K-pop girl group NewJeans are the new ambassadors for Korea Tourism! (Skift) Everyone seems to see Korea as the world of K-pop and kimchi , and although these two things are popular here, you really must look past that. You should see Seoul as a futuristic, safe, and modern city, and the first place to explore when you visit Korea. It’s a starkly modern metropolis with a man-made river winding through its core. It makes sense to start your trip to South Korea here — flight connections are good, and the city’s scope of experiences acts as an introduction to Korean culture , with the main airport being Incheon, which is easily accessible by airport express buses and trains to the city, as well as Seoul's subway link. Tips for a first-time trip to Korea! Seoul, South Korea is a beautiful but massive city with so much to see, it’s almost impossible to decide what to do on a short trip there. I spent one year living in the capital, and I now go there regularly for work, but even I have not seen everything that Seoul has to offer. It can feel overwhelming when you first arrive but we spent the day coming up with a great itinerary to get acquainted with the city without trying to do too many things in one day, and even by taking the subway, it can feel that you have not seen everything, as there are many lines and connections. Photo: Seoul, Korea. Tommyooi Be sure to buy a subway card which can be purchased at any convenience store and topped up. You can use this on subways, and buses and even to purchase food in convenience stores throughout Korea. This will make your trip hassle-free. Throughout Seoul, many alleys connect a series of shops, boutiques, and restaurants . I have noticed in the evening there were are lines to get in some restaurants, which seems to be part of Korean restaurant culture. There are some well-known popular restaurants around here. You come, you line up, you wait for your table. I've never seen so many line-ups for restaurants in any place I have ever been. Photo: Seoul nightscape Korea - Images Of course, a must-do in Seoul and located near City Hall is a walk across the river. This is the perfect place for some tranquility, rest time, and photos in the heart of the city. So far, this city is an amazing mix of modern meets historic. It feels like a surprise everywhere. One thing we always love in big cities is when they mix in nature like this. You have nature, you have a river. It looks to be a man-made and groomed-out city. The skyline in the background makes for an exceptional city, and a mix of old and new, which for me is great. Make sure you're insured everywhere you go! Visit SafteyWing  for more details on how you can protect yourself and your loved ones whenever you travel! Whenever I go to a new city, I really want to spend time with the locals, local areas, and really immerse myself in the sightseeing that the city has to offer. A big part of this is the food and wandering the streets. Seoul is the perfect place for first-time travelers to Asia, as it is very safe, modern, and clean which makes it an attractive contender for 2024, not to mention the visa-free travel arrangements that Korea has hosted with several countries. • Guide to Enjoy Seoul International Fireworks Festival 2023! Happening This Weekend!

The Seoul International Fireworks Festival is an annual event that lights up the night sky over the picturesque Han River, and this year's edition promises to be a spectacular show you won't want to miss! Scheduled for Saturday, October 7, 2023 , at Yeouido Han River Park , it's the perfect opportunity for a memorable evening with friends and family. To make the most of this dazzling event, follow our guide for a fantastic experience! Fireworks over the Han River is a sight to behold! 1. Arrive Early for Prime Viewing The "I Seoul U" sculpture makes for a great location to view the fireworks! (Seoul Metropolitan City) If you're eager to secure a prime spot for the fireworks show, plan to arrive early, around 2 PM. This will give you ample time to choose the perfect location without any obstructions to your view. Some of the best places to secure early are the Multi-Plaza in Yeouido Han River Park and Ichon Han River Park. 2. Bring a Gimbal for Steady Shots Gimbals are great for hand held steady shots! (NY Times) For those looking to capture the breathtaking fireworks on camera, consider bringing a gimbal. This device will help you achieve complete stillness, ensuring your footage is as beautiful as the display itself. Don't forget to charge your camera or smartphone in advance! 3. Rent a Picnic Mat for Comfort Picnic mats are available for purchase or rent near the "I Seoul U" sculpture! (GoBizKorea.com) While you wait for the fireworks to light up the sky, comfort is key. You can rent picnic mats at the vendors, with prices typically ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 won and a deposit of 5,000 won for unlimited hours of use. Additionally, bring along an extra coat or blanket to keep warm, as temperatures tend to drop rapidly in the evening during autumn. 4. Stay Hygienic with Wet Tissues and Hand Sanitizer With large crowds gathering for the festival, it's wise to be prepared for personal hygiene. Pack wet tissues and hand sanitizer to keep clean and refreshed while waiting for the main event. It's a small but essential step to ensure your comfort during the festivities. 5. Patience Pays Off Large crowds make it difficult to leave right away, so why not enjoy the fall night breeze a little more? (KoreabyMe) As the fireworks show concludes, keep in mind that a significant crowd will be dispersing from the venue. Rather than rushing to leave immediately, take the opportunity to enjoy the pleasant autumn breeze while waiting for the crowd to thin out. This way, you can avoid the rush and make your exit in a more relaxed manner. The Seoul International Fireworks Festival is not just a visual delight; it's an experience that brings people together to celebrate the beauty of the night sky. By following these tips, you can ensure that your visit to this dazzling event in Yeouido Han River Park is comfortable, enjoyable, and unforgettable. • Want to see a spectacular summer sunset in Seoul? Head to Banpo Bridge! Here's why!

For decades Banpo Bridge in the heart of Seoul has been a popular place to watch the sunset down on the Han River , and here is why you should make it a must-do when you visit Seoul! Banpo Bridge is a very famous K-drama location! Recently, I visited Banpo Park with my family when they were visiting and I have to say I was taken away by the amount of people there, as well as the sunset and photo opportunities! Whenever I get time in Seoul this park is a must-go on my list of things to do, and it should be for you too! Photo: Banpo Bridge Seoul - Lewis & Matthew Hooper Not only is the park located right in central Seoul, but it has over time become a popular park for tourists and locals alike. There are plenty of parks along the Han River where you can watch the spectacular sunset, however, this Han River park offers something very unique, which of course is the nightly Rainbow fountain. Once the sun set's the water fall flows over the side of the bridge and with the spot lights it creates a sensational rainbow effect which of course is perfect for the memory bank and photo album! Plenty of people head down to the park for a picnic, and you can also purchase food and drink at the continence store, and sometimes locals come around selling pizza and chicken depending on what you want! Photo: Banpo Bridge Seoul - Lewis Hooper & Callam Hele Occasionally you will see street performances and buskers which make the evening even more special and memorable (at least for me). I will say that if you do want to get a decent view then it's advisable to arrive at the park early in order to find a space to sit down as it does get very busy, even more so on the weekend. It truly is a special moment when the lights come on and the music beats faster and louder as it takes you to another place and makes you forget about everything that is going on and have and feel a sense of enjoyment! Photo: Banpo Bridge Park Seoul - Lewis Hooper Also, along the river and park, there are a couple of restaurants and you can also take some boat tours. If you are brave enough, then you can go on a jet ski, though you will get very wet as it does go under the bridge even when the fountains are on! From time to time special events are held at the park as well such as silent discos, markets, and food stalls, so there is always plenty to see and do, in this unordinary park right in the center of the mega city of Seoul. For more information about visiting the park and how to get there, check out the link below: https://www.koreatodo.com/banpo-bridge-rainbow-fountain Make sure you're insured everywhere you go! • These are the best places to go stargazing in South Korea!

Summertime is the best time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors! Many Koreans opt for camping or "glamping", so why not kick your feet up and look up to see the stars? We give you the best places to go stargazing in South Korea! Photo: Stargazing in South Korea. - Images. If you are anything like me, I really love watching the stars at night. I think it's not only peaceful but also romantic and imaginative. With the universe so big, do we really know what's out there? Sadly, as most of us live in a city these days it can be really hard to see the stars in the sky at night, so where can you see the stars in South Korea? I was fortunate to see the stars in the sky when I visited a small town off the beaten track in Gangwon province , the town was called Inje. Here I took part in a stargazing class, and we also used telescopes and looked at different patterns with the stars, and their meaning, and found out the estimated distances! Since then, I have really wanted to see the night sky again, but I have not had the chance. Aside from Inje, an administrative region, Anbandegi is part of the eastern city of Gangneung , which is close to the Olympic town of Pyeongchang . As you travel beyond the vicinity of Yongpyong Resort (which is popular for winter sports), the road narrows from two lanes in either direction and becomes a real rural road, without a streetlight to be found. Sounds perfect right? Photo: Taebaek Mountains - Korea - Images Located on a rugged ridge of the Taebaek Mountains at an altitude of 1,100 meters, this area is like one big cabbage field. The name “Anbandegi” comes from a combination of the local Gangneung terms “anban,” referring to a broad, concave wooden board used for pounding rice cakes, and “degi,” meaning flat ground. This place has been said to be one of the best spots in the country for stargazing. The best times to look at the Milky Way are roughly between April and September. The rainy season from late June to July is not good viewing weather, so those who’d like to camp under the stars are advised to plan for a visit either between early April and mid-June or between August and September, so if you go outside of this time it will be perfect for looking at the night sky. K-drama poster "Where Stars Land" (SBS TV) Seoul, Daegu , and Busan for that matter, have lots of light pollution, and therefore it is hard to see stars in the sky, no matter what time of year it is. I really love escaping to the countryside as I feel it is good to connect with nature and experience things for free or a cheap price, depending on where you go and how long you stay. Of course, depending on how long you come to Korea it may not be possible to head out of the big cities, however, I really recommend it for a more real experience. I can say for sure that some of the best memories that I have had have been in the countryside with the locals! Make sure you're insured everywhere you go! • Are young Koreans falling out of love with Jeju Island? We find out!

Are young Koreans falling out of love with Jeju Island ? This is the question that many people are asking after a dramatic fall in visitor numbers this summer. Let's find out why this is the case! Photo: Jeju International Airport - images. The summer of 2024 has seen a big drop in tourist numbers heading to the Korean Island of Jeju. There are several reasons for this, however in my opinion a big factor is that the Japanese Yen has fallen, which makes it more attractive for Koreans to travel to Japan than Jeju, since the cost of living is significantly cheaper in Japan at the moment. This has however impacted many of Jeju's hotels, bars and restaurants forcing them to close or put their prices up, which in turn, puts people off of going to those establishments. In turn, this has had a devastating effect on the economy. This is not the first time Jeju has experienced a drop in numbers, as COVID-19 suspended all but essential travel, though local governments were hoping to get back to pre-pandemic numbers. Jeju's majestic Seongsan Ilchulbong or "Sunrise Peak" volcano (Wikipedia) For me, I have to say that although the island is beautiful and the beaches are stunning, the prices sadly are expensive. I have been to the island a couple of times, and I was imagining that it would be like Tenerife or Lanzarote, however, the nighlife was non-existent and you needed a car to drive around the island with little to no public transportation. There has been a surge in the number of foreign visitors to Jeju. But they tend to stay at big hotels, many of which have business deals with travel agencies that bring them to the island through their package programs therefore staying in the resort means little to no time or desire to spend money in local businesses. For young Koreans, the ability and appeal to travel to a foreign country outside of Korea, to experience a new culture and customs is more desirable. The flights though more expensive than going to Jeju, are a competitive price and once at the destination the living cost and hotel costs are cheaper. I have also looked at heading to Jeju this year and the drawback for me along with many young Koreans is the living cost is higher in Jeju than in mainland Korea. In addition, the amount of low-cost flights to international destinations are more appealing in comparison. For overseas visitors, Jeju does offer visa-free travel for many countries, which otherwise require a visa before traveling to the mainland such as India, so it still offers an attractive place to visit with fewer restrictions and at the same time still being able to offer an authentic Korean experience. Photo: Jeju's blackpig - Lewis Hooper Jeju does still hold a charm for Koreans, and as it's known as the "Hawaii of Asia", it offers are unforgettable getaway. You will notice in my other article about ( Hamdeok Beach ) the pristine waters and special places to visit. Not to mention the more tropical temperatures and the vast amount of oranges that are on offer there and the famous delicious black pork! Will the drop in tourism numbers continue? Or will they bounce back? Make sure you're insured everywhere you go! Visit SafteyWing  for more details on how you can protect yourself and your loved ones whenever you travel! Let us know your thoughts on why Jeju is becoming less popular with young Koreans in the comments below . #youngadults #Jeju #travel #asia #traveldestination #Yeji #itzy

  • This majestic K-drama fortress is only 1 hour away from Seoul! Here's why you need to visit!

South Korea is filled with beautiful cultural artifacts and locations. Just an hour away from Seoul, is Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress . We give you our reasons why this K-drama location is a must-visit next time you're in the area! Photo: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress - Lewis Hooper Suwon is a small city outside of Seoul, though it is connected by the subway line right to central Seoul, and it takes around 1 hour. This should be reason enough for you to head to Hwaseong Fortress this fall! Whenever I visit a new country, I love to experience the culture, history, and smaller cities. This helps me to gain a better understanding of the country, people, and of course, mindset. Hwaseong Fortress's crazy story! T he true story behind the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress could be the plot for a period K-drama. I’ll try to keep it short for this post, but if you want to read more about the history and all the juicy details of affairs, illegitimate children, violence, and literal madness, there’s tons of information out there, and boy is it interesting! In short, during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty , there was a king by the name of King Yeongjo. He had a son, Prince Sado, who was heir to the throne and held up to his father’s high expectations. It seemed that no matter what Prince Sado did, he could never please his father. His father reprimanded him publicly and refused to let him visit the ancestral graves of people who died, whom the Prince was close to. Prince Sado’s mental health deteriorated over the years and he became increasingly violent. He would have outbursts of rage, violently rape women, and beat his servants, wife, and consort. It is recorded that he beat his secondary consort so badly that she was left to die on the floor. This photogenic fortress is one of the origins, where Prince Sado started to become mentally ill, from the age of 10 where he started to experience delusions and nightmares while staying in the fortress. Were these due to his fathers mistreatment and ridicule? Or were these due to the fortress itself? The best way to see the fortress is by walking along the walls. There is plenty of signage along the walls so you can learn more about what you are seeing. It also offers views of the city. We recommend taking a few hours to walk along the walls. We didn’t walk the entire length, but instead went from Paldalmun Gate to Hwahongmun Gate and were able to enjoy, learn a lot, and see some of the key highlights of the fortress. To reach the walls, you’ll have to walk up a steep incline of stairs to reach the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Seonam Ammun Gate . If someone is at the ticket booth, you might have to pay 1,000 KRW for adults, but a person isn’t always there. You may see other checkpoints along the way where you will have to pay and worth the price! Hwaseong Fortress in K-dramas! Recognizable in the hit series Twenty-five Twenty-One (2022), it is one of the pivotal filming locations for the story! The specific location of the location is the Southern Artillery Pavilion . Check it out! "Twenty-Five Twenty-One" still (tvN) And in real life... Southern Artillery Pavilion Visitors stroll along Suwon Hwaseong Fortress' walking trail near the Southern Artillery Pavilion in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, Monday. (Lee Si-jin/The Korea Herald) This really is a MUST-DO when you visit Korea this year! Not only, does it allow you to gain a better understanding of Korean culture and history, but it also allows you to recharge and take some time outside of the mega city that is Seoul! • Solo Traveler’s Guide to South Korea [Best vibes, dining, and must-have apps] From Locals!

Thinking of traveling to South Korea alone this year? Not sure where to start? Don't worry, this guide has you covered! Image: thebrokebackpacker.com So why visit South Korea? South Korea is an Asian nation, that has became a house hold name in recent years, from the popular K-drama Squid Game to the biggest boy band in the world, BTS , Korea's pop culture trends are not slowing down. Beyond it's cool bustling capital city of Seoul you will also be able to see thriving traditional markets , palaces , ancient temples and magnificent mountain ranges with Korea's very distinct four seasons. There really is something for everyone! So what is the vibe like for solo travelers? South Korea is a fairly small nation, and therefore it has great high speed connections by bus and train. There are plenty of homestays and reasonably priced hotels to solo budgets, and while English is not always spoken, people here are helpful and welcoming. In Seoul and other major cities like Busan and Daegu the subway connections and buses are efficient, inexpensive and clean, not to mention safe. Taxies are also very cheap here compared to the US and Europe. Solo female travelers shouldn’t experience any undue hassles. Just exercise the same caution you would in any unfamiliar place. Eating and drinking for solo travelers Nationwide, expect a lively dining scene, and specialties you won’t find anywhere else. This is something that you will miss when you are gone for sure, and it definitely makes your stay more enjoyable, and a great way to meet people. Among the most popular is Korean barbecue , a DIY affair, and even better, you cook your own meat on a table grill, to devour alongside banchan (side dishes including pickles, salads and fermented kimchi). Another favorite is Korean fried chicken , normally washed down with plenty of draft beer or rice wine. In markets or casual restaurants, you’ll find tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), savoury pancakes and hearty stews. Among the quirkier options is budae-jjigae , or “army stew”, a mashup of Korean and American ingredients including Spam, baked beans, kimchi and instant noodles. You’ll either love it or hate it, either way it is something to try on your travels. Convenience stores also offer cheap options for solo travelers, and I have to say that the quality is very good. Inside the the stores you can find microwaves, ramen machines to heat your food, and many locals often eat here. Staying safe and local Google Maps is ineffective, especially when trying to plan routes. Instead, try Citymapper or the local app Naver . Seoul is a spread-out city and, while the subway network is good, stations can be far apart – minimize your travel time by basing yourself near a well-connected hub. How long should I spend in South Korea? It is possible to do South Korea in as little as a week, though you will find yourself not having time to really take in the beauty and culture in that time. However, with ten to fourteen days, you will be "wowed", from the electrifying buzz in the historic yet modern capital, and the beautiful peaceful coastal regions. Start your trip in Seoul, and immerse yourself in shopping, karaoke, various dining options, and of course, the epic royal palaces, before heading outside of the capital. You can visit the ancient capital of Korea, which is in the south of the country, called Gyeongju , which is home to the most important temples. Bulguksa is on the Unesco World Heritage list. https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/top-8-fun-historical-activities-you-don-t-want-to-miss-in-gyeongju-2024-regardless-of-your-budget End up in Busan. It’s half beach resort, half working port, and another insight into South Korea. Got more time? Hit scenic Jeju Island for hiking and beaches and Sokcho in the North Eastern part of Korea, where the beaches are unspoiled, and in this area, you will also be able to catch a glimpse of North Korea from the less touristic DMZ area . https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/a-brit-s-stay-in-the-hawaii-of-south-korea-jeju-island-and-why-you-need-to-see-it-for-yourself Need more ideas and activities as a solo traveler?
