  • Is Korea's birth rate making a U-turn? We tackle what's really going on!

South Korea has seen the highest birth rate increase in nearly 12 years, and the number of marriages is also surging. How has this been happening recently in a country notorious for declining birth rates? We tackle the details to see what's really going on! July 2024 saw the biggest increase in Korean births in the past 12 years with a total of 20,601 babies born in July alone. This is a 7.9% increase compared to the previous year. This surge is partly down to Korea already having a low birth rate and marriage rate, which was blamed on the COVID-19 pandemic where many marriages were postponed. Marriages in July 2024 saw the highest increase rates since records began in 1981.  The number of deaths was 28,240 in July 2024, an increase of 0.4% over July 2023, resulting in a natural population decline of over 7,639. At the same time, marriages in July 2024 surged by 32.9% over July 2023, exceeding 18,000 marriages. This marks the highest year-over-year increase for any July since records began in 1981 and the largest overall rise in 28 years. The highest is a 50.6% jump in January 1996. Let's take a look at this video which provides us with more information. Our breakdown We think that this is really good news, as Korea's birthrate for a long time had been on the decline which would have affected Korea in the long term in terms of filling job opportunities and industries. Previously, for a long time now, Korea has recorded a dangerously low birth rate, which kept on getting lower and lower. People took to social media platforms such as Instagram to express their concerns and reasoning as to why it was so low; Korea has also offered incentives for couples to get married and have babies which in turn should see the birthrate continue to rise, especially outside of the capital Seoul where the programs are pushed more. (Check out this article for more details) Will these incentives work? https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/south-korea-to-start-a-4-day-workweek-will-it-work-we-find-out In the meantime let us know what you think of this positive news. Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below. Do you think the incentives help in the long-term? #SouthKoreabrithrate #lowbirthrate #birthrate #koreancouple #koreansreact

  • SUGA Confronts Threats: ARMY Responds to Disturbing Wreath Protests

Even with strong support from his loyal fans, SUGA is experiencing upsetting threats that raise concerns about how idols are treated! We take a look at what these disturbing wreaths said and what happened! In a troubling turn of events, BTS rapper and producer SUGA , known as Min Yoongi , is experiencing a wave of harsh criticism and harassment from some anti-fans after his recent DUI incident. This backlash has taken a troubling turn, with funeral wreaths being sent to HYBE , the label that represents BTS, demanding that SUGA be removed from the group. The problem started on August 6 when SUGA had an accident while riding an electric scooter after drinking alcohol. Thankfully, he did not hurt anyone or damage anything. However, this incident got a lot of media attention and made many people upset. After an investigation, SUGA was given a fine of 15 million KRW, which is about $11,000, by the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office. Even after the incident was resolved, some anti-fans have not stopped their attacks. Recently, they sent several funeral wreaths to the HYBE building where BTS is managed. These wreaths usually show respect for someone who has passed away, but the messages attached to them are cruel, demanding SUGA’s removal from the group and even wishing harm upon him. In response, SUGA’s loyal fans, ARMY , have come out in full support. Many fans visited the HYBE office, carrying signs and purple ribbons to show their love for SUGA. They want to remind everyone that he is more than just an idol, he is a human being who deserves respect. One fan expressed their concern on Twitter, stating: “If this continues, it will become a very bad K-pop culture. So disrespectful 💔” Another highlighted the broader implications, saying: “The Korean industry is disgusting,” Showing how many people are upset about how idols are treated in this intense fan culture. This situation is similar to what happened with Seunghan from the group RIIZE . He was removed from his group after personal photos were shared online. This happened after fans protested outside SM Entertainment with funeral wreaths, showing how serious fan reactions can be in K-pop. As this troubling trend goes on, it raises questions about how idols are treated and what fans expect from them. Many people are calling for a change in idol culture, asking for more kindness and understanding instead of harsh criticism . SUGA has also responded by sending letters of apology to fans and focusing on his public service work. With the ARMY strongly supporting SUGA, there is hope for a kinder and more understanding K-pop community, where the well-being of idols is more important than drama and harsh judgments. #SUGA #BTSSUGA #KPOP #KPOPnews #Korea #Idols #Bangtan #شوقا #بتس #بانقتان

  • ODD YOUTH — Are they copying NewJeans? Fans take to social media to express their disbelief!

Another new K-pop group, Odd Youth , has been accused of copying the global K-pop girl group NewJeans! Fans take to social media to express their disbelief and we break down their new hit single "Best Friendz" ! October 18, 2024, marked the start of something special. The K-pop group Odd Youth, formed by members who have tried to graduate from the notorious K-pop training school for several years, introduced their new music video "Best Friendz" . This new group shows the spirit of K-pop's up-and-coming stars in a youthful and energetic way, conveying the powerful message of friendship. Here is the music video for the debut "Best Friendz"! Song name The 'Z' at the end of 'friendz' is already trying to focus on a younger, more hip demographic, along with the band name "Odd Youth". Can Odd Youth live up to their name and finally inject some new ideas into K-pop’s staid girl group landscape? Lyrics & Melody The single "Best Friendz" is a cute kids pop song, along with the bright percussion that promotes the chirpy singing. It felt as if every note was directed upwards in a cute dolly style, which can either attract listeners or turn them away, depending on their musical taste. Our Opinion To me, the song sounds like something you’d hear in a Barbie cartoon. With a heavy emphasis on fusing sing-song melodies to a sunny exclamation extolling the virtues of friendship. I can’t begrudge a song for doling out (very commercialized) positivity, but this brand of grade school cheese is not for me, and I feel that their ages are not very youthful. Check out our other article on Odd Youth member Guinn Myah: https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/why-can-t-this-k-pop-trainee-get-signed-guinn-myah-from-girls-planet-999 Let's take a closer look at how they may have been copying NewJeans! Fans have also taken to social media to express their comments on the new music video, and how they think the band has copied their musical abilities for the song from NewJeans . Since images were released of the members of Odd Youth back on September 18, 2024, fans were attracted due to the inclusion of Guinn Myah who was a contestant on Girls Planet 999. Along with this, many fans were reminded of the NewJeans in the quotes of the group's tweets which later accused the group's company of stealing concepts from the band. On the other hand, what NewJeans delivered in terms of their concept was nothing new, as it had been done by other groups in the past. Is this just a case of fans trying to out the band before they have even had a chance to start? • K-pop stars turn models as top fashion brands battle for their global fanbase

Many K-pop stars have recently turned into models as top fashion brands keep an eye on their growing global fanbases. We dive into which brands and groups have had the most success! K-pop stars in 2024 are attracting a lot of attention from overseas fan bases, and as a result top fashion brands have eyed these K-pop stars as a way to market their products to a global audience. Up until now, brand endorsement has featured a few K-pop idols as well as Western artists, however with typical ways of advertising becoming more costly, and many people using social media these days, top brands have eyed K-pop stars as a potential way to promote their products. A good example of this is U.S. designer Tommy Hilfiger, who recently browsed through a rail of custom-made suits worn by K-pop stars Stray Kids at this year's Met Gala , before unveiling a special label. The eight-member South Korean boy band are Tommy Hilfiger brand ambassadors and created a buzz as the first K-pop group to attend the prestigious Manhattan fashion event in May. The brand later spoke out: "We were, if not the most talked-about brand at the Met Ball, one of the most talked-about brands, because of the strength of K-pop and our association, I think it was the right time." Let's take a look at the boys in action at the Met Gala! Stray Kids are just one example of Idols which are turning to product sponsorship deals. K-pop star HyunA was named a global brand ambassador for Loewe. This has also meant that the singer and songwriter and PNATION signee have a loved style in both music and fashion. If you are not too familiar, some of her recent hits include "I’m Not Cool", which is led by a track of the same title that has sparked viral dance challenges on TikTok. The signing comes as Loewe takes control of the business in South Korea from a former distributor. It launched Loewe Korea, its latest subsidiary, effective July 1, clearing the way for the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton brand to build a closer relationship with its clients via personal services and exclusive experiences. Our thoughts I think that this is a good way for K-pop stars to make some additional revenue since record labels are notorious for taking huge cuts. This concept is really not anything new, and it has happened in the UK and the US for a number of years, however in conservative Korea, it has just started to become more mainstream inline with the influencer culture, and therefore I can see it being around for a long time. Think of the interaction that a K-pop star would get on Social media by making one simple post with a brands product, which in most cases would leave fans wanting to purchase that product themselves. This is a win win situation for everyone involved! Let us know your thoughts on this article in the comments below. #metgala #kpopinfluencer #idol #straykids #kpop #kfashion

  • [Restaurant of the Month] Laurel Tree — a great value that offers "upper class" value for affordable prices!

Laurel Tree is Dojeon's restaurant of the month for October and for good reason! Serving high quality food that doesn't break the bank with an amazing view, this restaurant is a sure way to bring a date, friends, or even dine alone! When I was was asked, what restaurant would you go to this autumn? There was no doubt in my mind when I said, "Laurel Tree." ( 로렐트리 동촌유원지 본점) Laurel Tree is a restaurant which is located in the Dongchon Resort area of Daegu . A great thing about this restaurant is that it overlooks the river, and has a peaceful atmosphere. The floor to ceiling windows let in all of the natural light, and at the same time offers fantastic photo opportunity of the river, not to mention an impressive view to look at while you enjoy some delicious food! What surprised me on my first was the restaurant offered an Italian menu. Don't get me wrong I love Italian food but it seemed unusual for the area. The extensive menu features some classic Italian dishes such as a wide variety of pizza options, in addition to this you can opt for steak, a sea food dish, pasta and some sweet treats if you still have room at the end. The portions are a good size and I found on my visits, the meals to be good value for money . The restaurant, although down to earth, showcases an upper class display from the plating, cutlery and service which is a nice touch to have from time to time in Korea. The pizzas for me are the obvious choice, and is the first thing I think of when I think of Italian food. There are the classics, such as pepperoni and margarita, though if you are after something more unusual then I would recommend trying the basil pesto shrimp burrata . The flavor was on point and I was left wanting more. I mean there was room for a small desert of course! This really should be the place to head this autumn for a delicious meal that doesn't break the bank, and a restaurant which offers unspoiled views across the river. What's not to love!? Let us know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below! • A family entangled in murder and heartbreak, MBC's crime/thriller "Doubt" is seriously addicting! 3 reasons why you need to be watching!

MBC's new fall psychological crime/thriller, Doubt , has us addicted to the screen! Dark and mysterious, the storyline and incredible acting is worth the watch! We share three reasons why this drama is not to be missed! Synopsis Jang Tae Soo ( Han Suk Kyu Dr. Romantic 2016) is at a familial crossroad, should he trust his teenage daughter, Jang Ha Bin ( Chae Won Bin Sweet Home 2 & 3 2023-2024), or his instincts? After just two episodes in, the complex storyline has us questioning the authenticity of Ha Bin's answers and actions when she is confronted by her expert criminal profiler father. Wrapped up in a local murder case, Jang Tae Soo is surprised to find out that his beloved hard-working daughter, Ha Bin, could be involved in the very same case he is currently investigating. Should he let his co-workers know himself or will they eventually find out? The balance of keeping a secret and following his instincts are put to the test! 3 reasons why Doubt should be at the top of your Fall watchlist! Han Suk Kyu is a genius actor! Veteran actor Han Suk Kyu is not to be overlooked! His superior acting has us drawn into his character! We finally get to find out why this family tangled up in murder and mystery is so cold. With not much emotion from both father and daughter ( Chae Won Bin is amazing by the way!), we didn't know what to expect. Now we know there is dark history between father and daughter! What is interesting is that when Ha Bin is involved in a car accident, we can see the look of a concerned father in Jang Tae Soo's eyes. He loves his daughter and cares for her, but has no clue to how to have her open up. We find out that there was something that happened between the two involving Tae Soo's deceased wife that has caused a rift between them. Chae Won Bin is so secretive and unemotional...and it works! Part of what makes Doubt so entertaining is Chae Won Bin's portrayal of an emotionally hurt daughter. Now that we know that she also had a younger brother who passed away when she was young, she has closed herself off to the world and her father. When a subway incident involving a missing cell phone and a trip to the police station occurs, Ha Bin must protect herself and the truth from coming out to her father and the police! We sense that there is more to the story than what Ha Bin has been telling her father. When Tae Soo finds out some leads regarding his daughter's involvement in the murder case he is investigating, he dives into her private life causing a larger rift between father and daughter. Clues, clues, and more clues! If you're a sucker for a mystery clues storyline, Doubt provides just the fix! With all signs pointing Ha Bin being involved in the murder case, the rabbit hole gets even deeper when the two delinquent girls she was involved with on the subway are the prime suspects in Tae Soo's murder case! The more we watch, the more glued we are to the screen! With each episode opening up a can of worms, we are intrigued at where this story will take us. We also love that there are clues (that are vague at the moment) pointing to Ha Bin. Sometimes the way she acts seems like she's a killer as well! (We are thrown in all directions!) Filled with mystery, suspense, and character development, Doubt is this Fall's must-watch crime/thriller! Let us know your thoughts on this amazing new K-drama in the comments below! Doubt airs every Friday and Saturday on MBC at 21:50 KST . #Doubt   #HanSukKyu   #ChaeWonBin

  • Seunghan Forced Out of RIIZE Amid Scandal and Toxic Fandom Backlash! What happened? We have the details!

SM Entertainment’s RIIZE member Seunghan has allegedly left the group as of October 13, 2024. The news was confirmed through an apology letter, marking his departure after returning from a 10-month hiatus due to a dating scandal. Seunghan’s exit has been met with mixed reactions, especially from Korean netizens. Many have been vocal about supporting RIIZE as a 6-member group, pushing Seunghan aside due to his past relationship. The controversy began on August 28, 2023, when a photo from Seunghan’s pre-debut days went viral. The image showed him kissing a teenage girlfriend in a motel, which angered netizens — not for the kiss itself but for dating during his trainee days. On August 30, Seunghan issued an apology to fans, acknowledging the situation but emphasizing that it was in the past. He expressed accountability for RIIZE's reputation, hoping to regain fans' trust. However, things escalated when more videos allegedly involving Seunghan began to circulate. On November 18, one such video showed him smoking, which, despite being legal, was deemed inappropriate by many netizens. SM Entertainment responded to these videos, warning of legal action against those fabricating them. Nevertheless, the company announced on November 22, 2023, that Seunghan would take an indefinite hiatus from the group. After a long absence, Seunghan finally returned to RIIZE on October 11, 2024, sparking excitement among fans. However, not everyone was pleased, with many Korean fans protesting his return. On the second day of his comeback, SM Entertainment’s main building was filled with 1,000 funeral wreaths bearing demotivating messages for Seunghan. This overwhelming backlash likely led to his departure the next day. The actions of these fans were not only extreme but also dehumanizing. Sending funeral wreaths to a living person, especially a 21-year-old, is seen by many as crossing the line, leading to international outrage. International fans have expressed frustration, accusing SM of bullying Seunghan and forcing him out for no solid reason. Many stores have stopped selling RIIZE merchandise, and fans are boycotting the group until Seunghan receives justice. Korean fandoms are known for their conservative attitudes, often refusing to forgive idols for past relationships. Ironically, some idols involved in serious crimes, such as assault, continue to receive support. Right now, international fans stand firmly by Seunghan and OT7 RIIZE. Hashtags like #JUSTICE_FOR_SEUNGHAN and #SAVERRIIZEfromSM are trending, calling out SM Entertainment for its treatment of Seunghan. Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. Several K-pop idols have faced severe consequences due to toxic fandoms, with some even losing their lives to public pressure. Former Super Junior member Kangin left his group after a drunk driving incident, while Lucas of NCT went on hiatus due to rumors and eventually quit SM Entertainment in 2023. It's time to ask how long this cycle of bullying will continue. Despite being in the 5th generation of K-pop, local fans remain fixated on idols’ private lives, often causing their downfall. We stand with Seunghan and urge everyone to learn the full story before judging any idol. These incidents can harm idols both mentally and physically. It’s frustrating to see that Seunghan’s incident is being swept under the rug, especially when it deserves the same attention and recognition as NewJeans’ Hanni's testimony against bullying . Both are examples of workplace harassment, yet only one is receiving public acknowledgement. What do you think about the way this situation has been handled? Should SM Entertainment have stood by Seunghan, or was his departure inevitable under public pressure? #Seunghan #RIIZE #SMSupportsBullying #SaveRIIZEfromSM #Justice_for_Seunghan

  • Fans React in Frenzy to Hanni's Court Testimony on Workplace Bullying in K-Pop

Hanni , the leader of NewJeans , recently attended a national court hearing on October 15, 2024. She discussed workplace bullying within   HYBE , the parent company of ADOR , NewJeans' label. Her testimony has generated mixed reactions from fans and netizens alike. Before the court hearing, Hanni addressed the issue through a YouTube video using a burner account. In this video, she called for the reinstatement of ADOR’s former CEO . During her testimony, she recalled a troubling incident: "I was waiting in the hallway after finishing my hair and makeup when about three members and a female manager passed by. I politely greeted them. They came back out five or ten minutes later, and the manager saw me and told the members, 'Pretend you didn't see her, just ignore her'". In response, Kim Ju Young, the current CEO of ADOR, stated, "Unfortunately, the statements from both sides are at odds based on our internal investigation." She emphasized, "I trust what Hanni is saying, but I've been frustrated in trying to find evidence to support her claims. So far, we haven't been able to secure any proof ." Some fans are questioning why Hanni only mentioned this specific incident in court. Critics argue that if she aims to address workplace bullying thoroughly, she should  reveal more instances. Many feel that her portrayal of "being ignored" seems trivial, especially when numerous K-pop idols face similar treatment daily. While it's not our place to judge what constitutes bullying, myth perception of Hanni's claims raises concerns among fans. Some believe her comments may unintentionally overshadow the experiences of idols who endure harsher realities in the industry. In her heartfelt statement, Hanni expressed gratitude: "I would like to thank the members of the National Assembly who created this space. Today, this space is about issues of workplace bullying and ostracism." She continued, "I thought about this while going through this myself, but I know that the law is not the solution to all the problems in the world ." Hanni emphasized the need for respect, stating, "If we respect people as people, there won't be any workplace bullying and ostracism." She urged those who need to apologize to come forward confidently, expressing frustration about those avoiding the issue. CEO Kim Joo Young responded, saying, "As Hanni said, I will listen more closely to the artists' voices and strengthen communication." She promised, "I will do my best to faithfully cooperate with the ongoing investigation by the Ministry of Labor so that the facts can be clearly revealed ." Fan reactions are mixed and reflect a wide range of opinions. Some fans commented, "It's so weird; everything is so face value with this case"! Others expressed skepticism, saying, "These claims seem contradictory, but it's essential to verify facts before jumping to conclusions. Misinformation can harm reputations, so it's important to handle such accusations carefully". One fan noted, "Wow, that's a lot to unpack. Honestly, it sounds like a mess of misunderstandings and drama.=". They added, "Sometimes people say things without thinking about how it'll come across, and it just spirals from there". The future of NewJeans hangs in the balance. Hanni has the right intentions in advocating against bullying and for better treatment of idols. However, her past support for Min Hee Jin raises questions about her message's effectiveness. As the investigation continues, the K-pop community watches closely to see how this situation will unfold and what it means for the artists involved. What are your thoughts on Hanni's claims about workplace bullying in the K-pop industry, and how do you think it should be addressed? #Hanni #NewJeans #workplacebullying #MinHeeJin #ADOR #HYBE #testimony
