- Copyrighted: NewJeans perform under their own names in latest concert!
During their latest concert K-pop group NewJeans performed under their own names, rather than their band name, to avoid their contract dispute. This is what happened! 2024 has been a historic year for K-pop girl group NewJeans, as well as their record label ADOR/HYBE , and all for the wrong reasons. Recently, NewJeans held a press conference where they confirmed that their contract with their label HYBE would become terminated due to conflicted interests and HYBE breaking the agreement, but was this all a ploy for the public to join their side? During the bands YOASOBI appearance at Incheon Inspire Arena on December 7th 2024, the group introduced themselves using their own individual names, rather than mentioning the name NewJeans. This did not go unnoticed, and therefore drew the attention of audience members, and fans through social media. So where do we go from here? During their appearance, some fans described the girls' performance as an 'unusual atmosphere' due to their band logo being stripped from the stage visuals. Although YOASOBI mentioned NewJeans briefly during their concert, during the introduction the group did not make any acknowledgment themselves, and why would they? If they did, since there is an ongoing legal battle between themselves and HYBE, it would be a big breach of contract, and sadly go against their interest, since effectively HYBE owns the rights to the band and the copyright of the NewJeans brand and name. Many organizations that are involved directly with the ongoing dispute have urged NewJeans members to withdraw their dispute against record giant HYBE, but can you see the girls following the pressure to withdraw? Check out our related articles about NewJeans terminating their contracts with HYBE: https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/newjeans-should-they-really-terminate-their-contracts https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/breaking-news-goodbye-newjeans-heartfelt-message-as-they-leave-ador Let us know what you think of the on-going NewJeans scandal in the comments below. #NewJeans #kpop #ador #hybe #kgirlgroup

2024 was a year full of K-pop scandals that often had fans scratching their heads thinking, "What were they thinking?". We cover our top 5 K-pop scandals that broke the internet this year! Suga's DUI scandal This had to top number one, for all of the wrong reasons. As we expressed at Dojeon Media several times, the star really should have been careful while riding a scooter through central Seoul. He could have afforded to take a taxi or limousine home with his wealth. Back on the night of August 6, 2024, Suga fell outside the Nine One Hannam Luxury complex from riding an electric scooter after a heavy night of drinking. He was later arrested and booked for exceeding the blood alcohol limit. Thankfully no one was injured, but this led to protests outside of his label, calling for them to terminate his contract, and the case will soon be forwarded to prosecutors. What was he thinking? You can read more details here . Min Hee Jin vs. HYBE A power trip, if we have ever heard one. Hitting back and trying to gain a lot of media attention, Min Hee Jin has been no stranger to controversial Korean media this year. Having stepped down as CEO of subsidiary label ADOR , let's say through a power struggle, she had been trying to become a separate entity at the same time. This led to NewJeans also resigning and following in her footsteps. After a very public media battle, Min Hee Jin decided not to pursue her reinstatement with the label anymore, and instead start her venture, which we are all looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Former NCT Member Taeil's Sex Crime August 28th, made headlines for NCT member Taeil as SM Entertainment announced that he had been removed from the group due to being under investigation for a sex crime , and in this case, it was towards a woman. He has been under investigation since June 2024. The member joined the band back in 2016. BLACKPINK, RED VELVET These K-pop mega names have been caught in plagiarism scandals and nothing gets passed their fans. This is mainly for copying someone else's work, or having similar stage designs, to other K-pop stars. These incidents have sparked outrage in online communities where fans have become detectives in a bid to uncover the truth. In the case of BLACKPINK's debut, controversy swept, over their music video "Whistle" . This was because it had strong comparisons to Red Velvet's "One Of These Nights" music video, from scenes of members in the car and also when they were gathered around the table. Seventeen's Seungkwan speaking out about the toxic industry Seungkwan spoke out about the toxic K-pop industry, however fans did not always want to hear about it. For those who are knee deep in the industry, there is a sense of contentment and those who are aspiring but perhaps not doing as well, feel that they are just a part in the machine. Since the K-pop industry is known for turning around artists in a harsh inhumane way. In his public Instagram post, he stood with NewJeans on their position against HYBE, which was similar to BTS Jungook's placement in solidarity, against using sub labels and putting up with the mistreatment of their staff. This heartfelt message was very controversial at the time, and it called some employers such as SM, YG, and HYBE as bullies which hurled insults at idols on a daily basis. Did anything ever come of this? Unfortunately not, since labels have so much power and influence over hungry and eager stars are so replaceable. 2024 was a year full of controversial K-pop stories 2024 really has had some interesting and controversial news stories, which has kept the entertainment industry alive. Without these stories many stars would not have as much of a following, and the tabloids would just focus on all the bad that happens in the world. - South Korea's Martial Law throws K-entertainment into disarray! What happened??
With the unexpected events that unfolded and took Korea and the world by surprise on November 3, 2024, the Korean entertainment industry faced massive disruption following President Yoon Suk Yeol's shocking announcement. We uncover how this event took a toll on the country's leading soft export! What happened? (Simplified) The marshal law and government takeover in a chance to cease power, was short-lived at six hours, however during that time and since the event it has caused a lot of uncertainties within the entertainment industry. Marshall law depending on the degree, can take control of all media outlets within the country if needed, and as a result of the late-night notice from the President, it caused global outrage, and confusion as well as at home for many Koreans. K-industry in a state of confusion: Following the announcement singer Lee Seung Hwan cancelled his concert, however, once the decision was revoked, the singer announced that the event would proceed as scheduled. Seo Hyun Jin also was set for a morning interview on December 4, 2024, which was cancelled at that time. A public relations agency revealed, “Seo Hyun Jin’s interview has been cancelled, and the interviews with Gong Yoo and Jung Yoon Ha scheduled for December 5th and 6th are currently under discussion.” The quote above reads: "As martial law is lifted, 'Like a Black and White Movie' will proceed as scheduled. I'm sorry for the confusion." — Dream Factory Club CEO Lee Seung Hwan O n the other hand, director Yang Woo Suk’s interview for the movie Big Family went ahead as planned. The event organizers decided to proceed after closely monitoring the situation. In addition, Major entertainment companies, including HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment, have reportedly received calls urging their artists to cancel appearances, refrain from attending public events, and avoid political commentary. Insiders say these instructions are framed as recommendations, but the implicit pressure is clear. Prominent acts like BTS , BLACKPINK , and TWICE have already suspended upcoming concerts and fan meetings. A highly anticipated comeback showcase for BLACKPINK and a fan event for SEVENTEEN have been postponed indefinitely. Smaller groups and independent artists have also been forced to shelve performances, as venues across the country shut their doors. Festivals and Public Events Cancelled Nationwide The martial law has also cast a pall over South Korea’s lively public life. Major festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival and regional harvest celebrations, have been abruptly cancelled. Tourist hotspots, including Seoul’s bustling Gangnam and Hongdae districts, have been placed under heavy military surveillance. Public gatherings have been discouraged, and organizers of private events face the risk of intervention if their activities are deemed politically sensitive. The martial law decree has reignited memories of South Korea’s authoritarian past, particularly the military regimes of the 1970s and 1980s. The government’s insistence that the move is aimed solely at rooting out subversion has done little to allay fears of potential overreach. Activists and opposition lawmakers have also condemned the move, calling for immediate oversight and accountability. The Korean Civil Liberties Union has warned of potential human rights abuses under the military’s expanded powers. K-Pop’s Global Standing in Jeopardy: The disruption of South Korea’s cultural scene has implications far beyond its borders. K-Pop, a multi-billion-dollar industry, has long been a cornerstone of South Korea’s international brand, fostering goodwill and economic ties through its widespread appeal. Experts warn that prolonged restrictions could damage the industry’s momentum. “K-Pop is not just entertainment; it’s a global phenomenon that represents South Korea’s openness and creativity,” said Yoon Min-Seok, a media studies expert. “Martial law risks tarnishing that image and alienating its global fanbase.” So what happens now? As South Korea grapples with this new chapter, the nation remains deeply divided. Supporters of the government’s actions argue that security concerns necessitate tough measures, while critics fear the long-term impact on the country’s democracy and global standing. In the meantime, the streets of Seoul remain quiet, the stages are dark, and the vibrant world of K-Pop finds itself muted — a sobering reminder of the far-reaching consequences of martial law in a modern democracy. - Top 3 Korean Christmas movies to enjoy this holiday season while learning a little Korean!
Christmas is all about feeling cozy, spending valuable time with loved ones, and exchanging presents, but no Christmas would be complete without a Christmas movie! We give you three of our favorite Korean Christmas movies this holiday season while learning a little Korean along the way! The festive season is also the perfect time to learn Korean , so even if you have work or responsibilities, the holidays still present the perfect opportunity to learn something new. Ta-weo (“The Tower”) Year: 2012 Genre : Action / Drama / Thriller. It's Christmas Eve, and it has been reported that it is not going to snow tonight, but it is still snowing in Tower Sky, which is a huge building complex in the heart of Seoul. Mr Jo, the owner of the building has decided to throw a lavish 'White Christmas' party, which is the envy of the whole city. Helicopters are flying, buzzing around the towers tethered to snow machines and raining down snow on the rich and famous, denying Mother Nature of her path. A sudden updraft causes one of the helicopters to wobble precariously. A few seconds later, the unthinkable happens. The unstable craft hits the building, ultimately crashing into it, erupting into flames, and sending shards of glass to the merrymakers below. And so, “Fatal Fire” becomes the theme of the party. Witness an epic adventure as partygoers jostle and ride the elevators to save their lives. Beginner and intermediate language learners can benefit from the compelling context provided by the film. It’s nicely cut into manageable scenes, lines, and dialogues, so the Korean language student won’t feel too overwhelmed by it. Okja Year: 2017 Genre: Drama Okja is a great film to watch with friends and family, and it will for sure tug on your heartstrings, which have remained dormant for the past eleven months. Okja is about a pig, but not just any pig. She's a super breed that was developed by an American company. Ten years ago, while she was still a young piglet, she was sent to Korea to be raised locally by a mountain farmer. The other piglets were sent to other countries, and after ten years Okja grew up to the the biggest and best of the brood — which made the experiment a success. Well, at least that’s how the Mirando Corporation, the group that genetically engineered Okja, sees it. And now, ten years later, they want a return on their investment and plan to take her back to New York. But that’s not how Mija , the farmer’s granddaughter, sees it. Okja, in the ten years she’s been with them, has become a friend, a companion, and a beloved member of their little family. This enormous but strangely cute animal is not just some pet, but a friend who once saved her from certain death. What happens when a greedy corporation and a young Korean girl clash head-on? Okja will keep you on that precarious line between agony and relief. This movie would also be ideal for beginners who want to get their feet wet . The vocabulary used is simple enough, and there’s less material to be digested, so you can take your sweet time. There’s a little bit of learning interspersed in a full movie experience. 3. “Yeongeo wanjeonjeongbok” (“Please Teach Me English”) Year: 2003 Genre: Drama Please Teach Me English is a classic comedy film which is full of hilarious errors. A light-hearted look at language learning with a love story and some mischief on the side, this film is made for those who have taken the brave leap and decided to learn another language. The movie goes straight into the heart of every learner's motivation to learn another language. Why are you trying to learn Korean? Motivation is a big part and the movie showcases two classmates who have strong feelings for each other. Can Young Ju ( Lee Na Young ), a homely government office worker, make a confessed womanizer fall in love with her? Will the stars align, or will the gods smile and jeer? Find out in this riotous film. While any Korean learner may find this film relatable, intermediate language students especially will benefit from studying the delivery of the lines , the natural rhythm of the language, and the melodic back-and-forth of conversations. ZPECTRUM PH is an group consisting of aspiring dancers. A dance cover group from Lucena City, Quezon Province, founded in 2022. The name ZPECTRUM takes its inspiration from the word "Spectrum," which symbolizes the captivating range of colors in a rainbow. Much like a rainbow, our group represents a diverse assembly of young, aspiring dancers. Despite our distinctive backgrounds and dance styles, we unite to exhibit our vibrant and enchanting hues, both collectively and as individual performers. Our group are consist of teenagers and young adults ranging from the age of 16-25 years old. Recently, Dojeon Media team member, Henry, got the opportunity to interview this talented dance team! 1. What is your creative process like when choosing a song and choreographing a cover? As a group, we keep an eye on what's trending in the K-pop scene and consider songs that fans are excited about. Balancing popular requests with our group's strengths is key. After choosing a dance to cover, we now move on to the selection of which member will be part of the dance cover, one of the factor in order to be part of the cover is that a member must go through an inside audition and also portrayal is important, dance and portrayal are major factors in choosing the right member. Check out their "Love Me Like This" cover from NMIXX ! 2. What are some of the challenges you face as a dance cover group? As a dance cover group, we face several challenges, but one of the biggest hurdles is coordinating our members’ schedules. Since everyone has their own commitments — whether it’s school, work, or personal responsibilities, finding a common time for rehearsals can be tricky. 3. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you during a performance? When we were invited to an event near our municipality. We were told that the event will be filled with college students coming from different courses, we were all so excited to perform in front of many students, but then when we got there, there were only few students, ranging from 20-30 students and the whole gymnasium was quite. But despite the few numbers of audiences, we still gave our best and performed well. We were still honored to be invited as a guest performer. 4. If you could collaborate with any K-Pop group, who would it be and why? Speaking in behalf of the group, there are so many K-pop groups that we would like to collaborate with. But I think the K-Pop groups that the group would be so excited to collaborate with are ENHYPEN , TWICE , SEVENTEEN , AESPA , and LE SSERAFIM . 5. What advice would you give to other aspiring dancers? (In general K-pop or any genre) For every aspiring dancers out there, be confident and love whatever is it that you are doing. Build up and ignite that passion, that would help you have more confidence and trust in yourself. Take that first step, even if it’s learning just one routine or attending your first class. Progress takes time, so be patient with yourself and be consistent in improving yourself. Just be humble and enjoy the process.
