For decades Banpo Bridge in the heart of Seoul has been a popular place to watch the sunset down on the Han River , and here is why you should make it a must-do when you visit Seoul! Banpo Bridge is a very famous K-drama location! Recently, I visited Banpo Park with my family when they were visiting and I have to say I was taken away by the amount of people there, as well as the sunset and photo opportunities! Whenever I get time in Seoul this park is a must-go on my list of things to do, and it should be for you too! There are plenty of parks along the Han River where you can watch the spectacular sunset, however, this Han River park offers something very unique, which of course is the nightly Rainbow fountain. Once the sun set's the water fall flows over the side of the bridge and with the spot lights it creates a sensational rainbow effect which of course is perfect for the memory bank and photo album! Plenty of people head down to the park for a picnic, and you can also purchase food and drink at the continence store, and sometimes locals come around selling pizza and chicken depending on what you want! I think it's not only peaceful but also romantic and imaginative. With the universe so big, do we really know what's out there? Sadly, as most of us live in a city these days it can be really hard to see the stars in the sky at night, so where can you see the stars in South Korea? I was fortunate to see the stars in the sky when I visited a small town off the beaten track in Gangwon province , the town was called Inje. Here I took part in a stargazing class, and we also used telescopes and looked at different patterns with the stars, and their meaning, and found out the estimated distances! Since then, I have really wanted to see the night sky again, but I have not had the chance. Aside from Inje, an administrative region, Anbandegi is part of the eastern city of Gangneung , which is close to the Olympic town of Pyeongchang . As you travel beyond the vicinity of Yongpyong Resort (which is popular for winter sports), the road narrows from two lanes in either direction and becomes a real rural road, without a streetlight to be found. Sounds perfect right? Photo: Taebaek Mountains - Korea - Images Located on a rugged ridge of the Taebaek Mountains at an altitude of 1,100 meters, this area is like one big cabbage field. The name “Anbandegi” comes from a combination of the local Gangneung terms “anban,” referring to a broad, concave wooden board used for pounding rice cakes, and “degi,” meaning flat ground. This place has been said to be one of the best spots in the country for stargazing. The best times to look at the Milky Way are roughly between April and September. The rainy season from late June to July is not good viewing weather, so those who’d like to camp under the stars are advised to plan for a visit either between early April and mid-June or between August and September, so if you go outside of this time it will be perfect for looking at the night sky. I really love escaping to the countryside as I feel it is good to connect with nature and experience things for free or a cheap price, depending on where you go and how long you stay. Of course, depending on how long you come to Korea it may not be possible to head out of the big cities, however, I really recommend it for a more real experience. Are young Koreans falling out of love with Jeju Island ? This is the question that many people are asking after a dramatic fall in visitor numbers this summer. Let's find out why this is the case! Photo: Jeju International Airport - images. The summer of 2024 has seen a big drop in tourist numbers heading to the Korean Island of Jeju. There are several reasons for this, however in my opinion a big factor is that the Japanese Yen has fallen, which makes it more attractive for Koreans to travel to Japan than Jeju, since the cost of living is significantly cheaper in Japan at the moment. This has however impacted many of Jeju's hotels, bars and restaurants forcing them to close or put their prices up, which in turn, puts people off of going to those establishments. In turn, this has had a devastating effect on the economy. This is not the first time Jeju has experienced a drop in numbers, as COVID-19 suspended all but essential travel, though local governments were hoping to get back to pre-pandemic numbers. Jeju's majestic Seongsan Ilchulbong or "Sunrise Peak" volcano (Wikipedia) For me, I have to say that although the island is beautiful and the beaches are stunning, the prices sadly are expensive. I have been to the island a couple of times, and I was imagining that it would be like Tenerife or Lanzarote, however, the nighlife was non-existent and you needed a car to drive around the island with little to no public transportation. There has been a surge in the number of foreign visitors to Jeju. But they tend to stay at big hotels, many of which have business deals with travel agencies that bring them to the island through their package programs therefore staying in the resort means little to no time or desire to spend money in local businesses. For young Koreans, the ability and appeal to travel to a foreign country outside of Korea, to experience a new culture and customs is more desirable. The flights though more expensive than going to Jeju, are a competitive price and once at the destination the living cost and hotel costs are cheaper. I have also looked at heading to Jeju this year and the drawback for me along with many young Koreans is the living cost is higher in Jeju than in mainland Korea. In addition, the amount of low-cost flights to international destinations are more appealing in comparison. For overseas visitors, Jeju does offer visa-free travel for many countries, which otherwise require a visa before traveling to the mainland such as India, so it still offers an attractive place to visit with fewer restrictions and at the same time still being able to offer an authentic Korean experience. South Korea is filled with beautiful cultural artifacts and locations. Just an hour away from Seoul, is Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress . We give you our reasons why this K-drama location is a must-visit next time you're in the area! Photo: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress - Lewis Hooper Suwon is a small city outside of Seoul, though it is connected by the subway line right to central Seoul, and it takes around 1 hour. This should be reason enough for you to head to Hwaseong Fortress this fall! Whenever I visit a new country, I love to experience the culture, history, and smaller cities. This helps me to gain a better understanding of the country, people, and of course, mindset. Hwaseong Fortress's crazy story! T he true story behind the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress could be the plot for a period K-drama. I’ll try to keep it short for this post, but if you want to read more about the history and all the juicy details of affairs, illegitimate children, violence, and literal madness, there’s tons of information out there, and boy is it interesting! In short, during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty , there was a king by the name of King Yeongjo. He had a son, Prince Sado, who was heir to the throne and held up to his father’s high expectations. It seemed that no matter what Prince Sado did, he could never please his father. His father reprimanded him publicly and refused to let him visit the ancestral graves of people who died, whom the Prince was close to. Prince Sado’s mental health deteriorated over the years and he became increasingly violent. He would have outbursts of rage, violently rape women, and beat his servants, wife, and consort. It is recorded that he beat his secondary consort so badly that she was left to die on the floor. This photogenic fortress is one of the origins, where Prince Sado started to become mentally ill, from the age of 10 where he started to experience delusions and nightmares while staying in the fortress. Were these due to his fathers mistreatment and ridicule? Or were these due to the fortress itself? The best way to see the fortress is by walking along the walls. There is plenty of signage along the walls so you can learn more about what you are seeing. It also offers views of the city. We recommend taking a few hours to walk along the walls. We didn’t walk the entire length, but instead went from Paldalmun Gate to Hwahongmun Gate and were able to enjoy, learn a lot, and see some of the key highlights of the fortress. To reach the walls, you’ll have to walk up a steep incline of stairs to reach the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Seonam Ammun Gate . If someone is at the ticket booth, you might have to pay 1,000 KRW for adults, but a person isn’t always there. You may see other checkpoints along the way where you will have to pay and worth the price! Hwaseong Fortress in K-dramas! Recognizable in the hit series Twenty-five Twenty-One (2022), it is one of the pivotal filming locations for the story! The specific location of the location is the Southern Artillery Pavilion . There really is something for everyone! So what is the vibe like for solo travelers? South Korea is a fairly small nation, and therefore it has great high speed connections by bus and train. There are plenty of homestays and reasonably priced hotels to solo budgets, and while English is not always spoken, people here are helpful and welcoming. In Seoul and other major cities like Busan and Daegu the subway connections and buses are efficient, inexpensive and clean, not to mention safe. Among the quirkier options is budae-jjigae , or “army stew”, a mashup of Korean and American ingredients including Spam, baked beans, kimchi and instant noodles. You’ll either love it or hate it, either way it is something to try on your travels. Convenience stores also offer cheap options for solo travelers, and I have to say that the quality is very good. Inside the the stores you can find microwaves, ramen machines to heat your food, and many locals often eat here. Staying safe and local Google Maps is ineffective, especially when trying to plan routes. Instead, try Citymapper or the local app Naver . Seoul is a spread-out city and, while the subway network is good, stations can be far apart – minimize your travel time by basing yourself near a well-connected hub. How long should I spend in South Korea? It is possible to do South Korea in as little as a week, though you will find yourself not having time to really take in the beauty and culture in that time. However, with ten to fourteen days, you will be "wowed", from the electrifying buzz in the historic yet modern capital, and the beautiful peaceful coastal regions. Start your trip in Seoul, and immerse yourself in shopping, karaoke, various dining options, and of course, the epic royal palaces, before heading outside of the capital. The event brought young learners on a shared journey through the vibrant stories of both nations, igniting their imaginations and deepening their appreciation of each other’s cultures.
