K-pop agencies, despite making billions of dollars, are also finding themselves in a race to cut production costs, with the use of AI.

Although AI is great for many things, outsourcing human activity and instead using an algorithm has backfired on several occasions. This time, by adding an extra finger to Jisung from NCT.

The Mistake

In an apparent attempt to save time and money, an unpolished AI-generated image of Jisung from NCT was created and posted online. Fans were quick to spot the extra finger, exposing the label's lack of quality control and growing reliance on AI-generated content.

The mistake quickly drew criticism across social media, with many fans questioning how such an obvious error made it through the review process. For critics, the incident highlighted the risks of prioritizing speed and cost-cutting over careful human oversight.

So Why Are K-Pop Labels Messing Up?

For years, agencies have focused on increasing and protecting their profit margins, despite already generating billions in revenue. Much of that success has been driven by the highly visual nature of K-culture and K-pop, which have flourished on a global scale in recent years.

However, the growing use of AI-generated tools and imagery in official releases can come across as a cost-cutting measure rather than an investment in creative talent. For many fans, it signals a reliance on artificial intelligence instead of the skills, originality, and vision of experienced human designers.

Squeezing Out Creatives

This technological shortcut directly threatens the livelihoods of the industry's skilled concept artists, photographers, editors, and other creative professionals. Concerns about AI replacing human talent have been present within the entertainment industry for a long time.

While AI and other technologies can help agencies save money and increase profits, the experience, creativity, and attention to detail that human professionals provide are often lost in the process, as we can see here. The human eye is far better at recognizing subtle details and maintaining quality, and fans ultimately connect with authentic creative work. So why are some agencies failing to recognize this?

Fan Reaction

K-pop fans quickly noticed the AI blunder and took to social media to express their outrage. Many created videos and blog posts criticizing the sloppy editing that made its way into the post. Although the post was quickly taken down, the mistake damaged some fans' trust and quickly turned into a public relations nightmare. Some fans even accused the label of greed and disrespecting the group's hard-earned image by showing little care or attention to detail.

Final Thoughts

The Dojeon Media team believes that although K-pop has become a massive global success thanks to acts like PSY and BTS, some labels have become complacent and dropped the ball.

Human effort and emotional connection are qualities that many K-pop fans value, and if labels want to sustain the continued rise of K-pop, they need to bring more authenticity to their published content in order to maintain the trust and loyalty of their fan base.
