What is the show about?
The new music competition series brings together K-pop groups and Western pop icons to reimagine each other's hit songs. The recently released trailer confirms that ITZY will be teaming up with Mel B and Emma Bunton from the Spice Girls. They're expected to perform a mashup of iconic hits like "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There"! Read on for more details!
This show really will bring together a worldwide spectacle. It's said that the show will be hosted by Soojeong Son who is a well known comedian over an eight part competition in Seoul. The shows pretense is to give both established artists and rising K-pop groups the opportunity to reimaging their hit songs, while at the same time creating fresh new remixes, to appeal to a new audience.
During the show, each team will have the opportunity to perform their remixed track for a live audience, though at the same time competing to see who "K-popped" their song the best.
The trailer for the show offers a sneak peek at some of the exciting collaborations, including a powerful remix of Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage" featuring the K-pop girl group Billlie.
The teams will rehearse within a minimal time before having to deliver joint stages in front of a live audience in Seoul, South Korea. The winner is then chosen by the on-site audience through a vote.
Who are the confirmed line-up so far?
K-pop groups ITZY, JO1, Kiss of Life, Blackswan, STAYC, KEP1ER, ATEEZ, and the aforementioned Billlie, are all set to appear. They will be teamed up with popular Western artists like Meg, Kesha, Patti Labelle, Kylie Minogue, the Spice Girls’ Mel B and Emma Bunton, Vanilla Ice, Taylor Dayne, Eve, J Balvin, Ava Max, Boyz II Men, Boy George, TLC, and Jess Glynne.
In addition to performing, Meg stars alongside “Gangnam Style” rapper Psy. She is onboard as an executive producer on the competition show as well, as is singer-songwriter Lionel Richie.
East meets West
Collaborations between K-pop and Western artists have become a powerful force in the global music industry. These partnerships transcend linguistic barriers, creating a unique fusion of sounds and styles that appeals to a diverse international audience, and as the interest in K-pop and Korean culture continues to grow, we believe that there is no better time to air this show. By blending different genres and fanbases, these collaborations not only introduce K-pop to new markets but also give Western artists access to the genre's passionate and dedicated fandoms.
When and where will the show air?
KPopped is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on August 29.
Our thoughts
Looking at this lineup, there are some amazing names that come from the Western and the UK music industry, which, combined with some of K-pop's upcoming artists, will for sure make a great mashup!
Lewis Hooper, one of our veteran writers is also from the UK, and he mentioned that growing up in the 90s, the Spice Girls were everywhere, for that era, they were the BTS or the UK's music industry, and therefore they have made a household name for themselves, both in the UK and overseas for their success at the time. Lewis also mentioned that he saw on their Instagram that Mel B and Emma Bunton were in Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul earlier this year, and he was curious what they were filming there, but now it all makes sense!
Which mash-up are you looking forward to seeing the most? We would love to hear from you, so comment below!
