- End of an era?! Why has Jeju's infamous Fire Festival been cancelled?
The famous Korean island Jeju , known for it's volcanic volcanoes held a fire festival each March, but critics have managed to get the event cancelled in the name of a "Climate Crisis". We talk more about this infamous festival and what to expect in the future! Image: Visit Jeju So what is Jeju's fire festival? Since the 1990's, the Korean island of Jeju has welcomed visitors both domestically and internationally to the island each March to celebrate the start of spring, by setting fire to the slops of one of its famous active volcanoes. Let's check out this clip from a previous festival! Why did the fire festival come about? Reinterpreting the cattle farming traditions of the small Korean island of Jeju in a modern sense, the festivals routes came from an ancient tradition called Bangae . Bangae is a traditional method of burning down fields during the time between later winter and early spring, as it renews the grass and gets rid of vermin before cattle graze the rich pastures of the active volcanic landscape. Image: Jeju fire festival - Lewis Hooper Image: Jeju fire festival - Lewis Hooper So what are the environmental impacts? One one hand, burning down fields, although it can lower the risk of natural wildfires, it does result in a worse air quality, and this has been the center of the debate. Some residents say that some small level of environmental damage should be allowed in order to preserve the tradition, and attract visitors to the island since tourist numbers post covid have decreased, however others have suggested that as Jeju island has many UNESCO heritage sites , it is better to avoid any damage to the island, and remember the tradition in other ways. Will the fire festival be held in 2025? For the past three years, since the end of COVID-19 the event has been on hold due to safety and environmental concerns, and whether or not it will return in March 2025, has been a hot topic among locals and local governments, and has not yet been decided. Let us know if you have ever attended Jeju's fire festival in the comments below, and tag us in your photos! #jeju #jejuisland #korea #southkorea #koreatravel #firefestival #climatecrisis

- Ever wonder why there are so many tall K-pop idols/K-drama actors? South Korea is the tallest Asian country! Here's why!
The number of tall K-pop idols has increased so we at Dojeon Media have wondered: Why are South Koreans the tallest in Asia? We have all the interesting details! Read on to find out more! Compared to other Asian countries like China and Japan, South Korea has recorded the highest measurements in Asia in terms of height. Of course, there are several factors related to this, so let's take a look! So what is considered tall in Korea? Many young male Korans are listed as completing their mandatory military service, as many of the BTS members currently do. I believe that this is one of the main factors as to why male Koreans have increased in height over the past decade as their diet is heavily censored, activities, and time spent at the gym. Not only this, but the diet in South Korea has changed significantly in the past 50 years, as Korea was once a very poor country and as a result many Koreans did not have a balanced diet unlike today where there is almost every food imaginable available especially protein items. Having a balanced diet helps your body maintain and gain muscle and help your body function more. So how did Koreans get so much taller? Let's take a look at this video! Koreans are the tallest nationalities in East Asia with their males' average height measuring three centimeters more than that of their Japanese counterparts. In the case of the females, the average height of Koreans is 2.5 centimeters (0.9 inches) more than the Japanese which is impressive when you think about it, as Japan in the 70s and 80s was renowned for being advanced and having good quality of life compared to Koreans. In addition to this, people in the US are shrinking compared to Koreans which is growing. On Instagram, this street interview with YouTube star "K-explorer" featured one Korean man who was 193 cm (6 feet 4 inches) tall! Let's take a look! Additionally, South Korea is unique in how quickly the population has become taller. The change in household income from the poverty in the 1950s to the rich Koreans in the 2000s as Koreans are now one of the biggest spenders of luxury items due to the heavy industrial input in the 90s. The difference is particularly stark in height between South and North Koreans where the living standards couldn't be different and access to nutrition in the North is restricted unlike in the South. Will South Koreans continue to grow taller? Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below. #koreanheight #korean #southkoreanheight #asian #asianheight #koreandiet

- “Kpop Demon Hunters” Takes Center Stage: K-Pop Gets a Musical Twist!
Netflix eyes a live-action adaptation of Kpop Demon Hunter s ! We explain why this highly anticipated move might be a little harder said than done. Image: Kpop Demon Hunters - Photo: NETFLIX The Rise of Kpop Demon Hunters The global animated film phenomenon Kpop Demon Hunters is more than just a compilation K-pop songs. In-fact it has embraced and showcased Korean culture to a global audience, thanks to the high energy world of K-pop, and the movies original catchy songs which have topped the charts in several countries! Following its massive success, fans and industry insiders are buzzing about what's next. Could the stage be calling? The directors themselves have described the movie as a "real musical", sparking discussions about a potential live-action film and, most excitingly, a stage musical adaptation. While a Broadway or West End debut isn't officially confirmed, the stage is set for a new kind of performance. The Dojeon team would for sure be there to soak in the musical if it is confirmed! From Screenplay to Stage: The Art of Adaptation Alright, so although it sounds great to have a musical version of the movie, it is not as simple as it may sound, and as a result, it is a fairly complex journey. Not only do the rights need to be confirmed by the producers of the movie, which is at times an expensive process, but the creative team also needs to think about how they can bring such a production alive. The book writer adapts the film's screenplay into a stage script, known as the "book", which may involve condensing the plot or combining characters to fit the theatrical format. The composer and lyricist then create original songs that aren't just for show—they are essential to the plot, serving to advance the story and reveal the emotional depth of the characters, often replacing what would have been dialogue or inner thoughts in the film, which is what makes live musicals all the more engaging and special for the audience. K-pop musicals are a rapidly growing part of the entertainment industry, blending the spectacle of K-pop with traditional musical theater. While some are original productions, many are adaptations of Western musicals, with K-pop idols taking on lead roles. This phenomenon, often called "K-musicals", has become a significant stage for idols to expand their careers and connect with fans in a new way. Key K-Pop Idols in Musicals K-pop, being on the global radar, is now a successful style of music in its own right. Some musical artists from Korea, such as Fin K L and Ock Joo-hyun, have pioneered this field, and have been able to star in productions like Legally Blonde and Mamma Mia! . Kyuhyun of Super Junior, who has appeared in numerous shows like The Man Who Laughs and Ben Hur . Their participation brings a massive and dedicated fan base to the theater, boosting ticket sales and public interest. The Journey to Opening Night Once the script and score are finalized, the production moves into its next phase. A director and choreographer are brought on board to shape the performance, while a design team crafts the sets, costumes, and lighting that will bring the world of the movie to life. The cast then undergoes a rigorous rehearsal period, learning the music, lines, and choreography, which is all very important to the show. At times, the show is often all about fan reactions and involvement, similar to Christmas pantomimes, which makes the journey all the more special for the stars of the show and the audience. Kpop Demon Hunters has sparked conversations across fan communities, with theories and comparisons still going viral. It’s a love letter to the genre that doesn’t copy but rather celebrates the spirit of the industry, and the forever love of musicals worldwide. Can this pipe dream become a reality in the near future? We would love to hear your thoughts on this new Kpop Demon Hunters musical twist in the comments below!
