What is a Black Glazed Latte you may ask? Good question! That is a fall (or autumn) drink only known to be served in Starbucks, South Korea . Korea has a range of unique drinks in its cafes, the menus are endless and filled with beverages that pique your curiosity. In this article, we take a look at 4 Lattes (plus a bonus drink) that you may not find outside Korea! 시작하자 (Let's start)! #1 Tiramisu Latte - Mega Coffee Love Tiramisu? So do we! Love lattes? So do we! What about a Tiramisu Latte ? If I'm honest, nothing has come quite close to the unique range of beverages and food that I have come upon here in Korea. Friends and family, after visiting Korea would not stop talking about the delicious food and drink they had while on holiday here. A tiramisu latte is a blended, sweet coffee and cream mixture, the cocoa and cream on the top adds to the effect of eating a velvety and delectable tiramisu. #2 Dalgona Latte - Paris Baguette If you lived on social media during the beloved year 2020 (The Covid Episode) you would not have been a stranger to "Dalgona coffee" or as some people know it "Whipped Coffee". I would be lying if I said this coffee didn't get me through a few weeks of lockdown. It did, all thanks to the barista I had at home at the time (aka my sister). Dalgona ( 달고나 ) is a Korean candy, you may know it from the show Squid Game . Dalgona is a combination of sugar and baking soda and is a type of honeycomb candy. Korean coffees don't shy away from sweetness, that's of course unless you order an Americano or Espresso or even a normal Latte. This latte is sweet and is somewhat different from the whipped dalgona cream coffees we were all drinking throughout COVID-19. In Korea, these coffees have pieces of honeycomb mixed in or at the top of the drink (as pictured above), which is a little different from the home version (pictured below). #3 Black Glazed Latte - Starbucks Are those leaves I see gently falling off their trees? Is there a soothing breeze in the air? Yes, and you know what that means, it's fall in Korea - meaning BLACK GLAZE LATTE SEASON! In my first year of living in Korea, I worked in a building above a Starbucks so yes I basically lived there, it was nice for the soul but somewhat detrimental for the wallet. In that time I discovered the Black Glaze Latte and also that this latte is unique to Starbucks Korea! How cool! A Black Glaze Latte is essentially an Einspanner (which some of you may not know like me initially) and a rich cream, with a type of darkened sugar syrup, perhaps similar to the flavor of sweetened molasses. It's a rich, sugary drink and definitely creates a warm welcome for fall! #4 Strawberry Latte - Various Cafes In some cafes in Korea, you will find a Strawberry Latte, and even though it says in its name that it is a latte it does not usually contain coffee, making it perfect for those who love strawberries, don't particularly enjoy coffee, or want to take a break from coffee, let's respect the Italian Coffee Rule. Fun Random Fact: I know there are variations to this rule but generally, it states that coffee or milk-related beverages should not be consumed after 12 p.m. I believe that this is an unspoken rule, but sometimes in restaurants or cafes in Italy, milk-related beverages will not be served after 12 p.m. This is because they consider milk too heavy to drink after this time and that it won't be good for digestion! Fun fact of the day! Anyway, there are no rules like this in Seoul so do anything you feel like! Strawberry lattes usually consist of milk or cream with strawberry/strawberry-flavored puree. They really are as vibrant as the picture! This beverage is also very sweet but can also be a little tangy due to the strawberry flavoring which makes it a refreshing and brightening type of drink! BONUS DRINK TIME! BONUS: Cream Puff Honey Pong Crush - Mega Coffee WHAT IS THAT? You may ask. Let us show you! Back home in New Zealand, one of my favorite cereals is called Honey Puffs. I didn't expect to see it here in Korea, but I did! In the form of a snack and cereal called Jolly Pong! What does this have to do with the drink you may ask? I'm getting to it! Korea's innovation with beverages is unmatched! Let me introduce to you the Cream Puff Honey Pong Crush! This beverage has a blended, grainy texture with a sweet honey taste and as you can see is topped with Jolly Pong! There are different flavor variations, for example, banana! If you love Jolly Pong or honey-flavored snacks/cereals this may be worth a try! I'd like to think of myself as a natural-born detective and I'm sure you do too! I studied forensic science and had the crime channel playing many nights throughout the course of my study. In my experience, I would advise you, that as enjoyable as we may find these shows, we should be sensitive to those impacted by the content we are watching and ourselves. One should proceed with caution while watching these types of shows because it is true, that we are very much what we absorb! I'm not saying that you're going to become a psycho killer by watching these shows (but it has happened), just that it can have a negative impact on your mental health if you have watched too much, so please be mindful. Trigger Warning: This article will discuss topics such as murder, rape, and other criminal activity. Without further ado, let's proceed! 시작하자! #1 The Raincoat Killer (레인 코트 킬러) - Trailer Below! Having experienced living in Korea myself, these documentaries really make your spine shiver. If you're into romantic K-dramas (which there are a lot of out there) it really makes you see a new side to Korea and makes you wonder how safe it really is here. Korea is generally known to be a safe place, people often remark on their ability to walk home safely, late at night but recent events and shows like these make you question what is really around you. We don't want to give away too much before you watch these shows yourself, but let us give you a brief background . The Raincoat Killer is a three-episode docu-series based around Yoo, Young Chul who allegedly killed 20 women in the early 2000s. His motive for the murders and his actions were said to be a resentment towards the rich and women. His current status is that he is in prison awaiting execution. Notable parts of this documentary were his motive and the weapon that he made himself, with a grip to fit his hands and kill his victims. This drama had me on the edge of my seat. I would recommend it if you are into serial killer-type shows or murder mysteries. Check out the trailer for the show here: The Raincoat Killer Trailer - Netflix #2 In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal - Trailer Below! If I'm honest this docu-series made me feel weird so I didn't finish watching it. It has eight episodes and all are quite layered. I feel like the longer you watch the deeper you fall into this web of corruption and many, many unpunished crimes. This docu-series revolves around Korean Cult Culture and Jeong Myeong Seok , leader of the Jesus Morning Star (JMS), and the abuse of power in his time as leader of this, well basically a cult. This drama had a lot of controversy tied to it, especially around its release and how this would look for JMS. The director of the series, Jo Sung Hyun told the Korea Herald: “I recognized that many viewers felt uneasy with professor Kim Do Hyeong’s stories featured in the series, but they make up only one-tenth of his experiences over the past 30 years," “There are more untold stories, but I was not able to present them all. The released series is already horrifying and disturbing enough for some viewers. It was very difficult to hold myself back from crossing the line,” If you're into a more detailed and layered docu-series, I'd recommend this one. The director says there may be a sequel so let's see! Check out the trailer for the show here: # 3 Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror Lastly, Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror. This one really devastated me. It's always strange to me how people can present themselves so differently in different settings you would never guess their true heart and intentions for the people around them. This docu-series focuses on chat room sites and how women can be implicated in the worst ways, harming their bodies, reputations, and minds. This crime is also referred to as the Nth Room Case (N번방 사건). This case is based around a man nicknamed "godgod", also known as Moon Hyung Wook , who blackmailed his victims and was a trafficker of cyber sex. He sold exploitative videos (some involving rape and self-harm) to people on chat room apps, specifically Telegram. This show is intense. It depicts the great efforts of investigators and journalists to catch the culprit and save many girls who were trapped in a blackmail ring. I'd recommend this series if you are into a piecing-the-puzzle-type documentary. Those are three pretty heavy shows, so please watch with care! If you're not feeling good about what you're watching, turn it off and take a break. Self-care is key and taking in good things for the soul! Minhwa is a field of Korean traditional painting, which was especially popular and active during the later years of the Joseon Dynasty . Minhwa means "painting of the people" but is literally translated as "folk tale". Minhwa is special in that it was an area of art enjoyed by ordinary people of the country, instead of only being limited to the higher classes of society. The public population of Joseon expressed their desire for happiness, health, love, wealth, success, and longevity through the art of Minhwa. Most Minhwas follow the form of creating symbols utilizing animals, plants, and objects from daily life. This makes it feasible for us to infer the daily lives, thoughts, and culture of the people from the Joseon Dynasty through Minhwa. Furthermore, Minhwa was applied to numerous areas of life such as festivals, furniture, and apparel. Experiencing the magical dance of Minhwa Like most art forms Minhwa is about telling stories. If you're into K-dramas or have an interest in Korean culture you may have noticed some rather unique rituals and traditions Koreans have and regularly take part in. We look into some of these rituals and explain why they exist and what they mean! 1. Couple Outfits/Rings Many couples in Korea often wear couple outfits - this is known as "couples fashion". It could be described as a trend that keeps on trending. Couple outfits range from matching colors to matching pieces of clothing to - you guessed it - identical outfits. Don't believe us? Check out the pictures below. Another popular part of couple fashion and culture in Korea is couple rings. Many Korean couples wear matching rings, often in the form of promise rings, to symbolize their commitment to each other. Why couple outfits? Just like any other country South Korea has its own cultural and societal norms. Couple culture stands very strongly in South Korea and displays the significance of romantic partnerships in everyday life and people's expectations of life. Couple outfits visually express commitment and dedication to each other in relationships. It shows other people that the couple is also in a relationship. Other reasons include K-pop/K-drama influence, expressions of love, confidence in the relationship, anniversaries and special occasions, and just plain and simple fun! 2. Eating Jeon (전) on a rainy day On a rainy day in Seoul, a Korean friend advised me to eat "jeon" (전) paired with makgeolli (막걸리) with a boyfriend. I laughed and thought that sounds nice but it's also very specific! Why do Koreans like to eat Jeon on a rainy day? Answer: There is no specific reason. It just tastes amazing! After researching and asking around a few answers came up, including: Frying jeon sounds similar to rainfall This one is self-explanatory. Who doesn't love the sound and scent of sizzling, crispy food on the pan? The frying of Jeon in the pan sounds similar to rainfall and brings a sense of comfort and peace to the home and heart on a gloomy day. Therefore, what is better to eat on a rainy day? Social media influence Other sources say that eating Jeon on a rainy day became a common practice due to a strong media influence. For example, seeing people in K-dramas consume Jeon on rainy days and how this experience was pleasantly portrayed. Even the picture above of the drama Brilliant Legacy gives such a homely feeling. Comfort food This savory, crispy, hot dish is heartwarming. It's filling, flavourful, and somewhat simple making it an untouchable and enjoyable experience. Pair that with Makgeolli (막걸리) and you have the perfect day, making the gloomy, rainy day warm and comforting. Available Ingredients Historically, Koreans used seasonal ingredients that were readily available to them. Rainy seasons often bring fresh greens and vegetables, which can be used to make jeon. So, it's also practical to make this dish during rainy periods when such ingredients are abundant. Another source also said that it's helpful to be able to make Jeon from anything they can find in their pantry - it makes it easier than having to go out in the rain and buy ingredients! Tradition & Superstition Korean culture is rich in traditions and superstitions, and eating certain foods on specific days is a common practice. Rainy days are considered somewhat gloomy, and Jeon is believed to bring joy and light to these days. The round shape of the Jeon is also said to symbolize the sun, which can help ease the darkness of rainy weather. Gender-Specific Foods & Flavours This topic has not been documented considerably but it's noticeable in a lot of Korean media! I know in Western culture there can be certain foods that are perceived as "girly" but I think this pertains to its appearance rather than flavor. In Korea, there are notable differences in terms of specific flavors and foods regardless of their appearance. For example, Tteokbokki ( 떡볶이) is considered a more "feminine" food and other foods such as Jeyuk bokkeum ( 제육볶음) on Sundaeguk ( 순대국) are considered more "masculine". There are some flavors taken in this way, for example, rose flavor is considered to be more feminine and preferred by women. Reasons for this? There are many reasons to consider for gender-specific foods and flavors, however the two most notable reasons were: Cultural Expectations Korean culture, like many others, has long-standing gender expectations and stereotypes. Certain foods may be associated with qualities deemed masculine or feminine. For example, spicy and strong-flavored foods might be considered more suitable for men, while milder and more delicate flavors might be associated with women. Marketing and Advertising In some cases, food products and advertisements have perpetuated gender-specific flavors and foods as a marketing strategy. After a very nervous and hectic team performance evaluation, how are the contestants on JYP's K-pop survival show A2K faring? We break down who slayed and who needed more improvement! In the latest episode of A2K , Team SP3KTRUM's KG proved that she was worthy of being the next K-pop star by overcoming her weakness in choreography! With her dance skills lacking compared to her team members, J.Y. Park was concerned about whether KG had it in her to pull off K-pop dance choreography. Luckily, with the help of Kaylee and Savanna, KG was able to blow everyone away with her amazing performance in the team's evaluation! Savanna, on the other hand, struggled with vocals as she had difficulty hitting notes due to using her throat instead of her stomach to belt out the notes. The trio were able to overcome their weaknesses and put on a stunning performance! J.Y. Park gave Team SP3KTRUM an A+ for their amazing efforts! Check out their performance! Final Rankings Are Decided! After receiving the highest praise from J.Y. Park, it was undeniable that Team SP3KTRUM was the number one team! All members: Kaylee, KG, and Savanna each received a stone and are on their way to the finals! The team coming in at number two was BACK Dawgz consisting of Camila, Cristina, and Gina. The ranked third, Team Marteami, consisted of Kendall , Lexi, and Yuma. Of the nine contestants, only the top six were given stones! Here are the individual rankings: 1. Kaylee 2. Cristina 3. Camila 4. Savanna 5. Gina 6. KG Did not receive a stone: 7. Kendall 8. Lexi 9. Yuna The rule for A2K, from the beginning, was that if you finished last twice, you would be let go. And unfortunately, for Yuna, this happened. In an emotional farewell, Yuna said her last "goodbye" to everyone. We will miss you Yuna! In the end, each contestant voted for their favorite teammate over the course of 7 weeks. And the top three favorite teammates received a special reward from J.Y. Park! The prize was a day at the most famous amusement park in Seoul, Lotte World Adventure in Jamsil! The top teammate of A2K is Camila! Lexi and Gina were tied for 2nd place! Congrats girls! Gaetal literally means "dog mask" in Korean — "개" (gae) meaning "dog" and "탈" (tal) meaning "mask".
