This captivating K-drama recap delves into Way Back Love , where Gong Myung's grim reaper figure mixes tragedy and humor while saving Kim Min Ha's guilt-ridden girl. Let's take a look! Way Back Love still. (Credits: TVING) With a story more like a puzzle, this K-drama slipped under the radar for many. When the Dojeon team started watching it, we were a little worried that we would be disappointed, as there was not much fan hype. However, once we made it past episode two, the story began to pick up. The trailer for the drama and synopsis portrays the impression that most of the story takes place in the present day, and yes, this is only half true; however, the puzzle of the story makes everything clear, switching between the past and the present day. So, what is the plot about? Jung Hee Wan ( Kim Min Ha ) is a 24-year-old woman who no longer has the will to live, so she wants to live a life of a recluse instead of being a social person. One day, her childhood friend and first love, Kim Ram Woo ( Gong Myung ), makes a sudden appearance out of the blue, although he died six years previously and is now a grim reaper. This out of the sorts drama is said to have a sixth sense feeling! Way Back Love  still. (Credits: TVING) The plot later focuses on Kim Ram Woo , who gets Jung Hee Wan to make a bucket list of things to do before she dies. Meanwhile, the feelings that the two once had for each other leave fans feeling a sense of sadness. Way Back Love  still. (Credits: TVING) Dojeon's Mid-season Review Gong Myung and Kim Min Ha are both absolutely amazing in every scene of this drama, showcasing the chemistry of the characters. Episode one was both fun and nostalgic, before shifting into a more dramatic plot, setting the tone for the rest of the series. Way Back Love  still. (Credits: TVING) The Dojeon team loves a bittersweet romance, and the stories that this drama told were somewhat swinging towards comedies at times, which struck a healthy balance. Way Back Love immediately threw us into a flashback to Jung Hee Wan and Kim Ram Woo's high school days. We were able to see their contrasting personalities and full-of-life characteristics, especially with young Hee Wan. Ram Woo did at times come across as a little more reserved and laser-focused on her studies. Unfortunately for Ram Woo, he's pressured into a class-wide April Fools' prank, switching names to confuse their teachers. As for the classmates that Ram Woo traded names with? We discovered that it was the one and only, Hee Wan. We saw in the show that he seemed frustrated with this, and fans of the show seemed gripped on the edge of their seats watching this scene. Hee Wan’s Adulthood: Grief, Regret, and Healing Hee Wan later fully embraces his name, using it to check out BL books and even giving it to boys! To make matters worse, she gets into trouble with bullies and leaves his nametag behind. When faced with bullies, she hilariously draws tattoos on herself, Ram Woo, and their friend Yoon Tae Kyung ( Oh Woo Ri ) to look intimidating. Ram Woo is so relieved when April Fools' is over, only to discover he and Hee Wan are neighbors! He even has to meet her outside their building to deliver a bra his mom sold her online, an he begs her to keep their neighbrly secret at school, and she agrees... for a price. What would you do in this situation? Eventually, Hee Wan finds herself developing a crush on Ram Woo. She buys herself a nice dress and wears it every time she takes out recycling, hoping to run into him. When the opportunity comes and she knows that he’s outside, she rushes to meet him, her dress dripping wet from the wash and her foot injured from dropping a drawer on it. This really does have romance written all over it! Scenes like this are what make the classic K-drama feelings come true. That aside, Hee Wan has the biggest smile when she later sees Ram Woo, and it’s absolutely adorable to see. Flash forward to the present day, however, Hee Wan is not at all happy to see her old friend because he died four years ago. Not only is Ram Woo dead, but he’s a reaper, here to warn Hee Wan that she’ll be dying in one week. Of course, she does not believe him, and so he takes her to the hospital in a time skip to watch another inpatient's death. Strengths & Weaknesses As the truth sinks in, he encourages her to do all the things on her bucket list. When she insists that she doesn’t have one, he asks that she at least humor him and do the things on his own list. Reluctant, she settles on completing ten items, as long as he leaves her alone after. This has made some fans feel a sense of closeness to him, as he shows a sense of encouragement which is very important in any relationship, however at the same time the darkness of the show and storyline contradict the lust for love. Final thoughts We're sure it’s hard for Hee Wan to have Reaper Ram Woo around and to relive her past, but we are starting to see her old vibrancy. We especially liked that the flashbacks were colorful while the present was dark — that way, the brightness in the present paragliding scene really popped. This is also why we believe the show has gained a lot of praise among K-drama fans. In terms of visuals, Way Back Love leans heavily on close-up shots in order to capture the emotions of the characters, which is fantastic. While watching the show, we feel as if we were in the shoes of each character, living the emotions ourselves, and this leads to a beautiful and effective storyline. That said, we're somewhat puzzled by the choice of color palette and editing, or rather, the lack of distinct visual differences. The script at times strongly contrasts Hee Wan's past and present, although in terms of visuals, both are presented very similarly. This means the photography doesn't fully amplify the script's emotional depth. It feels like a missed opportunity to visually echo the narrative's core distinction as to what the director may have wanted viewers of the show to embrace. Have you been watching the show? In a chilling twist, Bona's reluctant shaman, Yeo Ri, springs onto the royal palace scene with her adoring childhood friend—only he's possessed by a demon whose terrifying grip on him is matched only by its shocking, undeniable romantic obsession with her. The Haunted Palace is a fantasy drama, that showcases the Joseon King being haunted by evil and demanding spirits. When a shaman is called to the palace to help, she must confront the government official who was once in love with her. Seems easy? Well, think again. He is also now possessed by an imoogi, which is a mythical serpent-like creature, and the two of them together must help to solve the palace mystery. Many fans of the fantasy K-drama have been impressed with the brilliant level of screenwriting of the show, as it seamlessly combines supernatural and romance elements, which also plays to the advantage of the main characters' electric chemistry. What happened during the dramatic season? (Spoilers!) During the intense season of The Haunted Palace , we have been on a journey of mystery. A determined trip have been tasked with unravelling the palace's ghostly secrets in order to stop further terrifying incidents from taking place, and what started with one spirit quickly spirals out of control. The plot later thickens as the season progressed, and the imoogi and shaman team uncovered what was perhaps more than what they set out for, as they finally discovered the truth behind the evil spirit, and in doing so discover more about their love. The thirteen year old mystery had been unravelling and as viewers find out the truth about the shaman, kidnapping and transforming young children into evil spirits, a secret deal had been struck with Minister Kim who is the Kings grandfather. The deal was a pardon in exchange for helping the royal family escape the shadow which has plagued them for many years. But did he just want to control the spirt? Image: The Haunted Palace - Photo: SBS Korea This sinister pact had ensured the Colossal Shadow continued to torment the royal family, driving the once-benevolent king (our current king's father) into murderous madness. Only Yeo Ri’s grandmother had managed to offer a reprieve. As the current king heartbreakingly revealed to Yeo Ri, the shadow relentlessly returned, eventually taking back control of his son. The nightmare, it seemed, was far from over, and as a result, it had kept viewers hooked to the edge of their seats! For some of the Dojeon team, the king became our favorite character of the show, as he demonstrated his bravery and shared his burdens openly with Yeo Ri. Explaining that he had overall responsibility to protect his people from the shadow, although he did need her help. As Yeo Ri decided it was best to flee, only to confront Kang Cheo about his lies, the anger turned into sadness, which was the moment the King hilariously advised him on from personal, tearful experience. Let's check out some of the funniest moments from the series! Talk about a rude awakening! Kang Cheol only realizes something's wrong when a ransom note-carrying arrow is thrown over the palace wall. After a quick internal debate, he's off to rescue the hostage. As viewers witnessed a brutal fight, Minister Kwak's  special talisman weakened Kang Cheol, and his conscience stopped him from revealing his true self to Gab's mom. Thankfully, Bi Bi swooped in, freeing Yeo Ri and therefore scaring off Minister Kwak's crew with a whirlwind. Yeo Ri, however, was not out of the woods yet, though as her kidnappers almost recaptured her until the King himself, sliced his hand in the process, and two guards bravely intervened. Talk about a brutal scene! Our final thoughts The heart of the mystery: Who is the Colossal Shadow, and why does he seek revenge? Kang Cheol and Yeo Ri believed that evil spirits carried a solvable grudge, and clues later surfaced. We witnessed the Shadow attack the household when the baby spotted Kang Cheol, but not all of the royal relatives. Was this a family curse bigger for them? A big question remained for much of the series: would releasing the spirit's grudge be enough, or would Kang Cheol have to sacrifice his life force to end this centuries-long struggle? What are your thoughts on this long-lasting storyline? The Haunted Palace ended with a whirlwind finale. During the finale, we saw the Colossal Shadow family finally defeated after many years of generational torment and pain. The finale also brought closure to Yeo Ri and Kang Cheol, who throughout the show faced their biggest challenge, with Kang Cheol seemingly deciding to sacrifice himself before an unexpected return later on. Extraordinary You  follows the story of Eun Dan Oh ( Kim Hye Yoon ), a high school student who makes a shocking discovery: she’s just an extra in a comic book, destined to die from a heart condition. Refusing to accept her fate, Dan Oh decides to rewrite her story, find true love, and reclaim her own narrative. Blending fantasy with heartfelt romance, this whimsical rom-com is light, imaginative, and perfect for anyone looking for a feel-good watch with just the right amount of depth. Im Si Wan and Shin Se Kyung are two of the most underrated talents in the Korean entertainment industry, and Run On  is a quiet gem that showcases their depth beautifully. Unlike your typical high-energy K-drama rom-com, Run On  is calm, contemplative, and comforting — more of a slow-burn romance with a healing touch. The story follows Ki Seon Gyeom ( Im Si Wan ), a former sprinter navigating life after sports, and Oh Mi Joo ( Shin Se Kyung ), a passionate subtitle translator. Though their worlds couldn't be more different, together they create something beautifully balanced. Their romance is fresh, engaging, and layered with both heart and humour. Kim Min Jae and Park Gyu Young deliver standout performances and truly deserve more recognition! 5. Before Park Sung Hoon gained global fame with The Glory  and Squid Game , he and Nana showcased incredible chemistry in this underrated political rom-com, Into The Ring . The story centers on a spirited woman who can’t stand injustice and has a track record of quitting jobs over her principles—almost a professional resignee. Fed up, she decides to “enter the ring” by running for the district assembly. Light-hearted, witty, and full of heart, this drama is both hilarious and refreshingly original. 6. Are US K-pop fans disengaging, reflected in the recent drop in K-pop album sales? We discuss this ongoing issue and how we think K-pop might bounce back during the second half of 2025! In a recent survey, data have shown that US album sales for K-pop music are perhaps losing their spark among young fans. This has triggered a hot debate within the K-pop industry, and it has left many asking if the K-pop push into the Western market is perhaps hitting a snag, or whether or not fans are changing how they decide to engage with their favorite K-pop idols. From January to April this year, K-pop album sales have seen a downward spiral for the first time, as only 23.4 million albums were sold, a massive 26% drop compared to the same time last year. This now marks a two-year milestone in sales dropping, since the peak in 2023, where 32.7 million units were sold. Due to the recent cost of living crisis. K-pop fans are changing their spending habits. Even with album sales dipping, big Korean entertainment companies are making more money, thanks to a boom in overseas concerts. The industry should now focus on creating fresh content that offers new sights and sounds for fans, in a new bid to retain K-pop fans and steady their income and profits. Where Are the New K-Pop Global Hits? New K-pop global mega-hits were missing from the charts over the past year, which could also be a reason for the reduction in K-pop sales in the US. Out of Spotify's top 2,500 most-streamed songs worldwide last year, only 25 were K-pop tracks. Even then, BTS dominated the list with 16 songs, and BLACKPINK followed with nine, counting both group and solo releases. This means fresh K-pop tracks struggled to break into the top ranks, due to being less known and represented outside of their native Korea, and also having to compete with US household names. Did Internal Drama Hurt Sales? The ongoing drama between former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin and HYBE executives concerning NewJeans  is also being eyed as a factor impacting album sales. This is because public opinion on this matter among K-pop fans globally was very intense. Money talks, and people have too much going on in their own lives to get involved with the pettiness of NewJeans and Min Hee Jin. The very public dispute shined a light on issues like intense competition for first-week sales, fans buying huge amounts of albums just for signing events, and over-the-top album release strategies. This has led to a more cautious approach to marketing across the industry. Can K-pop Bounce Back And Save Its US Following? Good news for K-pop fans worldwide! Despite the recent dip in album sales, mainly in the US, the second half of the year could see a major comeback.
