K-pop band Stray Kids is set to perform at the 2024 American Music Awards (AMAs) alongside pop sensations Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, and music icon Mariah Carey! Read on for more details on this epic announcement! This year's AMAs are set for October 6, 2024, and that date is firmly marked in my calendar. The AMAs are all about the performances from the year's favorite artists, as well as welcoming upcoming artists to the stage. Of course, the awards also give artists recognition for their hard work throughout the year. 2024 will see the AMAs broadcast their 50th year, which is an incredible milestone within the music industry. With the rise in K-pop throughout Western countries, K-pop band Stray Kids has been given a fantastic opportunity to perform at this landmark event. The group will be delivering a special performance honoring the legacy of Boy Bands at the American Music Awards. Global phenomenon BTS was however the first K-pop band to perform at the AMAs and rightly so, but since the boys are fulfilling their mandatory military service , Stray Kids have their time to shine. AI has been used more often within the K-pop industry and has caused a rift between K-pop fans who either "love it" or believe that "it takes away from the artists' originality". We discuss both sides of this argument as well as what we believe. Several of the genre’s biggest stars have now experimented with the technology to create music videos and produce songs, including boy band Seventeen . Last year the South Korean group sold around 16 million albums, making them one of the most successful K-pop acts in history. But their most recent album and single, "Maestro" , got fans wondering whether AI was incorporated too much into their M/V. The music video features an AI-generated scene, and at the launch of the album in Seoul, one of the band members, Woozi , told reporters he was "experimenting" with AI when making music. Let's take a look at the video ! Our thoughts I worry that artists will lose the ability to perform to their fullest and as a result, fans will lose touch with their artists. This could affect this industry as a whole as fans will not be able to relate or feel close to the artists using a whole album full of AI-generated lyrics. I love it when the music is a reflection of an artist and their emotions, like Adele or Leona Lewis, and K-pop artists are much more respected when they are hands-on with choreography, lyric writing, and of course composing, so I think AI will take this away from them creatively. That said keeping up with technology is important, but I think in this case it is better to use it moderately, rather than making an album full of AI. Popular road FC model Shin Haeri passes away at 32. Read on to find out what might have happened to her tragic death. Now, if you are not familiar with the model, Shin Haeri gained her place in the spotlight in 2012 after taking part in the Miss Korea Gyeongsangnam-do preliminaries, and from there she worked as a model from 2014 through to 2019. Another racing model and close friend, Jo In Young, shared the sad news on September 14, 2024 that popular road FC model Shin Haeri had passed away at the young age of 32 . "Please offer deep condolences and prayers for Haeri, so she won't feel lonely on her final journey." The funeral service was also held with the burial a day later on September 15, 2024, in Seoul. The racing model was active on her social media accounts up until 3 days before her death and in one of her last posts she wrote "Now that I’m losing weight, my face looks sharper... Should I cut my hair more or let it grow? I can't decide." Shin, also announced on August 31, 2024, that she was to retire as a model as a "Road Girl", which since being a road girl had been the bulk of her career seemed surprising to hear, however it does make me wonder if something else was going on with her behind closed doors. Let's take a look at Shin in action! Did Shin Haeri suffer from body image? When I read this type of quote, it makes me feel sad. This is because I have also suffered from body image, and as a result had an eating disorder in the past it shows a red flag and makes me think that she was also silently going through something similar. That said it would take time for her body to shut down and she appeared fine in the last social media posts where you could see her. Therefore it makes me think she may have been using weight loss injections such as Ozempic which seem to be sweeping across the world right now, and as they are used often in haste they can have really bad effects and life-threatening consequences. I guess we will never really know the truth behind the sudden death, however, fans have stuck by her and expressed their sadness and gratitude on her social media and amongst themselves. October has started, and so have the festivals. Seoul's Thai-themed festival is coming to town. We give you all the tips you need to know before you go this weekend! The weekend of October 5th and 6th will see Cheonggye Plaza become a Thai-themed festival for all ages. Hosted by the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul, you will be able to experience authentic and delicious street food, Thai cultural performances, and much more! Thailand will always hold a special place in my heart, and I find the people very friendly (probably why Thailand is called the "land of smiles"), and the food to be so flavorful and delicious. Our girl Jennie from Blackpink is back with her latest teaser for her solo comeback! We break down the new teaser and our thoughts on her highly-anticipated solo! I have said it before and I will say it again, Jennie is my favorite member of the K-pop girl band Blackpink , and I am delighted that she has taken on her solo career which I am sure she will be very successful in! She recently dropped the teaser video for her new single "Pretty Girls" . Let's take a look at the new teaser! From the start, I love the vintage style concept that has been used, with the screen flickers on what I would imagine being an old black and white TV, with her conservative but very fetching white dress and British teacup. That's before turning up the heat in an old Western-style and more raunchy outfit with that good old-fashioned American radio sound with the slight crackle in the background. It is a little similar however to when Beyonce released "Pretty Girls" as she stripped back her makeup and dress code and went back to her humble African American routes in the deep South. In this video, of course, there are subliminal messages like "Pretty girls treat themselves and pretty girls don't do drugs" , which makes me feel that the video will become more mainstream once the full video has been released. You might know the BTS hit song " Mikrokosmos" , but you might not know the man who wrote it. We dive into the musical genius behind K-pop's global superstar group BTS' hit songs! Up until now, you have probably not heard the name " Marcus McCoan ". However, this UK musician has written songs that have been featured on two BTS albums and both have reached number one in the UK charts! When I heard this, I was very surprised as Korea prides itself on K-pop and everything related to K-culture, so why were these songs chosen? This all started with a call on New Year's Eve when Marcus was invited to a meeting with a manager for the band BTS. Marcus was told that he had only a 48-hour deadline to finish a batch of songs which would then get listened to by the BTS management, which totaled around 10 songs. This was a big task as creating music is often done over several months, if not years, so to hear this I was very shocked! Later, the songs were submitted, and one from the batch was chosen — and not the one he had thought most likely. For me, I usually find that this is the case, when you look at other artists, the more successful songs are often the ones with the less work that has gone into the production, for example, "Angles" by UK artist Robbie Williams. BTS management also debated using a second track from the demos that were sent over to them a couple of months before, which was also accepted pending the production finish. If I had a call like this I would be in total shock and to have a worldwide known band such as BTS request two of my songs which would reach over 50 million people I think it's a fantastic opportunity! I also think that it is great that a UK songwriter was chosen to write two tracks for BTS, as it shows that the K-pop industry is open to collaborating and using an international influence, which of course will help them become more successful overseas and be known in a global market, but this also gives opportunities to musicians overseas to gain recognition in Korea. Now his co-writing and production work is on both of BTS' best-selling albums titled "Map of the Soul: Persona", and "Map of the Soul: 7" which sold 3.69 million and 5 million copies respectively. In addition to his signwriting expertise for the band, his vocals also appear on one of the songs, "Mikrokosmos", which has almost 50 million hits on YouTube, which is an outstanding number! Get ready to be amazed as fireworks light up Seoul's night sky at this year's Seoul World Fireworks Festival ! We give you all the details you need to know before you go! This annual event takes place in the autumn each year, usually the first weekend in October and this year it is set for October 5th ! I have to say that I am so excited for the firework festival as I was unable to attend it last year . In fact, this has been an annual event since the year 2000, and I hope that it continues for many more years to come. Visitors at the event can expect to see around 100,000 fireworks light up the Seoul skyline with an audience of around 20,000 people, though it is estimated that around 120,000 people will see the fireworks from central Seoul. If you head down to the river before 6:30 PM you should be more likely to get a better spot to see the show, as the show begins at 7:30 PM and ends at 8:30 PM . Around the event area, mini events happening throughout the day from 1:00 PM in the Yeouido area including food & drink stalls are also located along the river bank. I have been to Yeouido Park many times throughout my time in Korea, and it always holds special memories for me. I find the place very relaxing and its perfect because it is located right in the heart of Seoul. I do really recommend that you take time out of your schedule and head down to the firework festival, and don't forget to tag us in your photos! The fireworks show is FREE .
