South Korea has officially announced a mourning period for the victims and families due to the tragedy in Itaewon that happened on Saturday, October 29 around 22:00 KST. President Yoon Suk Yeol announced in a press conference on Sunday that the Seoul crowd crush resulted in over 150 casualties and at least 82 people injured. The period of national mourning will go from Sunday, October 30 until Saturday, November 5. Numerous K-pop and fashion events scheduled to happen this week were either canceled or delayed in respect for those who lost their lives. One of the biggest K-pop festivals, the 2022 Busan One Asia Festival, scheduled for October 30 was also canceled. Acts like Brave Girls, MAMAMOO , and LE SSERAFIM were scheduled to perform. Fashion house, Gucci, was originally scheduled to have their “Cosmognie” collection at Gyeongbokgung Palace on November 1, but announced that the show is now canceled. They took to social media to make the announcement stating: " We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected by the tragedy in Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea." K-pop entertainment company SM Entertainment, deleted all announcements for their “SMTOWN WONDERLAND 2022” Halloween party that was planned for Oct. 30 and would have featured a live stream and red carpet event to feature its artists in costume. The management company is home to powerhouse acts such as Super Junior , Girls' Generation , NCT , and Aespa . Multiple tv appearances, live-streams, fan events, video premieres have all been canceled throughout the Korean entertainment industry for at least the up-coming week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were involved in this devastating tragedy. As the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) continues its mission to bridge cultures and foster deeper understanding between Korea and the Philippines, this September, KCC proudly presents two significant events that spotlight the beauty and significance of Hangeul —the Korean alphabet—and its lasting impact on modern literature. Hangeul Design Project: Reinterpreting Hangeul in the Modern Era Running from September 6, 2024, to February 28, 2025, at the Korean Cultural Center, the "Hangeul Design Project: Reinterpreting Hangeul in the Modern Era" invites visitors to explore Hangeul's timelessness and its modern-day interpretations. Held in partnership with the National Hangeul Museum, this exhibit is a tribute to the 75 years of friendship between Korea and the Philippines. It aims to spark a deeper interest among Filipinos in Korean culture by showcasing Hangeul in various art forms. From traditional calligraphy to contemporary art, the exhibit will highlight the adaptability of Hangeul, which was created in 1443, to convey new ideas and knowledge across different mediums. One of the exhibit's highlights is the integration of Hangeul with other foreign languages, offering an engaging and accessible perspective on the Korean alphabet. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 9 AM to 4 PM. In addition to the exhibit, KCC has organized a series of performances and workshops to enhance the experience. Entry to concerts is set to get a whole lot tougher from 2025, with HYBE ready to set up facial recognition cameras for all of its concerts. Here is what we know so far! Image: Tekedia.com HYBE is a leading South Korean entertainment company, and from 2025, they have announced their cutting-edge plans to introduce facial recognition technology for all of their concerts. So what is the new system all about? This new system will come as part of a newly modified package called 'Face Pass', and it will debut at a TWS fan meeting in February 2025, with the overall aim of streamlining the entry process to the venue. This new system is part of a collaboration with Toss and InterparkTriple in order to stop ticket touts and the re-selling of tickets through biometric verification. Not everybody is happy! Following this news, members of the K-pop community have expressed their outrage and overall opinions on the new facial recognition technology which will soon come into play. One of the main concerns is data privacy, and the collection of biometric data, which also leads to broader concerns about the information that HYBE and their collaboratives partners will have, and how the information will be used and if it will be sold. HYBE will need to address these privacy concerns as it moves forward with their face pass system. People have been quick to take to social media in order to express their outrage on this new system. Not all musicians agree The fast development of Face Pass represents part of a growing trend in the entertainment industry both in Korea and abroad, where venues and organizers are turning to automated technology in their venues in order to gain control. This has caused a pushback where some musicians actively oppose the use of facial recognition at their concerts due to liabilities and privacy concerns and rightly so. Will this new facial recognition system put people off from going to concerts in the future? Will it make them safer for attendees? Koreans live in a very competitive society. Not only are Korean teens/young adults constantly competing with each other for the best grades or jobs they are also pressured to fit in with their peers. This includes using the latest gadgets, driving the latest cars, and let's not forget, buying luxurious items just because their idols have them! We dig into why young Koreans are obsessively resorting to these expensive goods in order to fit in! Young adults in Korea believe that if they can be accepted by their peers and move with the trend, this would enable them to get accepted in society in terms of a better job and social status. There have been issues where young adults have been bullied in school because of what they wear. Therefore, in order to avoid bullying and confrontation, many Korean teens will beg their parents to buy expensive trendy items for them to wear/bring to school. This issue rose when K-pop idols began to be appointed as brand ambassadors to global fashion brands. Korean mothers were bombarded with pleas from their children to purchase these items. But it is really hard to argue with the results from a marketing point. For instance, after Dior made Jimin their first Asian global Ambassador, their stock price rose to an all-time high. The standing issue about buying luxury brands is not because young adults need them but because it is the latest trend and has been worn by their idols. They are not phased by the costs of these items. Also, it helps them fit in with their peers at school.
