  • Shocking South Korean Christmas Traditions Which Are Unique

Curious to know why Santa wears green, and couples claim the day? We unwrap the South Korean holiday phenomenon! Image: K-drama GOBLIN Christmas Scene - Photo: https://www.gmanetwork.com/ Every country around the world celebrates Christmas in a different way. In Asia, Christmas is a holiday that is not as widely celebrated as it is in the West. Korea celebrates Christmas in a very unique way! Let's check them out! Santa's Green Costume Twist First up is all about Santa! So, before Coca Cola changed the costume's color, to the red Santa Claus we know and love today, his costume traditionally was green, and this tradition continues in Korea today! Actually, Santa Claus is sometimes depicted wearing a green suit, and this variation, often called "Santa Haraboji" (Grandfather Santa), is a common sight in commercial decorations and media in Korea. He still brings gifts and cheer, but the slight color difference provides a unique, localized aesthetic to the classic figure, which we think is a great reflection on the past, while at the same time being open to embracing modern times. The Day for Couples, Not Just Family Koreans, unlike in the West, treat Christmas Day as a day for couples , more than a family event. This showcases a big cultural difference, and it's almost treated like a second Valentine's Day. After the big family holidays, which are focused on families' Chuseok and Seollal , this cultural focus is frequently mirrored in K-dramas, such as in Goblin , where the beautifully lit Christmas setting serves as the dramatic backdrop for pivotal and romantic, rather than familial, scenes. As a result, major city centers, theme parks, and restaurants become booked solid by dating pairs eager to celebrate the holiday with special outings and intimate exchanges. Really, this is a holiday to feel the essence of joy and celebration, in what is otherwise known as a "harsh winter". Christmas Cake, Not Turkey Forget the traditional turkey, which is served in the West during this time of year, and instead adapt to the cultural difference of having a light, elaborately decorated, fresh sponge Christmas cake . Although it might sound really weird at first, if you buy one from a local bakery (like Paris Baguette or Tous les Jours) as the central festive food item in your celebrations, it will not disappoint you. It is a unique, adopted East Asian Christmas tradition, contrasting strongly with the heavy fruitcakes, pies, or roasted meats (like turkey or ham) found in the West, and a little similar to the British Christmas pudding, which we all know and love. Focus on the City, Not the Home Last on our list is the focus in Korea when it comes to decorating the city, rather than the home! Unlike countries where Christmas centers on decorating a private home with trees, stockings, and mantel displays, as we do in the UK or the US, for example, the Korean celebration is much more focused on the public urban space. Koreans have been found to spend their money and time going out to enjoy the external festive environments , visiting decorated cafes, department stores, and entertainment venues, as well as town centers, and enjoying the moment together rather than just with their family . While small decorations are common, and can be found in supermarkets and store, the societal emphasis is on participating in the vibrant, dazzling holiday atmosphere outside their own doors, which the Dojeon team feel is more collective and celebrative. • Sokcho: A gateway to the North, and an unforgettable experience off the tourist trail!

Are you looking to have a different experience and off the beaten path during your stay in South Korea? Head to Sokcho in the northeastern region of South Korea this summer to find these unforgettable gems and experiences! Summer for me, means spending some time at the beach, and this year I wanted somewhere different to visit, rather than the stand-out Korean beach destinations such as Busan or Jeju Island, so instead I headed north, to the city of Sokcho. Despite being over a 4-hour drive from Daegu, there were many beautiful mountains and rest stops along the way! When I arrived at the main area of Sokcho, I was taken away by the incredible street art which lined the pier area floors, and the main tourist area! Scattered along the beach, there are many cafes and restaurants, and of course convenience stores! However, unlike in European beach resorts, there were no beach facing bars! That aside, there were many people and the queue at the parking lot took some time. It gave me a chance to take in the beautiful Sokcho Eye! (From the car) though, when I got closer it reminded me of London and the London Eye. I decided not to ride it, although there were plenty of people waiting, and I can imagine that the view would have been really good! Instead, I took a walk up the pier, to watch locals fishing and to take some photos of the spectacular street art, and beach area. To the right, there were people learning how to surf in the shallows, and to my left, were families having fun at the beach. For me, it seemed like a great local beach destination where not many foreign visitors venture, so it was perfect! No trip to the beach would be complete without a photo zone! The beaches for me felt much better than the more famous ones of Busan and Jeju, as the sand was soft, the water was very clear and not polluted and this allowed you to see many fish swimming around you when you got in! Because I visited in the summer, the sea was warm so it was perfect for swimming, and a perfect way to cool off from the heat outside. I will say, that the main beach area was crowded with families, so I decided to swim a little further down the beach where it was very quiet. A great thing for me about the trip was the street food! I mean who doesn't enjoy eating street food?! I opted for the octopus skewer, and I am glad I did! The flavor was AMAZING, and the owner of the stall said that it was caught earlier that day, which probably explains why the flavor was so good! If you don't like seafood, then there are still plenty of other options around for you to choose from! I stayed in Sokcho for two nights, and I it was the best decision that I made! I will be going back again sometime soon. I really suggest that if you are looking for an alternative to the packed jammed tourist beach destinations this year, that you should head and to Sokcho this year! How to get from Seoul to Sokcho? • The App Millions Are Using To Order “Fake Food” in South Korea

Why Gen Z is obsessed with 'FoodNeverComes'—the viral trend satisfying midnight cravings for $0. Korean fake away's - https://timzertravels.com/ South Korea is facing a wild new craze. This time, thanks to a mobile app that has left millions of users obsessed with ordering takeaway meals that don't actually exist. This new simulation app mimics the exact rush and feelings of buying food online, all the way through to the final confirmation payment page. So Why Are So Many People Using This App? The main idea behind the app is to trick the brain's reward center by allowing users to feel that mental stimulation without actually taking a financial hit or having to order the food. This app is trending throughout Korea right now, and it's all thanks to the stress-relieving aspects that the younger generation so often seeks. The fact that those late-night cravings don't actually have to turn into food arriving at your door is awesome. Where Are People Using This App? This slightly crazy idea actually comes from South Korea, thanks to the country's love for takeaway food and mobile apps. On many social media sites, fast-food and takeaway services promote themselves heavily, so this trend has taken off right away, mainly with city dwellers who face heavy daily pressures and are constantly looking for low-cost, quirky ways to find a bit of comfort. The viral app is called FoodNeverComes. It was actually created by an independent South Korean developer who goes by the handle Malhee (@malheeelife). How Does This App Work? Many people globally have been wondering how this type of app works. It is pretty simple, and the digital interface looks and feels almost identical to a real delivery app. It lets you scroll through menus, customize orders, and even watch fake drivers head your way via the built-in app. The only real difference is that instead of taking payment at the end, the system closes and displays a summary of the exact amount of money and calories you have just saved yourself from consuming. This is something that the Dojeon Media team finds really fascinating. The Psychological Impact and the Trend This is where things get interesting, as many entertainment and delivery app fans are swearing by this app. Some users have said that they have actually learned to become more disciplined, even going as far as saying that they have managed to keep their weekly budgets in check. Could this app be something that other brands consider in the future? The behavioural learning aspect is something that the Dojeon Media team supports, as many people these days struggle with burnout and loneliness. Since this app is trending right now, its behavioural design is intended to reflect how adults might spend their daily lives. Many of us fill up online shopping carts and, in recent years, have changed our consumption habits, but is this app a gimmick or really worth using? Do we order takeaways to save time, because we want something different to eat, or simply because we love the app's interface and get a kick out of ordering something? Final Thoughts For the Dojeon Media team, this new craze in Korea really highlights how much our brains crave the simple comfort and routine of making a purchase. It also offers a truly unique, modern perspective on self-control, proving that sometimes just going through the motions is enough to satisfy an itch. Have you tried using this app? If so, we would love to hear from you in the comments below! #SouthKorea #FoodNeverComes #DopamineSites #GenZTrends #SmartBudgeting #MindfulConsuming
