- Bigger Than BTS?! Their Empire Crumbled, but This K-Pop Group Fought To Survive!
They ruled K-pop, broke all the rules...then everything exploded. We take a look at a legendary K-pop group that lost it all but never disbanded. We cover their rise and fall from grace, and what they're doing to continue their legacy today! Image: Before BTS, the K-pop group that lost it all but never disbanded. Photo: dailyexpress.com BIGBANG: From Icons to Idols One outstanding and impressive aspect is that BIGBANG never officially broke up. Despite ongoing speculation since 2018, the individual members of the band have managed to launch their own solo careers, which, for the most part, have been very successful. Some K-pop fans claim that they have even helped to shape the K-pop industry that we know and love today. This is really a strong testament to the strong dedication of their fanbase V.I.P as they like to be known, who are still hoping for a historic comeback. Image: BigBang. Photo: dailyexpress.com Shaping the face of K-pop Since the mid 2000s, to the early 2010s, BIGBANG managed to bring in eleven out of eighteen domestic singles, which all hit number one, at times the boys often found themselves competing with themselves because their music was so good! This motivation and strong dedication helped to change the K-pop scene forever, with many younger aspiring artists trying to follow in their footsteps. This can be seen a lot clearer if we look at G-Dragon , who we need to thank for designing the iconic "Bang Bong" in 2006. This led to a global trend of K-pop lightsticks , which helped to put K-pop on the global radar. If that wasn't enough another industry barrier was broke when, BIGBANG members, especially G-Dragon and Taeyang , fearlessly launched successful solo careers, paving the way for others. They were also K-Pop's pioneers on the world stage, embarking on the ambitious Alive Galaxy Tour in 2012–2013, reaching fans across North and South America. Simply put, BIGBANG didn't just play the game; they rewrote the rules . BIGBANG: When Idols Fall From Grace Well, sadly being in the public eye means that you are open to public scrutiny. This is for sure the case for the BIGBANG members. After over a decade brining in lots of revenue and interest in Korean soft power culture to a global audience, BIGBANG faced a series of controversies which led their empire to come tumbling down at a very fast pace. In 2011, Daesung was involved in a fatal car accident, though he was ultimately acquitted after the court determined the motorcyclist had died prior to the collision. Years later, in 2019, he faced renewed scrutiny when a building he owned was linked to the infamous Burning Sun Scandal , with allegations of housing illegal businesses. Meanwhile, T.O.P's career, despite a successful comeback in Squid Game , was derailed by a marijuana scandal, leading to his conviction and departure from the group. The group's leader, G-Dragon , a reigning K-pop icon, also faced his share of legal troubles, including past marijuana use allegations, plagiarism claims for his solo hit " Heartbreaker" , and accusations of preferential treatment during his military service; he was recently cleared of new drug allegations due to insufficient evidence. However, the most devastating blow came with the Burning Sun Scandal , which centered on Seungri's involvement as a director and part-owner of the controversial nightclub. This massive scandal ultimately led to Seungri's retirement from entertainment, his official departure from BIGBANG in 2019, and subsequent jail time. Stepping up and Stepping in - BTS BTS did not only just follow the path of their previous idols BIGBANG but they also blasted through new challenges and hurdles a long the way, especially with social media and other digital platforms in order to get a better global reach. Their "Love Yourself" message resonated deeply worldwide, forging an emotional connection with millions of fans. Strategically conquering the Western market with chart-topping hits and Grammy nominations, BTS achieved a level of mainstream success no K-pop group had before. Ultimately, their consistent output, clean image, and profound cultural impact solidified their status as the dominant force in K-Pop's global takeover, and this is why BTS is well known globally, and in some cases, has better outreach overseas than they do in their native Korea. 2025 and 2026 will for sure see the BTS boys take back their reign , at least we think that will happen. Let the Dojeon team know your predictions on why BIGBANG's success came tumbling down. We would love to hear from you! - 6 K-Drama Couples We All Shipped, But Never Got Their Happy Ending
The official poster for Twenty-Five Twenty-One (Image via tvN). K-dramas have a unique way of pulling fans into their world, making you care deeply about the characters, their friendships, families, and, above all, their love stories. As the romance unfolds on screen, fans don’t just watch; they feel it. They create fan edits, post emotional tributes on social media, and root passionately for their favorite couples to overcome every obstacle and find their happily ever after. But sometimes, despite all the chemistry and hope, the love story doesn’t go the way fans dreamed. Whether the couple part ways, one falls for someone else, or tragedy strikes, the ending can leave a lasting ache. Here are six K-drama on-screen couples fans rooted for with all their hearts - but who ultimately didn’t end up together. Baek Yi-jin and Na Hee-do – Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022) Nam Joo-hyuk and Kim Tae-ri in a still from Twenty-Five Twenty-One (Image via tvN). No prizes for guessing that our ace reporter Baek Yi-jin ( Nam Joo-hyuk ) and fencing prodigy Na Hee-do ( Kim Tae-ri ) top the list. Twenty-Five Twenty-One is one of the most loved and celebrated K-dramas of all time, and fans were angry and devastated when the show's lead couple didn’t end up together, despite being unanimously adored. Fans cherished their journey, from being acquaintances to friends and eventually lovers. However, the couple chose to go their separate ways to pursue their individual careers, in a very La La Land -style ending. The finale was so unpopular that many fans demanded a second season, hoping for a different outcome for Baek Yi-jin and Na Hee-do. Yang Geum-myeong and Park Yeong-beom – When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025) Lee Jun-young and IU in a still from When Life Gives You Tangerines (Image via Instagram/@real_2junyoung) Yang Geum-myeong (played by IU ), the daughter of Oh Ae-sun ( also IU ) and Yang Gwan-sik ( Park Bo-gum ), believed she had found her soulmate in Park Yeong-beom ( Lee Jun-young ) - a kind-hearted, sensitive man who reminded her of her father. The couple weathered many storms together: a long-distance relationship, his mother’s constant disapproval and harsh treatment of Geum-myeong, and the quiet struggles that come with being in a long-term relationship. Despite their deep connection, the relationship ultimately crumbled. Geum-myeong eventually married Park Chung-seob ( Kim Seon-ho ). While fans adored the chemistry between IU and Kim Seon-ho, many sympathized with Yeong-beom, noting that he wasn’t a bad person, just someone who failed to stand up for the woman he loved when it mattered most. In the end, it was a case of 'what could have been,' a reminder that sometimes love alone isn’t enough. Han Seo-jun and Lim Ju-kyung – True Beauty (2020) Hwang In-youp and Moon Ga-young in a still from True Beauty (Image via tvN). If you’ve ever experienced second lead syndrome, chances are Han Seo-jun was the reason why. Played by Hwang In-youp , Seo-jun had it all - model-esque looks, bad boy charm, and a soft heart, especially when it came to Lim Ju-kyung ( Moon Ga-young ), his best friend’s girlfriend. Though he kept his feelings hidden, Seo-jun was always there for Ju-kyung - comforting her, protecting her, and quietly loving her from the sidelines. His unwavering loyalty and unspoken affection earned him the fans' wholehearted support, as they believed he deserved to be by her side in the end. But Ju-kyung ultimately followed her heart and chose her first love, Lee Soo-ho ( Cha Eun-woo ), leaving Seo-jun and countless viewers heartbroken. Still, in some alternate universe, we like to believe Han Seo-jun got the girl he loved so deeply. Han Ji-pyeong and Seo Dal-mi – Start-Up (2020) Kim Seon-ho and Suzy in a still from Start-Up (Image via tvN). From one Han to another - Start-Up gave viewers one of the most intense cases of second lead syndrome in recent K-drama history. Han Ji-pyeong ( Kim Seon-ho ) captured hearts with his quiet strength and emotional depth, especially in the show's Cyrano de Bergerac -style twist, where he secretly wrote heartfelt letters to Seo Dal-mi ( Suzy ), pretending to be Nam Do-san ( Nam Joo-hyuk ). What began as a favor turned into something much deeper, as Ji-pyeong unexpectedly fell in love with Dal-mi. But by the time the truth surfaced, her heart already belonged to Do-san. Despite the chemistry between Kim Seon-ho and b, their characters never had a real shot at love, much to the disappointment of fans who were rooting hard for them. Now, with Suzy and Kim Seon-ho confirmed to reunite in a new project, fans are hopeful that this time, their on-screen romance might finally come to fruition. Jang Man-wol and Goo Chan-sung – Hotel Del Luna (2019) IU and Yeo Jin-goo in a still from Hotel Del Luna (Image via tvN). Another IU pairing makes the list—this time in the dark fantasy tragi-comedy Hotel Del Luna . IU plays the stylish yet ill-tempered Jang Man-wol, the centuries-old owner of a hotel that caters exclusively to the dead with unfinished business. Her world is turned upside down when she crosses paths with Goo Chan-sung ( Yeo Jin-goo ), the hotel’s new general manager - a rational and sincere man. What begins as a tense, antagonistic relationship slowly blossoms into a deep and poignant love. But fate has other plans. To atone for her past sins, Man-wol must move on to the afterlife, leaving behind the man she’s finally learned to love. Before she goes, she promises Chan-sung that they’ll find each other again in their next life. The emotional ending left viewers heartbroken, with many hoping for a second season where this otherworldly love story could finally get the closure it deserves. Sung Deok-sun and Kim Jung-hwan – Reply 1988 (2015) Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri in a still from Reply 1988 (Image via tvN). Few K-drama endings have left fans as heartbroken as Reply 1988 . Kim Jung-hwan ( Ryu Jun-yeol ), the quietly devoted and ever-reserved friend, carried a torch for Sung Deok-sun ( Hyeri ) for years. Just when he mustered the courage to confess his love, it was too late - Deok-sun was already in a relationship with Choi Taek ( Park Bo-gum ), his best friend. What made it all the more tragic was that Deok-sun never realized Jung-hwan had feelings for her. He had silently stepped aside, sacrificing his happiness for the sake of friendship. In a bittersweet twist, fans found comfort in knowing that Hyeri and Ryu Jun-yeol were dating in real life. But even that love story ended in a very public breakup, reinforcing the idea that some romances, on-screen and off, just aren’t meant to be. Which on-screen couple did you root for? Im Jeong Dae, insisted on continuing the deadly games and made it to the very end? Yes, that's Player 100. The actor behind the uncharismatic character, Song Young-chang has returned and has taken on an even more prominent role in Squid Game Season 3 – and it seems many have completely forgotten the horrifying reason he faced massive backlash in Season 2. Fans FORGET Player 100's Dark Past – Now He's a Season 3 STAR! The Unthinkable Crime He Got Away With.. Before his Squid Game fame, Song Young-chang was arrested on child prostitution charges in the early 2000s . Yes, you read that right. In September 2000, he was apprehended after paying a 16-year-old girl to have sex with him twice in the back of a car. At the time of this vile act, he was 43 years old. This means that he was old enough to be her dad! Almost twenty-five years ago, when Song Young-chang was an established actor in the Korean TV and film industry, he was arrested for underage prostitution after he paid a 16-year-old girl $150 to have sex with him twice in the back of a car in Goyang , South Korea. He became the first actor in Korea to be arrested for relations with a minor after the girl recognized his face from his solid bank of acting gigs, being sentenced to 10 months in prison and two years of probation for violating the Juvenile Protection Act. According to one report , his good behavior and remorse for the situation meant he was only behind bars 36 days before being released and moving to Canada. Image: Player 100 - Song Young Chang - Photo: Netflix After spending 36 days in custody during his court case trial, Song Young-chang received a suspended sentence. So why did the production of Squid Game hire him again for a further role, and even for his first role? This sadly happens a lot in the entertainment industry, and convicted sex offenders often go unnoticed and get to work with minors in some cases on long set days. Does Netflix not vet their actors? Netflix's Staggering Silence The most deafening part of this scandal? Netflix has issued absolutely no comment. As Squid Game continues to break records and capture imaginations, the streaming giant stands by, apparently unconcerned that one of its prominent stars is a convicted sexual predator who exploited a minor. The question remains: What message does this send to viewers and victims alike when such a dark past is seemingly overlooked for global stardom? The hypocrisy is stunning, and the silence from Netflix is chilling. Did Netflix know? Are they trying to cover this dirty little secret up? Next on the list, Oh Yeong Su Image: Player 001 - Oh Yeong Su Photo: Netflix The beloved actor who at one point in his life captivated millions of viewers as Player 001 otherwise known as Oh Il Nam in the global phenomenal show Squid Game has been found guilty of sexual misconduct. This bombshell revelation came to light last year in March 2024, after a South Korean court delivered the verdict, and as a result Oh Young Su was convicted of sexually harassing a women way back in 2017. The sentence? Sadly, the sentence was not one to ring home about, as only an eight month prison sentence was awarded, and this was even suspended for two years, alongside a mandatory 40 hour sexual violence class. This meant that the actor who is now 78 years old, is now officially a convicted sex offender, who by the thread of string avoided jail time. Was this because of his fame? Or because there was not enough evidence? Or because of his age? In denial Despite the shocking conviction, Oh Yeong Su vehemently denies the charges, and his legal team is already preparing to appeal the verdict. The future of his career, and the legacy of his iconic Squid Game role, now hangs precariously in the balance. How will this scandal impact the perception of one of the most unexpected stars in recent memory? - 10 Korean Actors Who Shot to Fame After One Breakout Role

The K-entertainment industry , like any other entertainment field, is tough and unforgiving. Actors often spend years working tirelessly to maintain a decent lifestyle and secure a steady income, without any guarantee of when the next role will come or where the next paycheck will come from. Many hold out hope for that one transformative role—the breakout performance that can change everything. It’s the role that can catapult a career, bring widespread recognition, and build a dedicated fan base. We take a look at ten actors who found that breakthrough moment—whether early on or after years of perseverance—and became household names. Wi Ha-joon and Jung Ho-yeon - Squid Game Jung Ho-yeon and Wi Ha-joon in a still from Squid Game (Images via Netflix). The monumental success of Squid Game elevated everyone involved, from the creators and cast to the streaming platform itself. Among the biggest breakout stars were Jung Ho-yeon , who portrayed Kang Sae-byeok ( Player 067 ), and Wi Ha-joon , who played Detective Hwang Jun-ho. The series catapulted them into the global spotlight, bringing fame, recognition, lucrative opportunities, and devoted fan bases. While Jung Ho-yeon’s character had a well-rounded arc, some fans were divided over the direction of Wi Ha-joon’s storyline. Regardless, his role remains a crucial element of the series. Kim Seon-ho – Start Up Kim Seon-ho in a still from Start Up (Image via Netflix). Most fans would agree that when they first began watching Start Up , they assumed Kim Seon-ho’s character, Han Ji-pyeong, was the main lead and that the story revolved around him, until Nam Joo-hyuk’s Nam Do-san entered the picture. Nonetheless, Kim Seon-ho carried much of the series with his effortless acting, emotional depth, and, of course, his charming, dimpled smile that won him a new fanbase, particularly among female viewers. It’s safe to say that Kim Seon-ho made Start-Up memorable—perhaps more than the series made him. Hwang In-youp – True Beauty Hwang In Youp in a still from True Beauty (Image via tvN). Undoubtedly, the biggest breakout star of tvN’s school rom-com True Beauty was Hwang In-youp. The then 30-year-old actor effortlessly slipped into the role of Han Seo-jun - a classic bad boy with a heart of gold - who develops feelings for Lim Ju-kyeong ( Moon Ga-young ), despite her being in love with his best friend, Lee Su-ho ( Cha Eun-woo ). Eventually, Han Seo-jun gives up on his love for Ju-kyeong and reconciles with Su-ho. Fans widely admitted to experiencing serious second lead syndrome, making Hwang In-youp an overnight sensation. 4. Park Eun-bin – Extraordinary Attorney Woo Park Eun-bin in a still from Extraordinary Attorney Woo (Image via ENA). Before rising to prominence as a leading actress, Park Eun-bin had already built a successful career as a child star. Her breakthrough came with the titular role in Extraordinary Attorney Woo , where she portrayed Woo Young-woo, a brilliant and unconventional lawyer on the autism spectrum working at the prestigious Hanbada Law Firm. Despite the challenges she faces, Young-woo is determined to succeed on her own terms. Park Eun-bin’s nuanced and heartfelt performance captivated audiences and critics alike, earning her the Grand Prize for Television at the 2023 Baeksang Arts Awards and firmly cementing her place as one of Korea’s top actresses. 5. Lim Si-wan – Misaeng: Incomplete Life Lim Si-wan in a still from Misaeng: Incomplete Life (Image via tvN). While many fans now recognize Lim Si-wan for his role as the morally complex Lee Myung-gi in Squid Game seasons 2 and 3, fewer may realize that he began his career as an idol, debuting with the K-pop group ZE:A alongside fellow actor Park Hyung-sik . However, it was his breakthrough performance in Misaeng: Incomplete Life that truly established him as a serious actor. In the drama, he portrays Jang Geu-rae, a former Baduk (Go) prodigy struggling to adapt to the corporate world. Lim Si-wan delivered a quietly powerful performance, using his gentle appearance and reserved demeanor to bring depth, vulnerability, and resilience to the character. His portrayal earned widespread praise and cemented his place among Korea’s most promising actors. 6. Shin Hye-sun – Mr. Queen Shin Hye-sun in a still from Mr. Queen (Image via tvN). Few actresses possess both exceptional dramatic range and impeccable comic timing - Shin Hye-sun is undoubtedly one of them. In Mr. Queen , she delivers a standout performance as Queen Cheorin of the Joseon era, whose body is mysteriously inhabited by the soul of Jang Bong-hwan (played by Choi Jin-hyuk ), a modern-day, womanizing chef who suffers a near-fatal accident and switches souls with Shin Hye-sun 's character. Watching Shin Hye-sun embody the eccentric, masculine spirit of Bong-hwan while navigating palace life as a queen had audiences in stitches. Her hilarious yet nuanced portrayal not only showcased her comedic brilliance but also reaffirmed her versatility and depth as an actress. 7. Chae Soo-bin – When The Phone Rings Chae Soo-bin in a still from When The Phone Rings (Image via MBC). Chae Soo-bin has long been regarded as one of the most talented yet underrated actresses in Korean television. Despite appearing in several semi-successful projects and being paired with some of the industry's top male leads, widespread recognition didn’t come easily. That changed with her powerful performance in When The Phone Rings , where she portrayed Hong Hee-joo, a mute sign language interpreter trapped in a secretive, loveless marriage with Korea’s presidential spokesperson, Baek Sa-eon (played by Yoo Yeon-seok ). Chae Soo-bin’s emotionally layered performance resonated deeply with viewers, and her compelling chemistry with Yoo Yeon-seok only heightened the show's appeal. The result: a surge in her Instagram following, an uptick in brand endorsements, and the long-overdue recognition she truly deserves. 8. Lim Ji-yeon and Park Sung-hoon – The Glory Park Sung-hoon and Lim Ji-yeon in a still from The Glory (Images via Netflix). Lim Ji-yeon and Park Sung-hoon delivered career-defining performances as the chilling antagonists in The Glory . Portraying Park Yeon-jin and Jeon Jae-joon - ruthless bullies who torment Moon Dong-eun (played by Song Hye-kyo ) throughout her high school years - they brought a disturbing intensity to their roles. Both actors were so convincing in their portrayals that viewers were left torn between loathing their characters and admiring their powerful performances. With The Glory , Lim Ji-yeon and Park Sung-hoon achieved long-overdue breakthroughs, firmly establishing themselves as actors capable of commanding both fear and fascination on screen.
