Interpreting NewJeans' new hit single "How Sweet"!

With almost a staggering 10 million views on their new hit single "How Sweet" we can safely say that the NewJeans phenomenon is hitting globally! We break down our interpretation of "How Sweet" ahead of their Japan debut!




Global K-pop girl sensation NewJeans has been in the headlines recently due to their management's battle with parent company HYBE. But we're here to spread some positivity and focus on just the music!


"How Sweet" has reached #2 on YouTube South Korea's most-watched as of May 29, 2024! Let's break down our thoughts on what this video means and what fans are saying!


Perspectives


Right from the start, we see many different type of viewpoints with their attention on NewJeans! It is unique and creates multiple perspectives within the music video to draw our attention. Let's take a look at the music video first!






The perspective constantly changes with the M/V starting from a dog's point of view to a bird's eye view looking down at the group, and even from a flying insect! Some fans have pointed out that the perspectives can be interpreted as different types of fans when they look at NewJeans. Others have interpreted the the different viewpoints as NewJeans being the center of gossip, referring, from a dog's point of view to a bird's eye to the ADOR/HYBE clash.





Some fans went as far as to pointing out that the winged bugs or things that terrified the girls were "anti-fans" or "haters". As the girls are eaten by a frog and are forced to dance inside a dark area, NewJeans is still able to perform their cool choreography and "block out the haters".


Miami Bass




NewJeans has introduced many smaller genres in their earlier music that K-pop hasn't seen much from such as "Ditto' which featured Jersey Club sounds and "OMG" which had UK garage sounds. "How Sweet" introduces an unfamiliar genre called "Miami Bass". Miami Bass is said to be a different type of old-school hip-hop. Derived from the beaches of Miami, Florida, this type of music is said to be a more upbeat form of hip-hop.
