Although the Chuseok holiday is upon Korea this weekend, the country weathered the strongest storm in the nation’s history when Super Typhoon Hinnamnor hammered its southern coastal areas earlier this week. ● Since when was Chuseok celebrated? Korea was an agricultural country until the beginning of the 20th century, and it also used the traditional lunar calendar. Therefore, Korea was witnessing many events in which the country wished for an abundant harvest. These events developed into traditional holidays, festivals, and folkloric beliefs held according to the lunar calendar. ● What is the Chuseok holiday in Korea? Are US K-pop fans disengaging, reflected in the recent drop in K-pop album sales? We discuss this ongoing issue and how we think K-pop might bounce back during the second half of 2025! In a recent survey, data have shown that US album sales for K-pop music are perhaps losing their spark among young fans. This has triggered a hot debate within the K-pop industry, and it has left many asking if the K-pop push into the Western market is perhaps hitting a snag, or whether or not fans are changing how they decide to engage with their favorite K-pop idols. From January to April this year, K-pop album sales have seen a downward spiral for the first time, as only 23.4 million albums were sold, a massive 26% drop compared to the same time last year. This now marks a two-year milestone in sales dropping, since the peak in 2023, where 32.7 million units were sold. Due to the recent cost of living crisis. K-pop fans are changing their spending habits. Even with album sales dipping, big Korean entertainment companies are making more money, thanks to a boom in overseas concerts. The industry should now focus on creating fresh content that offers new sights and sounds for fans, in a new bid to retain K-pop fans and steady their income and profits. Where Are the New K-Pop Global Hits? New K-pop global mega-hits were missing from the charts over the past year, which could also be a reason for the reduction in K-pop sales in the US. Out of Spotify's top 2,500 most-streamed songs worldwide last year, only 25 were K-pop tracks. Even then, BTS dominated the list with 16 songs, and BLACKPINK followed with nine, counting both group and solo releases. This means fresh K-pop tracks struggled to break into the top ranks, due to being less known and represented outside of their native Korea, and also having to compete with US household names. Did Internal Drama Hurt Sales? The ongoing drama between former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin and HYBE executives concerning NewJeans  is also being eyed as a factor impacting album sales. This is because public opinion on this matter among K-pop fans globally was very intense. Money talks, and people have too much going on in their own lives to get involved with the pettiness of NewJeans and Min Hee Jin. The very public dispute shined a light on issues like intense competition for first-week sales, fans buying huge amounts of albums just for signing events, and over-the-top album release strategies. This has led to a more cautious approach to marketing across the industry. Can K-pop Bounce Back And Save Its US Following? Good news for K-pop fans worldwide! Despite the recent dip in album sales, mainly in the US, the second half of the year could see a major comeback. Get ready for new music from huge groups like BLACKPINK , ATEEZ , aespa, TXT , and Stray Kids ! And the biggest buzz of all? Big Hit Music , has partnered with Korean Music platform Melon to create their own radio series titled ‘BIGHIT Music Record.’ It launched on May 21, the very same day, that the label's Grammy-nominated music group, BTS , will be releasing their second English single 'Butter'. The show is set to feature several K-pop artists that are signed with the music company but will begin its very first show with BTS. Radio platform Melon announced that it will host BTS every Friday for 4 weeks, in which they will talk about their upcoming album "Proof" and their music over the years. South Korea has officially announced a mourning period for the victims and families due to the tragedy in Itaewon that happened on Saturday, October 29 around 22:00 KST. President Yoon Suk Yeol announced in a press conference on Sunday that the Seoul crowd crush resulted in over 150 casualties and at least 82 people injured. The period of national mourning will go from Sunday, October 30 until Saturday, November 5. Numerous K-pop and fashion events scheduled to happen this week were either canceled or delayed in respect for those who lost their lives. One of the biggest K-pop festivals, the 2022 Busan One Asia Festival, scheduled for October 30 was also canceled. Acts like Brave Girls, MAMAMOO , and LE SSERAFIM were scheduled to perform. Fashion house, Gucci, was originally scheduled to have their “Cosmognie” collection at Gyeongbokgung Palace on November 1, but announced that the show is now canceled. They took to social media to make the announcement stating: " We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who have been affected by the tragedy in Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea." K-pop entertainment company SM Entertainment, deleted all announcements for their “SMTOWN WONDERLAND 2022” Halloween party that was planned for Oct. 30 and would have featured a live stream and red carpet event to feature its artists in costume. The management company is home to powerhouse acts such as Super Junior , Girls' Generation , NCT , and Aespa . Multiple tv appearances, live-streams, fan events, video premieres have all been canceled throughout the Korean entertainment industry for at least the up-coming week. For a long time now, Hongdae has been a popular destination for locals and tourists alike when they visit Seoul. This article will focus on why Hongdae should be on your MUST-do list for places to visit in Seoul this year! What can I say, Hongdae is a cultural and culinary destination that is not to be missed on your trip to Seoul. Many Korean celebrities can also be spotted here occasionally, and the area has also been featured in many travel series, dramas, and music videos ! Hongdae has so much going for it, not only is it located in central Seoul, it has a variety of clubs, bars, restaurants, and street performances, not to mention the thrift stores and photoshops! Due to its foreigner-friendly atmosphere, Hongdae has not only attracted many international visitors, but also locals. I have visited the area countless times, especially when I lived in Seoul. For me, it is one of the places where you can get Western food, and there is a great Mexican restaurant, though if you are after something more local, then KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) and beer will be around on most streets! In the afternoon on weekends, and during the evenings, you will also notice lots of buskers and street performers playing to crowds, which for me makes the atmosphere feel alive! Located nearby are some of the major universities in Seoul, and as a result it offers a younger demographic. Regardless of your taste in music or food, there will be a place for you to go. I recently discovered a rooftop bar that boasted a large cocktail menu and offered a fantastic view of the city. If you are like me, and you like people watching, then you will be in for a treat! At the end of the night, it is obligatory to visit one of the areas many photo studios. For me this concept is strange as these days everybody has a smart phone. however the fun loving feel good concept is a great factor, and I think it's great to try on all of the different costumes and accessories and not to mention the price is cheap as well.
