*Spoilers Ahead!*

She looks like an ordinary working mother. She has a husband, a young daughter, a regular office job, and all the problems that come with trying to balance work and family.

But Yoo Bo-na has another identity.

She is "Kingfisher", a legendary sniper who secretly hunts down criminals who have escaped the justice system.

That is the central mystery behind MBC’s A Bona Fide Killer, and six episodes into the drama, viewers are finally starting to understand that Kingfisher is much more than a cool codename.

So, who exactly is Kingfisher, and why did Yoo Bo-na become one of Korea’s most feared vigilante assassins?

Kingfisher Is Actually Yoo Bo-na

Gong Hyo-jin plays Yoo Bo-na, a woman who seems to have completely left her dangerous past behind.

Bo-na is married to investigative journalist Kwon Tae-sung (Jung Joon-won), and the couple has a young daughter, Yul. After taking three years away from work to care for her child, Bo-na returns to her job at Durumi Electronics.

To her family and colleagues, she is simply a hardworking mother trying to get her life back on track.

But there is one thing nobody knows. Bo-na is the legendary Kingfisher.

She is an expert sniper who works for a secret organisation that targets criminals who have escaped punishment. Her reputation is built around precision, patience and the ability to disappear after completing a mission.

The biggest irony is that her own husband, a journalist, becomes increasingly interested in the mysterious Kingfisher case.

He is unknowingly investigating his own wife.

How Did Bo-na Become Kingfisher?

This is where the drama becomes more interesting than a simple “secret assassin” story.

Bo-na is not presented as someone who kills for money or enjoys violence. Her targets are people who have committed serious crimes but managed to avoid proper punishment.

That is why Kingfisher operates outside the law.

Bo-na believes that some criminals will continue hurting people if nobody stops them. Her missions are therefore built around her own idea of justice.

But the drama also makes it clear that this life comes with a price.

Every time Bo-na pulls the trigger, she risks exposing herself. Every mission could eventually lead investigators back to her family.

And now that she has returned to ordinary life, the danger has become even greater.

The 15-Year-Old Incident That Changed Everything

The biggest clue to Kingfisher's past arrives through Oh Hyun-nam (Ha Yul-ri).

Episodes 2 and 3 reveal that Hyun-nam is not simply another person who gets caught up in Bo-na's dangerous world.

She has a personal connection to Kingfisher.

Fifteen years earlier, Bo-na was involved in a Christmas shooting that left Hyun-nam's father dead. What initially looks like another assassination gradually turns into one of the most important pieces of Bo-na's past.

Hyun-nam eventually joins the team around Bo-na, but she is secretly carrying her own agenda.

She wants revenge. She even manages to poison Kwon Tae-sung and sends evidence of what she has done to Bo-na.

When Bo-na realizes who Hyun-nam really is, the situation becomes deeply personal.

Instead of simply eliminating her, Bo-na confronts the past she has spent years trying to leave behind.

The story reveals that Kingfisher's actions have consequences that stretch far beyond the people she kills.

Kingfisher Almost Loses Her Secret

While Bo-na is dealing with Hyun-nam, Detective Lee Dong-jin (Lee Sang-yi) is also getting closer to the truth.

Dong-jin is part of the investigation into Kingfisher and is determined to identify the sniper who has been operating for years. That creates one of the drama's best tensions.

Bo-na has two people getting dangerously close to her secret. One is a detective hunting Kingfisher. The other is her own husband.

Tae-sung is an investigative journalist, which means he naturally follows stories that other people might avoid. The closer he gets to the Kingfisher case, the more dangerous Bo-na's double life becomes. And Bo-na cannot simply disappear.

She has a daughter to protect, a marriage to maintain, and a normal life she has worked hard to rebuild.

Episodes 5 and 6 Take Kingfisher Into a Casino

The latest episodes push the secret identity story even further.

Bo-na receives another target: Tak Jong-gu, a wealthy sexual offender who has managed to avoid proper punishment.

Her mission takes her into a casino, where Tae-sung also happens to be present for his own reasons.

That creates the exact situation Bo-na has been trying to avoid.

She is carrying out a secret assassination mission while her husband is nearby.

During the operation, Bo-na also ends up in a physical confrontation with another woman, putting her skills and identity at even greater risk.

The mission eventually turns into a complicated operation involving two targets, and Kingfisher is once again forced to make the final move.

But the most nerve-wracking part is not whether Bo-na can complete the mission.

It is whether Tae-sung will finally realise that the mysterious killer he has been investigating is standing much closer to him than he ever imagined.

Where to Watch A Bona Fide Killer

A Bona Fide Killer premiered on July 31, 2026, and has a total of 14 episodes. New episodes are released every Friday and Saturday.

The drama airs on MBC in South Korea and is available internationally through platforms including Viki and KOCOWA+, depending on the region.

With six episodes now released, the story is moving into an even more dangerous stage as Bo-na's secret identity comes closer to being exposed.

Final Thoughts

A Bona Fide Killer could have easily been just another action drama about a woman with a secret gun.

Instead, it makes the secret itself the most interesting part.

Bo-na is not hiding Kingfisher because she is ashamed of being powerful. She is hiding it because she knows exactly what could happen if the people she loves discover the truth.

And after everything that has happened in the first six episodes, it feels like the secret cannot stay buried forever.

Do you think Tae-sung will be the first person to discover that his wife is Kingfisher, or will Detective Lee Dong-jin get to the truth first?
