During recent weeks, there has been a growing movement of uprising's against women's universities in Korea. So will they become a thing of the past? We uncover this rising debate and what current students are saying! It is no secret that the birth rate in Korea has hit a global record low, and as a matter of fact, Korea keeps breaking it's own record. Impressive? Well, not really. Imagine schools and university's and the education system in ten or fifteen years time, having to change how it functions, closing down education centers, and perhaps recruiting foreign students in order for the businesses to stay open? This is now turning into a reality in South Korea. Earlier last month, Dongduk Women's University in northern Seoul held a meeting to establish a university development plan at the headquarters level, during which a transition to a coed school was suggested, citing the decrease in the country's school-age population. "The decline in the school-age population is likely to make it difficult to recruit new students in the future. The transition to coeducation can be an alternative" , the school official said. Police called to campus Moves to turn South Korea’s Dongduk Women’s University into a coeducational institution sparked a fierce response from the university’s students this month. The protests, which began on 11 November, rapidly intensified, involving hundreds of students, with police called to the campus this Monday. The protests have been supported by several other women-only universities. By November 13th, student councils from five of the seven women’s universities in South Korea, excluding the prestigious Ewha Womans University in Seoul, had joined in solidarity protests against coeducation, including moves at Dongduk and another university to admit male international students in new departments or international sections at women’s universities. They posted manifestos across campus, spray-painted slogans on walls such as "better to perish than open up", launched a petition campaign, and held highly visible demonstrations and sit-downs. University buildings were occupied, and lectures boycotted on masse. Social Media protests: Something to think about This is not the first time a South Korean women’s university has faced such controversy. Similar proposals at Duksung Women’s University in 2015 and Sungshin Women’s University in 2018 were withdrawn following fierce student opposition. The student council demanded the university transparently share its plans with students and halt plans to admit male students. However, the question remains, does Korea need to face the reality of a gender fluid society, and the changing times that it is facing with it's age demographic and low birth rate? Throughout the world, tattooing is an ancient tradition in many cultures, but the art form has plenty of controversies to go along with it. In East Asia, tattoos have been a touchy subject for centuries , and now, cultural shifts are going head to head with old-school ways of thinking and lawmakers are trying to make sense of it all, this can be seen in Japan and of course Korea. Korea, however has a uniquely interesting case, featuring all the elements of a modern society grappling with tradition and the newer ways of the world. Tattooing in South Korea is on the rise, but there’s much more to the story than the stats suggest.  Our experience with having tattoos in South Korea I personally had two tattoos before moving to Korea, and during my first year in Korea I got a half sleeve on my lower left arm which was completed in Hongdae , Seoul by a Korean tattooist. As a person with tattoos, I have never had a problem in Korea unlike in neighboring Japan where I was told that I could not enter the hot springs because I had tattoos. In my experience, Koreans are a lot more accepting of tattoos than I thought they would be, and I see many Koreans, especially the younger generation with tattoos, most of which are visible. Background to tattoos in Korea Like so many cultures at their foundation, permanent body art in Korea began as a revered and well-established form of artistry. Long before modern borders were established, tribal confederacies throughout the land practiced tattooing as a form of magic protection, safeguarding warriors, hunters, and fishermen from monsters and other enemies. I think this is fascinating, however it can also be seen in tribes which live in the Amazon or places which are cut off from the modern world. This does however reveal an interesting theory about tattooing in general since many similar stories can be found throughout other historical archives. Tattooing typically began as a way to symbolize strength and offer protection in the spiritual realm, but these things were lost or overlooked by more structured governments and civilizations formed. This of course is not the same in modern day, however the reason behind my tattoos were my favorite things, or meaningful experiences or quotes to me, and this does tend to be similar for other people. In its current form, Korean society is a mix of the old, the new, and the futuristic. South Korea enjoys a safe, secure, and highly technological way of life and has finally broken through cultural barriers to earning a place on the global pop culture stage.  With this rapid modernization has come tremendous interest in tattooing, and an increasing portion of young Koreans are eager to get inked. Even some of the biggest K-Pop stars have tattoos, though they must be covered to be shown on Korean TV. This leaves us at an interesting crossroads for tattooing in Korea, with an older generation rooted in tradition clashing with young people excited about tattooing and other art forms. Many of the views regarding tattoos in Korea are not upheld by law but rather by the social norms and pressures that were established for many hundreds of years. Only now are we seeing Korea re-examine its views of tattooing, though many people still view the topic from a traditional standpoint and see it as taboo. For instance, it’s not uncommon to see tattoo bans at spas, gyms, and pools throughout Korea, and people will wear rash guards and sleeves to stay covered. Media outlets and advertisers will avoid displaying images of tattoos, as some still claim they showcase poor morals or ignorance. As reported by the Korea Film Council, Hear Me: Our Summer  drew a total of 65,404 viewers on November 11. Since its release, the film has held firmly at the top of the box office into its second week. Meanwhile, Venom 3 , despite being one of the most anticipated Hollywood releases, slipped to second place, drawing 61,553 viewers on the same day. The long awaited BTS reunion tour might be delayed until 2026. HYBE explains as well as ARMY takes to social media to voice their thoughts! ARMY (the official BTS fandom name) may have to wait longer than anticipated for a BTS reunion tour, following the members enlisting on their mandatory military service . Anticipation for the full group to reunite in 2025 has been hyped through social media, however the band's agency has made comments that it may be delayed until 2026. Hurdles: One hurdle in BTS' reunion is that its member SUGA was investigated over a drunk e-scooter incident in Seoul earlier this year, which led to HYBE's share price dropping to a record low . Some BTS members, however, continue to release solo projects, with Jin set to release his first solo album in November.  Also, J-hope ended eighteen months of South Korean military service in October, and hailed the "sacrifice" of soldiers working to keep the country safe. Before J-Hope, Jin finished his service in June.
