Ji Chang Wook is one of the best Korean actors to date and his stellar acting in The K2 proves it! Romance is secondary in this drama but very addictive too! It may be the absolute worst romantic scene ever in a K-Drama or any drama. While the main romance is, at times, painful, the show is still fascinating, thanks to the two main leads (and I'm not talking about the annoying Snow White character An Na). Rather, K2 is all about Yoo Jin and Je Ha. It has a compelling storyline and leaves you hanging multiple times. With fast turnaround times, a high burnout rate, and intense training that is possibly endangering K-pop idols' health, we at Dojeon Media want to know: "Is the K-pop model sustainable?" We break down some key elements in the "K-pop model" to see if K-pop is in it for the long run! Questions have arisen about the long-term viability of the current K-pop system, with its intense training, rapid debut cycles, and high burnout rates among idols. Discussions focus on the need for more sustainable practices. The more I have looked into K-pop during my time in Korea, and the longer I have worked in the entertainment industry, I have concluded that everything in K-pop is fast, and it has something to do with how oversaturated and competitive the market is. Fans have come to expect at least 2 comebacks per year from groups, not to mention all of the other schedules (variety shows, end-of-year performances, etc.) that the more popular groups have. I think the K-pop industry has created a system for its artists where burnout is inevitable (if you do it long enough and at the same pace with no significant breaks). Or sadly, you will just get replaced or forgotten about. Unless you reach a certain level of fame and can have some say over the pace of your schedule, I imagine it gets exhausting after 7 or so years (not even including time spent as a trainee ). I can't imagine the stress, especially for the more introverted idols. I feel so bad when there are statements saying they have to withdraw due to anxiety, but idols have to go back to performing and putting on a show and a positive front for the cameras. So can the K-pop industry be sustainable in the future? Let's take a look at some of the factors why I think that the K-pop industry is not sustainable in the future: Rigorous Training and Management: K-pop trainees undergo an extremely intensive training process, often for several years, before debuting as an idol. This training installs strong discipline, work ethic, and coping mechanisms to handle the intense demands of the idol lifestyle. K-pop entertainment companies also tend to have very regimented management systems to oversee and support their artists. For example, take a look at Ruka's (BAYBYMONSTER) 10-year journey from trainee to debut ! Tightly-Knit Team Dynamics: K-pop groups are typically comprised of multiple members who experience the idol lifestyle together. This provides a built-in support system and sense of camaraderie that can help idols cope with the pressures they face. The team dynamic is a core part of the K-pop model. However, most of the time this is just fronted and members in any band (worldwide) tend to have negative dynamics with other members. Protective Fanbase: K-pop fans, known as "fandoms" , tend to be extremely dedicated and protective of their idols. Idols receive a tremendous amount of emotional support and encouragement from their fanbase, which can help mitigate feelings of isolation and burnout. I feel like burnout in less than 10 years for artists who are at least semi-successful isn’t normal in the Western music industry (I can’t speak to other industries). I know that fans like to complain about mismanagement and lack of company promotion (Which I have written about in a previous article ), which is absolutely a factor in idols deciding to not renew contracts/leave the industry/focus on other career goals like acting, but I also feel like some of them are probably just tired of it all, and therefore I think with this current rate, the K-pop industry without significant changes can be sustainable in the future. Watching Episode 11 gave us a lot of feels! We felt justice, joy, sadness, relief, and suspense! First of all, if you haven't read our other Castaway Diva articles you should check those out on our site! This article is mainly about episode 11 but has some spoilers of episode 12 too, so be mindful if you haven't watched yet! We will write another article about episode 12! Episode 11: RECAP Episode 11 was packed with revelations and major plot points! Namely, Yoon Ran Joo and Seo Mok Ha's press conference, Yoon Ran Joo's interaction with Kim Jun Heon, and how he claimed that she was the "trash" RJ Entertainment had to get rid of to succeed (despite the company being named after her), Yoon Ran Joo's mother passing away, the court proceedings for identity theft, the results of the hearing for the identity theft, the insurance man and Ki Ho's school friend AKA Dae Woong surviving, the Kang Sang Du (the real dad) getting stabbed and of course the KISS! Wow, that's a lot! So we decided to cover each final episode with its own article! This is the article for episode 11! JUSTICE is Served What stood out for us in this episode was the justice served at the hearing for the family's identity theft. Of course, we knew that the adoptive father Kang Sang Du was a good person, he helped a family he didn't even know and essentially saved their lives! He also showed the integrity of his character by reporting himself before Jung Bong Wan could do any more damage. You can see that he really treasures and loves his family. This also, really shows that you don't have to be related to really love the people you meet in life which is a beautiful thing! The Justice of the Hearing: Realizations and Bitterness After having watched many K-dramas and seeing villainous characters succeed (maybe we've seen that a bit in real life too) it was so satisfying to see the prosecutor doing the cross-examination see the truth of the matter - but you kind of do wonder as well if this happens as much in real life. Anyway, for us it was a very weighted, yet pleasant surprise that he could see through Jung Bong Wan's supposed "love" for his family. It made us a little angry as well the way he referred to his family throughout the series, as if they were his property and that they needed to be "punished" to restart. What nonsense. The Stab: Desperation and Doom It's nice when the mother Song Ha Jeong narrates at the end - and you can see that the family overall turned out better as they were forgiving. The mother handing the umbrella to Jung Bong Wan, despite them knowing he tried to murder someone? Or maybe she didn't know at that moment but we thought it was crazy! Also, it is so true that people choose what they want in life and it's either they can forgive or just be peaceful and move on or they stay bitter and cling to the negative only to keep falling down and eventually hitting the bottom, as did Jung Bong Wan - he didn't love his family, he just couldn't get his "property" back and didn't see the error in his ways. There was no turning back for him. So he stabs Kang Sang Du thinking that he would have some sort of disturbing justice, and ends his own life so his wife had to remain his wife forever, he was just so bitter, it consumed him. Anyway, we are glad that Kang Sang-du survived and is thriving in Dramaland! We don't know what we would have done if he passed! THE KISS Sunshine-filled, joyous, and happy. For us that was definitely one of the warmest, most wholesome K-Drama kisses we have seen! There's not much more to say about it. The Korean hotspots of Busan, Daejeon, and Sokcho were all featured in series 4 of the popular BBC series Race Across the World. If you have not watched this show yet, then you absolutely should! This British TV show is now in its fourth season, and sees contestants travel around the world from a starting destination to an end destination with checkpoints along the way! Sounds easy? Well, contestants are not allowed to take any flights and have to travel by rail, road, or sea, with the amount of money that it would cost to travel by air. In the latest episode, the teams had to reach their second checkpoint in the seaside city of Sokcho in South Korea, and they all had to balance speed and potential work opportunities along the way. With their previous checkpoint in Nara, Japan. The largest port city, Busan was, of course, featured in this episode as contestants traveled from Fukuoka, Japan to Busan, Korea and the center of Korea, Daejeon, was also featured! In Busan, one group of contestants picked up work at the world-famous Jagalchi Fish Market. You can see the feature of Korea around 29 minutes into the episode on BBC or through YouTube. Coming from the UK, I found it extremely interesting to see like-minded reactions to South Korea and Korean culture, especially with the fish market and cultural differences between the two countries.
