- Homophobic Koreans?! "Love in the Big City" to rerelease trailer amid fan backlash!
The new highly anticipated K-drama Love in the Big City will be rereleasing their trailer, due to a number of backlash complaints from conservative groups. We cover both sides of the argument as well as give our two cents on this controversial issue! What is the storyline about? Since the trailer for the drama Love in the Big City was released, there has been backlash from anti-LGBTQ+ haters, since the storyline of the drama is based on a gay man and a straight women who live together while leading their own romantic lives. Why has there been hate towards the trailer? The trailer released on YouTube and other sites on October 7th 2024, included scenes of the male protagonist interacting romantically with his male partner, including a kiss. Following the trailer. protests from conservative groups, about the type of content being shown and the drama promoting same sex relationships, it has since been decided that the trailer will be rereleased at a later time. This demonstrates the ongoing 'hate culture' that still exists within Korean society towards same sex couples and minority groups. Let's check out this video, which highlights the controversial backlash from protestors, and expressions from the writer himself! Can Korean mindsets change? Interestingly, the drama itself actually received support from The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency under their program to support special content, and change the ridged mindset that some Koreans still have around same sex couples. Let's take a look at some social media posts on this topic: If you did not know already, the new drama is based on a novel which was published in 2019. Since the release of the novel, it has been translated into an outstanding 15 languages, and in turn has won many awards. Likewise in Korea the book has sold over 100,000 copies. So my question is this: "If the book has sold so many copies in Korea, why is there such a fuss about the dramas trailer?" "Is it okay to read about same sex couples in a book but when you visually see them, you are disgusted by what you are seeing?" Cultural critic Kim Heon Sik criticized the decision: "It is inappropriate for the production company to remove the trailer due to pressure based solely on the trailer itself, without viewers having seen the full content. This could further fuel hate culture." I would agree with his statement. - BLACKPINK'S Rosé and US Pop sensation Bruno Mars debut "APT" and it is nothing short of amazing!
K-pop meets the US music charts! Blackpink's Rosé and Bruno Mars have recently collaborated a new single "APT" and we're here to break it all down for you as well as the release of her full-length upcoming album Rosie ! Rosé has gained her success as being a part of the global phenomenon K-pop girl group BLACKPINK , and since the group has took an extended break ROSÉ has decided to bring her solo career forward. This time with an unlikely collaboration with US pop sensation Bruno Mars. Rosé has also been open about her dream of becoming a "rock star" and as shown in the infamous NETFLIX documentary BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky , Rosé is set in a relaxed acoustic setting playing the guitar. She opened up in this documentary about how music has helped her through tough times in her personal life and that music has been a way for her to release her thoughts in an artistic way. She later mentioned that during her training days as a K-pop idol that she had time to practice her vocals and guitar playing and that she misses it as since BLACKPINK have become famous time has been limited, so the only time that she has to chill out and be with her thoughts musically is at night time when she is supposed to be asleep. This just goes to show that money and success isn't everything right?! Let's check out this emotional clip! On the evening of October 16th 2024 Rosé took to her Instagram to share the eye catching poster (which we can see above) captioning it "APT". The anticipation surrounding this collaboration has been palpable, especially after the duo shared light-hearted moments from a recent gathering, showing their playful chemistry online, which we will later see in an infamous and trending social media post by the star. After teasing fans with their party pictures, BLACKPINK member Rosé and Bruno Mars have finally made the much-awaited announcement of their official collaboration. Fans are buzzing with excitement as BLACKPINK's Rosé has joined forces with the legendary Bruno Mars for a brand-new single "APT". Let's take a look at the official music video for Rose and Bruno Mars! Her collaboration with Bruno Mars in more recent times, has offered and upbeat feel good melody. Raunchy Lyrics? Although the lyrics in the song are catchy, which is why I believe the song will take off, they are rather simple, but at the same time raunchy; Don't you want me like I want you, baby? Don't you need me like I need you now? Sleep tomorrow, but tonight, go crazy All you gotta do is just meet me at the.. For the chorus they are good lyrics to have as it leaves the continuation of the sentence to the listeners imagination. Since the surprise release fans have left comments on the video showing their support for the new single: Our opinion: (Song and Stars) Bruno Mars has always been one of my childhood favorite stars from when I was at University, I remember watching him live in concert when I lived in London. His vocal ability and catchy lyrics at the time of his single "Marry You" and "Grenade" have definitely not been lost over the last ten years and have continues to serve him well in this collaboration with Rosé. Rosé has actually blown me away as well with this new single, as I can feel the passion coming through when she sings. During her time with Blackpink I felt that she was one of the more outgoing members, and this has carried on today, with her sexy image and dress style. I really liked the chemistry that the two stars had together on camera, as the music video was fun, simple and executed very well and I can certainly see why this unlikely collaboration has taken off. Her hair style has also taken a likely resemblance to Marilyn Monroe and a more adult sophisticated look. Fans have also been taking to social media after Rosé taught the US music star Bruno Mars how to play a traditional Korean drinking game, let's check it out! Bruno Mars further fueled the excitement by sharing a candid shot on his Instagram, capturing them playing games with friends. His caption was a humorous recounting of his night, saying, “So this was me hanging on for dear life after @roses_are_rosie introduced me to this Korean drinking game and got me saucy". He continued with a playful anecdote, revealing, “Soon after, she tried to kiss me, and I was like, 'Woah Rosié! What part of the game is this?’” This banter highlights their fun dynamic, sparking interest in how it might influence their musical collaboration. Meanwhile, Rosé's first full-length album Rosie , which includes "APT", is set to release on December 6, 2024 (Friday) . The album will feature 12 songs in total, including the title track, with Rosé participating in both the writing and composing of all the songs, offering fans a more honest and personal story. Could this be the start of something more? Friday December 6th is a date has been marked in my calendar, what about yours? - Overworked and constantly burnt out, we want to know: "Is the 'K-pop model' sustainable? We find out!
With fast turnaround times, a high burnout rate, and intense training that is possibly endangering K-pop idols' health, we at Dojeon Media want to know: "Is the K-pop model sustainable?" We break down some key elements in the "K-pop model" to see if K-pop is in it for the long run! Questions have arisen about the long-term viability of the current K-pop system, with its intense training, rapid debut cycles, and high burnout rates among idols. Discussions focus on the need for more sustainable practices. The more I have looked into K-pop during my time in Korea, and the longer I have worked in the entertainment industry, I have concluded that everything in K-pop is fast, and it has something to do with how oversaturated and competitive the market is. Fans have come to expect at least 2 comebacks per year from groups, not to mention all of the other schedules (variety shows, end-of-year performances, etc.) that the more popular groups have. I think the K-pop industry has created a system for its artists where burnout is inevitable (if you do it long enough and at the same pace with no significant breaks). Or sadly, you will just get replaced or forgotten about. Unless you reach a certain level of fame and can have some say over the pace of your schedule, I imagine it gets exhausting after 7 or so years (not even including time spent as a trainee ). I can't imagine the stress, especially for the more introverted idols. I feel so bad when there are statements saying they have to withdraw due to anxiety, but idols have to go back to performing and putting on a show and a positive front for the cameras. So can the K-pop industry be sustainable in the future? Let's take a look at some of the factors why I think that the K-pop industry is not sustainable in the future: Rigorous Training and Management: K-pop trainees undergo an extremely intensive training process, often for several years, before debuting as an idol. This training installs strong discipline, work ethic, and coping mechanisms to handle the intense demands of the idol lifestyle. K-pop entertainment companies also tend to have very regimented management systems to oversee and support their artists. For example, take a look at Ruka's (BAYBYMONSTER) 10-year journey from trainee to debut ! Tightly-Knit Team Dynamics: K-pop groups are typically comprised of multiple members who experience the idol lifestyle together. This provides a built-in support system and sense of camaraderie that can help idols cope with the pressures they face. The team dynamic is a core part of the K-pop model. However, most of the time this is just fronted and members in any band (worldwide) tend to have negative dynamics with other members. Protective Fanbase: K-pop fans, known as "fandoms" , tend to be extremely dedicated and protective of their idols. Idols receive a tremendous amount of emotional support and encouragement from their fanbase, which can help mitigate feelings of isolation and burnout. I feel like burnout in less than 10 years for artists who are at least semi-successful isn’t normal in the Western music industry (I can’t speak to other industries). I know that fans like to complain about mismanagement and lack of company promotion (Which I have written about in a previous article ), which is absolutely a factor in idols deciding to not renew contracts/leave the industry/focus on other career goals like acting, but I also feel like some of them are probably just tired of it all, and therefore I think with this current rate, the K-pop industry without significant changes can be sustainable in the future. Girls' Generation (SNSD) are known for being one of the most active and legendary groups in K-pop, since they have released many hit songs which have also been successful overseas. Of course, creating hit songs is no easy task, and the girls during their song writing time came up with songs which they were uncertain if they would become successful. Not so long ago, a SNSD song became a hot topic on some online forums discussing how fans thought the song was impressive, catchy and great. This song was "I Got A Boy' which was released back in 2013, which at the time it was released it was a big risk and therefore the girls thought it would be unsuccessful compared to their other hits. Let's take a look at the video at question! In previous interviews the girls shared tha t " This was a song that even received divided opinions from us. Some members reacted with 'What is this?' But then later, the members who chose the song to be the title track said, 'This is a song that the more you listen to it, the more you want to keep listening'". - How Netflix's new rom-com, "Mr. Plankton", captures the chaotic love vibe of "It’s Okay to Not Be Okay"
Netflix has just dropped the trailer for the highly-awaited romantic comedy of the year, Mr. Plankton . Set to release on November 8, 2024, the drama will feature 10 episodes. The series stars Woo Do Hwan ( Bloodhounds 2023) and Lee Yoo Mi (Nam Soon, Strong Girl Nam Soon 2023) in the lead roles, with supporting performances by Oh Jung Se ( It’s Okay to Not Be Okay 2020) and Kim Hae Sook ( My Demon 2023-2024). Directed by Hong Jong Chan, known for Juvenile Justice and Dear My Friends , the series is written by Jo Yong, the screenwriter of the beloved It’s Okay to Not Be Okay . This has raised fan expectations for a similarly thrilling and emotional experience. The drama promises more than a typical rom-com, with the tagline “A last love romantic comedy of two drifting souls”. This hints at an emotional yet humorous journey between two flawed characters. The story follows Hae Jo ( Woo Do Hwan ), who, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor, reunites with his ex-girlfriend Jae Mi ( Lee Yoo Mi ). Jae Mi is grappling with premature menopause, complicating her future as a prospective bride. In a spontaneous decision, Hae Jo kidnaps Jae Mi on the day of her wedding, sparking a chaotic road trip as they search for his real father. This journey, though unplanned, brings them closer, allowing Hae Jo to rediscover the joys of living despite his terminal illness. Woo Do Hwan portrays Hae Jo, a man whose life is in turmoil, which contrasts with his previous action-packed roles like in Bloodhounds . His performance here shows a more vulnerable, comedic side as he grapples with life’s uncertainties. Lee Yoo Mi, who recently wowed audiences in Strong Girl Nam Soon , steps into a more emotionally complex role as Jae Mi. Unlike her past characters, Jae Mi’s struggles are deeply personal, dealing with heartbreak and unexpected health issues but the chattiness is still the same. Fans of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay are curious if Mr. Plankton will follow the same quirky, chaotic style, given Jo Yong’s involvement. With characters battling emotional turmoil, there’s speculation that this drama will also strike a balance between humor and raw vulnerability. What are your thoughts on Mr. Plankton ? Do you think it will live up to the success of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay ? Let us know in the comments! #MrPlankton #ItsOkaytoNotBeOkay #WooDoHwan #LeeYooMin

- The King of K-pop Fashion — SHINee's Key! Plus, our favorite outfits!
Fashion trends within the K-pop industry have taken off, and the King of K-pop fashion Key , from the boy band SHINee , has some incredible styles! We've compiled a list of Key's best-dressed and fashion-forward outfits! Who is Kim Ki Bum? So for those of you who are unfamiliar with this mega star, Kim Ki Bum was born on September 23, 1991, better known by his stage name Key, is a South Korean singer and television personality. Born and raised in Daegu , South Korea, he later moved to Seoul after a successful audition at the SM National Tour Audition Casting. In May 2008, Key debuted as a member of South Korean boy group SHINee , who later went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea, and eventually, he has become the king of K-fashion! "Real men wear pink." Striking right? A wise man once said that real men wear pink, and I couldn't agree more! This striking outfit which showcases faux leather pants truly bring out the hot pink satin sass of his knee-length jacket. The choice of wearing a bow in a dark hue ties the entire outfit together perfectly, and this shows off such a bold fashion statement. The slim shady style hair too, goes remarkably well and I have to say that he definitely pulled this style off. Ahoy! All aboard the boat to discover the city of Atlantis, with all of the passengers being entitled to a VIP seat, unlimited SHINee music, and a style lesson from this very fashionable captain of the Seven Seas and the king of K-pop fashion himself. To me, this photo screams sophistication as well as cementing himself in the K-pop hall of fame due to the confidence and overall flawless style that has been carried off. The dress code that was used for this photoshoot concept matches the theme of Atlantis very well, with the shoulder flares which make a bold statement for a man to wear especially in conservative Korea. It's all about how you "feel" that makes the outfit "pop" Don't hold it against us, but we can't get over the outfits that Key wore in the "Don't Call Me" music video. Fashion is all about confidence, and he has that skill mastered to a tee, and I believe that this is all thanks to the stunning headwear. It almost resembles a sophisticated black crow. I mean not many people can wear a heavily feathered headpiece and not look like a chicken, but Key wears it like like a walk in the park! This bold fashion statement is one to turn heads at a party, which is why it has made it to my favorite fashion items from the King of K-pop fashion. Bold — wear it with confidence! Last up on the list is the amazing outfit from "Don't Call Me" which is a song that lives in our heads rent-free and of course it's welcome too. For me, the rhythm is captivating and the lyrics are sassy (just like man himself Key!). Aside from delivering a dazzling performance, SHINee also served up looks in ensembles that belong on the runway. While all the members looked dashing, it's the sophisticated camel and brown outfit that Key wears that I also want to copy so badly, and on top of this it is a bit more low key compared to some of the other fashion items that he has worn. I have to say, that I also really like the dark angled photo concept as well in this photo. I wonder what bold fashion statements we will see in the second half of 2024! Let us know your favorite outfit by the King of K-pop fashion in the comments below! #SHINee #Key #outfit #kpopoutfits #kpopstyle #kpopfashion
- NewJeans’ Hanni Declares “I Will Testify Alone” Against ADOR’s Bullying – Bold Move or Risky Step?
NewJeans leader Hanni has made a bold move by choosing to testify against the alleged bullying by HYBE . She took to social media to reveal to her fans, "I believe going forward is the right thing to do, no matter how much I think about it". It all started with their mother and creator, Min Hee Jin , former CEO of ADOR , who was removed from her position for plotting against HYBE and forming ADOR as a separate legal entity. On September 11, NewJeans' five members raised concerns about their future in ADOR after being bullied by other managers. They revealed that when Hanni greeted the members of another band at their record label offices, their manager had instructed them to "ignore her" . But that was not the end. When the issue was addressed to the new CEO of ADOR, Kim Joo Young , the matter didn't get resolved. Instead, they were told to bring conclusive evidence to prove their claims. The other band is speculated to be HYBE's BE:LIFT LAB New Girl Group, ILLIT , who made headlines with their debut for having similar concepts to NewJeans. Fans noticed a clip of ILLIT members greeting Hanni on the day of the incident, but the video seems to have been removed from all platforms. Meanwhile, ILLIT’s management has refuted the claims made by NewJeans, saying "they have never interacted" . This incident has allegedly sparked a fan war between NewJeans and ILLIT fans. With ILLIT’s comeback around the corner, it remains to be seen whether they will face controversy this time or have a peaceful return. Coming back to NewJeans' Hanni, she has revealed that she is testifying in court alone for the sake of NewJeans' existence, as well as for the members and fans. Bunnies (NewJeans' official fandom) have also lodged complaints against ADOR for mistreatment. ADOR has mismanaged the group's future activities by cancelling or delaying them. Hanni also added that some HYBE officials will be charged with violating the Personal Information Protection Act. On October 25, 2024, South Korea's Environment and Labor Committee summoned both Hanni and Kim Joo Young to testify in an audit on workplace harassment. In her statement, Hanni thanked Bunnies for their support and reassured them that she made this decision alone without informing her manager or the company. It has been difficult for her, but she is determined to do it solely for NewJeans' existence. Now, the whole K-pop industry is looking forward to Hanni's presence at the hearing and awaits a fair judgment from the officials. Meanwhile, we support NewJeans members and wish them strength in revealing the whole truth. What do you think about this incident? Did Hanni make the right decision or not? Season one concluded with the religious leader and chairman Jung Jin Soo ( Yoo Ah In Seoul Vibe 2022) had vanished, not only this but Park Jung Ja (Kim Shin Rok Uprising 2024) had been resurrected and Min Hye Jin ( Kim Hyun Joo The Bequeathed 2024) had thankfully escaped with baby Toughie despite the child being decreed to damnation. Of course, if that wasn't enough season two is set to show the New Truth, the Arrowheads, and Sodo leader Hye Jin. Hye Jin must grapple with the sudden resurrections of the former command to state her place. Is this possible? Fans have already taken to social media to express their excitement and comment on how fabulous the cast looks at the BIFF 2024 opening ceremony: Let's take a closer look! To recap has a very exciting sense of growth across its series and I find it interesting how the ideas and script are written, I did however find in season one that the script and storyline can be a bit all over the place with many plots, twists, and conspiracies. There’s also a little too much telling and not showing when it comes to the impact of this new teaching — we hear that half the world has been caught up in New Truth fever, but hardly get a nervous sense of it. Similarly, the show’s dramatic goals can be out of reach, as with an albeit harrowing emotional subplot in the second half involving a baby, that then gets redundant with tearful monologues and sad music. It’s the kind of stuff that one hopes is sharpened if there is a season two. Let's take a look at the trailer! So for season two Jung Jin Soo is a founder of a religious cult called the New Truth, and he is back after being previously condemned to hell for several years. Upon his return, he is quick to realize the dictator of the New Truth; this time it is set to be much more extreme than before. Scary right? After being condemned to hell, Jin Soo finds out that he is not the only one who has come back to the land of living and for sure wants to find out why he is back and for what purpose. Could it be the path to true salvation? Without a doubt season two is set to have an action-packed cast with some familiar and new faces. The new faces appear in Season 2: Cheon Se Hyeong (Im Seong Jae The Worst of Evil 2023), the first person to meet the resurrected Jung; Lee Su Gyeong (Moon So Ri) the political affairs secretary who aims to use the New Truth and Park Jung Ja to restore order and balance to society; and Miss Sunshine (Moon Geun Young), a devoted Arrowhead follower. The "Gates of Hell" are opening again, according to one fan who posted on Instagram. This second series of Hellbound has captured the excitement of many fans globally! What role will these new characters play in the Hellbound universe? Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below!
