The 2026 Daegu Makchang Festival brought food lovers from all over the country together to celebrate one of Korea's grilled delicacies in its hometown of Daegu. Visitors at the festival this year, despite the heavy rain, were able to enjoy authentic street-food traditions and a great atmosphere.

Sizzle & Culture: The Origins of Daegu’s Signature Bite

Makchang grew as a tradition in the 1970s, when market stalls competed to serve up the best flavours and cook grilled intestines, later making Daegu famous as the home of Makchang.

Because of this, thousands of visitors across the country make their way to Daegu each year to try Makchang in its hometown. Today, skilled vendors continue grilling tender, charcoal-smoked pork and beef cuts served alongside a signature savoury soybean dipping sauce, which all cater to a more cultured and defined palate than in the 1970s.

This year's festival took place on October 23rd and 24th at the Sunrise Bridge Plaza in Dongchon Recreation Area, Daegu.

Why Makchang Is Trending Heavily with Gen Z & Young Koreans

Makchang is still loved today by Koreans of all ages, despite Korea becoming a booming economy in recent years. In the past, Makchang was a food staple, where cheap cuts of meat were spiced and marinated so people could enjoy some meat.

However, with Korea's GDP overtaking Japan and other first-world countries, why do many young Koreans, especially Gen Z, love this chewy classic?

For the Dojeon Media team, one thing is clear. The popularity of mukbangs in Korea and social media trends allows the youth to connect with friends over a nostalgic food, just as their parents and ancestors once did. If you are new to Korea, have you tried Makchang?

Why is Soju a Good Pairing for Makchang?

A great pairing for Makchang is soju, another Korean classic. This year, visitors at the festival could enjoy soju and beer while enjoying the variations of Makchang that were on offer.

Soju is, in fact, the perfect pairing for Makchang, thanks to its clean, sharp alcoholic flavor, which some describe as Korea's version of vodka. The clean, crisp soju cuts through the strong, salty-spicy sauce and cleanses your palate, allowing your next bite to feel fresh.

Music, Stalls, and Performances

The festival grounds this year featured an energetic main stage hosted by special guests like baseball legend Oh Seung-hwan, alongside live music acts and dynamic street-dance battles that took place and got the crowds on their feet despite the rain.

The high-energy performances are part of what makes Korea's festivals and pop-up food festivals great. This year, the local produce on offer was awesome, including garlic flavoring and even a live cooking show to inspire visitors to cook makchang at home.

Final Thoughts

For the Dojeon Media team, this year's festival was an unforgettable experience despite the heavy rain. It is really great to see Koreans and tourists alike celebrating one of Korea's most-loved traditional foods, despite many Western countries no longer eating animal intestines like Makchang.

Anyone who is looking for a local Korean experience should definitely head to next year's Makchang Festival in Daegu; it is for sure worth the trip! Will you go next year?
