BTS Festa 2024?! That's right. We've got it covered here at Dojeon Media! Read on to find out which events and highlights will be included! I am excited to write this article, as the 2024 edition of the BTS Festa has already teased a handful of events for BTS ARMY fans. With some of their members almost finished completing their mandatory military service (Jin will be discharged this month!), this year's event will see the boys back on the stage with some of them now working on solo music such as member Jungkook ! (Please check out my other article) Check out this performance from the 2023 BTS Festa! BTS debuted on June 12, 2012, with the single album "2 Cool 4 Skool", including the title track “No More Dream.” Since then, BTS has earned numerous historical achievements, including becoming the first K-pop act to top the Billboard 100, the first Asian act to snag a Grammy nomination , and more! Since then the boy band has become famous worldwide, bringing K-pop and Korean culture to all corners of the globe! For this year's festa, Jin is set to make an appearance with several supporting acts, showcasing their careers, sketches, and sets to showcase the 11th anniversary of the mega band. That said, there has been some backlash from the ARMY fans, as merchandise for the event has come with a hefty price tag. Around 90 USD for a hoodie! That sounds insane! Check out this fan video which focuses on the festa! In addition to JK’s new song, fans can attend the "Free Hugs" event with BTS's Jin! The exclusive event will be held on June 13 at Jamsil Indoor Stadium, Seoul Sports Complex, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Lucky fans who win tickets to the free hug event will get a chance to interact directly with Jin after his military discharge. I understand why this may be meaningful to some fans, however for me personally, it seems a little cringy. However, I hope that this free hug stunt propels his success as a solo artist in the industry, as even though he has had success with a boy band, it does not necessarily mean that his success will continue as a solo artist. The mega K-band, ATEEZ , is set to return to the stage this summer and their new music video "Work" has already left fans wanting more! ATEEZ has had major success in the entertainment industry before and we are sure they will have the same this year, just in time for the summer concerts. Let's break down their teaser! Let's check out the teaser below! ATEEZ has officially returned with "Work", the title track from their 10th mini album, "Golden Hour : Part. 1" . This means that part 2 will hopefully come out towards the end of the year! Marking the beginning of a brand new series, "Golden Hour: Part. 1" embodies the brightest moments to come shortly for ATEEZ and their fans. The MV for "Work" was shot in Los Angeles, California, using dynamic and witty scenes to bring to life some of the members' wild fantasies about becoming rich and famous. For us the funny part of the teaser was of course when one of the members was riding across the desert on an ostrich, we thought it was funny and brought a sense of fun to the scene, and that they were not taking themselves too seriously. We think that the big bold yellow highlighted words that popped up on the screen kept the audience engaged in the story that the boys were trying to tell, and it reminded us a little of John Wicks movies. Lyrically we think that the boys did well and the flute and clarinet sounds added a fresh feel and sound to the song! EVERGLOW has just released stunning photos for their upcoming single "ZOMBIE"! On May 22, 2024, EVERGLOW released teaser images for their unique new concept. The members showcased silver hair in the photos, and the photos also showed the members as if they were being trapped in a hospital! Let's take a closer look! Their album will not be released until June 10th at 6 PM KST , however, in the meantime the girls will continue to release more teaser content, to help get their fans excited! I am excited to hear their comeback single as all of the members appear to have strong vocal talents, unlike some of their competitors. I also feel that the concept which the photos and teasers show is unique and interesting. EVERGLOW fans, also known as "Forever", expressed their enthusiasm for the unique and captivating concept of "Zombie". The teaser images have aroused many discussion and speculation online, leaving fans impatient to discover the new sound and the new style of the group! Check out the "Zombie" MV Prologue! "Zombie" will mark the first return of EVERGLOW since the release of their mini-album "Return of the Girl" in October 2021. The group has had considerable success since its beginnings in 2019, with popular titles such as "Dun Dun" and "Adios" . I will also say that in the teaser video, the ghost theme was a little overpowering but I can see where the girls are going with the concept, and I think it works well and makes the girls stand out more memorably compared to some of their competition. Jungkook has been voted the "most successful" BTS member according to Forbes and ARMY! Jungkook and the other members of BTS are in the middle of his mandatory service (June 11 is his discharge date). Voted the "Most Successful Member" of BTS, Jungkook is about to return to the music industry, with the upcoming digital single by Jungkook entitled “Never Let Go" , which will be released on June 7, 2024, at 1 PM KST ! Let's check out this fan reaction teaser! Commemorating the 11th anniversary of BTS’s debut, “Never Let Go” is a song dedicated to their fanbase, ARMY . The track conveys a message of appreciation and love, urging the fans to continue holding on to each other. I think that this message will be relayed to his fans who have made many speculations over the time he has been completing his military service that he has missed them and is ready to come into their lives once again. The time of year has come again, with Busan's One Asia Festival, taking place in Korea's third largest city, Busan, between Saturday, June 8 , and Sunday, June 9, 2024 ! Here is everything you need to know for this weekend's festivities! When I heard that there was going to be this amazing event, I was so excited, because this year's event promises to promote a Cultural Playland where attendees can enjoy a variety of performances, content, and exhibitions with an emphasis on K-pop! Attendees will also be able to watch live K-pop groups on stage. How cool is that?! Since Busan did not win the 2030 World Expo, it still shows the city as a world-stage player for major events, which tourists both domestically and internationally can enjoy. I really wish that I was able to attend the event myself this year, as the event will showcase a variety of K-pop performances from different generations to enable it to be an event for multiple generations which I think is really exciting. Also hosting the event in Korea for all things K-pop since the K-culture industry has literally exploded in the past couple of years is a really smart move. Lots of close by Asian countries will be able to travel easily to Busan to enjoy the event. HYBE and Belift Lab's ILLIT has hit the internet as a global sensation with their first single "Magnetic" with over 86 million views on YouTube! "Magnetic" also broke into Billboard's Top 100 at 91 in April! Everyone can agree that their music is good, and their choreography looks fresh. But some Korean netizens have been triggered by ILLIT's costumes claiming they are "too childish" and serve a certain otaku audience. Let's dive into their concerns! Many Korean netizens have criticized the group for being "too skinny" and the clothes/costumes look "too childish" resembling a Japanese pop group. The word for this type of obsession or fetish is "otaku". According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "otaku" is "a person having an intense or obsessive interest, especially in the fields of anime and manga." Everyone knows that HYBE's chairman, Bang Si Hyuk , is a fan of otaku and he himself has expressed his interest in the genre multiple times. Could ILLIT be his "experiment" for otaku? Some Korean netizens have expressed their opinions online about ILLIT's costumes and live gestures. "NewJeans otaku version made by Bang Si Hyuk." "It's like baby clothes..." "It (the costumes) are too revealing." Looking at ILLIT's costumes/outfits during their performances, you can see what Korean netizens are picking about. The skirts are a little short and the "otaku" concept is a little "old school" and overdone by their Japanese pop counterparts. However, there are many fans who would beg to differ and voiced their opinions countering the above comments. The BBC (British Broadcasting Co-operation) broadcast Burning Sun , a documentary about secret chat groups of prominent K-pop stars that provided false information. More details surface as we dive into what happened during this infamous K-pop scandal! Since the documentary aired, KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) released a statement on May 22, 2024, based on the BBC providing some wrong information. The BBC confirmed that the legal advice received by Jung Joon Young’s ex-girlfriend did not come from a KBS lawyer but from independent counsel, she sought herself. She said clarification was included in the BBC’s official communication to KBS early in the morning, Korean time. The BBC has since removed the incorrect content from the documentary and has publicized these corrections on their platforms. KBS also mentioned that the BBC explained this error was due to their oversight, not the fault of the interviewed reporter, Park Hyo Sil. The TV documentary “Burning Sun – Exposed the Secrets of K-pop chat groups” was gripping, and it was not surprising with the power play that the K-pop stars were accused of and also seen to be doing and bragging about in their chat groups, as I also work in the same industry. Thanks to Seoul-based reporters, Park Hyo Sil and Kang Kyung Yoon, whose journalism revealed, at a huge personal cost, horrific sex abuse committed by seemingly wholesome heartthrobs of the K-pop world, it shows a dark side of the Korean entertainment industry, success, money, power and connections, which is why the stars got away with their crimes for far too long. Overview: In 2019, new allegations about Jung’s actions surfaced. In 2016, he had left his phone with a forensics company during the police investigation. Three years later, an anonymous informant with access to it decided to leak it. It reached Kang Kyung Yoon, an entertainment reporter with Korea's largest broadcaster, SBS. She was about to finish what Park had started. The data contained Jung’s chat messages from KakaoTalk , a messaging app, from 2015 and 2016. “My heart still hurts when I think of that,” Kang says as she found sexually explicit videos and images of unconscious women, which involved Jung and other male K-pop stars. Among them was Choi Jong Hoon , lead guitarist of rock band FT Island . One exchange contained details of the gang rape of an unconscious woman, by Jung, Choi, and others. As Kang looked through the phone, she spotted clues which hinted at why this group felt above the law – some messages implied they were being protected by a senior police contact. The BBC Eye documentary shows how the celebrities’ seemingly untouchable status started to unravel, and Kang’s role in this as she went to press, exposing the behavior of the chat-group members. Taking her rightful place back in the spot light, former (G)I-DLE member, Soojin , gives us a glimpse of the mesmerizing choreography for "MONA LISA" in her music video teaser! Let's take a look at all the details! If you didn't already know, Soojin used to be part of the K-pop band (G)I-DLE before going solo in 2023, with "AGASSY" which was her debut as a solo artist. " AGASSY" was a song high on atmosphere and low on substance. That description could match many K-pop tracks of the last two years or so, and the new single "Mona Lisa" also fits within this realm. On May 23, 2024, we saw the release of Soojin's comeback "Mona Lisa" music video teaser, which has been highly anticipated by her fans. Was it worth the wait? Let's check out the teaser video below! Now for me, I have to be honest and say that the performance was visually stunning, however, I did find the title track a little underwhelming although it was catchy. Speaking of momentum, I did notice that there was a pretty cool part to the song near the end where the instrumental took center stage and the guitar did finally bring back a much-needed dynamic punch to the song. It’s much too little, too late, but this demonstrates how compelling production might have elevated an uninspired song Take a look at the full M/V! Le Sserafim just posted a new promotional poster with their new collaboration with American whiskey and wine spirit brand Jim Beam, but one member is missing! Where is Eunchae? We break down how Le Sserafim is now the center of another controversial topic and more! Fresh off their disastrous Coachella performance that had the world questioning the authenticity of K-pop music, Le Sserafim just posted a new poster of themselves promoting an alcoholic beverage brand! As you can see, the youngest member Eunchae , is not on the poster because she is still a minor (born in 2006). Just at the height of South Korea's most famous university festivals (from April - May) where many K-pop groups are invited to perform, Le Sserafim has yet to be invited to one. The younger version of Blackpink , Babymonster, has recently dropped the teaser for "Like That" , their new title track. The sudden drop of the teaser has left fans on social media overwhelmed and the feedback has been really positive so far! Let's check out the teaser clip below! In the teaser clip, the group shows off their classic chic style and somewhat sophisticated tone, of their B-side track that was composed by Charlie Puth . For me, I really like the modern vibe of the video, mixed with the classic black-and-white concept for their image. I also thought it was a fairly cinematic concept focused on each member's individuality. Although I look forward to getting to know the band more in the future, I think having seven members in the group might be too many. It has also been announced recently, that Babymonster granted an interview in which they talked about their first EP, their "monstrous" skills, and their ambition to become "artists who can exert a great influence".
