When ATEEZ member San stepped onto the football pitch for a celebratory kick-off, his trending SNS dance routine went viral almost instantly on global social media sites. What was intended as a fun, feel-good moment quickly turned into an intense online debate between two very different fan bases. Let's take a deeper dive and find out what's been going on.
The Performance
Wearing an official Atlético Madrid jersey, San executed a brief, sharp snippet of choreography to ATEEZ’s hit track right on the pitch. This instantly gained a lot of attention online, since the dance move had been trending for a while. Right after he had finished performing the short dance routine, San completed the traditional ceremonial kick to kick off the matchday festivities, which, for many fans, was unexpected.
What Football Fans Think VS K-pop Fans
Sadly, despite San's short performance being a memorable and welcome experience for K-pop fans, this was not the same for football-goers. Traditional football viewers actually labelled the unexpected pop choreography as unnecessary and slightly dramatic, with some fans calling it a disruption to the usual sports schedule.

Sadly, since the performance, many xenophobic comments have surfaced online, mocking East Asian male performers through outdated stereotypes about K-pop idols. Hostile sports commentators also weaponized toxic masculinity and anti-LGBTQ+ slurs to attack the expressive fluidity of his dance moves, which have gained a lot of traction online. Since many K-pop idols have a slightly feminine image compared to Western artists, this could be one of the reasons that these comments have surfaced, also due to the recent hearsay comments about San having a close relationship with another band member.
Final Thoughts
