Being a K-pop fan, or “stan”, will always be one of the best decisions I have ever made. However, as a Black (African American) stan , there are a lot of stipulations that can come from venturing into K-music. While it doesn’t come from K-pop itself, being a part of the community can be a little nerve-wracking. So why do I do it? Why am I so proud of it? K-pop has become a huge part of my life and still is, so there must be something worth it right? Let me explain. Childhood and upbringing Growing up in a small town, K-pop wasn’t something I knew of at all. And while my parents have always been supportive of anything that interest me, they expected me to continue listening to the soulful music I grew up with. I still do of course, but becoming a K-pop fan in 2018 really changed my perspective of my music taste. The content, the community, and just the overall closeness you feel with your favorite artists were so different from what I knew. It gave me so many creative outlets that I was hooked on it!  What's the issue with Black fans? So what is the issue that makes it a little harder for us Black fans? It unfortunately is just another form of what we face in any social setting. Since we aren’t as accepted, we sometimes get invalidated in the stan community. If we call out something we find is a direct hit to our culture, speaking out on it can be intimidating. Nonetheless, educating other fans on our culture is always a positive and we are continuing to break more barriers.  K-pop has so many qualities that make these little things worth it. The idols who work so hard to produce music, choreography, and videography for their fans, concerts, and fan meetings are just some of the reasons we Black fans stay in this community. Also, from my perspective growing up and being around so many others in my culture, we have always used music as part of our language, regardless of what country it comes from. Pushing through and enjoying something that has stuck with me is part of living. In a league of his own Choi Woo Sik displays a unique combination of victim and predator in his latest role as Lee Tang, a typical college guy who likes working out and talking about girls. Little did he know he could attract vile people who deserved to die from their previous crimes. Throughout the series, Lee Tang displays passive-aggressive behavior, depending on who he comes into contact with. He fights with his inner demons and moral beliefs on whether he should turn himself in, suicide, or continue with what he is doing. He even compares his newfound "skill" to a lottery ticket and considers continuing with his serial killer ways. Mind games, with himself It is an absolute pleasure to watch Lee Tang go back and forth in his thoughts, in his tiny one-room apartment playing scenarios in his head. Amusing as well as dark. The emotion shown on Choi Woo Sik's face is very clear to the audience about what he is thinking. We can actually sympathize with him as he takes us through his logic. Is Lee Tang right? A Killer Paradox makes us question whether Lee Tang's actions, killing evil human beings, is an act of justice. Since the law wasn't able to prosecute these ex-convicts properly, is it okay for Lee Tang to "take out the trash" one by one? Each episode introduces new characters that are equally, if not worse, than the previous ones that Lee Tang kills; a woman who kills her parents, a man who tries to take over his friend's family and sleeps with his wife, or two violent teenagers who stab a detective because their egos were hurt? Each episode makes the audience question their morals and that's what makes this series so much fun to watch! Korean street food in Texas? You bet! I'm going to take you through a taste bud journey you're not going to forget! Let's go! A small Asian-based strip mall named “ The Crescent ” is home to plenty of shopping and food spots for both residents and tourists. It's the perfect place to visit to enjoy the beauty of Asian culture in many forms. One noticeable restaurant is one of the most popular for shoppers. Oh K-Dog is a small Korean restaurant that specializes in Korean corndogs and egg toast. Since Korean corndogs are widely acclaimed in America, they are an exceptional spot to enjoy them. In this review, I took the chance to try both of their specialties and bask in the atmosphere! Upon first walking into this restaurant I knew I’d enjoy it. Why? Because the place was completely packed with happy customers laughing, talking, getting together, and enjoying themselves. However, the smell that came from the open kitchen was even better! The modern-styled shop has a brown wood look that is attractively homey. Once at the register, the customer service was positive, which is always a huge plus when visiting a busy place. The worker even gave me the recommendation of a good dipping sauce to try with my order (garlic, just do it)!  My chosen order was a classic half mozzarella half sausage corndog, a rice cake corndog, and a bacon and cheese egg toast. They also offer simple boba tea flavors, but I just went with a canned drink in the accessible fridge. After trying the food the restaurant has now become one of my favorites! The classic corndog was an expected pleasant snack, however the rice cake dog was something I had never tried. It with the garlic dipping sauce was so good I was tempted to buy another! The egg toast was absolutely to die for and I absolutely loved it! Overall my experience at Oh K-Dog was friendly, (stomach) fulfilling and so chill. Rather than a dinner or breakfast spot, it is a great option for a snack or lunch while you mosey down the strip mall. Visit them if you want to enjoy yourself and have some tasty food! I believe that there is no better way to experience and learn about a country, than through its food. If you are anything like me, I always try to book a cooking class when I visit somewhere new. So let's embark on this Korean culinary adventure together! I have always been inspired by food from other countries, and since I moved to Korea back in 2020, I have always wanted to learn how to make some of the local dishes. So when I visited Gangneung ( Gangwon-do ) Korea, I booked an afternoon cooking class, to learn how to cook '"Soft Tofu" which I learnt is a Korean traditional food, and is local to the area. Now, coming from a Western culture, I had experience eating hard tofu before, but I had never cooked it. I wanted to push myself and try something new, as well as to learn about the traditional methods. The cooking school had a large space, which was great as there were around 15 people taking part in the class with me. You know, it 's said that a trip to Gangneung is not complete without eating Soondubu ( 순두부 - soft bean curd or soft tofu) in Chodang! The seawater in Gangneung has a deeper and lighter taste than other regions in Korea, which maximizes the flavor of the soybeans and provides rich minerals. First, we were shown a demonstration on how to "milk" the soybeans the traditional way, which was on a stone grinder which looked pretty simple, though when it came to my turn it was a lot more difficult to keep the pace. As you can see in the picture above, the soybeans go inside of the grinder and you then have to rotate the handle for the milk to come out into the bowl. Actually, because the soybeans are very firm, they usually need to soak for around 6-8 hours before starting this process, so the beans were pre-soaked. Once this step was finished it was time to boil the tofu for a short time and then place it into a mold. In Korea, there is not a big difference between soft and hard tofu other than the time it spends in a mold and the simmering time. (For soft tofu, you need to leave it for a short time). After all of the hard work in the kitchen, it was FINALLY time to enjoy the labors of our efforts and try the tofu itself! I tried a piece of the tofu before it was added to the soup, and I have to say, I could really taste the fresh flavors! We were then given the option as to which soup, we would like to have our tofu with. For me, I chose the spicy Kimchi soup. The flavor was insanely good! You can book a full-day tour, where you visit a local market and purchase ingredients, or make some other side dishes, or a half-day tour where you simply just do the class. We finally get a glimpse of Son Suk Ku's new black comedy crime/thriller A Killer Paradox ! Normally, playing very stoic characters, this one's going to definitely knock you off your seat! If you are interested in history or just want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, then Gyeongju is a MUST-see on your trip to South Korea. Here, you can take a walk back through time, and embrace yourself in the Historic UNESCO World Heritage sites and experience the gorgeous rolling hills and mountains, or simply relax and enjoy one of the many coffee shops or restaurants that Gyeongju has to offer! Formerly part of the Ancient Kingdom of "Silla" (57BC-935AD) Gyeongju is Located in the Southeastern corner of North Gyeongsang Province in South Korea and is one of South Korea’s modern-day cultural capitals. 1) Gyeongju National Museum Now, this is a great place to start your trip in Gyeongju! At the National Museum, you can take a look at the 3,000 dazzling displayed artifacts of the Silla kingdom, free of charge! Having recently had a renovation, the National Museum has been separated into an art gallery, Wolji Pond Exhibition Hall as well as the Historical Artifacts Exhibition Hall. The museum is fairly big and hosts a wide collection, so there is plenty to see inside. Also, the arrangement was quite systematic, so if you really pay attention I am sure you can learn a lot about Korea and the Silla Kingdom. For me, this is one of the better museums I have been to in Korea, and I think it’s because of its vast space and rich history. I found out that over 100,000 artifacts is being held there, but only 3000 are on display, so I feel that there will be plenty of exhibitions and events. With the museum being free, it allows you to dip in and out as you want. Time: 1 hour. Fee: Free. (Free parking) 2) Daerenungwon Burial Mound Located adjacent to the National Museum, for me, one of the most impressive sites has to be Daerenungwon Burial Mound, for the simple reason of its vast scale and unique simplistic look. Daerenungwon Tomb complex is where large ancient tombs of Kings and nobles of the Silla Kingdom can be seen in the 23 tombs In fact, one particular tomb known as "Cheonmachong" is home to around 11,526 remains of royal crowns, which were discovered in the 1970s, along with a painting of a mounted horse. Here, you really can try to imagine what life was like 1,500 years ago. Also located on the prestige grounds of Daerenungwon Burial Ground is the exhibition hall, where you can read inspiring articles and transcripts from the Silla period. I personally think it’s better to come here earlier in the day before the crowds. I enjoyed walking around the tombs and the pristine gardens, and I managed to get some great photos and learn a lot too. Time: 1 hour Fee: 3,000 KRW to cover the complex. 3) Yangdong Folk Village. Yangdong Folk Village is both scenic and unique. I found the scale of it pretty impressive, with paths leading through the valley up to the mountainsides, to the little pockets of houses which are around 500 years old! The thatched roofs of the common peoples’ houses are located mostly at the bottom of the valley, and the homes of the nobility are up on the hillsides. The village presents a perfect opportunity to gain a richer understanding of village life in old Korea, as well as being a great photo spot!  You can also watch and take part in "traditional archery" and "rice cake" (떡) making at some of the boutique shops. The folk village is host to a variety of craft shops and cafes, and I found it a perfect rest stop on my trip to Gyeongju, as it allowed me to soak in the atmosphere and culture, while enjoying a cup of coffee! Time: 1 hour. Fee: Free. 4) Woljeonggyo Bridge A two-minute walk from Yangdong Folk village, you will notice the beautiful Wolkeonggyo Bridge. Built during the 19th year of the reign of King Gyeongdeok, the 35th King of Silla, the longest pedestrian-only bridge in South Korea, this is 387m long. It is a partly wooden bridge that spans the Nakdong River, and is an amazing photo spot!  This is a great place for wearing a Hanbok (Korean traditional dress) and embracing the rich culture. You will see many people dressed up along the side of the bridge along with hanbok rental shops. Woljeonggyo Bridge is pretty by day, but this Silla-era structure is at its most spectacular when lit up at night when it resembles an ornate wooden palace. Once you have crossed the bridge, you can always cross back an alternative way. Which is stepping along the large perfectly placed stones. For some people, this may feel a little risky, though having watched people of all ages do this, I tried it for myself and had a lot of fun. It also enabled me to get a great photo of the bridge. Time: 30 minutes. Fee: Free. 5) Wolji Pond (Formally known as Anapju Pond About a 5-10 minute drive from Woljeonggyo Bridge, you will reach Wolji Pond. Lovers of a picture-perfect moment should ready their cameras for the impressive royal pleasure garden, which it is famous for creating a mirror image at night in the reflections on the water. At Wolji pond, you will be sure to notice the many Bicheon statues around. The Bicheon statues were the most common Buddhist artwork to be discovered at Wolji Pond. It’s known to be a common adornment to decorate the nimbus or mandorla of Buddha during the Silla Dynasty. Containing 3 small islands, Wolji Pond is a great place to walk around and soak up the afternoon sunshine and rich culture, with the crumbling walls, and beautiful flower displays around. For me, this is one of my favorite places to visit in Gyeongju, because of its tranquil gardens and beautiful architecture. Time: 1 hour. Fee: 4,000 KRW. 6) Bulguksa Temple Around a 15-minute drive from Wolji Pond, you will arrive at Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju. Now, without a doubt, Bulguksa Temple is the most famous Korean Buddhist temple in both Korea and internationally. It was first constructed in 528AD, which was also the first year that Buddhism was officially accepted by the Silla Kingdom, and it was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage, as a set of religious architecture of exceptional value in 1995. Here, you will be sure to hit the crowds of both locals and tourists. Bulguska temple is a complex comprising a series of wooden buildings on raised stone terraces, and it is divided into three parts. The Hall of Buddah, Vairocano, Birojeon, the Hall of the Great Awakening, Daegunjeon, and the Hall of Supreme Happiness, Geungnakjeon. This really was built to represent the land of Buddha, and the temple is home to seven national treasures of South Korea. The stunning walkways and beautiful stonework really create a sense of luxury. The scale of the complex is vast and is home to a cafe, ponds, temples, and even live-in Monks, which you will often see and hear during your time visiting. This is a must-see when you visit Gyeongju, and like me, I am sure you will take lots of photos to remember this awesome moment, like I did. For me, the best part of visiting here was seeing the monks walking around and listening to them praying, as it gave me that oriental feeling and made me feel relaxed and calm. Time: 90 Minutes. Fee : 6,000 KRW. 7) Bomun Lake Now, this is a really cool place to see! The lake is an artificial lake where you can find paddle boats, tandem bikes, and many restaurants and coffee shops. This large tourist complex is a place not to be missed! Though it doesn’t have the character of the old town, here you can enjoy walking around the lake and taking photos at several amazing photo spots. In spring you can enjoy the magnificent display of Cherry blossoms. Bomun Lake is home to Gyeongju’s most luxurious lodgings and the lake and extensive parklands are lovely for hiking or cycling. I enjoyed walking around the lake at night, looking at the reflections on the water, and walking past street performers whilst soaking in the atmosphere. Time: 2-3 hours. Fee: Free. 8) Gyeongju World If you have some spare time on your Gyeongju itinerary, then head over to Gyeongju World for a fun-filled theme park day. What’s better is that the theme park can be reached easily and it has something for everyone. If you visit in the summer, you can have the whole of California Beach Water Park included in your ticket price. Gyeongju World Amusement Park is the largest theme park in the Southern area, and it is most famous for the X-Zone which features the Python, Mega drop, Tornado, Grand Canyon, and King Viking. Roller-coaster fan? Then don’t miss the amusement park! I had a great time here, and it was a lot better than I expected it to be. I already can’t wait to go back in the summer to go to the water park! Time: 3 hours. Things just got a little more satisfying in the latest episode of this winter season's most popular Korean drama Marry My Husband ! We break down our revenge fix from the latest episode! Spoilers! "Congratulations on picking up my trash" We couldn't have said it better ourselves! Kang Ji Won ( Park Min Young ) and Yoo Ji Hyeok ( Na In Woo ) crash Jung Soo Min ( Song Ha Yoon ) and Park Min Hwan's ( Lee Yi Kyung ) wedding! The most satisfying scene from episode 11 was definitely when Ji Won confronts Soo Min in her wedding dress and says, "Congratulations on picking up my trash."! (Oh no she didn't!) But how did it get to this? Let's rewind a little bit and explain! (We just had to add the scene!) Ji Hyeok gives in to his feelings Our brave time traveler and white knight Ji Hyeok finally begins to realize that no matter how much he tries to push Ji Won away, his feelings won't let him. After their passionate kiss from the night before ( Episode 10 ) Ji Hyeok still feels that being involved with Ji Won will turn out bad. Ji Won reassures him that it will be better if both of them regret their decision to be together instead of just one person. That's when the two lovebirds decide to date their hearts out! Meet the family from hell! Meanwhile, our backstabbing and cheating couple Soo Min and Min Hwan still haven't caught onto each other's scheming ways and have decided to get married! The two already have had a rocky start with Min Hwan's mother by lying to her about Soo Min's education and how her mother "adores" Min Hwan without actually meeting him. What really sets Min Hwan off the rails is when he finds out that their wedding invitations got sent through the company announcement board and soon the whole office knows of their relationship. That's when things get interesting as clashes between coworkers start to show their true colors! Wedding day This brings us back to the beginning of our article at Soo Min and Min Hwan's wedding. We find out that Soo Min has asked another ahjumma (older middle-aged woman) to pretend to be her mother! We don't even know if Soo Min's parents exist or know about this wedding! After the iconic scene (from the beginning of the article) between Ji Won and Soo Min, Soo Min is shaken with rage and convinces herself that she "won" since she stole Ji Won's "man" and his family. (Haha good luck girl!) Now, the friends from hell To add the cherry on top, Soo Min and Ji Won's high school friends show up, rather rudely, and out for revenge. Baek Eun Ho ( Lee Gi Kwang ) also received an invitation and showed up with the three high school bullies who used to bully Ji Won. They have learned that Soo Min "stole" Min Hwan from Ji Won and gave her a piece of their minds! Our thoughts Although this episode was full of fluff (Ji Won and Ji Hyeok date scenes and funny scenes between coworkers) it was still very satisfying to watch! 2024 is considered a lucky year, and it's the Year of the Dragon , the blue dragon or wood dragon to be precise, and it's the only mythical creature in the zodiac calendar. In the 2024 Year of the Wood Dragon, the Korean Lunar New Year in Seoul falls on Saturday, February 10th with public holiday dates stretching from Friday, February 9th to Sunday, February 11th, which means that mostly all Koreans will have days off for this period. We break down some awesome must-do Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year) activities that your wallet will thank you for! Let's check out these five things to do! Whether you are in Seoul for Seollal this year or thinking about coming to a city outside of Seoul, there are plenty of things to see and do! I personally think it's great to stay in Seoul for Seollal as it's fairly quiet which can make it a fun experience to go sightseeing without the horrendous crowds. Also, if you are thinking about leaving the big city, you WILL get stuck in traffic, because most people head back to their hometowns to reunite with their families. Let's check out the things you should see, while you're in Seoul! 1. GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE & OTHER HISTORICAL SITES Major royal palaces like Gyeongbokgung   and traditional tombs like Jongmyo Shrine will stay open for Lunar New Year in Seoul. Best of all, admission to all sites is free! Now, I think this is one of the most perfect times of year to visit, as usually these sites are very crowded with locals and tourists alike! Gyeongbokgung promises to be a hub of activity during Seollal in Seoul. If you haven’t had a chance to stop into one of these majestic places yet, this is the perfect time to go to experience cultural performances, traditional folk games, and other fun activities and of course, it will allow you to wear "Hanbok" which means (Korean traditional clothes). 2. Theme Parks Now, With 35 million Koreans on the road home for the Lunar New Year, theme parks like Lotte World , Everland, and Seoul Land can be a little quieter than normal. Best of all, there are Seollal activities, parades, and light shows to enjoy at a discounted price. If you are staying in Seoul, and don't have time to travel to Everland (which is located South of Seoul) then perhaps Lotte World Adventure is one of the easiest theme parks to access in Seoul, accessible by subway at Jamsil Station. There are both indoor and outdoor areas at Lotte World, so it’s easy to stay warm even during the depths of winter. 3. SKIING, SNOWBOARDING, AND SLEDDING RESORTS The Lunar New Year in Seoul usually falls in January or February. With the most snowfall of the year, these months also happen to be the best for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding in Korea. Phoenix Park located in Gangwon-do is a perfect family-friendly Ski Resort that offers ski lessons & snowboarding lessons for first-timers or to refresh your memory. As for me, I went here during the Christmas holidays and had a fantastic time! There are other resorts in the area, such as Eden Valley & High1 Ski Resort. Visiting a Ski resort also allows you to take a staycation outside of the city over the Seollal period, before the hustle of a busy work schedule returns. 4. Gwangali Drone Show in Busan On February 10th —  There will be a Lunar New Year Special performance with 2,000 drones at 7 P.M on Gwangali Beach  in Busan . This really is not to be missed! With locals and tourists gathering here to watch the drone show, it leads to an impressive experience and great photos too! Gwangali boasts a wide variety of Korean and Western restaurants as well as many bars, so you will never be short of places to ring in the Lunar New Year. Looking out over the ocean you will also see many boats, soaking in this relaxed atmosphere. 5. Spend a night at a Korean Temple Imagine swapping the hustle of finding something to do within the city on a Public Holiday like Seollal for a Temple Stay in South Korea – it’s not just a retreat; it’s a cultural adventure! There are many temples in Korea, which offer special temple stay programs for foreigners  that let you dive into traditional rituals while soaking in the serene vibes and beautiful landscapes that most temples here are surrounded by. For me, it has been something that I have wanted to try for a long time. Picture yourself meditating, partaking in Buddhist ceremonies, and sometimes exchanging smiles with resident monks, how awesome would that be?!
