Every character is self-absorbed and full of themselves We're a little sad to admit that every character in this drama is self-absorbed and so full of themselves! In a good way! A little glimpse into today's society, each character has their own problems and expects everyone else around them to also sympathize with them. This is what makes this drama so entertaining! The fact that no one else cares except themselves makes this drama so fun to watch and the misconceptions of each character's intentions are stomach-grabbing funny! 2. How can an evil be so good-looking? Sinister, cold, and lacking manners, Song Kang makes his demonic character, Jung Gu Won, look so cool without, literally, lifting a finger! Not to mention every scene with him is like a commercial for Calvin Klein ! Just joking, but not really! Song Kang's charisma is exploding in every scene and we're all for it! 3. The workaholic CEO does have a soft side Do Do Hee might be the heiress to a conglomerate, but it is refreshing to see that she is human after all. 1. Eat at a Korean Restaurant Ok, this one is a given if you are living in or visiting Korea! When we say Korean restaurant we mean KOREAN RESTAURANT . If you've been to Seoul before you would know that Western foods or foods that are perhaps specific (Korean beef), or not as common are typically more pricey, but if you eat at an authentic, typical Korean restaurant you will see how much cheaper the price is and not only that the meals are filling and usually healthier than what you get from the Western style places. Typical Korean restaurants aren't always decorated the fanciest but the food is 9 times out of 10 delicious! For example below, a single serving of Kimchi jjigae (Kimchi Stew) will cost between ₩8,000-₩10,000 ($6.00 - $8.00 USD) depending on where you go. The same goes for most stews, and usually all come with rice or noodles and banchan (side dishes). If you want even cheaper than that - you can get gimbab or ramyun prepared for you at gimbab shops or even the lovely ladies that have stalls set up on the side of the road, sometimes it's just an experience you can't beat! 2. See the Traditional Korean House at Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) is filled with history, tranquility, and beautiful scenic views. It is free to visit the village and village museum. To add to the experience you can wear a traditional hanbok and walk around but this will cost a little more. Nestled in and around the surrounding areas of the Bukchon are cozy cafes and restaurants, art galleries, perfumeries, and skincare shops, and not too far along areas with more little shops for jewelry, accessories, clothes, and snacks. Insa-dong (a shopping and food district) is also close by. The only thing you have to be mindful of when visiting is that people still live in Bukchon so you generally need to be quiet while walking through, some areas have signs telling people that they need to be quiet and considerate to those living there. One thing we would say to keep in mind is that this mall like many can get very busy and since it is underground (next to the train station) it does get packed, so if you're a little claustrophobic and don't like being stuck in crowds this may not be the place for you. 1. Visit Leeum Art Museum in Yongsan A Korean lady once told me, that one of the best ways to enjoy the summer in Korea was to " be inside an art museum drinking an iced Americano" . I couldn't agree with her more and think that her words can also apply to any season! Since we're in winter now I guess we can change it to an art museum and a hot latte! The Leeum Museum is a wonderful place to visit, it's free and has a mix of traditional and modern art, as well as exhibitions that are engaging and interactive. Walking around Ihwa Mural Village is a pleasant and peaceful experience in any season. As mentioned above, the right beverage is seemingly what is making the experience complete. Grab a coffee or a tea, walk around, and admire the art. You can take aesthetic photos along the walls and enjoy a beautiful view from the top of the hill, where you can also see part of the Seoul fortress wall. Bike ride along the Han River Seoul is filled with bikes, whether you're living here or visiting you will most definitely see some riding past you on a scooter, e-bike, or regular bicycle. Most common are the bicycles which people usually rent or borrow and return or stop riding once they get to their destination. Very Eco-Friendly! The most common app to use to rent bikes is called 따릉이 (Ddareungi) and looks like this: 따릉이 is a bike-sharing system that was established in Seoul in 2015. It is also called Seoul Bike in English. Ddareungi usually takes foreign cards (the last time we tried, it worked)! You first have to download the app and register and then scan the bike that you'd like to use (if you're in front of it). We wanted to start a series about K-Dramas that contain topics that are typically taboo in South Korea so here we are! Some notable taboo topics that we will look into are intellectual disability , sex (friends with benefits), domestic violence , women dating men somewhat younger , divorce , Koreans' perception towards foreigners , lookism , single parenthood , the list goes on and on! In part one of this series, we will look into the drama One Spring Night , and in Part 2 When the Camelia Blooms on the topic of " Single Parents " and how Korean society responds to single parents. In the world of K-Drama and real life, there are many similarities. The main similarity is usually that of the perception of Korean society. Korean society can at times be very harsh and this is usually towards these taboo topics. Having lived in Seoul for more than two years you can see that some parts of society are very superficial, meaning that people judge other people a lot based on looks, status, money, etc. Don't get me wrong like any place there are also many lovely things about South Korea. In the two dramas mentioned above, the story is centered on the premise of single parents and how society responds to them, some kind but most are not. I think the issue here in South Korea is people can be very judgmental because appearances are meant to be everything. In both stories, two single parents navigate life with their child and meet someone they'd potentially like to date. The biggest issue with this in society here is that those people they want to date are usually single and childless and single parents shouldn't want to date someone "different" from themselves. How the Dramas Tackle These Taboos One Spring Night One Spring Night Trailer One Spring Night is centered around a woman named Jeong In in her 30s who has been in a long-term relationship with Gi Seok. These two are at the stage where Gi Seok begins talking about marriage but evidently, Jeong In is not too enthused by the idea. The other main character of this drama is Ji Ho who is a single dad also in his 30s with a son named Eun Woo. The drama ends with Jeong In and Ji Ho falling in love and Gi Seok resisting the breakup throughout the drama. Single parenthood is frowned upon? I won't speak too much on the drama itself, but a prevalent theme throughout is the negative attitudes towards single parenthood in South Korea. It is clear that people find it unacceptable first of all that Ji Ho is a single dad and second of all because he wants to pursue a relationship with someone who does not have a child. Gi Seok makes his disdain evident in a somewhat condescending, yet polite way in his interactions with Ji Ho. I think his disdain did come from the fact that Ji Ho was stealing his girlfriend but you could slowly see Gi Seok wield Ji Ho's single parenthood as a sort of weapon to dissuade Jeong In and those around her from liking Ji Ho. In some scenes, the way he describes Ji Ho is like "that person" who is in a particular situation that people should stay away from and proceeds to say that he is clinging onto to Jeong In and their relationship in order to "save" Jeong In from the humiliation she would face of being "with someone" like Ji Ho who is a single father. The drama ends with the acceptance of Ji Ho and Eun Woo (his child) by Jeong In's mother and sisters. I think it was a beautiful drama because Jeong In fell in love with Ji Ho and despite the society she lived in, stuck by her truth about what she felt. Of course, it can be hard to raise someone else's child, but it shouldn't be hard to simply 'love' should it? Perceptions of single parenthood in South Korea need to change in order to support people to live healthy and happy lives, not isolate them from society. I was skeptical at first because I thought it was going to be like Physical: 100 and be a Korean show so I was initially a little disappointed to find out that it was not, and honestly, the representation of Asian ethnicities in the show seems a little low but that's an issue we will have to talk about another time. In this article, we discuss Squid Game: The Challenge . If you don't know much about it, it's a reality competition show based on the K-Drama Squid Game , if you don't know too much about it you can read more HERE . Betrayal, betrayal, betrayal, and having alliances? If you're watching or not, (and know of Squid Game ) you would know that playing this game requires some form of deception. As of Episode 5, there have been a few alliances formed though I'm not sure how far you can go when you reach the end. I mean it's great having an alliance but you're going to have to betray each other regardless? This reality show version of Squid Game brings out real human lust and desire with only a few faces showing genuine human care and love, but how true is it? We know they're all there for the money however, some are saying they are there for the experience as well. The Games The games they've competed in so far include Red Light, Green Light , and the Dalgona challenge, and in an interesting twist, the tug-of-war game was swapped out for battleships, perhaps due to the harmful nature of the game. Since it wasn't a physical test as it well it makes you feel a bit wary of what's coming. The Picnic Scene As I resist watching, I find myself wanting to watch more as something always interesting is happening. I have skipped past a lot of the banter, back talk and strategizing amongst alliances but the picnic scene - where they find out that their chosen picnic partner would be who they play the marble game with. Ouch! Especially for the mother-and-son duo! New Features of Squid Game The new features in the game such as having opportunities to eliminate other players and also for the Dalgona game with everyone being eliminated if a unanimous decision wasn't made about which symbol they would choose again, ouch! It physically hurts to watch people get eliminated before even getting a chance to play. We really felt it as well when number 200 was eliminated for being "social" but that's the game, right? And what about the Jack in the Box bit? I think it's interesting to see how different people perceive threats within this game - those who got the opportunity to eliminate people, their reasoning was generally the same but who they saw as a threat was different which makes you think about human psychology and how each of us can be similar but very very different at the same time. I guess it's like a survival of the fittest point of view and also who each of the eliminators interacted with. We are waiting to see how this picnic is going to go and the marble game especially for those like the mother and son and others who are sitting with their formed alliances, I guess it's the nature of the game. Fifty Fifty was a four-member K-Pop girl group that debuted in 2022, under the agency ATTRAKT ( 어트랙트) Long story short the group sued ATTRAKT, saying that they were mistreated, not paid on time, and overa ll had a hostile work environment. Since losing the court case against ATTRAKT, ATTRAKT announced that they terminated their contracts with three of the members Aran , Sio , and Saena because they had “slandered and defamed the agency” and that they were seeking to break their contracts anyway. 1. Visit a Korean Bakery Korean bakeries are top-tier. There are some really fancy places you can go to that resemble Western-style bakeries and often have a range of popular Western-influenced baked goods! Of course, there will always be the Korean spin-offs and originals which are great too! But have you been to a Korean, Korean bakery? I'm talking the choco (chocolate) pies, twisted donuts, and cheese-filled bread, you get the drift. These are the authentic Korean-style bakeries. We've mentioned one before in our Cute Things article. You can read more HERE . Did we mention that these bakeries are very decently priced? The easiest way to spot these bakeries is to look for the 빵 (ppang) sign! 빵 means bread! 2. Walk along Seokchon Lake Seokchon Lake is beautiful all year round. In the fall season, it's particularly pretty with its gold and orange foliage surrounding the lake. It's a big lake and there are two sides to it, there's the Lotte World side which I'm not generally a fan of because it can be quite busy and the theme park takes away from the natural scene of the lake, the other side is a bit more quiet, and usually has some ducks! Both have a great view of the Lotte Tower. Sometimes there can be a big yellow rubber duck on the lake too, not sure when he/she/they/them is coming back. Overall, it's a calming gentle vibe, a great place to take photos, and is right next to Lotte Mall! This is Seokchon Lake in the fall: 3. Visit a photobooth If you're a lover of all things Korea, you would know about the countless photobooths that exist in the city. The pricing usually starts at around ₩4,000 ($3.00 USD) I believe and can be more depending on which booth you go to. If you want more than one copy of the photos as well it will cost a little more. Recently in Korea, there has been a trending photobooth where the camera is above you rather than in front. Some other places have unique themes. There are also photo studios which can cost a little more but these are more professional type photos and don't come in the usual 4x4 squares. You can usually choose which frame you'd like for the cute photobooths too! Another bonus feature of those booths is some have places for you to fix your hair and makeup, some even have straighteners and curling irons and we must not forget to mention the fun props! You usually need a card to pay! Korea is a fun place! This isn't the first time Azealia Banks has made comments at artists including Troye Sivan and Anitta for similar reasons and some think it's her way of trying to "stay relevant." We think she is intentionally trying to make controversial comments to stay relevant in the music scene and just in general. We all know that there is still a bit of a divide regarding Chris Brown, he is a very talented artist, but we know that people still can't overlook the Rihanna incident in 2009.
