K-pop groups Seventeen, BSS, and IVE are just some of the artists who have delayed their upcoming engagements during this time, and for IVE, this has also halted their promotion for their third EP, IVE Empathy.

BTS' agency BRIGHT MUSIC, have also announced the postponement of content which was due to celebrate member V's 29th birthday, until after the mourning period.

A Nation in Mourning

The horrific crash which occurred as the plane which was en route from Bangkok to Muan, overshot the runway which resulted in a fiery explosion killing all but two people onboard.

Korea's second acting president, Cho Sang Mok, declared a weeklong national mourning period, until January 4, 2025. As a result, large-crowd New Year's celebrations were canceled, along with the highly anticipated 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards, and some television and radio broadcasts. These included the singing competition The King Of Mask Singer, Gag Concert, Boss in the Mirror, and 2 days & 1 Night, among others.

There is no formal bill to stop entertainment activities during the period of national mourning, however it is customary for agencies and artists to suspend their promotions and activities in order to pay respect to the victims and their families during this time.

Uncertain future

There is no doubt, that the Korean entertainment industry faced its fair share of struggles during 2024, and with the Korean entertainment industry taking a collective pause, it shows the solidarity with the nation during this tragic time. The plane crash in Muan, is one of the worst crashes that has happened on Korean soil in decades, and the pause in entertainment activities serves as a somber reminder of the importance of Korea's cultural identity, having stepped back from schedules, profits, and fame during this time.

Here at Dojeon Media we all pay our respects to the victims and their families during this time.
