- What You Should Know About Korea’s Hoesik (Drinking) Culture
#Hoesik #KoreanCulture You probably have seen a lot of scenes from K-drama wherein Koreans flock together to eat out after work. This unique Korean culture is called ' hoesik ' (회식). Let's take a closer look at this interesting subculture of many workplaces in Korea! The Korean hoesik culture has been around since the Joseon dynasty and is still an active part of Korean culture. Though gatherings as such have their own set of benefits, we're also here to break down some of the downsides of this popular subculture in many workplaces. Koreans are regarded as workaholics, the work environment for many can be stressful and oftentimes draining. Workplaces have their way of reducing the stress and tension of their subordinates through the hoesik culture. The subculture of many companies or organizations in Korea aims to promote camaraderie with their fellow workers and lax any tension or conflict between employees or bosses. But in the long run, the good things that come with this subculture can be overshadowed by its downsides, and here are some of them! Money Do you know that hoesik or eating out, in general, takes up a large portion of many Koreans' hard-earned salary? According to research, Koreans spend roughly half of their food budget on eating out. In the latest index published in April of this year, the cost of eating out soared by 6.6% in South Korea. With this ongoing inflation, people are becoming more hesitant to dine out and becoming more conscious of their spending. Health '"Health is wealth" as many folks say. The financial aspect of Koreans is not only affected by this subculture but also by their health. Drinking alcohol is part of the hoesik culture, which reflects the data on large alcohol consumption and alcohol-caused illness in South Korea. Based on data collected by mid-2020, the percentage of Koreans ages 19 and above drinking alcohol totaled 74.1%. Four years before the former data was mentioned the tallies of the following alcohol-related illness are as follows: 4,590 liver cirrhosis death, 1,884 road traffic deaths, and 5,389 cancer deaths. With the pandemic still ongoing, 72.7% of big firms in South Korea support the remote working setup. The remote setup and other modes of work also resulted positively for many, allowing them to live healthily and have more time for themselves. In a poll conducted last year 44.9% of those who are in their 20s and 30s expressed that they want their respective companies and colleagues to refrain from hoesik even after the pandemic. We can notice how Korean society and its culture are evolving through the data and indexes mentioned and we expect more of it in the coming years. There are many more benefits and downsides we can add to the list but we would like to know your experience of eating out culture in your workplace. Let us know what you love and dislike about it!

- 4 Reasons Why Netflix's "Seoul Vibe" Grinds Our Gears
#netflixmovie #seoulvibes #kmoviereview Netflix's most recent adrenaline-pumping, car-chasing, Fast and Furious -like Korean film falls flat! Here are our four reasons why Seoul Vibe grinds our gears! Rating 3/5 Released on August 26, 2022, Netflix's attempt to create a Korean version of Fast and Furious was difficult to watch and hard to finish. Taking place during the Seoul 1988 Olympics, a team of drivers and mechanics called the Sanggye Supreme Team are thrust into a VIP slush fund operation to deliver and find illegal funds all around the city. Led by Park Dong Wook ( Yoo Ah In Hellbound 2021), an amazing driver who wishes to go to the United States to become a professional driver, the ensemble of young misfits are thrown into precarious situations they have no control over. The other members of the team are Oh Woo Sam ( Ko Gyung Pyo Love in Contract 2022), a DJ and all-around do-it-all friend, Park Yoon Hee ( Park Ju Hyun Love All Play 2022), Woo Sam's younger biker sister and leader of the biggest biker club in Seoul, Bok Nam ( Lee Kyu Hyung All of Us Are Dead 2022), a master navigator of the streets of Seoul, and Joon Ki ( Ong Seong Wu More Than Friends 2020), a mechanic and handyman. Check out the Netflix trailer! Although the trailer looked promising with all the action intended to put the audience on the edge of their seats, a deeper look into the movie says otherwise. Here are our reasons why you should skip Seoul Vibe ! 1. Great casting but no delivery. The beginning of the story looked promising, a group of young misfits with no direction gets offered to make more money than they can imagine doing the thing they love best, driving. But as the movie wears on, the chemistry between the characters is believable, but just doesn't have the spark needed to carry on through the long two-hour movie. 2. A failed attempt to recreate the 80's. You would believe that a Netflix-backed production would have believability built into the set and numerous scenes right? Not this one! With Korean popular culture diving back into the 80's such as Twice 's new single " Talk that Talk " it seems that all K-pop and K-dramas want in on the action. Many of the scenes in the movie seemed like the actors were on set. Other than the actors' clothing and the cars they were driving, the movie didn't seem believable enough for us to really get into their roles. 3. The wardrobe was atrocious. Again, the theme of the 80s would seem simple enough to find clothing for the actors to "make it their own", but Seoul Vibe 's attempt to throw together random brands that existed in the 80s doesn't seem like they focused too much on each character's style. We'll admit that there are some outfits that belong in the 80s but much of the wardrobe seems forced with no real style. Another point would be the characters' hairstyles. The hairstyles worn in the movie are not representative of Seoul during the 1980s at all! Many Koreans that watched this movie didn't believe these hairstyles existed therefore we think it might have been Netflix's attempt to bridge a younger audience. 4. We just got bored. We'll admit it was a little hard to sit through this two-hour marathon! The storytelling was "ok" at best and simple to follow, but not original. With so many quality K-dramas and K-cinema dropping this year, there are many better stories to choose from. Our Conclusion There are so many better K-dramas and K-movies out there right now that it will be ok if you just skip this one! Of course, if you have an extra two hours of free time, Seoul Vibe won't hurt to help you get a power nap in! Let us know if you enjoyed this movie and your thoughts! We would love to hear from you!

Binch Biscuits Another best-selling snack in the Korean market is Lotte 's Chocolate Binch Biscuits. The chocolate-coated biscuit is also available in mocha flavor. - What Price Is Right? For Korean Fried Chicken?
#koreanfriedchicken #friedchicken #southkorea With the rising cost of living due to the country's highest inflation rate in years, Koreans are flocking to their local supermarkets in droves to queue up for their beloved fried chicken. The country's top three largest supermarket chains E-mart , Homeplus , and Lotte Mart have started slashing prices on fried chicken buckets for a limited amount. Koreans have left no stone unturned to find the cheapest price for their fried chicken, including in supermarkets. Customers stood in lines up to an hour before stores opened in hopes to get their hands on a bucket of fried chicken. One woman in her 60s, Kyung Ja (not real name) stood in line among 40 other people outside an E-mart waiting for her turn to buy a bucket for ₩5,980 ($4.47). E-mart has been selling a limited quantity of chicken twice a day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.- between 40 - 50 buckets - in a promotional event that started last week. (Korean Herald) The top three biggest Korean fried chicken chains BBQ, BHC, and Kyochon have been increasing their costs by ₩1,000 - ₩2,000 for similar-sized buckets. Those buckets usually cost around ₩20,000 ($14.98), far higher than the local supermarkets mentioned above. Add delivery and application fees on top of that, and a bucket of chicken can cost around ₩25,000 ($18.72) have Koreans outraged. According to experts, "₩20,000 ($14.98) appears to be a psychologically significant level for Koreans, largely due to the perception of fried chicken as soul food for all – rich or poor." (Korean Herald) “Koreans love fried chicken not just for its taste, but for its more affordable price compared to pork and beef.” - Kim Tae-ki, an economics professor at Dankook University, Seoul What's a fair price for chicken? Given the recent economic impact, the price hike is understandable. The real question is how chicken franchises and delivery apps find ways to create lower costs for their customers, a scholar suggested. In 2021, the nation's top three major fried chicken franchises amassed a combined revenue of 1.3 trillion won ($973 billion), up 15% from a year earlier! So how can fried chicken prices go through the roof although the price of raw chicken has remained relatively the same (only a ₩460 or $0.34 in the past decade)? Although the cost of raw chicken has not increased over the last decade, the price of other ingredients, rent, and labor has increased. As of Aug 7, the price of flour rose 36.4% while cooking oil prices rose 55.6%, according to Statistics Korea. Many mom-and-pop chicken owners are feeling the blowback from supermarket chains lowering the prices of their fried chicken buckets. Local owners are complaining that their stores cannot compete with rock bottom prices and have been losing customers to those stores. Check out this crazy vlog about "Dangdang Chicken"! Have you tried Korean fried chicken? If so, what is your favorite? Let us know! Source
