CDs have literally been around for decades, and for most of us, they became outdated thanks to the MP3 or digital downloads. So why has there been a sudden resurgence of CDs recently? 2026 is the peak streaming era, and while carrying a disc has not yet moved to a full-blown trend, the high visibility and aesthetics have become popular. So let's check out why!

The Accessory of the Moment

As big tech continues to grow, Gen Z is looking for simpler things in life. CDs and DVDs were moved from living rooms to bins; they are now moving back into the home. The iridescent sheen of a disc serves as a futuristic neutral that complements the high-gloss, synthetic fabrics currently dominating the runway. While many K-pop acts and K-dramas have had a more retro feel during their popularity.

The Experience

As more people get fed up with 'big tech', many of us want that old-school feel. These days, many people suffer from ADHD or anxiety, which was sadly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. There has since been a real value in having something with a mechanical "click", and a CD player certainly does that. This sensory engagement from a CD player provides a grounded, mindful alternative to the often mundane touch screens and mindless online scrolling.

The K-Pop Catalyst

Thanks to the rise of K-pop globally, it has literally kept the once-outdated CD on the minds of many. While streaming your favorite songs is a quick and easy thing to do, for many, unboxing and clicking the play button is often a way for K-pop fans to feel more connected to what they are listening to.

That, mixed with the rise of one-off album covers and limited-edition idol merchandise, has led to the CD rising in sales globally. Some of these "unboxing" traditions have gone mainstream, driving a global demand for hardware that can actually play the discs tucked inside the photobooks. For some of the Dojeon Media team, we remember waiting outside the music store for new CD releases and signing events! So we totally understand why they are finding their way back into the market.

K-Pop Acts With the Highest CD Sales

Early 2026 has seen an increase in CD sales thanks to K-pop acts. Seventeen currently holds the record for the highest-selling K-pop album of all time with 6,392,515 copies for their 2023 release, FML.

BTS made their historic comeback in early 2026, and this has also shifted the landscape. Their latest studio album, Arirang, sold a staggering 3.98 million copies on its first day alone and has already crossed the 4.75 million mark as of March 2026, which is expected to continue to rise.

Final Thoughts

The Dojeon Media team really loves the nostalgic feel that CDs bring to the table. It is less about returning to the past but more about having that classic good feeling. Also, by turning what is often viewed as 'outdated' tech into something more modern, it opens it up for a new generation to enjoy what was once a high-tech item during its peak. Can K-pop really help bring back old tech like it has with the humble CD?
