Jun Ji-hyun Makes a Stunning Comeback in Yeon Sang-ho's "Colony" with Ji Chang-wook After 11 Years!

Jun Ji-hyun is back in the game, and it has been a long wait. After 11 years since Assassination, she is finally returning to the big screen, and the comeback energy is very real!

The buzz kicked off at the production briefing for Colony, held on April 6 at CGV Yongsan I Park Mall in Seoul. Director Yeon Sang-ho showed up alongside a stacked cast including Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, Kim Shin-rok, and Go Soo, basically turning the event into a full-on power gathering.

What is the movie Colony all about?

Think survival, but make it intense. The story traps survivors inside a sealed building where an unidentified infection is spreading fast, and things only get worse as the infected evolve. With Yeon Sang-ho, known for Train to Busan and Hellbound, you already know the tension is going to hit hard.

Jun Ji-hyun steps in as Professor Kwon Sae-jeong, a biotechnology expert and the group’s leader. She called herself a “true fan of Yeon Sang-ho”, and her excitement about returning to film after so long is hard to miss.

She also shared that choosing this project felt right because she got to work with a director she admires while being part of a strong ensemble cast. No second-guessing, just instinct and passion.

Director Yeon Sang-ho admitted that he never really imagined casting her at first. But once he heard that she was interested in his work, he decided to reach out. Their first meeting was so impactful that he felt like a scene was unfolding in real time.

He praised her range, pointing to her past roles in My Sassy Girl and Assassination, and noted that this new role sharpens and intensifies that versatility.

Jun Ji-hyun described her character as bold, upright, and someone who does not back down easily. She also said that the raw energy from actors in zombie makeup made the set feel incredibly real and added depth to her performance.

She explained that her acting approach here leans into instinct. Over-preparing can feel too controlled on screen, while a more natural, raw approach brings a stronger sense of realism.

She also reflected on her character’s decisions, saying that in real life, she might make different choices, but the urgency of the role drives everything forward.

As the release gets closer, she admitted to feeling both excitement and nerves. Still, she is confident that Colony will connect with audiences. Colony is set to release in May and is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the season.
