- This is Why You Should Be Watching "Little Women"!
#littlewomen #kdramareview #netflix Netflix and tvN 's highly anticipated drama Little Women took first place in national viewership ratings this opening weekend, according to Nielsen Korea. The 12-episode mystery family drama debuted on September 3 during the 21:10 time slot. We break down why this drama has us hooked right from the beginning! Spoiler Alert! 4.6/5 Starting off as a wholesome family of four women, three daughters, and a mother, living as a working-class family, episode one portrays the characters in this drama as independent women trying to improve their busy lives by dedicating their time to their jobs and roles as a model high school student. The series stars Kim Go Eun ( Yumi's Cells 2021 - 2022) as Oh In Joo the oldest of three sisters brought up in a poor environment. The second oldest sister, Oh In Kyung Nam Ji Hyun ( The Witch's Diner 2021) the middle sister, is an enthusiastic reporter at a local news station. The youngest sister, Oh In Hye Park Ji Hu ( All of Us Are Dead 2021), is a student at a prestigious arts high school and has a knack for painting. We are immediately taken into the daily lives of each character as the series starts off during In Hye's birthday. In Joo and In Kyung both saved up money to send In Hye on her high school field trip to Europe. Their mother does not agree with them and runs off with their hard-earned money in the middle of the night. Frustrating sets in on the girls as they both find ways to get money from their friends from work to cover the trip fees despite the pleading from In Hye to drop the matter. Interestingly enough, we find out that both In Joo and In Kyung are outcasts at their respective workplaces, making it very uncomfortable for them to ask their co-workers for an advance in payment for the month. This immediately sets off a chain of events as both sisters do their best at their jobs to find a solution. Lucky for In Joo, she is labeled the "Outcast of floor 13" and her best friend at work, Jin Hwa Young ( Choo Ja Hyun Green Mother's Club 2022), is labeled the "Outcast of floor 14". They both share a special bond as Hwa Young takes In Joo under her wing as an older sister. Meanwhile, In Kyung works as a determined reporter at a local news station and looks into an old story involving a politician and the deaths of four people. She feels that the story does not add up and decides to look into it further by attending the politician's press conference. There she is caught that she has a drinking problem in front of him as well as in her office where she is sentenced to one-month probation. One day, Hwa Young tells In Joo that she is going on a work trip to Europe and does not arrive back in Korea at the appointed date. The company's lawyer, Choi Do Il ( Wi Ha Joon Squid Game 2021), contacts In Joo and asks if she's heard from Hwa Young. In Joo denies any contact and goes to Hwa Young's house to see if she has returned from her trip. As she looks around Hwa Young's house, In Joo finds Hwa Young hanging inside her closet with a suicide note. Shocked to find out what happened, the whole company is in a panic the next day as police swarmed the crime scene. In Joo is called into her boss's (Director Shin) office and finds out that Hwa Young is responsible for the missing 70 billion Korean won ($53.3 million) from the company's illegal slush fund. Director Shin asks her to find the money but In Joo decides to quit the same day. While walking out of her office, In Joo receives a call from Hwa Young's yoga studio where Hwa Young has transferred her membership to In Joo. In Joo decides to go to the studio and finds Hwa Young's locker full of the 70 billion won. We are left in disbelief as this drama pulled us into its storyline right from the start! The character interaction between the three sisters seems so natural. Make sure to check out our article on why this was! - [K-drama Preview] "Little Women" A Tale About Korea's Modern Consumerism?
#littlewomen #kimgoeun #kdramapreview tvN 's anticipated drama Little Women premieres this Saturday (September 3) and Sunday at 21:10 KST stars Kim Go Eun , Nam Ji Hyun , and Park Ji Hu as three sisters living in poverty who come across 70 billion won ($53.3 million) which alters their lives completely. Director Kim Hee Won explains, during a press conference streamed online, that the drama is a reflection of "modern-day Korea." During an online press conference on August 29, the director of the hit series Vincenzo, Kim Hee Won attended an online press conference along with the cast members of the drama and explained the basis of the new drama. The Vincenzo director claims that the Korean adaptation of the English novel is a retelling of the famous story reflecting the desire for money. "It is writer Jung Seo Kyung 's ( Mother 2018) reinterpretation of the classic 'Little Women.' What if the sisters live in modern-day Korea? It starts with a lifelike story based on our reality but finishes with a tale beyond all imagination." - Kim Hee Won, Director The 12-episode series is one of the most anticipated dramas entering the fall season. The project has recruited well-known writers and production designers including Ryu Seong Hee "Oldboy" (2003), "The Handmaiden", and "Decision to Leave". Kim Hee Won explains, "Jeong's script has some creative concepts that Korean TV series have hardly dealt with so far. I dared to visualize her creativity in 'Little Women.'" Kim Go Eun plays the lead, Oh In Ju, which took her a while to approach her character, but was excited while reading the script. This is what she had to say about her instant chemistry with her two co-stars: “When we all got together for the first time at the script reading, it really felt like we were sisters, so much so that I even wondered, ‘Have we met somewhere else before?’ [Since everyone else was so great,] I thought to myself, ‘The only thing that remains is for me to do a good job.'” - Kim Go Eun Stating the "script leaves a lot of blank space for In Ju's character", Kim Hee Won was given a lot of freedom to create a character on her own terms. She said that this choice bothered her and that it could make a big difference in the end. We're excited about this upcoming drama about modern-Korean women's struggles with finances and their careers! We are in need of entertainment that really describes what life is really like in South Korea! Director Kim Hee Won states that this drama will include "creative concepts Korean TV series hardly deal with" and we're looking forward to seeing what these are! - NewJeans Faces Controversy Over 19+ Lyrics
Idol groups are no strangers to controversy and scandals . If it is played right, the scandal can even lead to even more fame and support. Rookie Idols NewJeans has had a lot of popularity these days which usually means controversy is sure to follow. And at just over a month old, the group faces its first controversy over the lyrics of their chart-dominating song, "Cookie " . Fans have commented and debated on whether the lyrics for "Cookie" are a bit inappropriate for the young group. The lyrics are about the girls singing about a cookie that they made that you cannot get anywhere else and will always want. It's an R&B Pop song with seemingly sexual undertones to anyone who speaks English. In America, the term cookie is a slang term for ladies' lower regions and sex in general. It comes up often in lyrics, like Doja Cat's "Cookie Jar" , as well as in everyday conversations. Therefore the lyrics, " If you want it, you can get it" can seem overtly sexual in English. To Korean speakers, the lyrics could have more of an innocent feel of making love or music that people cannot get enough of. ADOR , the group's label, said "The underlying message of the song is the value of NewJeans’ attempt to make new and original music." They claim that the song is about making music for their fans and has a Korean play on words for burning CDs. The company seems really confused by the controversy altogether. Fans feel bad for the members caught in the middle of this controversy. Though, Korean netizens have also claimed to see the sexual connotations, even saying, "I think there is a bit of sensual underlying vibe but I think they stopped just right." You can listen to the song below and read the lyrics to judge for yourself! While songs with sexual undertones are not new to K-Pop, the problem arises with the ages of the members. The members of NewJeans are all teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 18. As they are mostly minors, singing a song about sexual things, if that was their intention, is inappropriate. The members can have love lives and experiences at their ages, but they're broadcasting their singing to people of all ages across the world. People can sexualize the girls or develop a bad of image of them in Korean's conservative society before they're even adults. What do you think about the lyrics? Do you think they should be free to sing what they want? Or do you think the song is inappropriate?

- Idols Cast On Trendy LGBT Shows? We Show You Who!
South Korea is a rather conservative country when it comes to some social issues . Whether it is mental health, drug use, the impaired, or even the LGBT community, generally these things are not discussed in polite company or ever on TV. This is why it always such a scandal when something about an idol or a celebrity comes out about one of these issues. Idols are supposed to be ideal members of society reflecting of the perfect ideal of what Korea can offer the world. So why are Idols starring in LGBT shows and movies these days? Well, social issues have become more trendy in dramas in the last couple of years. Dramas about mental illness, like It's Okay, That's Love , have been coming out in recent years launching the discussion of these things from the shadows and into the primetime light. This year Extraordinary Attorney Woo is one of the nation's most popular dramas that stars an autistic character and has themes about autism and what that entails for the average Korean. This has no doubt opened doors to be able to tell any story that writers have not dared to tell before. Social issue dramas have become a part of a cultural revolution that when paired with the international rise in popularity of webtoons with these plot lines and the preserving force of LGBT celebrities, such as Hong Seok Cheon , who have come out to fight for acceptance in Korea has created a perfect storm for LGBT stories to come to light in dramas and shows. Hong co-hosts Merry Queer , an up-in-coming reality show where Koreans can come out to the world through the show. It joins other reality shows such as Man's Romance which has gotten more reaction for how handsome the boys are than negativity. Webtoons have always been popular in Korea, but even more so in the times of COVID as everyone suddenly had more time to themselves. And now these stories are being produced into web series, dramas, and movies. While there have been LGBT nuances and side plots without explicitly open relationships in dramas, such as Coffee Prince and The King's Affection . These are usually not the focus outside of a few movies, like Night Flight , that perform well on the festival circuit. Now they are the focus of dramas on TV for the whole family to view. The drama Semantic Error is a prime example. This manhwa-based drama focuses on the relationship of an artist who has to work together for a dreaded group project with an engineer and falls in love. It is a typical frenemies storyline that isn't new to popular romantic dramas, but the LGBT nature is. The drama was ridiculously popular to the point of breaking records and even spawning a movie that's first screenings have already sold out in Korea. The drama stars two idols, Park Seo Ham from KNK and Park Jaechan of DKZ . This isn't the only LGBT-themed drama starring idols coming out these days. Tinted With You was a 2021 drama starring Jun of A.C.E. and Unintentional Love Story is an up-in-coming drama starring Gongchan of B1A4 . Outside of these, there are several LGBT-themed shows coming out in general. Where Your Eyes Linger is another popular drama that stars model actors. Why are idols starring in these dramas? Well, these idols are usually in smaller groups that need more exposure. The fans of these dramas will follow them after to shows leading to a spark in popularity for the group and the idol themselves. Are you watching any of the shows mentioned? What do you think about idols in these dramas? Are they activists for change or just following trends to promote their groups? Let us know what you think below!
