  • Daegu's 2024 Chimac Festival was a hit for all Korean Fried Chicken lovers and K-pop! [Event Recap]

From July 3 -7, Daegu celebrated its annual Chimac Festival , which was nothing short of spectacular! If you're a fan of Korean Fried Chicken, this is a MUST-DO/EAT activity that you can't miss! Dojeon team member, Lewis, shares his experience from this year's festival! I recently attended the Chimek (Chicken and Beer) festival in Daegu, and before going I was not too sure what to expect. Other than it would be crowded and perhaps overpriced. Well, I was wrong. July is the start of the monsoon season in Korea, which means it is very hot, especially in Daegu which is often referred to as "Dafrica" due to its dry and hot temperatures. A great thing about this festival, is that there was a seating area with chairs in water, so you were able to cool down and not overheat. I thought that this concept was really good and a unique photo opportunity. This area featured Korean-style traditional music with plenty of chicken options around, which for me it felt more like a family-friendly area of the park. On the other side of the park, and with an incredible view of Daegu's 83 Tower , which is part of E-World. You were able to find many people relaxing on the grass or on a picnic blanket enjoying the more laid-back atmosphere of the festival. For me this gave me the opportunity to enjoy some beer and watch the sunset and get lost in my thoughts. Because there were many food and drink tents around this area, it was very relaxing. Of course, this festival would not have been complete without trying some of the many chicken food stalls. For me, I opted for a spicy BBQ chicken, and I have to say I am usually good with spice, however, this chicken since it had been marinating for a long time, hit the spot and truthfully it was a little spicy, HOWEVER the flavor was amazing! The chicken only cost 13,000 KRW (USD 9.400), which I thought was a really good price, as if that was in the UK at a festival, it would have easily cost double. The event was sponsored by the Korean beer brand CASS . This meant that a 400 mL beer only cost 3,000 KRW (USD 2.17) which was a really good price. Usually events like this in Europe and the UK a beer at a festival would cost around 15-18,000 KRW (USD 10.00-13.00). The other area of the festival hosted the main stage, and where there were of course many crowds. This area also featured some restaurants, food stalls, and seating areas. For me, I went to watch the music once the sun went down, and because of the intense heat there were water cannons spraying the crowd now and then, which I have to say was a nice way to cool down! The headline act for Saturday night was the one and only Zior Park which I have to say performed amazingly. His voice and vocal range was really impressive live, as other artists tend to use a lot of auto tune these days, where he actually sang live. The atmosphere for his set was electrifying! A clip of Zior Park's performance! Let us know in the comments below if you went to the 2024 Chimac Festival. Tag us in your photos. #koreanfriedchicken #beer #Cass #2024ChimacFestival #Daegu

  • "One: High School Heroes" – Is This the Next Must-Watch Webtoon K-Drama After "Weak Hero Class"?

One: High School Heroes webtoon-based high school drama. (Credits: Wavve) If you're still recovering from the emotional chaos of Weak Hero Class , you're not alone. But there’s a new webtoon-based K-drama making waves this season — One: High School Heroes . And yes, it might just scratch that same itch! This Wavve original series follows Kim Ui Gyeom (played by rising actor Lee Jung Ha , Moving , 2023), a quiet student with a hidden past and sharp instincts. When he transfers to a notorious school, forcing him into the middle of escalating school violence and mysterious corruption, Ui Gyeom forms an unlikely alliance with classmates who each have their scars. Together, they take on bullies, shady teachers, and a system that keeps failing them. Kim Ui Gyeom faces school bullies head-on in One: High School Heroes (Credits: WAVVE) Sounds familiar? That’s because One: High School Heroes  taps into a lot of the same themes that made Weak Hero Class  a hit: gritty school politics, intense fight scenes, and a tightly woven brotherhood. But where Weak Hero Class  leaned into psychological tension, One  adds more traditional heroism, giving us vigilante-style justice with a bit more optimism. More than just fists — this K-drama dives deep into youth struggles (Credits: WAVVE) The action choreography is solid, with emotionally grounded stakes. It doesn't try to outdo Weak Hero Class  but instead offers a more ensemble-driven story. Think less lone wolf, more “misfit squad vs. the world". And yes — it’s based on the popular webtoon ONE , which has been praised for its grounded storytelling and well-developed characters. Currently streaming on Wavve  (and on Viki  in select regions with subtitles), One: High School Heroes  is halfway through its run and already gaining buzz for its tight pacing and layered villains. So, is it worth watching? If you liked Weak Hero Class  and want something with a similar punch but more team spirit and redemption arcs, this one’s worth adding to your watchlist. What do you think? Is One: High School Heroes  your next binge after Weak Hero Class ? #OneHighSchoolHeroes

  • Netflix's influencer survival show "The Influencer" is Korea's hot topic! But is too much?

Netflix unveiled its first influencer survival show The Influencer , following the success of similar shows such as Physical 100 . In today's world of social media stars, is it too much? We give our opinion on this new hot reality series! As I am sure you already know, the influencer market in Korea has grown to an unimaginable scale over the past couple of years, and thanks to the help of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has accelerated influencers to new heights. When I heard about the new Netflix show, I was really excited. Why? Because I think it will be a great opportunity for many people to experience new opportunities, but on top of that showcase their skills and talents and I love reality TV, of course the drama that comes with it. Producer Lee Jae Seok, the mastermind behind the show, shares his vision: “I thought it would be interesting to gather influencers, divided by algorithms, in one place. You’ll see the top influencers in Korea and experience unique entertainment through the large scale and visuals that only Netflix can deliver, along with never-before-seen social survival missions.” Also, according to the official Netflix website: Fans are treated to a teaser trailer featuring powerful influencers like TikToker Xiajiu, who boasts 27.5 million followers, Jang Geun Seok, Risabae, Pani Bottle, Jin Yong Jin, Shim Euddeum and Daedo Library. Their reactions give a taste of the intense and shocking challenges that await. So what is the show about? The Influencer features 77 South Korean influencers across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and other social media platforms, each of them with their own special content. Through taking part and competing against each other in various challenges, the contestants will compete for the title of "Best Influencer" and the biggest portion of their KRW 300 million prize pot. I would love to take part in this show! Let's check out the trailer! Having watched the trailer, the style and look of the rooms do feel very similar to Squid Game , however, I feel that the main difference here is that the contestants are real-life people, instead of actors or sports celebrities so they have more at stake. I cannot wait for the drama to unfold over the series, and I really hope that the contestants do well. Without a doubt, I will be tuning in to watch this new reality series. The Influencer  streams on August 6, only on Netflix. Let us know your thoughts on this captivating new show in the comments below. #TheInfluencer #Netflix #realityshow #survivalshow #SquidGame #Physical100

  • This former Manchester United player is under investigation for riding a scooter in Seoul without a license. What happened??

A former Manchester United player is being investigated for riding an electric scooter in Seoul without a license. Who is he and what happened? We have all the details! With recent global news coverage of BTS member SUGA , being arrested for a DUI (Driving under the influence) for riding an electric scooter around Yongsan Station in Seoul, another high profile celebrity has also been charged with the same offense, however this time it is a UK football player. Former Manchester United player and current K League 1 FC Seoul star Jesse Lingard is under police investigation for allegedly riding an electric scooter without a license, according to YTN on September 17, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul has begun a pre-investigation into Lingard's case. The charges stem from an incident at 10:20 PM on September 16 in Apgujeong-dong, Seoul, where Lingard allegedly operated an electric scooter without a license. A year ago, Lingard was fined approximately 100 million KRW (~75,457 USD) in the UK for drunk driving and speeding. At the time, he was also handed an 18-month driving suspension, as reported by local media, so my question is will he ever learn his lesson if he has not already?! It appears not, as since he has had a suspension which is still ongoing in the UK since Korea and the UK have a mutual recognition agreement for driving licenses, his suspension means that he cannot legally drive in Korea. Perhaps he did not know this, or was he being ignorant? It does, however, appear that since the SUGA incident, police have been cracking down harder on checking for driving licenses. However, I also feel that scooter companies should enhance their checks when they allow scooters to be rented out through more verifications on the app or booking system. Seoul authorities have also confirmed that the football player was not wearing safety gear while operating the scooter, which is most likely why he was stopped and checked in the first place, however, in the UK, it is not mandatory to wear such safety gear, though it is strongly recommended. • The Dark Side of K-Dramas Revealed! Script Quality, Ethics, Stigma, & Society. You Can Help!

Korean dramas, affectionately known as K-dramas, have become a global sensation, captivating audiences with their compelling narratives and charismatic characters. However, beneath the glitz and glamour, a growing controversy surrounds the ethics of scriptwriting and its potential impact on society. We dive into the concerning portrayal of minorities as villains, explore evidence from notable dramas, and raise questions about its reflection of reality or a manifestation of an envious and racist mentality . Bullying Culture in K-Dramas: Villainization of Minorities One unsettling aspect of K-dramas is the portrayal of certain groups as antagonists, inadvertently showcasing elements of Korea's bullying culture. This depiction reinforces harmful stereotypes and prejudices, contributing to further societal divisions. As an influential medium, K-drama scriptwriters hold a responsibility in shaping public perceptions and attitudes. Evidence from Divorce Attorney Shin - Episodes 9 and 10 The drama Divorce Attorney Shin presents a troubling example where a Vietnamese wife ( Kim Hyong Ji Yun One the Woman 2021) is depicted as a liar. Such portrayals not only foster xenophobia but also perpetuate the notion that individuals from specific countries are untrustworthy or dishonest. These stereotypes go beyond mere entertainment and can influence real-world views. The Perilous Plot Twist in The Good Bad Mother In The Good Bad Mother , a shocking plot twist portrays a rich businessman as a murderer. This dangerous portrayal suggests that wealth and power are synonymous with criminal tendencies, perpetuating mistrust and fear in society. Such misrepresentations damage the reputation of successful individuals and create unnecessary stigma. The Danger of Stigma Through Low-Value Screenwriting Creating stigmas through low-value screenwriting can have dire consequences. Harmful stereotypes and negative depictions of minorities reinforce discrimination and prejudice, causing real harm to individuals and communities. Media plays a significant role in shaping societal attitudes, making it vital for scriptwriters to exercise caution and promote inclusivity. The Reality vs. Envious and Racist Mentality While K-dramas often mirror aspects of society, it is essential to remember that they are primarily a form of entertainment and storytelling. The portrayal of minorities as villains may not accurately reflect reality but could be a result of the envious and racist mentality present within some scriptwriters or even perpetuated by societal biases. Addressing this issue calls for introspection within both the entertainment industry and society at large. We must confront and challenge discriminatory attitudes while demanding higher ethical standards in scriptwriting. Engaging in constructive dialogue allows us to foster a more inclusive and empathetic representation of all communities in K-dramas and beyond. Promoting Ethical Scriptwriting: The Way Forward As viewers, we hold considerable power in influencing the entertainment industry. By supporting content that portrays diverse characters with depth and respect, we can encourage scriptwriters to embrace responsible storytelling. Furthermore, open discussions about the impact of media representation can lead to increased awareness and accountability. In conclusion, the portrayal of minorities as villains in K-dramas unveils a dark side of script quality that warrants critical examination. The phenomenon intersects with the broader issues of bullying culture, stigma creation, and the reflection of societal realities or envious and racist mentalities. As we seek to bridge the gap between entertainment and ethics, let us work together to foster a society that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and compassion!
