- 7 K-drama Characters Who Totally Deserve Their Own Spin-Off Series
Kim Seon Ho and Wi Ha Joon deserve spin-off series of their own (Image via X/@kdramadaisy and @wihajun_intl) Die-hard K-drama fans know the undeniable impact of supporting characters and second leads. While they may not be the central focus, many of them exude serious main character energy. These roles aren’t just well-written—they’re brought to life with such brilliance by the actors that they become unforgettable, often stealing the spotlight from the leads. Their performances elevate these characters to iconic status, etching them into the hearts and minds of fans forever. With such a strong presence and lasting appeal, it's no wonder fans believe they deserve more than just the sidelines—a spin-off or even a full-fledged series of their own. The following list includes a mix of standout individuals and beloved couples who’ve more than earned their time in the spotlight. Han Ji Pyeong – Start-Up (2020) Kim Seon Ho in a still from Start-Up (Image via tvN) Is anyone even surprised he made the list? Kim Seon Ho ’s standout performance as Han Ji Pyeong—an angel investor and rock-solid mentor—won hearts everywhere and catapulted him into stardom, earning him a devoted fan base. Among the four leads in Start-Up , Han Ji Pyeong arguably had the most definitive character arc and the most emotionally compelling storyline. His bond with halmoni (Korean for grandmother), who served as his guardian, added depth and warmth that resonated deeply with viewers. Fans have long called for a second season centerd on Ji Pyeong and halmoni, wanting to see more of the character who truly felt like the heart of the show. Han Seo Jun – True Beauty (2020-2021) Hwang In Yeop in a still from True Beauty (Image via tvN). Another Han makes the list— Han Seo Jun , portrayed by Hwang In Yeop . Adapted from the popular webtoon of the same name, fans have often pointed out that Hwang In Yeop not only bears an uncanny resemblance to the illustrated version of Han Seo Jun but also embodies his personality with effortless authenticity. His portrayal was so compelling that many fans found themselves less concerned about whether he ended up with Lim Ju Kyung ( Moon Ga Young ) and more invested in seeing Han Seo Jun headline a series of his own. His charm, depth, and untapped story potential make him a perfect candidate for a spin-off. Seo Dan – Crash Landing On You (2019-2020) Seo Ji Hye in a still from Crash Landing On You (Image via tvN). Crash Landing On You ’s elegant second female lead, Seo Dan, is one of those rare K-drama characters who undeniably deserved better. Quiet, fierce, and level-headed, she has harbored feelings for Ri Jeong Hyeok ( Hyun Bin ) since middle school and is even arranged to marry him. But once she realizes his heart belongs to Yoon Se Ri ( Son Ye Jin ), Seo Dan gracefully steps back and tries to move on. Though heartbroken, she eventually falls for the charming Gu Seung Jun ( Kim Jung Hyun )—only for that love story to end in tragedy with his devastating death. Despite the heartbreak, Seo Dan finds the strength to start anew. Fans strongly believe her story deserves a second chance—perhaps even with a new love interest—in a spin-off series of her own. Cha Sung Hoon and Jin Young Seo – A Business Proposal (2022) Kim Min Kyu and Seol In Ah in a still from A Business Proposal (Image via SBS). A Business Proposal is one of those rare shows where the second leads effortlessly upstaged the main couple. Kim Min Kyu and Seol In Ah , who portrayed Cha Sung Hoon and Jin Young Seo—the quintessential best friends of the leads—captured fans’ hearts with their chemistry and charm. Their romance was not only more compelling to many viewers, but also delivered one of the show’s most iconic moments: the unforgettable kiss scene where Sung Hoon takes off his glasses to keep the momentum going. Fans have been vocal about wanting to see a second season focused entirely on Sung Hoon and Young Seo’ s love story. Ji Sang Woo and Na Yu Ri – When The Phone Rings (2024-2025) Heo Nam Jun and Jang Gyu Ri at the press of When The Phone Rings (Image via X/@TheAnnyeongOppa). There’s no denying that the main leads’ sizzling chemistry lit up the screen, but it was the second lead couple—Ji Sang Woo and Na Yu Ri, played by Heo Nam Jun and Jang Gyu Ri —who brought a sweet and endearing charm to the story. While their relationship was heartwarming, it felt like there was so much more left to explore. Fans believe Sang Woo and Yu Ri had untapped potential, and a dedicated spin-off could give their story the depth and screen time it truly deserves. 6. Go Yeong Hun and Park Mi Jung – Undercover High School (2025) Jo Bok Rae and Yoon Ga Yi in a still from Undercover High School (Image via MBC). Anyone who’s watched Undercover High School can vouch for the hilarious chemistry between Jo Bok Rae and Yoon Ga Yi as Go Yeong Hun and Park Mi Jung. This unlikely duo brought laughter and charm to the screen, forming an unexpected bond as they pretended to be a couple for the sake of their mission. From awkward cover-up kisses to genuinely falling in love—complete with a surprise pregnancy announcement—their storyline had all the ingredients of classic K-drama gold . Fans have been vocal in their calls for a spin-off, wanting more screen time and comedic moments from this delightfully quirky pair. Hwang Jun Ho – Squid Game (2021) Wi Ha Joon in a still from Squid Game (Image via Netflix). At this point, nearly every character in Squid Game feels iconic enough to carry their spin-off—and if Netflix ever pursued that idea, they'd be printing money. Among the standout characters, one who truly deserves his series is Hwang Jun Ho, played by Wi Ha Joon. As a determined police detective, Jun Ho infiltrates the deadly game in search of his missing brother, only to discover that he’s none other than The Front Man , portrayed by Lee Byung Hun . A spin-off exploring their backstory, their fractured family dynamic, and the path that led them to opposite sides of the game has the potential to become yet another global hit for Netflix. All of the K-dramas mentioned above are available on popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video. Which of these characters or couples do you think deserves their spin-off series? - "Squid Game" Season 2: The Moments That Had Us Hooked!
We take a look at the global phenomenon, Squid Game Season 2 , and share the best moments that had us hooked as we take a look at the upcoming Season 3 ! Image: Squid Game Season 2 players. Photo: Screenrant.com *Spoilers! The recruiter is killed in a game of Russian Roulette Image: Squid Game Season 2 The Recruiter . Photo: Kdrama.com Like most episodes of Squid Game , after three years off of our screens Season two came back leaving us slipping right back into where we left off three years earlier. Season two, started its first episode with The Recruiter raising the stakes of the deadly games, by not rolling out the barrel after each shot, which meant that the chances of dying go up with each turn a player takes. As it turned out, the bullet was not fired until the sixth and final round which was actually the recruiters turn. Now, despite the death being sudden, the recruiter did pull the trigger and for some sadly died. This was a major shock to fans including myself, and it left a bunch of questions, including who will replace him for the final season of the competition? Gi Hun's secret dental implant tracker was removed Image: Squid Game Season 2 Gi Hun . Photo: Kdrama.com Adamant that he would never join the deadly games again, the lead player Gi Hun surprisingly volunteered to join the games again after his poor attempt to grab the front man. This of course was predictable to most fans of the show, including myself, however his clever move was not, this being a dental implant tracker. With his false tooth still being in his mouth when he arrived back on the island, Gi Huns army of mercenaries had planned to storm the island, in a bid to take down the games, which would have been interesting, however it was shockingly found out that Gi Hun was not actually on the island, once the mercenaries found the tracker, and in fact it was removed out of his mouth and used as fishing bait. This drew us in as it was unexpected, and it highlighted how far ahead the Front Man was compared to Gi Hun, which becomes clearer as the series went on. Betraying Gyeong Su during mingle Image: Squid Game Season 2 screenshot - Episode six 'OX': Betraying Gyeong Su during mingle. This scene stands out as it shows the determination and mentality of the players during Squid Game Season 2 , as they were out to win and all costs. This can be said for a particularly ruthless player during the Mingle round, as Gyeong Su ( Kang Seong Wook ) sets out to ensure that his team advances further into the game, though the team heartlessly reject him with a kick, which leads the rest of the team to victory. This is also made more interesting by the reaction seen on Thanos, once he safely reaches the room. Although he begins to act confused, it also shows the power of the pills that he is taking to help him endure the painful and deadly games, which are not only affecting his memory but also his actions and overall motivations. Was this all part of an act he was putting on? The moment when Lee Myung Gi realizes his poor financial advice has consequences, and Kim Jun Hee is faced with an impossible situation Image: Squid Game Season 2 Lee Myung Gi & Kim Jun Hee. Photo: Still capture This already messed-up game became more shocking when it forced a pregnant woman to play! This showed a new level of how cruel the games could be. Season two showed the gut punch of Im Si Wan's character, a former crypto bro, realizing that his poor financial advice had consequences. This led his now-expecting ex-girlfriend, Kim Jun Hee, to resort to the games herself. They eventually start looking out for each other in the end, so PLEASE let their suffering lead to something good in Season 3. The moment when Young Sik disappointed his mother again Image: Squid Game Season 2 Young Sik and his mother. Photo: Still capture. Season two shared a very touching mother and son storyline, which for many could have been relatable. Yang Dong Geun and Kang Ae Shim showcased this relationship very well, however it was later shown during the games how his massive debts built up further, which led his own mother having to join the hellish games in a desperate bid to win the money and drag her family out a dire financial situation. Why did she do this after he repeatedly let her down? We guess this is because a mother always loves her son, however she did choose the games instead of her own well being! Now, although barley surviving the games, she did also vote to stay in for another round! She deserved so much better and my heart truly did break for her watching these scenes! The Potato Lab (감자연구소) , written by Kim Ho Soo and directed by Kang Il Soo , stars the charismatic duo Lee Sun Bin and Kang Tae Oh in a quirky yet endearing story. At its core, this drama follows a passionate researcher whose peaceful routine is suddenly disrupted by the arrival of a new, rule-abiding director. What begins as a clash of personalities slowly evolves into a heartwarming story of unexpected connection...all in a place dedicated to studying...potatoes. A Series That Embraces Simplicity One of the most charming aspects of The Potato Lab is its refusal to overcomplicate things. It doesn’t try to be a psychological thriller or a melodrama. Instead, it offers viewers something we often forget we need: a bit of joy, a lot of charm, and characters we can genuinely root for. As one fan put it perfectly: “Here’s the thing. #ThePotatoLab is not a show you’re meant to write essays on. It’s mindless fun and the leads are fun and pretty together.” Another viewer described it as: “A mix between Her Private Life and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.. with a tone that’s offbeat, summery, and just plain fun.” And perhaps what many fans appreciate most is how refreshingly drama-free it is: “There was no serial killer, no childhood connection, not even an accidental pregnancy subplot.. which is honestly so rare in K-dramas 🤯🤯” A Gentle Reminder of Why K-Dramas Captivated the World While K-dramas have grown and diversified in recent years, The Potato Lab takes us back to the genre’s roots...light romance, gentle humor, and sincere storytelling. As one fan shared on X: “People forget, but this type of drama is the reason K-dramas became world famous. People watch this for relaxation. It’s feel-good and comforting.” Another viewer expressed their gratitude to the cast: “I loved watching the drama. Thank you for delivering such a good, funny, and entertaining series. Kang Tae-oh and Lee Sun-bin had amazing chemistry from beginning to end. I already miss them. 😭😭” It brings back the feel-good vibes of classic K-dramas.. simple stories, relatable emotions, and charming leads.. we can say that it is the perfect series to binge on a weekend when you need to smile, laugh, and maybe crave some fries. Kang Tae Oh’s return after military service is a win in itself, paired perfectly with the effortlessly funny Lee Sun Bin. All of Us Are Dead Season 2 Release Update! It’s been over two years since All of Us Are Dead first premiered on Netflix, and fans still can’t stop talking about it. Now, with Season 2 officially in the works, the excitement is only growing stronger. Filming for the second season wrapped up in early 2024, and reports suggest a late 2025 or early 2026 release. Though Netflix has yet to confirm a final date, but has already released teasers that hint that the story will return even darker and more complex than before. Fans can also expect returning cast members like Park Ji Hu (On Jo), Lomon (Su Hyeok), and Yoon Chan Young (Cheong San)—with rumors suggesting at least one major twist surrounding a previously “dead” character. - Here's Our Top 5 K-dramas For This Summer
#kdramalist #kdramas #koreandramas Summer is upon us and if you live in the East Asia region, it's monsoon season, perfect for staying inside and catching up on the latest Korean dramas! Here's our list of the top 5 K-dramas that you should be watching! 5. Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area Native Title: 종이의 집: 공동경제구역 Also Known As: House of Paper: Joint Economic Area Screenwriter: Ryu Yong Jae, Kim Hwan Chae, Choi Sung Jun Director: Kim Hong Sun Genres: Action, Heist, Drama, Crime Episodes: 6 Where to watch: Netflix A remake of the original Spanish La Casa de Papel, Money Heist: Korea follows a group of robbers assembled by criminal mastermind "The Professor" to pull off the biggest heist in reunified Korean history. With hostages trapped inside the royal mint and the police right outside, the crew must band together to find a way to pull it off. Our Opinion. The original Spanish version of Money Heist is hard to beat. And with such high expectations, we don't anticipate this series to top the original especially if it is following the storyline very accurately. It does have some Korean-influenced scenes throughout the series, but not enough to launch it to the top position. 4. Alchemy of Souls Native Title: 환혼 Also Known As: Soul Marriage, Return Screenwriter: Hong Jung Eun, Hong Mi Ran Director: Park Joon Hwa Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Period, Action Episodes: 20 Where to watch: Netflix A tale about a dangerous assassin, Naksu, whose soul gets accidentally trapped inside the body of a physically weak Mu Deok. Mu Deok is sold to servitude to the noble Jang household where she meets Jang Wook andd becomes his servant. Eventually, Mu Deok teaches Jang Wook how to fight. Our Opinion. A fun period drama with K-pop idol-looking cast! There are scenes of comedic relief woven in between action and brewing romance between the main characters. The series has a good storyline, but just not enough to crack our top three. 3. Why Her Native Title: 왜 오수재인가 Also Known As: Why Her? Screenwriter: Kim Ji Eun Director: Park Soo Jin Genres: Mystery, Melodrama, Legal, Romance Episodes: 16 Where to watch: Dramacool Coldhearted lawyer, Oh Soo Jae , the youngest partner of South Korea's best law firm, TK Law Firm, gets caught up in an unexpected case and is demoted to an adjunct professor position at Seojung University law school. She falls for one of her students, Gong Chan, who is an exceptional student and cares for her deeply. They team up with other law students to take down corruption at society's highest level. Our Opinion. Great acting with a good cast of characters. Although the age differences between the main characters are cause for concern, it doesn't take away from the storyline and makes sense. A strong independent woman character always makes for a good drama especially if the male lead is there only as a backup. Include a great storyline and it will crack top 3 on our list! 2. Insider Native Title: 인사이더 Also Known As: Insider Screenwriter: Moon Man Se Director: Min Yeon Hong Genres: Action, Suspense, Thriller Episodes: 16 Where to watch: Dramacool Kim Yo Han works as a judicial apprentice. He is just starting his career when he is given an undercover assignment to bust an illegal gambling ring in Seoul but isn't able to capture Chairman Yang, the top leader of The Skin Nation. Because of this, his superiors, Mok Jin Hyung and Noh Young Guk suggest that he pose as a prisoner to get film evidence from Chairman Yang's right-hand man, Lee Tae Gwang, which is currently serving a prison sentence. Once in prison, Yo Han must find a way to accomplish his mission while surviving his fellow prison mates, the ones he put away. Our Opinion. Action, suspense, drama. What more can you ask for from a prison drama. With tons of action and backstabbing while in the can, the cliché innocent main character has to fight his way out to survive and get his revenge. With lots of plot twists and flashbacks, this series is unpredictable and exciting to watch! 1. Eve Native Title: 이브 Also Known As: Eve's Scandal Screenwriter: Yoon Young Mi Director: Park Bong Seop Genres: Melodrama, Revenge Episodes: 16 Where to watch: Dramacool A story of a vengeful daughter, Lee La El, whose father dies unexpectedly due to corporate corruption and greed. She prepared for 13 years to take her revenge on the chaebol family who tore her family apart. With the help of a young National Assemblyman, she vows to take revenge on the richest family in South Korea. Our Opinion. Without any expectations, this surprisingly became number one on our list! There are a few scenes where some of the characters' actions were a little over the top, but given the situation, it is to be expected. How the main character plans her revenge thickens the plot and has us wanting more! A must-watch! How did we do? Did we miss out on any of your favorite dramas? Best Drama - When Life Gives You Tangerines The official poster for When Life Gives You Tangerines (Image via Netflix). Who else deserved it: Lovely Runner There’s no denying that When Life Gives You Tangerines is a beautifully crafted and emotionally moving drama. However, Lovely Runner , starring Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon , could have easily taken home the award as well. The drama resonated deeply with audiences with its heartfelt storytelling, sensitive portrayal of mental health, and standout performances. Romantic dramas rarely receive top honors at major award shows, but Lovely Runner broke through cultural barriers and had a significant global impact, making it a worthy contender for the win. Best Actor – Ju Ji Hoon: The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call Ju Ji Hoon in a still from The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call . (Image credits: Netflix) Who else deserved it: Han Suk Kyu - Doubt There’s no doubt that Ju Ji Hoon delivered a powerful performance as trauma specialist Baek Kang Hyuk. However, Han Suk Kyu was equally exceptional in Doubt , portraying top criminal profiler Jang Tae Su - a single father whose world is shaken when he suspects his daughter’s involvement in a case he's investigating. The role demanded emotional depth, restraint, and moral complexity, and Han Suk Kyu rose to the challenge with the finesse only a veteran actor can bring. Doubt showcased his decades-long mastery of the craft, making him a strong contender for the award. Best Actress – Kim Tae Ri: Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born Kim Tae Ri in a still from Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born (Image Credits: tvN) Who else deserved it: IU - When Life Gives You Tangerines Kim Tae Ri continues to prove she’s one of the most accomplished actresses of her generation, delivering a powerful and emotionally rich performance in Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born . However, many fans were disappointed that IU did not take the award home. In When Life Gives You Tangerines , she portrayed both the mother and daughter versions of her character with exceptional depth and grace. Her performance was certainly one for the ages. Best New Actor – Choo Young Woo: The Tale of Lady Ok Choo Young Woo in a still from The Tale of Lady Ok (Image Credits: JTBC) Who else deserved it: Cha Woo Min - Study Group Choo Young Woo had a standout year, impressing audiences with his performances in both The Tale of Lady Ok and The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call . His growing range and screen presence mark him as one of the most exciting emerging talents in the Korean entertainment industry. That said, Cha Woo Min also delivered a breakout performance as the sharp and menacing Pi Han Wool in the gritty young adult drama Study Group . His intensity and control on screen stood out, making a strong case for recognition in the Best New Actor category. Best New Actress – Chae Won Bin: Doubt Chae Won Bin in a still from Doubt (Image Credit: MBC) Who else deserved it: Jo Yoon Soo - The Tyrant It’s an exciting era for young actresses in the Korean entertainment industry, with a wider range of complex, dynamic roles being written than ever before. Chae Won Bin delivered a strong performance in Doubt as a daughter harboring a dark secret that threatens to unravel her bond with her father. However, Jo Yoon Soo also gave a standout performance in The Tyrant as Chae Ja Gyeong, a cold yet compelling assassin entrusted with a critical mission. Acting alongside heavyweights like Kim Seon Ho , Kim Kang Woo, and Cha Seung Won , Jo Yoon Soo held her own with remarkable poise and presence, firmly establishing herself as a rising talent to watch.
