  • The Dark Side of K-Dramas Revealed! Script Quality, Ethics, Stigma, & Society. You Can Help!

Korean dramas, affectionately known as K-dramas, have become a global sensation, captivating audiences with their compelling narratives and charismatic characters. However, beneath the glitz and glamour, a growing controversy surrounds the ethics of scriptwriting and its potential impact on society. We dive into the concerning portrayal of minorities as villains, explore evidence from notable dramas, and raise questions about its reflection of reality or a manifestation of an envious and racist mentality . Bullying Culture in K-Dramas: Villainization of Minorities One unsettling aspect of K-dramas is the portrayal of certain groups as antagonists, inadvertently showcasing elements of Korea's bullying culture. This depiction reinforces harmful stereotypes and prejudices, contributing to further societal divisions. As an influential medium, K-drama scriptwriters hold a responsibility in shaping public perceptions and attitudes. Evidence from Divorce Attorney Shin - Episodes 9 and 10 The drama Divorce Attorney Shin presents a troubling example where a Vietnamese wife ( Kim Hyong Ji Yun One the Woman 2021) is depicted as a liar. Such portrayals not only foster xenophobia but also perpetuate the notion that individuals from specific countries are untrustworthy or dishonest. These stereotypes go beyond mere entertainment and can influence real-world views. The Perilous Plot Twist in The Good Bad Mother In The Good Bad Mother , a shocking plot twist portrays a rich businessman as a murderer. This dangerous portrayal suggests that wealth and power are synonymous with criminal tendencies, perpetuating mistrust and fear in society. Such misrepresentations damage the reputation of successful individuals and create unnecessary stigma. The Danger of Stigma Through Low-Value Screenwriting Creating stigmas through low-value screenwriting can have dire consequences. Harmful stereotypes and negative depictions of minorities reinforce discrimination and prejudice, causing real harm to individuals and communities. Media plays a significant role in shaping societal attitudes, making it vital for scriptwriters to exercise caution and promote inclusivity. The Reality vs. Envious and Racist Mentality While K-dramas often mirror aspects of society, it is essential to remember that they are primarily a form of entertainment and storytelling. The portrayal of minorities as villains may not accurately reflect reality but could be a result of the envious and racist mentality present within some scriptwriters or even perpetuated by societal biases. Addressing this issue calls for introspection within both the entertainment industry and society at large. We must confront and challenge discriminatory attitudes while demanding higher ethical standards in scriptwriting. Engaging in constructive dialogue allows us to foster a more inclusive and empathetic representation of all communities in K-dramas and beyond. Promoting Ethical Scriptwriting: The Way Forward As viewers, we hold considerable power in influencing the entertainment industry. By supporting content that portrays diverse characters with depth and respect, we can encourage scriptwriters to embrace responsible storytelling. Furthermore, open discussions about the impact of media representation can lead to increased awareness and accountability. In conclusion, the portrayal of minorities as villains in K-dramas unveils a dark side of script quality that warrants critical examination. The phenomenon intersects with the broader issues of bullying culture, stigma creation, and the reflection of societal realities or envious and racist mentalities. As we seek to bridge the gap between entertainment and ethics, let us work together to foster a society that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and compassion! Disney has realized this, and as a result have shifted some of their focus onto Disney learning tools, through work shops to toys. With many classic Disney animations such as Lion King , bringing a strong nostalgic sense to many generations of Koreans this has led to a long lasting affection for the brand. This isn't merely another animated adventure; it's a deeply resonant story for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, searching for their unique place in the vast universe, a feeling we're sure many Koreans can identify with. Synopsis The main plot follows Elio Solis, an eleven-year-old boy, who, much like many navigating modern Korean society, is desperate to understand his true self and find a genuine connection. Though he begins as an underdog, Elio accidentally stumbles into the most exciting adventure imaginable, proving that even the most unassuming among us can find extraordinary purpose. Elio  offers a timely and heartfelt exploration of what it means to belong, both within oneself and in the wider cosmos. Later, Elio is suddenly tasked with representing our entire planet! Talk about being thrown into the spotlight! This showcases the realities in which many Koreans often find themselves, from giving presentations, or preparing for interviews. • Controversy takes over as regulation of online entertainment shows begins. Fans demand an apology!

Controversy has started to take over as regulation of online entertainment shows began in South Korea. We dive into one specific YouTube channel case that has fans and the local government asking for an apology! Since I was mostly raised in the UK, I am used to watching regulated TV shows, especially shows on the BBC, unlike in Korea where many shows have gone unregulated until recently. To get a better understanding, many complaints about offensive remarks on online variety shows have stirred up controversy over the relatively light regulation given to online-only content. This has been a problem worldwide in more recent times. however in Korea until now, it has mostly gone unnoticed. Some people argue that while the freedom given to digital platforms helps enrich Korea's content landscape, there is also a need for new regulations to guard against the potentially damaging effects of some shows, which I agree with. I think there of course needs to be some regulation in place in order to make digital platforms, safe and open to everybody. I strongly disagree that not having any regulation in place makes Korea a more enriched place, and I find it more of an excuse from regulation bodies. YouTube channel Psick Univ , featuring comedians Lee Yong Ju, Kim Min Su, and Jung Jae Hyung, recently caused controversy with comments about rural Korea. Having worked with local Korean Governments to try and put rural Korea back on the map, especially the tourist map, I can understand where these complaints have come from, as rural Korea is where most people began before making money through large corporations like LG and Samsung . The channel, which had over 3.1 million subscribers, lost over 210,000 subscribers over three weeks after posting a video titled, "We Came to Yeongyang, the Smallest City in Gyeongsang Province " on May 11th this year. In the video, the three comedians tour Yeongyang while frequently making negative comments about the place, describing a local river as "filled with manure," and locally made blueberry jelly as tasting like "a grandmother's flesh." Although I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions to publicly posting something so negative online will only lead to a negative backlash. I have learned that working in the public light, you should never really post your own opinions, especially political views. The channel has posted a public apology "We deeply regret not having fully considered the negative impact it could have on the community." however critics and previous fans are claiming that the hosts were discriminating against people who were from these towns. What do you think? For me, I think that if you are seen as a public figure you should not post strong opinions, which can influence others easily in a negative way, however, you should have the right to be creative and create content that people will enjoy and lead to your success. I also believe that regulating online platforms is a good thing and it should have been done a long time ago to make these sites welcoming and safe for everyone who uses them. Regulation is mostly for TV shows and commercials. For example, showing alcohol adverts or using swear words after 9 or 10 PM at night when children are likely to be asleep. You can check out the channel at the center of this hot topic here: https://www.youtube.com/@%ED%94%BC%EC%8B%9D%EB%8C%80%ED%95%99 Let us know in the comments below if you think regulation of entertainment shows should happen. #PsickUniv #YouTubeChannel

  • Gold medal in the bag, thanks to Korea's Olympic champion Oh Sang UK!

Oh Sang Uk scores a gold medal for South Korea! We replay the amazing bout to win gold for the three-time World Champion and two-time Olympic champion! Usually, I tend not to watch the Olympics, or at least not all of it, however recently, I have found myself becoming more interested in the games. Like many, I tuned in to watch the Olympics on Saturday 27th of July 2024, and was taken back by the fencing round for both the men's and women's rounds. However, I was particularly glued to my screen when Oh Sang Uk came on. His flawless moves (especially in his footwork) and long strides kept me watching. It looked like he was not even trying at some points, though winning each set and I found that really impressive! Let's check out the best moments! After taking team gold in Tokyo, Korea's three-time world champion Oh Sang Uk took his first individual Olympic title in the men's sabre final over Tunisia’s Fares Ferjani in an epic battle at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on 27 July. The fencing games were staged at the iconic Grand Palais , the fencers were tied 3-3 before Oh took off for what he thought would be an easy 15-6 victory, but the video was reviewed after he prematurely celebrated his 15-point win and the games continued. As the game played out, his opponent, Ferjani began to stage a monumental comeback, climbing to 14-11 after he was down eight points, but ultimately fell to Oh for a final score of 15-11 that notably ended with the Korean in the splits. For me, it was a perfect way to showcase his incredible talent to the world and take pride in winning yet another gold medal for his country. Let us know in the comments below if you tuned in to watch Korea take this gold medal. #2024ParisOlympics #fencing #OhSangUk

  • BTS's leader RM writes heartfelt message to fans before military service

BTS's emotionally strong leader, RM (Rap Monster aka Kim Namjoon), took to Instagram stories on December 10, 2023, to send a heartfelt message to ARMY a day before his military enlistment. Read on to see what he said! In an emotional and honest reveal of how he felt going into the military, RM expresses his deep feelings for the past 10 years as being part of the global sensation BTS . He expresses his want to be part of ARMY 's side "even though he is not at their side" and promises that he will once again be reunited with his fans and bandmates soon. Here is what the letter says: Hello to everyone I love, That day has come at last. I feel like there were so many things I wanted to say to you, but now that it’s here, I can’t seem to find the words. I was so happy to have been able to live as [a member of] BTS for the past 10 years. I’ve said this over and over again, but since an end is also a beginning! I have faith and I have no doubt that after this passes, new good things will be waiting for us. Seokjin hyung and Hoseok, who had to go through this first, must have had a much harder time than us. It may be a bit late, but seeing them gallantly doing such a great job gives me unparalleled courage. I believe that this period of 18 months, which could be seen as either long or short depending on how you look at it, will give us all new and unfamiliar inspiration and learning. Though I’m scared and fearful as well, what could be more comforting than the fact that there is something to anticipate and look forward to during this uncertain time? Aside from my own work, it is most likely your love. The fact that I’m a person whom someone may be constantly remembering and whom someone is waiting for—even though there may be times when I feel lonely and melancholy, I think I already feel replete inside with that love. I hope that I, too, can be that kind of presence for you. Rather than the countless words that linger by our ears before leaving, our time and love and sincerity is what tells us about our future. I wanted to be someone who is always by your side, even when I’m not by your side. Hoping that after diligently living our own lives in our respective places, we will smile broadly when we return, and we will be filled with our feelings without any distance between us. This goodbye is just a goodbye for a little while! When I return, I will say hello again as I greet you. Whenever and wherever we are, here’s hoping that we will be us! Let’s meet in the future. I love you a lot. I hope that [these feelings] will reach you even a little bit. – Namjoon We all wish the very best for RM and the rest of BTS to serve their military service well and quietly come back to their fans! Although scared and not sure of what will come next, ARMY will always be there to support their favorite group! Comment below with your thoughts about this sad but exciting new chapter in BTS's career! #militaryservice #btsmilitaryservice #kimnamjoon
