- 6 Noona (Older Women, Younger Men) K-Dramas That Redefine Romance! [Must-Watch!]
The official poster for Bon Appétit, Your Majesty (Image via tvN). “ Noona ” is a Korean term used by men to refer to an older woman, and in the world of K-dramas, noona romances explore relationships between older women and younger men. Korean dramas have long pioneered this genre, normalizing the idea that love transcends age. These stories beautifully highlight how an older woman can be just as charming, confident, and desirable to her younger romantic partner. Here are six defining noona K-dramas that capture this unique dynamic and prove that when it comes to true love, age is just a number. Bon Appétit, Your Majesty (2025) The official trailer for Bon Appetit, Your Majesty (Video via Netflix K-Content). The latest noona romance drama serves up a delightful blend of romantic comedy, political intrigue, and mouthwatering cuisine. Talented chef Yeon Ji-yeong ( YoonA ) suddenly finds herself transported back to the Joseon era, where she encounters Emperor Lee Yi-heon—a ruler notorious for his tyrannical ways but equally famous for his insatiable love of good food. Their first meeting is anything but sweet, sparking heated banter and sharp clashes. Yet, as savory dishes begin to bridge the gap between them, romance starts to simmer. Still, lurking conspiracies and the question of time itself may threaten to keep them apart. Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is best described as Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo wrapped in the comedic charm of Mr. Queen —a fun, flavorful drama you won’t want to miss! No Gain No Love (2024) The official trailer for No Gain No Love (Video via CJ ENM Global). This hilarious rom-com follows office worker Son Hae-yeong ( Shin Min-A ), who refuses to miss out on a lucrative job promotion. To secure her chances, she hatches a wild plan—convincing the handsome yet introverted cashier Kim Ji-wook (Kim Young-dae) to pose as her husband in a fake marriage scheme. If you’re looking for a drama that’s fun, over-the-top, and every bit as outrageous as Hae-yeong’s idea, No Gain No Love is the perfect pick. P.S. Fans can also enjoy a short spin-off, Spice Up Our Love , starring Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun . Cinderella at 2 AM (2024) The official trailer for Cinderella at 2 AM (Video via Viu Philippines). Ever heard of a Cinderella who wants to run away from her Prince Charming? That’s exactly the twist in this refreshing K-drama. Shin Hyun-been stars as Ha Yoon-seo, a confident, capable woman who seems to have it all—an impressive career, financial independence, and self-sufficiency. The only thing she struggles with? Dating. Enter Seo Joo-won ( Moon Sang-min ), a charismatic, wealthy third-generation chaebol who also happens to be part of Yoon-seo’s team. While he pursues her with undeniable charm, Yoon-seo finds herself unable to return his feelings. A decidedly unlike-Cinderella tale, this drama blends fairytale magic with classic K-drama fun, offering a fresh and witty spin on romance. The Midnight Romance in Hagwon (2024) The official trailer for The Midnight Romance in Hagwon (Video via CJ ENM Global). Teacher-student romances are often seen as controversial, but when handled with care and the right intention, they can unfold into a touching love story. Inspired by real events, the drama follows Seo Hye-jin ( Jung Ryeo-won ), a star tutor with over fifteen years of experience and a quietly competitive, never-give-up spirit. A decade later, Lee Jun-ho ( Wi Ha-joon )—once her student—returns, this time as a determined suitor intent on winning her heart. Beyond the classroom, their romance quietly takes root under the cover of night in Daechi-dong Academy (Hagwon). Tender, thoughtful, and heartfelt, The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is a sweet watch. Romance is a Bonus Book (2019) The official trailer for Romance is a Bonus Book (Video via Netflix) What makes this drama stand out is that it’s not just a noona romance—it also shines a light on how unkind society can be to women in their forties. It explores the stereotypes that label them as “too old” or “undesirable” for younger, handsome men in their thirties, while also questioning the belief that they’re incapable of handling demanding careers, leadership roles, and the delicate balance of work, relationships, and family life. With nuanced commentary on pay disparity and gender equality in the workplace, the drama is as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming. If you love noona romances, literature, and dreamy friendship-turned-love scenarios, Romance is a Bonus Book is a must-watch. P.S. Fun fact: Lee Jong-suk once admitted that Lee Na-young , who plays his love interest here, was his longtime celebrity crush and ideal type. Something in the Rain (2018) The official trailer for Something in the Rain (Video via Viu Singapore). Falling in love with your best friend’s younger brother could be scandalous, but Something in the Rain approaches this noona romance trope with warmth, maturity, and tenderness. Son Ye-jin stars as Jin-ah, who unexpectedly develops feelings for her best friend’s younger brother, Seo Jun-hui ( Jung Hae-in ), after a painful breakup. Jun-hui supports her as a friend through heartbreak, and gradually, their hearts find a way to each other. The drama beautifully humanizes the romance, exploring themes of second chances, open-mindedness, and acceptance of unconventional relationships—particularly the older woman-younger man dynamic. Slow-burning and deeply heartfelt, Something in the Rain resonates with emotion and authenticity. Which of these noona romance dramas is your favorite? - Kim Soo Hyun Hits Back at Financial Trouble Claims: "We Did Not Fail to Pay"
Kim Soo Hyun responds to claims of unpaid fees in ongoing lawsuit. We uncover the latest news in the ongoing actor's lawsuit with Kim Sae Ron's family. Image: Kim Soo Hyun & Kim Sae Ron - Photo: me.marshable.com Setting the record straight, Kim Soo Hyun's side has denied financial woes circulating after a lawsuit delay, explaining that full payment was indeed made and an address error caused the court extension. What's the latest? Ever had a frustrating issue with paperwork? Kim Soo Hyun's legal team found themselves in a similar spot with their defamation lawsuit against the late Kim Sae Ron's family and YouTube channel GaroSero. A discrepancy in their initial filing led to a request for more time on the court fees. Then came the rumors – the kind that spread like wildfire – suggesting they'd missed the deadline, maybe even hinting at financial trouble. It's like when you get a bill wrong and suddenly everyone thinks you can't pay! But now, Soo Hyun's side is saying, "Hold on a minute, that's not the full story." They've come out to firmly state that everything has been paid, and the lawsuit is still very much on track. "Untrue": Kim Soo Hyun Addresses Financial Strain Claims Just when you thought the drama surrounding Kim Soo Hyun couldn't get any more intense, his legal team has stepped forward to set the record straight on a crucial point: money. Amidst the ongoing fallout from rumors about his past with the late actress Kim Sae Ron – whispers that spiraled into serious allegations – Soo Hyun's legal representatives at LKB & Partners have vehemently denied any financial missteps in the ensuing lawsuit. "We paid every single court fee and delivery charge," they declared via YTN Star, cutting through the speculation. The real reason for the court deadline extension? A simple, albeit frustrating, address mix-up, not a failure to pay a single won. This legal saga ignited after online chatter, amplified by the YouTube channel GaroSero and even Kim Sae Ron's family, suggested a relationship with Soo Hyun when she was allegedly underage – claims the Queen of Tears star fiercely refuted in a prior press conference, stating their romance was brief and occurred only after she reached adulthood. Now, to safeguard his reputation from these swirling accusations, his agency has announced a hefty 12 billion KRW (around 8.16 million USD) defamation lawsuit, adding another layer to this already captivating story. Courtroom Confusion: Kim Soo Hyun's Legal Team Explains Payment Row and Delay A curious detail emerged from the Seoul Central District Court on April 17th: Kim Soo Hyun's legal team stumbled on a significant paperwork snag. While they initially sought a hefty 12 billion KRW in damages, the court's records showed only 11 billion KRW (approximately 7.77 million USD) registered. The directive from the court was clear: fix the 1 billion KRW discrepancy and resubmit the file, along with the adjusted court fees, estimated at around 38 million KRW (roughly 26,700 USD) based on the claim amount. Instead of promptly rectifying the issue, Soo Hyun's team waited until the very last day of their one-week deadline – April 16th – to request an extension. This eleventh-hour move raised eyebrows, with legal experts suggesting it might be a strategic pause to re-evaluate their legal strategy. This news further fueled existing rumors about financial strain at Kim Soo Hyun's agency, Gold Medalist, particularly after an insider's comments and reports of suspended contracts with external cleaning services hinted at tight finances. Final thoughts We've all experienced that moment of uncertainty when a project gets delayed or a deal falls through. Now, imagine that on a massive scale. For Kim Soo Hyun, once the king of K-drama endorsements , reports are surfacing of over 20 deals vanishing, potentially leading to a hefty 22 billion KRW in cancellation penalties. And if that wasn't enough, his highly anticipated Disney+ series, Knock-Off , has been indefinitely suspended, leaving his future involvement – and potential further financial repercussions – hanging in the balance. It makes you think about how quickly things can change, even for the most successful. Let's talk about this! What are your thoughts on the unfolding events? - Idols Cast On Trendy LGBT Shows? We Show You Who!
South Korea is a rather conservative country when it comes to some social issues . Whether it is mental health, drug use, the impaired, or even the LGBT community, generally these things are not discussed in polite company or ever on TV. This is why it always such a scandal when something about an idol or a celebrity comes out about one of these issues. Idols are supposed to be ideal members of society reflecting of the perfect ideal of what Korea can offer the world. So why are Idols starring in LGBT shows and movies these days? Well, social issues have become more trendy in dramas in the last couple of years. Dramas about mental illness, like It's Okay, That's Love , have been coming out in recent years launching the discussion of these things from the shadows and into the primetime light. This year Extraordinary Attorney Woo is one of the nation's most popular dramas that stars an autistic character and has themes about autism and what that entails for the average Korean. This has no doubt opened doors to be able to tell any story that writers have not dared to tell before. Social issue dramas have become a part of a cultural revolution that when paired with the international rise in popularity of webtoons with these plot lines and the preserving force of LGBT celebrities, such as Hong Seok Cheon , who have come out to fight for acceptance in Korea has created a perfect storm for LGBT stories to come to light in dramas and shows. Hong co-hosts Merry Queer , an up-in-coming reality show where Koreans can come out to the world through the show. It joins other reality shows such as Man's Romance which has gotten more reaction for how handsome the boys are than negativity. Webtoons have always been popular in Korea, but even more so in the times of COVID as everyone suddenly had more time to themselves. And now these stories are being produced into web series, dramas, and movies. While there have been LGBT nuances and side plots without explicitly open relationships in dramas, such as Coffee Prince and The King's Affection . These are usually not the focus outside of a few movies, like Night Flight , that perform well on the festival circuit. Now they are the focus of dramas on TV for the whole family to view. The drama Semantic Error is a prime example. This manhwa-based drama focuses on the relationship of an artist who has to work together for a dreaded group project with an engineer and falls in love. It is a typical frenemies storyline that isn't new to popular romantic dramas, but the LGBT nature is. The drama was ridiculously popular to the point of breaking records and even spawning a movie that's first screenings have already sold out in Korea. The drama stars two idols, Park Seo Ham from KNK and Park Jaechan of DKZ . This isn't the only LGBT-themed drama starring idols coming out these days. Tinted With You was a 2021 drama starring Jun of A.C.E. and Unintentional Love Story is an up-in-coming drama starring Gongchan of B1A4 . Outside of these, there are several LGBT-themed shows coming out in general. Where Your Eyes Linger is another popular drama that stars model actors. Why are idols starring in these dramas? Well, these idols are usually in smaller groups that need more exposure. - End of an era?! Why has Jeju's infamous Fire Festival been cancelled?
The famous Korean island Jeju , known for it's volcanic volcanoes held a fire festival each March, but critics have managed to get the event cancelled in the name of a "Climate Crisis". We talk more about this infamous festival and what to expect in the future! Image: Visit Jeju So what is Jeju's fire festival? Since the 1990's, the Korean island of Jeju has welcomed visitors both domestically and internationally to the island each March to celebrate the start of spring, by setting fire to the slops of one of its famous active volcanoes. Let's check out this clip from a previous festival! Why did the fire festival come about? Reinterpreting the cattle farming traditions of the small Korean island of Jeju in a modern sense, the festivals routes came from an ancient tradition called Bangae . Bangae is a traditional method of burning down fields during the time between later winter and early spring, as it renews the grass and gets rid of vermin before cattle graze the rich pastures of the active volcanic landscape. Image: Jeju fire festival - Lewis Hooper Image: Jeju fire festival - Lewis Hooper So what are the environmental impacts? One one hand, burning down fields, although it can lower the risk of natural wildfires, it does result in a worse air quality, and this has been the center of the debate. Some residents say that some small level of environmental damage should be allowed in order to preserve the tradition, and attract visitors to the island since tourist numbers post covid have decreased, however others have suggested that as Jeju island has many UNESCO heritage sites , it is better to avoid any damage to the island, and remember the tradition in other ways. Will the fire festival be held in 2025? For the past three years, since the end of COVID-19 the event has been on hold due to safety and environmental concerns, and whether or not it will return in March 2025, has been a hot topic among locals and local governments, and has not yet been decided. Let us know if you have ever attended Jeju's fire festival in the comments below, and tag us in your photos! #jeju #jejuisland #korea #southkorea #koreatravel #firefestival #climatecrisis

- Your Ultimate Guide to Surviving (and Enjoying) Winter in Korea! [From Food to Clothing, We Have You Covered!]
We have the essential packing lists, must-try hot street foods, and tips for staying warm during the coldest months in South Korea. The Dojeon Media Team has you covered! Image: Seoul during Winter - Photo: 10mag.com Winter in Korea is notoriously cold, and although shops like Diaso sell hand packs and thermals for very affordable prices, are they enough to keep you from freezing? In this article, we will focus on how to stay warm this winter! Clothing & Layering Essentials Korea is cold during winter, and no matter how many layers you wear, you will still feel it! Therefore, layering is non-negotiable if you want to survive Korean winters. The key here is to start with base thermals and layer from there. Long padding (long-padded jackets) is also highly recommended by us, as this ankle-length padding will shield you from top to bottom and really help you brave strong winds. Wearing a hat and gloves adds heat security, we know from experience. Heating and Home Comfort This is the most important thing to survive winter! Most Korean houses have an underfloor heating system called 'ondol', which will heat you from the bottom up and at the same time provide a cozy winter feel. Another hack to stay warm and cozy at home is to consider buying an electric blanket. Lewis Hooper from the Dojeon team has used one in the UK in the past and said that it was a lifesaver, especially if you are prone to having a damp room . A lot of older Korean homes also tend to use bubble wrap on their windows to prevent drafts from coming in, and at the same time, it is an inexpensive solution to try and keep your house warm. Food for Warmth Food is another great idea if you want to keep warm during the winter, and Korea has some amazing winter foods ! Some of the traditional warm foods are literally a lifesaver, and for the most part, they are cheap and can be found on most streets. Dishes like Kimchi Jjigae or Sundubu Jjigae are spicy and served boiling, providing immediate internal warmth. On the corner of most streets, you can find vendors selling treats like Hotteok (sweet sugar pancakes) or Odeng (fish cake skewers in broth) to enjoy while walking, and these are popular with locals and tourists alike. One of Lewis Hooper's favorites is Yuja-cha ( a citron tea) or Saenggang-cha (ginger tea), which are popular Korean winter remedies to help prevent colds and warm your insides. These remedies are the perfect mix to fight off colds and at the same time they both taste great! Final thoughts Korean winters are amazing with the blue skies and endless winter activities; however, they are brutally cold and long. Hand packs are a Dojeon go-to for staying warm, while at the same time drinking hot tea while roaming the beautiful streets of Korea. Our favorite go-to dish is Kimchi jjigae, a must-try on your Korean adventure this winter! How do you prepare for winter in Korea? Comment below and let the Dojeon Media Team know! #KoreanWinterSurvival #LongPaddingLife #HeatTechEssentials #SeoulWinter #KWinterTips #OndolWarmth
