  • Korean Actors: Behavioral Insights From Rude to Ruder. Plus, Our Unexpected Encounter With One of Them!

Unexpectedly, Nam Joo-hyuk and Kim Tae-ri made this year's list of "worst" actors, as chosen by the media. What happened? We discuss why this might have happened and our personal experience with one of these actors! Image: Korean Actors Nam Joo-hyuk, Kim Tae-ri and Ma Dong-seok - Photo: myreview.com Surprising Selections in "Worst Of" Picks This year's media-selected "worst movie" and " rudest cast" lists have delivered some shocking inclusions, and the Dojeon team was left reading these nominations over and over. Nam Joo-hyuk , landed as a second runner up, and this is most likely due to his school violence and harsh bullying, not to mention his underage drinking scandals, all of which have impacted his career, as seen through his film Remember 's publicity, it was the news of Kim Tae-ri, star of the hit drama Mr. Sunshine , reportedly securing the runner-up position that truly stunned fans. Journalists' opinion Journalists often get the chance to work closely with many K-stars at events and galas in order to pester them for photos in order to sell them for a high price in the media. Journalists are those who voted for this topic. These are the people who get the gossip before anyone else does, so their opinion matters on this topic. Self-confidence and arrogance are two different qualities, Kim Tae-ri often showcases, as she acts as if she is superior to others, and often chooses to ignore journalists during interviews, or it's been rumored that sometimes she even starts doodling, which is simply just rude. This evokes comparisons with her immature onscreen personality Na Hee-do in Twenty-Five, Twenty-One while she was promoting her new film Alienoid . Image: Korean Celebs - Photo: tnhelearning.vn Star of Men of Plastic, Not a Mr. Nice Guy in Real Life Hitting hard and taking the lead in first place is the one and only Ma Dong-seok ( Don Lee ), who had absented himself from the promotional materials and interviews for several movies. These were The Roundup and the comedy film Men of Plastic , leaving only other cast members to be interviewed. This simply shows a lack of interest in the roles that he took on, and potentially a lack of interest in his co-stars. Even when the larger-than-life actor was interviewed, he gave answers irrelevant to the questions asked, and was criticized for his “utter lack of professionalism”. Despite being the film’s producer and lead actor, Ma Dong-seok did not do his best to promote the film, leading press reporters to have reservations about his character, despite the film’s strong box office performance. Meeting Ma Dong-seok in person Behind-the-scenes photos of Pig Village filming (Credits: Lewis Hooper) However, our team member Lewis Hooper worked on set with Ma Dong-seok , filming Pig Village , which is set to be released later this year. Lewis had the chance to meet the star on the way to his dressing room by mistake. Lewis thought that the star was very friendly and charismatic, and happy to stop for a quick photo and talk. Was this because he was not a journalist and a member of the cast? What are your thoughts on these rude celebs? We would love to hear from you in the comments below! #KoreanActors #RudeActors #CelebrityScandal #WorstMovie #NamJooHyuk #KimTaeRi

  • "Squid Game": 6 Character Deaths That Shattered Viewers, Ranked!

The official poster for Squid Game (Image via Netflix). Netflix’s most celebrated drama, Squid Game ,  concluded on June 27, bringing an end to a phenomenon that first captivated viewers in September 2021. Upon its debut, Squid Game  ranked number one in all 93 countries where Netflix is available—a testament to its global popularity. Fans were enthralled by its twists and turns, passionately discussing theories for future seasons, flaunting merchandise, and even reenacting the games from the series. Squid Game  was more than just a show; it became a cultural phenomenon that once again spotlighted South Korea’s exceptional storytelling, innovative concepts, and bold visual style on the world stage. With 45.6 billion won (USD 33,375,297) at stake, players risked their lives in a deadly series of childhood games, where the reward was either the winning amount and survival, or death. Across its three seasons, the series delivered plenty of unforgettable moments, but it was the deaths of certain characters that left us truly heartbroken. Here are six of the most shocking and emotional deaths in Squid Game , ranked. 6. Kim Jun-hee (Player 222) – Jo Yu-ri Jo Yu-ri's character poster from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). A young, orphaned mother, Jun-hee , ( Jo Yu-ri ), entered the game hoping to win the prize money for a better future for herself and her unborn child. During the jump rope game , however, she realizes that with a swollen, broken ankle, she cannot continue, let alone protect her baby. In a devastating moment, she chooses to sacrifice herself, echoing the heartbreaking decision made by Geum-ja ( Player 149 ), another mother who gave up her life. Jun-hee’s death left viewers stunned and heartbroken. It also prompted discussion over whether the story truly required the noble arc of a mother’s ultimate sacrifice. 5. Cho Sang-woo (Player 218) – Park Hae-soo Park Hae-soo's character poster from Squid Game (Image via Netflix) Seong Gi-hun’s childhood friend, Cho Sang-woo ( Park Hae-soo ), had one of the most compelling and well-developed arcs in Squid Game . A graduate of the prestigious Seoul National University and a once-successful investment banker, Sang-woo finds himself neck-deep in debt due to financial fraud and forgery, ultimately leading him to enter the deadly Squid Games. Like Myung-gi ( Lim Si-wan ) from Season 3, Sang-woo gradually becomes a monster, not out of malice, but out of a desperate need to survive and claim the 45.6 billion won prize. In the final moments, perhaps weighed down by guilt over the lives he’s taken and the betrayals he’s committed, Sang-woo sacrifices himself, allowing Gi-hun to win. Undoubtedly, one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the series. 4. Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067) – Jung Ho-yeon Jung Ho-yeon in a still from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). Jung Ho-yeon ’s breakout role as Kang Sae-byeok introduced viewers to a character shaped by hardship and quiet resilience. A North Korean defector, Sae-byeok, entered the Squid Game with a singular goal: to reunite her family and give her younger brother a better life in South Korea. Hardened by betrayal and survival, she initially keeps her distance from others—until she forms a touching bond with Ji-yeong ( Lee Yoo-mi) , who ultimately sacrifices herself so Sae-byeok can move forward. Though Sae-byeok emerged as one of the strongest contenders to win it all, her journey was tragically cut short when she was killed by Cho Sang-woo ( Park Hae-soo ) in the penultimate game. Her death extinguished not only a life, but also the dreams and quiet hope of a young woman who had finally begun to believe in something more. 3. Abdul Ali (Player 199) – Anupam Tripathi Anupam Tripathi in a still from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). For the first time in Korean television history, an actor of Indian origin— Anupam Tripathi —was cast in a major role with a deeply moving arc. Abdul Ali is neither a villain nor a victim; he is simply a kind, hardworking man trying to provide for his wife and child. Grateful to those who show him kindness, Ali's sincerity and loyalty make his betrayal by Cho Sang-woo ( Park Hae-soo ) during the marble game one of the most heartbreaking moments in Squid Game . His story also subtly critiques the exploitation of immigrant laborers in South Korea ’s capitalist society, portraying the harsh realities of survival and the quiet dignity required to endure them day by day. 2. Cho Hyun-joo (Player 120) – Park Sung-hoon Park Sung-hoon's character poster from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). It’s commendable that a prominent actor like Park Sung-hoon portrayed a transgender character in a major Korean series with depth and compassion. Hyun-joo is far from a filler role; she is a person with a bleeding heart and a dream of undergoing gender confirmation surgery in Thailand . Her ultimate sacrifice—giving her life to protect Jun-hee ( Jo Yu-ri ) and her newborn baby, before being fatally stabbed by Myung-hee ( Lim Si-wan )—resonated deeply with many fans. However, some viewers criticized the show for using Hyun-joo’s character as a token representation, pointing to her early death as reinforcing harmful tropes about transgender characters. 1. Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) – Lee Jung-jae Lee Jung-jae's character poster in Squid Game (Image via Netflix). " We are not horses, we are humans.” — Seong Gi-hun’s powerful final line in Squid Game  Season 3 continues to resonate with fans around the world. What is Squid Game  without its most iconic player? Player 456 ( Lee Jung-jae ), the underdog who won not just once but twice, ultimately makes the most selfless choice of all. In a final act of defiance against the system, Gi-hun sacrifices himself to ensure Jun-hee’s baby survives, bringing an end to the cruel games where human lives were mere entertainment for the VIPs. In a gut-wrenching finale, The Frontman ( Lee Byung-hun ) arrives at Gi-hun’s daughter’s home to deliver the prize money and the heartbreaking news of her father’s death — a tragic yet powerful close to the globally acclaimed series. • 6 Comedic Yet Serious K-Drama Villains We Can’t Get Enough Of!

The official poster for Squid Game (Image via Netflix). If K-drama leads are the heart and soul of the story, then villains are its backbone, because what’s a K-drama without some serious competition? Among them, some villains perfectly balance comedy and menace, effortlessly walking the tightrope between humor and threat. These iconic antagonists are unpredictable, keeping us guessing their next move at every turn. Here, we highlight 6 comedic yet serious K-drama villains we just can’t get enough of! 1. Young Hee – Squid Game seasons 1, 2 and 3 Young Hee in a still from Squid Game (Image via X/ @Rhythm_ndBlue ) Who would’ve thought that a sweet-looking doll with pigtails could become one of television’s most chilling icons? Young Hee , the giant animatronic doll from Squid Game , is the definition of deceptive innocence. With a blank stare and a sing-song voice, she mercilessly guns down contestants in a brutal game of “Red Light, Green Light” — all without a hint of remorse. It’s this unsettling contrast between her childlike appearance and deadly intent that makes her such a standout villain, effortlessly straddling the line between eerie menace and dark, absurd humor. 2. Jung Soo Min (Song Ha Yoon) – Marry My Husband Song Ha Yoon in a still from Marry My Husband (Image via tvN). Kang Ji Won’s ( Park Min Young ) best friend turned ultimate frenemy, Jung Soo Min , is the definition of betrayal. She not only stabs Ji Won in the back by having an affair with her husband, Park Min Hwan ( Lee Yi Kyung ), but also lies, manipulates, and gaslights her way through every episode. What makes her truly unforgettable is how her dramatic outbursts and over-the-top expressions inject an unexpected dose of comedy into her otherwise despicable actions. Song Ha Yoon nails the performance, making viewers both despise Jung Soo Min and cheer even harder for Ji Won’s revenge. 3. Ryu Shi Oh (Byeon Woo Seok) – Strong Girl Nam Soon Byeon Woo Seok in a still from Strong Girl Nam Soon (Image via JTBC). The second installment of the Strong Girl   franchise may not have matched its predecessor in impact, but Byeon Woo Seok ’s performance as Ryu Shi Oh was undeniably its standout element. As a villain, Ryu Shi Oh is sinister, calculated, and dangerous — but around Nam Soon ( Lee Yoo Mi ), his icy exterior softens, revealing an unexpectedly charming (and sometimes lovesick) side. Whether he’s playing along with her antics or flashing a deadpan reaction, his dry sense of humour and unexpected vulnerability add a nice twist to an otherwise intimidating antagonist. 4. Cheon Seo Jin (Kim So Yeon) – The Penthouse Series Kim So Yeon in a still from The Penthouse series (Image via SBS). “Oh Yoon Hee!!” — we bet you can still hear that line echoing in your head. Kim So Yeon’ s unforgettable performance as Cheon Seo Jin is pure K-drama villain gold. With an iron grip on her career, family, and reputation, Cheon Seo Jin rules her world with icy precision — until her nemesis, Oh Yoon Hee ( Eugene ), returns to shake everything up. What makes her so iconic isn’t just the scheming and manipulation, but the way Kim So Yeon leans into the character’s exaggerated expressions, operatic meltdowns, and melodramatic flair. Equal parts terrifying and unintentionally hilarious, Cheon Seo Jin is the perfect storm of camp, chaos, and cruelty — a true legend in the villain hall of fame. 5. Baek Sa Eon (Park Jae Yoon) – When The Phone Rings Park Jae Yoon in a still from When The Phone Rings (Image via MBC). “Eonnii-yaa” — just hearing this line sends chills down the spine of fans. Park Jae Yoon delivers a haunting performance as a psychopathic kidnapper who abducts Hong Hee Joo ( Chae Soo Bin ), the mute wife of the presidential spokesperson, only for a shocking twist to reveal that the kidnapper is, in fact, the real Baek Sa Eon . A trained theatre actor, Park Jae Yoon masterfully balances his character’s menacing, unhinged nature with a sharp deadpan humour that complements the drama’s intense makjang style. 6. Thanos (T.O.P) – Squid Game season 2 T.O.P in a still from Squid Game season 2 (Image via Netflix). “Señorita, excuse me?” BIGBANG’s former member T.O.P made a jaw-dropping return to Korean screens with his electrifying performance as Thanos—yes, named after the iconic Avengers  villain—in Squid Game  Season 2 . This wannabe rapper delivers malicious acts wrapped in deadpan humor, turning every scene into a chaotic blend of danger and absurdity. Thanos is the perfect comedic villain we didn’t know we needed, making the games deadlier, edgier, and infinitely more unpredictable. All of the K-dramas mentioned above are available on popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and Viki. • BTS is Back: Can the Kings of K-Pop Still Reign in a Changed Landscape?

BTS returns to a K-pop world in flux. Can they reclaim their throne? We explore how these kings can return to their former glory and take 2025 by the K-pop reigns? Image: BTS members 2025 - Photo: https://savannahneves.pages.dev/ BTS is Back: Returning to a Changed K-Pop Landscape Image: BTS members 2025 - Photo: https://savannahneves.pages.dev/ After a grueling 18 long months of military service , which is a requirement for all Korean men, all of the BTS members have completed their service. It has been confirmed that BTS is officially returning to the global stage later in 2025! 2022 saw the band reach the height of their career and popularity; however, as their return comes, it is a pivotal time for the K-pop industry, with many stars facing cancellation and scandals like never before, not to mention that it has become even more competitive than it once was. Many K-pop insiders and critics, have suggested that the BTS members are about to step back into a very different industry to the one they left from. The industry is currently grappling with stagnant album sales, and growing scrutiny over the intense pressure placed on its stars. The ARMY Awaits with Bated Breath! Currently, there are no plans for all seven BTS members to appear at an event together, that said it has not stopped ARMY from gathering in the humid summer heat in Goyang for the 2025 BTS Festa. The 2025 BTS Festa attracted ARMY from all over the world, and it was reported by locals there that there appeared to be more foreign visitors than native Koreans! This just goes to show the global backing that the BTS members have. Navigating K-Pop's New Era The K-pop industry beyond ARMY and BTS is now a challenge. From the moment BTS went on their military career break, other K-pop sensations from that time period such as BLACKPINK also embarked on their solo careers, and this has meant that the girls have not dropped an album as a group since September 2022. These two groups were once the leaders of K-pop's third generation. Do they still have what it takes to dominate the charts at home and abroad? Many K-pop fans seem to think so, because the fresh faces of K-pop seem to lack the charisma and stand out names like BTS, as the industry has started to become more diverse than it ever has. This can be seen in a range of the amount of smaller scale, yet very popular experimental groups! What can we expect from BTS? As the group have only very recently all fully completed their military service, they have confirmed that they just want to lie low for a little bit. Which is totally fair enough, and this has sparked rumors that the group may not fully come back together and create new music until early next year. J-Hope still has his domestic concerts scheduled for this year, and Jin is also set to hold concerts for fans globally. Suga , after his dunk driving scooter saga last year, also may want to lie low for a little, to give ARMY and the public a chance to forgive and forget this foolish incident a little longer. But a new group album may not come until early next year because J-Hope still has domestic concerts scheduled, and Jin is set to hold concerts for fans across the world over the next few months. It's also possible Suga , who landed in controversy after he was caught drunk-driving a scooter last year, may want to lie low for a little while. Do the Kings of K-pop still have a place at the top? Leave a comment and let the Dojeon team know your thoughts! #BTS #ARMY #BTSARMY #BangtanSonyeondan #BTSpavedtheway #WeAreARMY

  • 6 K-Drama Villains Who Were Too Good at Being Bad

K-drama villains are a different ballgame altogether. While K-drama leads often operate within the confines of clearly defined moral boundaries—heroes as lovers, saviors, protectors, and caretakers—villains are afforded far greater freedom. They are not bound by morality; they can be anyone or anything: demi-gods or devils, petty crooks or cold-blooded assassins. K-drama antagonists play by their own rules, existing beyond concepts of right or wrong, in a league of their own. Over the years, there has also been a rise in the anti-hero characters who dwell in moral grey zones, more layered and intriguingly written, straddling the line between protagonist and antagonist. Here, we list six iconic villains who embody this unique, unforgettable energy. 1. The Frontman (Lee Byung Hun) – Squid Game Seasons 1, 2, and 3 Lee Byung Hun in a still from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). The Frontman , played to perfection by Lee Byung Hun , along with Squid Game 's most iconic player, 456 —immortalized by Lee Jung Jae —are the two pillars of the series, without whom the show simply wouldn’t exist. The Frontman, whose real name is Hwang In-ho, orchestrates the games, sets the rules, and watches from the shadows, often pouring himself a drink as contestants battle it out in brutal, life-or-death versions of childhood games. But he is not without his inner demons—chief among them his estranged brother, police detective Hwang Jun-ho (played by Wi Ha Joon ). Morally ambiguous, enigmatic, and esoteric, The Frontman stands out as one of the finest villains in K-drama history. 2. Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji Yeon) – The Glory The character poster of Lim Ji Yeon from The Glory (Image via Netflix). Lim Ji Yeon had her breakthrough moment playing Park Yeon Jin , the high school bully turned weather presenter, in the critically acclaimed series The Glory . Park Yeon Jin is the ringleader of the group that relentlessly bullied and tormented Moon Dong Eun ( Song Hye Kyo ) during her school years. Years later, when the two cross paths again, Park Yeon Jin casually remarks that what she did to Moon Dong Eun wasn’t enough—and if given the chance, she would do it all over again, perhaps even worse. Vile, chilling, and despicable, Park Yeon Jin is the embodiment of pure evil, and Lim Ji Yeon’s performance was so convincing, fans loved to hate her. 3. Jang Jun Woo / Jang Han Seok (OK Taecyeon) – Vincenzo OK Taecyeon in a character poster from Vincenzo (Image via tvN). Remember the collective ripples of shock fans felt when popular K-pop idol OK Taecyeon was revealed to be the main antagonist in Vincenzo ? The idol-turned-actor was first introduced as a sweet, bumbling legal assistant to Hong Cha Young ( Jeon Yeo Been ), who seemed to have an innocent crush on her. But in a stunning twist, it was later revealed that he is actually Jang Han Seok—the ruthless chairman of Babel Group and the true force of evil behind the chaos. Cold, calculating, and utterly unforgiving, OK Taecyeon proved he’s not just a handsome idol-turned-actor, but a performer with serious acting chops. 4. Seo Myeong Ju (Kim Shin Rok) – Undercover High School Kim Shin Rok in a still from Undercover High School (Image via MBC). Chairwoman of the Byeongmun Foundation and Byeongmun High School, Seo Myeong Ju is egotistical, greedy, and self-serving to the point of complete indifference—even toward her daughter, Lee Ye Na ( Kim Min Ju ). Kim Shin Rok is both terrific and terrifying in the role, portraying Seo Myeong Ju with macabre unpredictability. She effortlessly straddles the line between narcissistic composure and maniacal instability, switching between the two with chilling finesse. 5. Jang Dae Hee (Yoo Jae Myung) – Itaewon Class Yoo Jae Myung in a still from Itaewon Class (Image via JTBC). Jang Dae Hee is the perfect example of how institutionalized power and privilege, when left unchecked, can turn corporate bosses into monsters. That’s exactly what he becomes as the CEO of the food company Jangga Group. In a bid to protect his criminal son, Jang Geun Won ( Ahn Bo Hyun ), he uses his power and influence to get Park Sae Royi ( Park Seo Joon ) jailed. Devious and remorseless, Jang Dae Hee’s character is made even more formidable because Itaewon Class   is a very human story, featuring characters we recognise from real life. Yoo Jae Myung delivers a stellar performance in this role. 6. Kim Joo Young (Kim Seo Hyung) – SKY Castle Kim Seo Hyung in a still from SKY Castle (Image via JTBC). We are often the product of our circumstances, experiences, and environment, and that’s exactly what makes Kim Joo Young such a compelling villain. When we first meet her, she’s poker-faced, all business, and willing to go to any length to get what she wants. But as the story unfolds, layers of her personality are peeled away, and the mask slips. We begin to understand that everything she does is rooted in a dark past, shaped by trauma and obsession. Kim Seo Hyung brings a chilling precision to the role, making Kim Joo Young both terrifying and tragically human. The K-dramas mentioned above are available to stream on platforms like Netflix, Viki, Disney+, and Prime Video. Which K-drama villain terrified you the most and sent chills down your spine? • Suga: "He Wasn't Just a Donor!" Hospital Professor Unveils K-Pop Star's Humble Dedication

Untold stories—the depth of Suga's generosity uncovered by a hospital professor. Here is the heart-warming story, so get your tissues ready! Image: BTS’ Suga volunteers at Severance Hospital (Photo- YouTube, X) Suga's Next Move: The Unveiling Having completed his military service, his global impact has just began to unfold into more positive news following the highly publicised drink driving (DUI) case last year. For a moment, forget the dazzling stage lights and prepare a box of tissues! A lot has been happening in the a quiet wing of a Seoul hospital, as Suga , one of the members of BTS has donated a personal gift of  5 billion won (that's about US$3.62 million!) which is designed to help children with autism spectrum disorder! He is hoping that this slightly overwhelming donation will help purchase cutting edge technology for the Min Yoon Gi Treatment Center, at Severance Hospital as soon as this September. It's one of the most generous moves we've seen from a K-pop artist in ages. Classroom Confidential: Suga's Surprise Dual Life Revealed to Students A part from the very grand donation, Suga really has done something special for these children. Between March and June this year, he dedicated several weekends out of his busy schedule to spend time with those in needs. During his time at the hospital, he worked closely with the children. Imagine him standing there, guitar in hand, gently strumming the strings and guiding them through rhythm exercises, helping them craft their own lyrics, and even perform! When it comes to young children, especially those that suffer with mental health, rhythm and sensory healing is key to aid their recovery and make their lives more enjoyable and manageable. "I realized that music can be a powerful way to express feelings and communicate with the world," Suga shared in his press interview, a sentiment that clearly blossomed from these heartfelt interactions. "It made me happy to be part of the treatment process for children with autism." Some powerful words there from such an iconic and humble star. ARMY Rallies: Fans Flood Min Yoongi Treatment Center with Donations As for the impact? It has been beautiful to witness. Severance Hospital saw tangible results, and the children began to open up, expressing themselves with newfound freedom and blossoming in their social interactions. This just goes to show that music really does have a healing and universal power. ARMY have also been behind some further donations to this amazing cause, and it seems like they might have just forgave Suga for his drinking scandal last year, as they have got to see a more sensitive side to the K-pop mega star. When the Min Yoon Gi Center officially opens, it won't just expand on this incredible work, but it also introduce innovative new music based therapy options. It's a truly heart-warming step that could set a wonderful precedent in the field of pediatric mental health. Which as mental health in Korea is still a very much taboo topic, especially among children and men, this might be one of the first major steps and making that change in Korea society.
