K-drama fans have taken to social media and blog sites in their thousands after the highly anticipated royal drama Perfect Crown showed countless AI (artificial intelligence) flaws in the coronation scene in episode 11, despite its impressive ratings. So how could such a major production let a simple AI overlay slip past them?

The Costume Oversight

In the talked-about coronation scene of Grand Prince I-an (played by Byeon Woo-seok), the new ruler ascended the throne wearing a Guryu Myeonryugwan. This is a traditional ceremonial crown that features nine strands of beads. For K-drama fans, they were easily able to pick up on the specific historical attire. Historically the attire symbolizes a lower-ranking vassal or tributary state ruler, rather than a grand prince.

The Language Blunder

The historical attire was not the only mistake made in the show. Later adding fuel to the fire was when the court officials in the same sequence chanted "Cheonse!" (meaning thousands of years of life) to honor their new sovereign.

Thanks to some switched-on viewers, global K-drama fans came to realize that an independent, modern constitutional monarchy should use the imperial chant "Manse!" instead, meaning "ten thousand years." This should be the chosen phrase; further, it implies a subordinate status to foreign empires. The writers of the show really should have conducted their research thoroughly before finalizing scripts and producing the show.

The AI and Production Gap

The use of AI in any modern show is a given; however, with the show's huge 30 billion KRW (almost USD $20 million) budget and their massive team and advanced digital production, there really should have been no errors. Staff and even automated AI checkers both completely missed these fundamental cultural and historical flaws.

Sadly, they left viewers of the show baffled and also confused as to how, having such a massive budget and the use of advanced technology, they overlooked the simplest of things. If the show had done a modern spin, then it would have been slightly different; however, since they were basing it on a certain period, there should have been no errors.

Fan Reaction

K-drama fans are rightfully frustrated with the production of the show. Some fans globally have gone as far as pointing out these crucial errors to be the same as

real-world geopolitical controversies like China's Northeast Project

As some global K-drama fans tried to dismiss these AI historical flaws as harmless, in reality for most Korean viewers, cultural aspects of the show really should show proper historical respect. Else, they open themselves up to backlash from dedicated and attentive K-drama fans.

Final Thoughts

The Dojeon Media team can understand the frustration and disappointment that K-drama fans have when it comes to cultural errors and AI flaws within the drama.

Although formal apologies have been made from the lead actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok, it really is not down to them to apologize. They were solely there to act and entertain, and they are not responsible for writing the script or editing.

Perfect Crown serves as a stark reminder to the entertainment industry that no amount of star power or technical budget can replace meticulous, human-led cultural checks when it comes to verification. Will this lead to more big-budget K-dramas rechecking their work more thoroughly in the future?
