Taeil and the K-pop industry?

The K-pop world has been shaken up in recent months, Moon Taeil who used to be a member of NCT a popular Korean group, admitted to some very serious charges this week at one of his many court hearings. The Dojeon team have previously written about the awful allegations of the actions of the former K-pop star.

SM Entertainment's Move

You might remember back in August 2024 when NCT's agency, SM Entertainment, announced that Taeil was leaving the group. At the time, they only said he was involved in a "criminal case related to a sexual offense." The situation was clearly dire, and by October last year, SM Entertainment completely ended his contract as the investigation continued. SM took every step within their power to walk away from the former NCT member carefully, not to tarnish the group's reputation and their own. Now, with Taeil's admission in court, the legal process is moving forward, and the outcome will be a prison sentence.

Courtroom Showdown

In what could be seen by many as a chilling confession by the former NCT member, three separate individual cases, the former star committed a shocking and disgusting crime raping a heavily intoxicated Chinese woman in Seoul on June 13, 2024.

According reports, Taeil helped to escort the Chinese woman out of a bar and placed her in a taxi with one of the co-defendants, identified as Lee, sending her to Lee’s home. Taeil and another friend, Hong, followed in a separate vehicle. The alleged assault occurred at Lee’s residence.

According to prosecutors who are working on the case, this was not a spur-of-the-moment act by Taeil and his friends. Investigators found text messages where Taeil and his friends discussed the victim being a foreigner (Chinese) and even plotted to mislead police by manipulating GPS data. It reportedly took two months for the authorities to track the defendants using CCTV footage.

In court it was laid bare and what was painted as a grim picture of the sheer vulnerability that was exploited. As of now, the justice lies with the prosecutors who are currently demanding a seven-year prison sentence for each perpetrator.

All eyes turn to July 10, 2025, when the final, agonizing chapter of this dark saga will unfold in the sentencing hearing. What sentence if any do you think is enough for this horrendous crime?

NCTzen's Reaction

K-pop fans NCTzens have had a whole host of reactions, ranging from shock, anger, and all-around disappointment. Many fans have distanced themselves and called for justice, since many of the band's fans are women themselves.

Some fans have even gone as far as destroying Taeil's once-prized merchandise, which includes photocards and albums, and even signed photos!

Do you think the proposed seven-year sentence is enough? Or is it too long? Have your say and let the Dojeon team know your thoughts in the comments!
