For K-pop newbies and veterans alike, it is time to rejoice as BTS has once again taken over the globe. With their new, mature energy circulating across North America right now on their ARIRANG world tour, the Dojeon Team is excited to see what "goodies" they'll be dropping! The Collectable Culture
Like any other hobby, K-pop albums are much different than your standard "CD". Not only does it grab you with nostalgia, but there are ways K-pop companies entice fans to purchase by adding photobooks with concept photos, photocards (random member cards), posters, stickers, and even t-shirts! With all these goodies, it's hard for K-pop fans to resist buying an album from their favorite singer or group!
Why Are There Multiple Versions?
K-pop groups love concepts or themes when it comes to releasing certain albums. Take BTS's most recent release, ARIRANG. It brings South Korean traditions (visuals, music, and themes) and combines them with hip hop, R&B, electronic, and other genres, reflecting the group's maturing style. Even within the album itself, there are specific themes for every single release. ARIRANG's first single "SWIM" has a different feel (slow tempo and more R&B-ish) and theme compared to "2.0", which is mostly hip hop influenced, for example.
Why Fans Buy More Than One Version
Hopping on the hobby train, fans love to purchase more than one version of their group's latest releases due to collecting different photocards, posters, trinkets, and other goodies. The chance to "fill in" their collection is like collecting all the Avengers cards available. Not only do the multiple purchases help fans fulfill their "fandom needs", but it also helps the artists with chart sales. Most recently, ARIRANG just shattered the ceiling for K-pop exports, surpassing the $120 million mark!
