- Exploring BTS's Mesmerizing Hanbok-Inspired Looks at Gwanghwamun Live Performance
From Joseon warriors to modern icons— we take a look at how these custom designs transformed Gwanghwamun Square into a cultural masterpiece! BTS’s Gwanghwamun Hanbok Suits! (Credits: Bighit Music) BTS dominated Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul by wearing reimagined hanbok that stunned the world, including global ARMY. In a historic fusion of tradition and modernity, these custom-made hanboks were a purpose statement of Korean pride and craftsmanship with their comeback performance and promotion of their new album ARIRANG . What Happened BTS performing at the Gwanghwamun Comeback Live concert (Credits: Joint Press Corps) During the group's comeback show in central Seoul, their historic comeback performance also came with a blend of high fashion. The showstopper reimagined hanboks were tailored by designer Baek Oak Kim . Their hanboks blended traditional fabrics and silhouettes while at the same time adding more contemporary Western elements. This blend really did allow for high-intensity choreography during every moment of the show. The Meaning Behind Their Looks The beautifully designed hanboks were made with handwoven Korean cotton and linen, featuring intercut textures that mimicked the brushstrokes of traditional backdrops and famous Korean paintings. BTS's Jimin at the Gwanghwamun Comeback Live Concert (Credits: Star News Korea) Each member of BTS wore a unique hanbok, which told a different story. RM was the hero, Jin was the artist, Jimin was the poet, Suga was the architect, Jungkook was the pioneer, J-Hope was a sorikkun (traditional singer), and V was a doryeongwas (noble scholar). These individual elements told the world the traditional stories of Korea. BTS's V at the Gwanghwamun Comeback Live Concert (Credits: OSEN) The designer had hoped that this bold move would help the members transition back into K-pop megastars while at the same time representing Korea to the world. At the same time, performing on the historic King's Path in central Seoul, which few K-pop artists have ever done. The "Lyrical Armor" concept resonated with ARMY as a physical representation of the strength and resilience the group developed during their time together. Army Reaction Global ARMY took to social media to talk about these stunning outfits. Social media was flooded with some fans posting about how meticulous the traditional patterns were on their hanboks. Global ARMY was also joined by new members who showed a new or renewed interest in BTS and Korean garments, thanks to the show. What This Could Mean This really was a moment of traditional heritage at its most powerful. Korea is in a good place when it comes to using its soft power to influence foreign markets, and this moment really did signal a shift where heritage and modern pop work as one. The Dojeon team believes that it was the right choice to choose a domestic designer over international designers for their comeback outfits. This move signalled the K-culture, which global audiences are welcoming in, and at the same time drew the world to Korea. This really has set a new level for K-pop acts. For some, this moment also suggested that the future of K-pop will continue to grow deeper roots and embed Korean identity and values into K-pop hits, both inside and abroad. Final Thoughts For the team at Dojeon Media, BTS really has shown the world that you do not have to choose between the past and the present. You can, in fact, incorporate both! These high-fashion Gwanghwamun showstopper hanboks really are a definitive blueprint for cultural storytelling through fashion. What are your thoughts on BTS's comeback costumes?
