Despite ranking as a top global show, Squid Game has its dark and dirty secrets, beyond the show, and focuses on the actors' personal lives. This article will dive in and look at two of the actors who have had sexual misconduct and child prostitution charges brought against them.

K-drama fans, take a moment and reflect on the past. You remember Player 100, right? The ruthless and cynical old man? Im Jeong Dae, insisted on continuing the deadly games and made it to the very end? Yes, that's Player 100.

The actor behind the uncharismatic character, Song Young-chang has returned and has taken on an even more prominent role in Squid Game Season 3 – and it seems many have completely forgotten the horrifying reason he faced massive backlash in Season 2.

The Unthinkable Crime He Got Away With..

Before his Squid Game fame, Song Young-chang was arrested on child prostitution charges in the early 2000s. Yes, you read that right. In September 2000, he was apprehended after paying a 16-year-old girl to have sex with him twice in the back of a car. At the time of this vile act, he was 43 years old. This means that he was old enough to be her dad!

Almost twenty-five years ago, when Song Young-chang was an established actor in the Korean TV and film industry, he was arrested for underage prostitution after he paid a 16-year-old girl $150 to have sex with him twice in the back of a car in Goyang, South Korea.

He became the first actor in Korea to be arrested for relations with a minor after the girl recognized his face from his solid bank of acting gigs, being sentenced to 10 months in prison and two years of probation for violating the Juvenile Protection Act. According to one report, his good behavior and remorse for the situation meant he was only behind bars 36 days before being released and moving to Canada.

After spending 36 days in custody during his court case trial, Song Young-chang received a suspended sentence. So why did the production of Squid Game hire him again for a further role, and even for his first role? This sadly happens a lot in the entertainment industry, and convicted sex offenders often go unnoticed and get to work with minors in some cases on long set days. Does Netflix not vet their actors?

Netflix's Staggering Silence

The most deafening part of this scandal? Netflix has issued absolutely no comment. As Squid Game continues to break records and capture imaginations, the streaming giant stands by, apparently unconcerned that one of its prominent stars is a convicted sexual predator who exploited a minor.

The question remains: What message does this send to viewers and victims alike when such a dark past is seemingly overlooked for global stardom? The hypocrisy is stunning, and the silence from Netflix is chilling. Did Netflix know? Are they trying to cover this dirty little secret up?

Next on the list, Oh Yeong Su

The beloved actor who at one point in his life captivated millions of viewers as Player 001 otherwise known as Oh Il Nam in the global phenomenal show Squid Game has been found guilty of sexual misconduct.

This bombshell revelation came to light last year in March 2024, after a South Korean court delivered the verdict, and as a result Oh Young Su was convicted of sexually harassing a women way back in 2017.

The sentence?

Sadly, the sentence was not one to ring home about, as only an eight month prison sentence was awarded, and this was even suspended for two years, alongside a mandatory 40 hour sexual violence class.

This meant that the actor who is now 78 years old, is now officially a convicted sex offender, who by the thread of string avoided jail time. Was this because of his fame? Or because there was not enough evidence? Or because of his age?

In denial

Despite the shocking conviction, Oh Yeong Su vehemently denies the charges, and his legal team is already preparing to appeal the verdict. The future of his career, and the legacy of his iconic Squid Game role, now hangs precariously in the balance.
