of the deductions. Before taking the closed track test, I had four hours of lessons split up into one-hour or two-hour blocks. During the lesson time, we went through the different buttons in the car and how to operate the wipers, etc. , as well as practicing the course. This practical test takes place on a closed course at the examination office or your driving school, as it was in my case. It's designed to assess your fundamental driving abilities, including maneuvers like the "T-parking" (perpendicular parking), which was the part that I ended up failing on the first time, hill start, emergency stops, and using indicators. The test is often automated, with voice commands (available in English) guiding you, and a computer system scoring your performance. Precision is key, as even minor errors can lead to deductions. For me, I failed on the "T-parking" part, as the track is censored as well as timed, which meant that when I reversed back, I hit a small corner of the the sensor, and when I tried to rectify I also hit another sensor and then I timed out which took my score down to 70% and therefore I was unable to complete the rest of the test. This led me to re-book a further one-hour lesson and a test again the following week. This didn't get me down too much, as I was fully motivated to learn, and on my second test, I passed the course at 80% and I was happy with that. On-Road Driving Lessons and Exam For the on-road lessons, I was really not too nervous about this part, as I had experience driving on the road in the UK when I was learning to drive many years ago; however, Korean roads are very different, so I made sure to listen to my instructor very carefully. My driving school gave me a sheet again with the scoring, and the four routes that I would be practicing and need to memorize for my test. The road lessons were fine, and it was more of a case of learning the actual routes, as the test itself will only have verbal instructions from the computer, such as "in 600 meters, turn right". Image: Anyang Driving School Seoul - Photo: Lewis Hooper After taking six hours of on-road training, I bit the bullet and booked in for my on-road test. To say I was nervous would have been an understatement, and I felt sick the entire morning; however, I arrived at the center twenty minutes early and was able to take my test right away. Because there were four courses, A, B, C & D, the computer randomly selected a course for me to take from the database, and I was given the course that I wanted, which was course B. I wanted course B, because it was one of the slightly easier routes in my opinion, with fewer turns to memorize. In my car was the instructor and another girl who had just taken her test before me. The reason for this is that there used to be a lot of corruption in the past, and instructors passing students for bribes, so now there are always have to be three people. I didn't let that put me off, and I carried on with the test. I PASSED! 100% no mistakes! It only took around ten minutes, and that was it, signed and stamped, I was good to go! I was so happy! The school can send off for your driving license; however, as it was early in the day, I went to the Government office myself and signed a few forms with my pass certificate and paid the 15,000 KRW (USD 11.00) and was issued my Korean driving license in both Korean and English. The Time and Cost From day one of walking into the classroom to take the theory, all the way to being handed my driving license, it took me around three and a half months. I could have taken all the steps closer together; however, with my schedule, it wasn't possible, and I was really happy with this time. Compared to the UK, where the process would have cost around USD 4,000, it cost me around USD 750. Please, however, make sure that your country recognizes a Korean driving license when you return; thankfully, the UK does.
