  • "Captivating the King”: Unraveling Twisted Mindsets of Romance in a Historical K-Drama [Spoiler Alert!]

In the realm of K-dramas , Captivating the King takes us on a riveting journey back to the war-torn days between the Chinese and Korean dynasties. Against this historical backdrop, the drama explores the intricacies of romance, featuring a gripping tale of love, obsession, and shifting mindsets and we can't wait to break it down for you! Read on for more! The narrative starts around Kim Myung Ha, played by Lee Sin Young ( Rookie Cops 2022), who becomes infatuated with Kang Hee Soo ( Shin Se Kyung Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun 2023) , a formidable baduk (Korean Go board game) player. In a deviation from traditional romantic norms, Kang Hee Soo sets a unique condition for any potential suitor – the ability to defeat her in the intellectually challenging game of baduk. Myung Ha's determination to win her heart, despite repeated defeats, raises questions about the portrayal of love in the context of obsession. Toxic mentality or just traditional norm? In today's society, Myung Ha's relentless pursuit might be deemed toxic, reflecting a twisted mindset prevalent in the old days. The drama offers a nuanced exploration of how such behavior can be perceived differently across time, shedding light on the evolution of romantic expectations. Compatibility over capability? As the storyline unfolds, a new contender enters the scene – Prince Lee In, portrayed by Cho Jung Seok ( Hospital Playlist 1 & 2 ), who finds himself taken hostage by the Qing Dynasty. His encounter with Kang Hee Soo introduces an alternative romantic dynamic, emphasizing compatibility over coercion. This presents a stark contrast to Myung Ha's approach, sparking curiosity about the direction the narrative will take. Potential downward spiral? The drama hints at potential spirals into a depressing trajectory, with Myung Ha's desperation to win Kang's affection at any cost. The question arises: Will he resort to forcing Kang Hee Soo into marriage, unveiling the dark underbelly of his obsession? Netflix' s Captivating the King not only transports viewers to a historical setting but also prompts reflection on the evolving nature of romance. It serves as a captivating window into the past, exploring the complexities of love, power, and societal expectations. As the drama unfolds, audiences are left eagerly anticipating the twists and turns that will shape the characters' destinies, providing a unique lens through which to view history from the cinematic perspective. • Beautifully Digitally Reimagined Korean Cultural Heritage Art in the Philippines!

An Exhibition Celebrating 75 Years of Friendship between Korea and the Philippines. The National Museum of Korea (Director General: Yoon Sung Yong) is presenting Endless Landscape: Digitally Reimagined Korean Art at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (Director: Kim Myeongjin). This exhibition, featuring immersive video works using new digital technologies, will be held from Friday, January 19 through Saturday, June 29, 2024 . The First Achievement of the NMK’s Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program in the Philippines This exhibition is the first outcome in the Philippines of the National Museum of Korea’s Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program. To establish a foundation to broaden the reach of K-culture, the National Museum of Korea is promoting customized support programs to fit the local characteristics of different countries around the world. In the Philippines , the absence of Korean galleries or museums housing Korean cultural heritage makes it challenging for local audiences to experience traditional Korean cultural content. In this light, the exhibition takes a new approach to surmounting the constraints of hosting artifact-centered exhibitions of Korean art. By presenting immersive video works using the latest digital technology, the stories of cultural heritage can be conveyed vibrantly and engagingly. Moreover, this digital approach can be particularly effective given the deep interest in Korean pop culture, including K-pop and TV shows, among many Filipinos. Through a friendly and familiar digital medium, the exhibition is expected to enjoy a greater public response through this convergence of tradition and modernity. This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Philippines. Endless Landscape: Digitally Reimagined Korean Art  has been organized to commemorate the long-standing friendship between the two countries by expanding the reach of Korean cultural content in the Philippines and promoting mutual exchange. This exhibition kicks off a series of events celebrating this diplomatic anniversary at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, including a Korean Festival and K-drama OST Concert. The accompanying performances to the exhibition will diversify the exhibition’s local impact and visitor experience. In collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines (NCCA), the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines will organize monthly house concerts featuring Filipino artists. NCCA, the country’s official government agency for supporting culture, has provided active support to ensure the exhibition takes place successfully. In this way, the leading cultural institutions of Korea and the Philippines have come together to further strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. A Unique Exhibition of K-Culture Marked by an Intersection of the Past and Present The exhibition presents four video works using new digital technologies produced by the National Museum of Korea and the Chuncheon National Museum. The works – respectively entitled “Endless Mountains and Rivers,” “Royal Processions with the People,” “Pillars of Divinity, Chongseok Rocks,” and “Peonies in Bloom” – are reinterpretations of traditional Korean paintings. This exhibition is significant in that it offers a novel approach through digital content to engage with traditional Korean paintings, which are typically inaccessible without a visit to Korea. Upon entering the gallery, visitors are welcomed by an expansive panorama. Overflowing with light, sound, and brilliant colors, the exhibition space presents an intense sense of immersion.  The National Museum of Korea will continue to carry out further projects and overseas exhibitions as part of its Overseas Korean Galleries Support Program to ensure the preservation and utilization of Korean galleries and cultural heritage located abroad. It is hoped that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for closer engagement with Korean art and culture. The museum will strive to promote Korean culture and strengthen its status through diverse projects that encompass both traditional and contemporary contexts. #digitalart #koreanart #EndlessLandscape #KArt #KCCPhil #KoreanCulturePH

We break down what happened and what made it so entertaining! Spoilers! Full of awkwardness and we love it that way! Like a gust of fresh air from the Han River , Knight Flower is full of weird and awkward moments and we like it just like that! Jo Yeo Hwa ( Honey Lee ) is a noble lady in training during the day and the Joseon "Robin Hood" by night! Just when you think she is armed with the most adorable dimples that can get away with any situation, her very strict mother-in-law, Yoo Geum Ok ( Kim Mi Kyung Welcome to Samdal-ri 2023), has her on a leash! Starting with episode 3, Jo Yeo Hwa tries to be secretive about her night identity, but cannot hold in her urge to help others. Park Soo Ho ( Lee Jong Won ) is a stickler for the law and does whatever it takes to uphold it. Just when you think everything is serious and an action scene is about to erupt, Yeo Hwa makes it super funny and awkward that had us follow out of our chairs! Charity work is important too! We guess the term "noblesse oblige" ( responsibility of privileged people to act with generosity and nobility toward those less privileged) also applies to Joseon noblewomen as well! Unable to hide her good nature, Yeo Hwa, while serving food to the poor, sees a grandmother living in an unstable shack. As the roof of the shack begins to quiver in instability, Yeo Hwa rushes to save her. Before the roof of the shack can cave in onto Yeo Hwa, Park Soo Ho slides in, like the smooth lawman that he is, and saves Yeo Hwa from getting hit by the roof! This being looked at as being "unladylike" back in the Joseon era, Yeo Hwa's mother-in-law quickly steps in to scold her. But not before one of the more senior, and more privileged women, cut her off to praise Yeo Hwa of her selflessness. We love it! The word "luck" isn't in these two characters' vocabulary Onto episode 4! As Park Soo Ho begins to suspect Yeo Hwa as the "Joseon Robin Hood", he begins watching her closely and starts to follow her. After being scolded by Minister Yeom about his lost tiger painting, he seeks out Yeo Hwa to find the real painting that she has stolen. After some words, Yeo Hwa promises to return Lord Yeom's painting, but in an accident, breaks the wooden crossbar and cherry blossom petals fly everywhere! Yeo Hwa and Soo Ho need each other One can get results by breaking the law, the other can use what the results are and turn it into something the law can judge. Yeo Hwa and Soo Ho create a partnership that is beneficial for them both. Yeo Hwa can do whatever is necessary to right wrongs and Soo Ho can step in and "clean up her mess" by using the law to arrest those she catches responsible for the recent child kidnappings. Yeo Hwa divulges her thoughts that Kang Pil Jik is responsible for kidnapping children at the Pil Gambling House. Telling her that Joseon is a "nation governed by law" he will be the one arresting Kang Pil Jik instead. Thus, a new team is formed! Unable to find the missing children at the Pil Gambling House, it is Yeo Hwa's turn to use her methods! Disguised as a very convincing Joseon man, She heads into the devil's lair. She finds that Pil's men are indeed kidnapping the children and selling them for higher interest. Meanwhile, Soo Ho and his superiors cannot find any evidence and are forced to release Kang Pil Jik. It is found out that Kang Pil Jik has friends in high places as he has deep connections to the Royal Court, making him nearly untouchable. We can't wait for the next episodes! At the end of episode 4, just as we thought, there is someone even higher and in control of Kang Pil Jik who is Lord Ji Sung Seok! And cue the curtains! Wow! That's a lot to take in! • What can we learn about love in the finale of "My Demon"?

One of this winter season's hottest K-dramas, My Demon , has finally reached its finale! We talk about what we have learned about love by watching this sizzling romantic/supernatural series! Claiming top awards for actor and actress in a miniseries for romantic/comedy, both Kim You Jung and Song Kang definitely displayed their talents in My Demon ! You could even say that My Demon is a love story with supernatural undertones. As we finished this amazing series, we couldn't help but realize that all characters within this drama were longing to be loved and appreciated (including the side characters)! Love comes in all forms and beings! Despite being from different worlds, Do Do Hee and Jeong Gu Won won't let anyone, including God, stop their love! Do Do Hee came from a parentless household and was adopted by a chaebol (ultimately rich) family and Gu Won is a demon. Despite these differences in beings, they are still able to find love in their relationship. We can tip our hats to that! If you pray hard enough, God will grant you your wish We don't want to throw religion into this, but, according to the drama, Do Do Hee prayed and made a deal with God (the homeless woman) to bring back Gu Won into her life. Throughout the series, God/religion played a strong role in how the characters reacted to certain situations. Everyone needs a little bit of faith in their lives! Christmas is for couples! (in Korea) My Demon definitely proved that Christmas is for couples (in Korea)! If you haven't read our article explaining the details, read it here ! In the West, we celebrate Christmas with our family and loved ones. Usually, we don't go out, but rather stay at home and enjoy the company of those around us. In Korea, not so much. Rather, young Korean couples like to spend the Holiday season together or with their close friends, but since Korean homes are much smaller than Western homes, Koreans tend to spend Christmas outside , usually at a cafe or restaurant, and sometimes at their homes. Do Hee finally got her wish and got to spend her favorite holiday with Gu Won! In a very romantic gesture, Gu Won says, "Now I understand why you are excited about Christmas. You must be my Christmas. I get excited whenever I see you." (Oh the feels!) We also, think that this finale was a month too late, but hey, if you're in the mood, Christmas can be year-round! Parental love is unconditional Although we know that everyone knows this one, a parent's love is unconditional! For example, when Do Hee asks Gu Won about her father's wish, Gu Won explains that he sacrificed his life to save Do Hee's (just when her mother was in labor). Without hearing the conditions, Do Hee's father just accepted whatever consequence it might have been to save his daughter. (Tears) For ten years, Do Hee's parents knew they had limited time together so they made wonderful and meaningful memories together! This brings us to say, "Spend more time with your parents!" You never know when they will be gone! You too, can have a fairytale love ending! If anything we've learned from this drama, everyone can have a fairytale ending, but it comes with a price! The individuals in the relationship must make sacrifices for that relationship to blossom and work! We're not saying that you need to give up your life per se. But making those mini daily sacrifices to make the other person happy is definitely a must! Do Hee and Gu Won's relationship has proved that it isn't perfect, but they are willing to make sacrifices for each other. A feel-good ending! All in all, My Demon was a great drama! There were ups and downs throughout the storyline and we all definitely shed some tears along the way! Comment below what was your favorite moment and what you enjoyed the most! #mydemon #kimyoujung #songkang #romantickoreandrama #romancedrama #whatislove

If you don't know me yet, my name is Gabriella and I am one of the writers here at Dojeon Media! I currently live in Seoul, so the restaurants I have picked will be based around Seoul. I don't like to use this term, but I guess it's the truth I am a "foodie" and love food to my core (literally). Of course, I want to be a hot girl too, but sometimes the delicious food in front of me just takes over my soul, and the deed is done, I have devoured that delicious plate, savoring every flavor and morsel of food! (Of course, let's keep it balanced team!) This month's top cafe is, Drum roll please! Motown, Songpa-gu Situated in a quiet little corner in Songpa-gu, Seoul this cafe will not disappoint. Its aesthetic is somewhat simple and minimalist, but its food screams scrumptious. This area is filled with many modern and trendy restaurants and cafes. I visited with a friend recently and we ordered the Ragu Pasta and Chorizo Melt , along with a Vanilla Bean Latte (to die for) and an Apple Omija Ade ! The atmosphere is calm and gentle, most likely due to its location, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road. On a snowy day, like recently, the warmth that comes from the food and drink here, make it a very comforting experience. Fun Fact: It's called Motown because the owner enjoys Motown music. Here's another post about it: https://app.daytrip.io/space/E365098C-4A3A-4317-A3A4-D95E76CD842A/daylog/61528b9881cad90ce90e878f Here's their Insta: https://www.instagram.com/motown.seoul/ Naver Location: https://map.naver.com/p/entry/place/1716704076 Address: 서울 송파구 백제고분로45길 34-6 1층 101호 Room 101, 1st floor, 34-6 Baekjegobun-ro 45-gil, Songpa-gu, Seoul Seoul's culinary scene is unlike any other! If you're interested in food you can read about Seoul Food Week which we covered HERE . Would you check out Motown? Comment below your thoughts on our cafe of the month! Stay tuned for our next staff pick next month! #cafe #restaurant #seoul #seoullife #seoulfood #foodie

  • Evil has a way of finding itself back into Do Do Hee's life! ["My Demon" Ep. 15 breakdown]

One of our favorite K-dramas of the winter, My Demon , is unfortunately, coming to a conclusion! But just as we are about to wrap up a good-feeling ending, K-dramaland has a way of throwing a wrench into the plot! We break down what happened in episode 15 that had us holding our breaths! Good triumphs over evil? A short while after the disappearance of Noh Suk Min when he falls off the tower by letting go of Jeong Gu Won's ( Song Kang ) hand, everything starts to fall back in place. Do Doo Hee's ( Kim You Jung ) resemblance of a normal life before meeting Gu Won starts to reappear. Meanwhile, Gu Won knows that his time with Do Hee is limited and is pondering how to end things with her. Surprisingly, we're not sure whether Do Hee is oblivious to what Gu Won's true nature as a demon is, she just finds out the meaning of the clocks behind his office are all the contracts he has made with humans and is shocked at the truth. Anyway, Gu Won meets with Do Hee and through a very sad dialogue, tells her that they won't be able to spend Christmas together. Something that Do Hee really wanted to do with him. Without a "goodbye", Gu Won turns around and let's go of Do Hee's hand. Do Hee knows everything! Devastated, Do Hee cries her eyes out and tries to move on with her life. But every morning is a reminder of Gu Won as she wishes him back in her bed and her apartment. She throws herself into her work pretending everything is okay. Unable to control her emotions any longer, she drives to Gu Won's office only to be met with Park Bok Gyu, his assistant. Seeing her grief, he gives her the cross necklace that used to be Gu Won's. Later that night, while sleeping, something magical happens. Do Hee is brought back to the time when she first meets the human Gu Won during the Joseon era! Now she knows everything we know! Noh Suk Min returns from the dead! Just when Do Hee is about to return to the riverside where she met the human form of Gu Won, evil strikes. As she gets into her car in the parking lot of her apartment complex, Noh Suk Min strikes out from her backseat and attacks Do Hee! When Do Hee recovers consciousness, she is bound up and surprised to see that Noh Suk Min has a new face (we kind of think he looks like Two Face from Batman)! Apparently, he burned his own face so that the devil won't be able to find him. Wanting to take revenge, Noh Suk Min stabs Do Hee in the leg in order to get Gu Won to come out from hiding. But before Suk Min has the chance to kill Do Hee, Gu Won appears! Armed with the Devil's rage, Gu Won uses his powers to drop a concrete slab onto Noh Suk Min (even though he knows that if he kills a human, he will burn away). Do Hee begs Gu Won not to kill Suk Min since she is fine and Gu Won removes the concrete block on top of Noh Suk Min. As Do Hee is telling Gu Won that she is "okay", Noh Suk Min emerges with a gun and shoots Do Hee in the back! (Whoa! Where did this come from and how is Noh Suk Min okay after a concrete slab falls on him?) As Do Hee lays unconscious in his arms, he kills Noh Suk Min (or not?) with his powers. Gu Won saves himself With the ultimate sacrifice, Gu Won uses his powers to save Do Hee by sacrificing himself. He claims that he "saved himself" since he wanted to end his being as a demon for the woman he loves! While holding each other, Gu Won burns away. The episode ends with Do Hee crying hysterically. Wow! What do you think will happen in the finale? We can't wait to find out! #mydemon #mydemonep15 #kimyoujung #songkang
